LIFESTYLE LETTER

Home Sweet Home. Oh My! "Home sweet home" takes on a whole new set of meanings in this rich issue! The extra time we have spent at home over the last two years has caused us to pay more attention to aesthetics while simultaneously kept us yearning for a getaway to re-energize our appreciation for it. It is my hope that this issue will engage your artistic eye and inspire creative changes on the home front and also appeal to your desire to escape from it all! Long & Foster realtor Jennifer Chow, has a gift for staging homes to sell and she will be the first to tell sellers that it may not be to their liking. But therein lies her magic! With a deep appreciation for her client’s desires and keen sense of buyer preferences, working with Jennifer is a win-win experience. The full-service, mother-daughter interior design team of Wilson Boland handle all types of projects with rave reviews. However, did you know one of their other signature services is invigorating your space by rearranging your current furniture and items? Hmm... Time to redesign the living room? For those looking to take luxury on the road maybe it’s time to jet off in your luxury automobile instead! Check out Competizione & Sports Cars’ stunning fleet which was recently showcased at the Washington, DC Auto Show. For an escape farther than a drive, head to Ft. Lauderdale for a luxurious and restorative stay. It has my full stamp of approval! Enjoy this festive month as we celebrate Women's History, Mardis Gras, St. Patrick's Day and March Madness. Stay well, Potomac!

“Dan has a wonderful sense of design, he has a great sense of humor but is a serious task master when it comes to working with metal.”

Imagine the pleasure of giving a friend or family member a beautiful, hand-made bracelet, earring, or necklace that you made yourself. Even better, an engagement ring that you designed for the magic moment of a proposal? What could be more thoughtful and fulfilling than that? The aforementioned scenarios are often the experiences of students who have learned the art of jewelry-making and metal design at JewelryClassDC. Owner Daniel Valencia comes from a family of artists. He taught himself the art of working with silver because he wasn’t happy with the manner of instruction in other jewelry schools. He opened his first school in 2011 as a sole proprietor, operating out of his house. From the start he has been passionate about teaching professional practices to students entering the craft at a beginner level. Through the years he has fine-tuned his business, incorporating it in 2014, with a brick and mortar school on Capitol Hill. The jewelry-making classes are structured at different levels with students ranging in age from 14 to 80+. According to the school’s syllabus, Metal I students spend eight weeks making four sterling silver projects while learning the basic techniques of metalsmithing, including hammering, sawing, filing, and bezel setting. Unlike other schools, its students make their own bezels (the enclosures around a stone) from a bar of metal. Metal II students create their own designs while honing their stone setting skills. All tools and

14

H OT SP OT | ARTS + CU LTURE

equipment are provided for studio use and small classes allow for individual instruction and step-bystep demonstration of the fabrication processes. Metal III students learn advanced fabrication and stone setting in process-oriented classes. Metal II and Metal III students are allowed the perks of open studio time as space permits, free of charge. Open studio is each Sunday 9am - 2pm, and Tuesdays 2pm - 6pm, by appointment. Tool lists, supplier recommendations and studio set-up advice are always available. The studio also offers extended study programs, and private instruction is available, ranging from beginner to advanced. Valencia may be a perfectionist, but he wants his students to have fun. They work in an art-deco building filled with art, light, music, and laughter. The studio walls are decorated with antique tools, several dating back to the 18th century. Each student bench is conveniently equipped with a complement of professional metal smithing tools, so that students never spend time looking for a tool when they arrive. Kay, a retired teacher, and city planner started coming to the studio three years ago and has been taking classes ever since. “Dan has a wonderful sense of design, he has a great sense of humor but is a serious task master when it comes to working with the metal,” Kay explains. “He is flexible but expects you to do the work correctly.” For more information visit: JewelryClassDC.com.

