The Holiday Giving Project of Montgomery County has helped residents in need celebrate the holidays for more than 30 years. It is a coalition of 20 non-profits, local governments, faith groups, and volunteers who come together to collect and distribute donations of holiday food, gift cards, and toys to Holiday Giving Project recipients by ZIP code. Your Pet’s Happy Place A local pet boutique offering superior products and experiences

Step through the doors of Elysiem on Fairmont Avenue in Bethesda, and you will quickly discover that you are in no ordinary boutique. Your eyes will rapidly devour the trendy and unique styles. You’ll find high-quality items as well as an attentive and knowledgeable staff. Oh, and you’ll find that it’s a boutique devoted to pets. Luxury. That’s what owner John T. McNeal had in mind when he opened Elysiem in the fall of 2017. Having served as an officer in the U.S. Army for 20 years, John is focused and driven. He used those same traits to explore owning his own business. He developed the idea of Elysiem after poring over the business plans for luxury products, contemplating how to create an immersive experience, and extensively researching the pet industry. What do we know about pets? Well, more than 67% of American households own at least one pet. About 12% of adults with kids younger than 18 adopted pets during the COVID-19 pandemic. 40% of dog owners and 25% of cat owners bought clothing for their pet in 2020. And more than 50% of both cat and dog owners give their pet a Christmas gift or treat. So, ultimately, we know that pet parents love their furry friends. The largest expression of that love is maintaining their pet’s health and wellness. One research point that resonated with John is that quality is what matters most to pet parents. As such, the products Elysiem carries are sourced specifically with that in mind. Here you’ll find a specialty pet boutique that offers premium-quality all-natural foods not available in big box retailers. Food lines for dogs include Acana, Annamaet, Fromm, Orijen, Stella & Chewy’s Essentials, Honest Kitchen, Verus and Zignature. John has also determined that wellness goes hand in hand with pet health, and thus has made wellness be the focus of Elysiem’s salon services. The by-appointment-only services include light and full-service grooming. And don’t worry, your precious pets are not caged while they wait for their salon appointment! Adding to the Elysiem experience, John puts on a variety of events and activities: Yappy Hour - John brings Elysiem to you! This pop-up shop version of Elysiem comes complete with treats for pets and pet owners, as well as a little Greek wine for owners. It’s a great opportunity to socialize with your building’s neighbors while shopping a curated selection of John’s favorite items. Paint Your Pooch Face - It’s the perfect opportunity to create a one-of-a-kind piece of art featuring your dog. Check the schedule for monthly classes, which are held in the store after hours. Toys for Fosters - Elysiem has partnered with Lucky Dog Animal Rescue to provide toys and treats for dogs in foster care. In its fifth year, the annual event has been crucial in helping foster homes provide critical support to animals waiting to be adopted. Youth Prodigy Program - Elysiem offers high school students the opportunity to learn about business through this program. In 1972, Interfaith Works (IW) was founded by local faith communities who recognized that collaborative action was the best way to help neighbors in need. Partnerships became the foundation of the organization, and partnerships are what continue to fuel its operations today—50 years later. IW’s Chief Executive Officer, Courtney Hall says, “We remain dedicated to providing vital services and pathways to greater stability. As the needs of our community are evolving, IW and our partners continue to address expanding issues of homelessness, food security, and employment.” Local faith communities, businesses, nonprofits, educational institutions, philanthropic organizations, and individuals who share IW’s mission are encouraged to partner with them. Consider these options and join the efforts today: Vocational Services Program The program placed 101 people in new jobs last fiscal year, resulting in $3 million in annual wages earned. This program depends on business partnerships. Join IW to help provide the skills and trainings needed to increase the employment competitiveness of IW clients. Shelters Over 45,611 nights of shelter and more than 124,000 meals were provided to residents living in Becky’s House, Priscilla’s House, IW Residences, and the Women’s Centers at Taft and Crabbs Branch. It is a tremendous undertaking that rests on the generosity of volunteers who prepare and deliver meals daily.