COMPETIZIONE & SPORTS CARS CATERS TO THOSE WHO SEEK SOPHISTICATION AND INCREDIBLE SPEEDS ARTICLE BY LAURI GROSS | PHOTOGRAPHY BY MATT RABASSA

When someone enters Richard Capoccia’s shop, they tell him about their dreams. Those fantasies usually involve driving a Ferrari, and lucky for them Richard can make those dreams come true. Richard and his partner Fernando Torres are master technicians and factory-trained to service Ferraris. They’re also co-owners of Competizione & Sports Cars in Gaithersburg. (In Italian “Competizione” translates to “competition.”) “When people come to my shop, usually they have heard of us from word of mouth,” Richard says. “We start talking about what they are looking for and I ask them what they had previously. Most of them say they had a Mercedes, Porsche or BMW but their dream is to have a Ferrari.” Although Richard admits his is a niche business, he says there are a lot of Ferraris in the DMV. “Also,” he adds, “we get cars from all over the country. People ship their cars to us for mechanical work and restoration. We provide the personalized service of a small European shop along with the high-tech tools and equipment of a professional race team.” Richard handles sales for the company while also remaining very hands-on in servicing the cars. In addition, he has four other technicians who are Ferrari-factory trained. CONTINUED >

“All of our Ferraris available for sale are usually locally owned and have been serviced and maintained by us for years,” Richard explains. “That gives the new buyer/owner great peace of mind.” Richard, who has been in the business for more than 30 years, explains that his is not a regular car dealership selling pre-owned vehicles. “We are an old-school shop,” he adds. “A lot of business I do is on a handshake.” Visitors enter the reception area and then go into the workshop. “They see it’s clean and not a regular mechanic shop. They feel very comfortable,” says Richard, adding that his clients are given his cell number and can reach him 24/7. “A lot of my clients have become my friends over the years. They trust me.”

Wilson Boland handles all types of interior design projects, whether for new buildings, renovations, or kitchen and bathroom designs.

“It wasn’t my plan to be an interior designer when I graduated from college and returned home” says Elizabeth Boland, “but I ended up loving it.” Carolyn Wilson, Elizabeth’s mother, is her inspiration. In 1998 Carolyn started her own successful business “Design in a Day,” which began with the concept of helping a client work with what they had to transform their living spaces into new and fresh environments. She would go to a home and with unerring instinct know how to rearrange furniture, often adding elements using the homeowner’s own books, pillows, and other items for a totally new look. Fifteen years ago, Elizabeth joined her mother and the company, now Wilson Boland Design, has evolved and transitioned into a full-service interior design firm. Wilson Boland handles all types of interior design projects, whether for new buildings, renovations, or kitchen and bathroom designs. With Elizabeth now at the helm, furniture, accessories and lighting can be purchased at their studio located in Bethesda. Following her mother’s example, Elizabeth is not afraid to move existing furniture around herself, using furniture sliders for heavy pieces. She is also quick to rely on existing resources in a client’s home, rearranging furniture to different rooms or suggesting upholstering older pieces in alignment with the updated spaces. CONTINUED >

Wilson Boland’s clients live primarily in Montgomery County. They are currently working with two clients in Potomac, one whose house received a much-needed facelift via a new kitchen, bathroom, remodeled family room, mudroom, basement, new window treatments and a new paint job. A second Potomac home needed work done to a master bedroom and several bathrooms due to water damage. The studio space is full of ideas and products to take your home to the next level. I Highly

Welcome Home REALTOR JENNIFER CHOW TREATS ALL CLIENTS LIKE FAMILY, WHETHER BUYING A FIRST HOME OR SELLING A $6.3 MILLION POTOMAC MANSION

ARTICLE BY LAURI GROSS | PHOTOGRAPHY BY BLUE SKYE MEDIA Luxury is tricky to define, but in the real-estate business, it’s a simple numbers game. Long & Foster, for instance, defines a luxury home as one priced at $1 million or above. So, when in mid-January, realtor Jennifer Chow listed a Potomac home for $6.3 million, there was no question about its luxury status. As team leader for the top-producing group at Long & Foster Christie’s Potomac Village Office, Jennifer is an experienced representative of luxury buyers and sellers and, together with her team, she also regularly handles investment property, new construction, rentals, senior living, and townhomes for first-time as well as seasoned buyers and sellers.

26

O PE N H OU SE | R EAL ESTATE

Jennifer treats all clients the same. “If you’re selling a condo for $100,000 or a $6.3 million home, I make the same presentation,” she says. Regardless, she talks to clients about getting their home ready to sell, whether that means painting the interior a neutral color, staging it with items already in the home or bringing in an outside company to get the job done. “I have a licensed interior designer on my team,” Jennifer explains. “She goes in to pick colors and decides the best way to stage.” Initial conversations about staging can be difficult. “Everybody is resistant to change,” Jennifer says, explaining how she coaches clients on the best way to present their home during a sale. “I always say ‘You are not buying the house, so the house is

not going to look like you when I’m done with it.’ You have to trust and believe in the process.” Jennifer is often her client’s second agent. “The first one didn’t have the client stage their home and it didn’t sell,” she says. “Then I come, and it sells.” The $6.3 million home, which sits on Iron Gate Road in Potomac, is 17,000 square feet of perfectly staged grandeur. Featuring seven bedrooms, eight full and two half baths, the space also includes a wine cellar and additional wine room, a spacious gym, a massage room, a main-level entertainment and game room with its own TV and full bar, a 1,300-squarefoot closet/boutique, and a beautifully landscaped two-acre lot anchored by an in-ground pool and hot tub with a pool house and built-in BBQ area.

Built by the acclaimed Bethesda-based Gibson Homes in 2002, this breathtaking property is filled with custom features such as an exposedbeam ceiling in the expansive kitchen, wood coffered ceilings in additional spaces, several balconies, exquisite chandeliers, an elevator, and four-car garage. The entryway evokes Hollywood glamour with its gleaming marble floor and magnificent curved staircase with custom railings fashioned from delicate iron scrollwork. Jennifer says the market remains robust with many homeowners opting to sell for today’s top-dollar even if they haven’t found their next home to purchase. Jennifer tells potential sellers, “You can rent for a time and when the market cools down, we can find you a home to buy.” For help during each phase of these transitions, Jennifer offers what she calls the white glove approach. “We help if they need a painter or a floor guy or to sell furniture. We assist with their move into a rental and with putting items in storage,” she says. Jennifer holds client-appreciation events twice a year and says, “We treat everyone like family. I stay in touch with my clients and become friends with them.” Jennifer specializes in Potomac real estate, but has clients throughout the DMV, where she was born and raised. Jennifer began her career in software sales. “Then I was a stay-at-home mom for 15 years,” she says, referring to raising her three sons who are now aged 14, 18 and 23. “When my youngest son was in first grade, I decided to do real estate.”

That was only eight years ago but, in that short time, Jennifer has earned too many honors to list, including dozens of “top agent” designations. She is also a member of five professional realtor organizations. Jennifer’s team includes Cesar Canedo-Arguelles, Adam Benaim, Angeli Georgallas, Coreta Osborne, Laura Patallo-Sanchez, Madison Savanuck, and Joanne Schoengold. “Mine is very different than a normal team,” Jennifer laughs. “Everyone does their own thing. I want them to learn from the ground up, including how to put a listing in the computer and how to do the paperwork. Most teams don’t work that way, but I feel it makes them better agents. They all do listings, and they all work with buyers.”

Jennifer serves on several boards and committees in professional and volunteer capacities. Her current and former involvement includes the Potomac Elementary PTA Vice President, the Avenel Potomac Swim & Tennis Club President, Winston Churchill Boosters Club board member, and Survivors of Domestic Abuse board member. She asks her team to donate to charities annually and together, they volunteer for various local groups including the Capital Area Food Bank. “Last year,” she says, “We donated our full commissions to help one of our vendors purchase their first home.” And no matter the price, buying your first home is one of life’s best luxuries.

Detox – Retox – Rinse – Repeat The ideal getaway awaits at the W Fort Lauderdale I had an opportunity to slip away, and slip away I did. I found myself off the Caribbean seas of South Florida at the W Fort Lauderdale. The resort captured all of my senses with stunning ocean views and endless creature comforts. My trip kicked off with a healthy balance from “the good for you” cocktails offered in the hotel’s chic living room. On this trip, the goal was simple: Detox the mind, body and soul, Retox with whole foods and beverages, Rinse at the spa, then Repeat! Day 1- I began my day with a healthy, veggie packed meal at SoBe Vegan to fuel me up for a half-day boat charter exploring the iconic intracoastal, also known as the Venice of America. I relaxed to the tune of light music and swam in the ocean canals as dolphins glided by. It made for a truly picture book scene. Back at the property, I glammed up for dinner at Steak 954, the W’s award-winning steakhouse curated by James Beard award winner Stephen Starr. Known for its dry aged meats and fresh seafood, the restaurant brings a unique and modern interpretation to classic steakhouse dining. Their famous hot popovers are enough to keep you coming back.

Day 2- There is nothing better than rise and shine with sunshine. I enjoyed a light breakfast courtesy of prompt room service before heading to my sea cycle class on the living room terrace. There, I sprung into movement with Ride Element as the instructors pumped me up with an exciting workout. Gorgeous ocean views made for an extra special experience. Day 3- All the excitement from the previous two days prepared me for much-anticipated detox time at the awe-inspiring AWAY Spa. The spa’s attentive team ensured my massage treatment involved the highest level of pampering. A hop skip and a jump later and I was at the beach to soak up more sun and scene. Between the W’s comfortable beach chairs, fresh towels and top-notch service, your beach needs are fully covered. Also not to be missed… the W’s guided beach yoga experience followed by an afternoon spent at the pool, Wet. There is no better place to unwind, eat and drink while enjoying the chill atmosphere and panoramic ocean views. Located directly along the sultry shores of Fort Lauderdale Beach, W Fort Lauderdale lived up to its chic and glamorous reputation. All in all, it was an unforgettable reset retreat and just what the doctor ordered. Repeat?…..absolutely!

THE 4 FUNDAMENTALS OF REAL ESTATE SELLING IN POTOMAC ACCESS, EXPOSURE, CONDITION, AND PRICE At Coakley Realty, our expert agents know that selling a property involves much more than planting a “For Sale” sign. When selling, we focus on elements that we can control and four key factors. Keep focus on these 4 fundamental factors and see maximum results with the sale of your property.

Father-son team Rory S. Coakley and Rory P. Coakley

1. Access: Few people buy a property without looking at it. Sellers that understand the importance of access, know that they must be flexible to open their property for buyers to see at any time. When access is made easy, sellers see greater success in a shorter time period. 2. Exposure: Developing a listing with photos is not enough. Understanding how to create a compelling description to drive maximum exposure ensures the greatest visibility and awareness for the property. Take an integrated approach when marketing the property. Use multiple listing sites, social media, direct mail, digital advertising as well as the agent’s network. Understand what channels target and deliver the right qualified buyers. A focused effort will increase the effectiveness of your exposure and return. 3. Condition: Well-maintained properties do not need major upgrades. Sometimes there are small changes that in many cases, will have high impact on returns. These include a fresh neutral painting, cosmetic repairs, staging, and professional cleaning. These small changes can greatly increase the perceived value of your property. 4. Price: Most properties sell if priced correctly. A real estate agent has access to and considers local market data and circumstances. They look at and compare recent closed sale prices, average days on market, current comparable listings, and the condition of your property to determine the listing price. This approach provides insights as to ‘the why’ to price your property a certain way. It removes the emotion, manages your expectations, and helps you get top dollar on your sale.