Essential Needs Center: IW Clothing Center, IW Connections, and IW Food Pantry Many individuals in the community who need essential items come to the IW Clothing Center. Our partners host numerous drives, such as collecting clothing, coats, blankets, toiletries, school supplies, and a variety of home goods. Others volunteer their time to sort and organize donations at the Clothing Center to make it a comfortable and pleasant experience for clients to select items they require for themselves and their families. About 7,582 people received clothing and other household items through the IW Clothing Center, while IW Connections provided 469 households with emergency rental and utility support. Both programs depend on the generous financial support of individuals, companies, and government agencies throughout our area. Your generosity is especially important during the winter months. The IW Food Pantry has distributed over 1.85 million pounds of food since it launched in December 2020. Partners in this endeavor host food drives, as well as sort, organize, and distribute food, and donate financial support. Other partners have been successful in connecting IW with owners of grocery stores and restaurants, as well as food distributors to secure fresh produce. Food insecurity is a growing problem and IW is always on the lookout for new partners.

Monsignor John Enzler, affectionately known as “Father John,” will be stepping down from his role as the President and CEO of Catholic Charities DC after leading the agency since May 2011. This new chapter coincides with the 50th anniversary of his ordination. A native of Bethesda, he served as a parochial vicar at the Church of the Little Flower in Bethesda and later as pastor of Mount Calvary in Forestville, Our Lady of Mercy in Potomac, and the Shrine of the Most Blessed Sacrament in Washington. Catholic Charities DC serves more than 167,000 men, women, and children per year in Washington and suburban Maryland with its 50-plus programs. The organization also operates several of D.C.’s shelters.

FROM THE PANDEMIC TO THE ARRIVAL OF THOUSANDS OF REFUGEES, YOU WERE AT THE HELM OF CATHOLIC CHARITIES DURING A VERY TRYING AND UNUSUAL TIME FOR NOT ONLY OUR NATION, BUT FOR THE D.C. REGION AS WELL. DO YOU FORESEE THE SITUATION CHANGING OR NEEDS EXPANDING EVEN MORE IN THE COMING YEARS? One of Jesus’ more famous quotes was “The poor, you will always have with you.” Our number of people served during the pandemic increased exponentially, both in people served and meals provided. Now, we have migrants coming from the border states by bus who have great needs and are anxious for Catholic Charities to meet them as best we can. I believe that God has positioned us in a place where we can help so many of those who are vulnerable and poor. The mission is the same but the number of people asking for assistance continues to increase. Since inflation has increased the cost of basic needs, we will continue to be stretched in our ability to serve those in need.

DID YOU HAVE ANY SURPRISES AFTER ASSUMING A LEADERSHIP ROLE IN CATHOLIC CHARITIES THAT YOU DIDN’T EXPECT IN YOUR YEARS AS A PARISH PRIEST? he biggest surprise for me was the size of our staff, the T scope of our services, and the number of programs we provide

throughout the year. I don’t think most people understand how much we do and, in that group, are many Catholics and parish priests. I was one of them until 12 years ago.

WHICH NEW CATHOLIC CHARITIES PROGRAMS THAT HAVE STARTED UNDER YOUR LEADERSHIP ARE MOST MEANINGFUL TO YOU? Our Catholic Charities board has continued to remind me that we need to help people move from poverty to sustainability. We serve so many individuals and we should continue to do so but some of these programs will not change the difficult situations people find themselves in. I often times say we need to do more “surgery” and less “band-aids.” I am most proud of our programs that meet that goal, including Compass in Wards 7 and 8, our Newcomer Network, serving Montgomery County, Prince George’s County, and D.C., the Financial Services Network (FSN) which continues to help people work through financial struggles (last year FSN helped over 500 people file tax returns), and the Family Peace Initiative which assists families experiencing domestic violence.

HOW DO YOU ENVISION YOUR NEW SUPPORTING ROLE AT CATHOLIC CHARITIES? While I’m retiring as President and CEO of an agency that I’ve served for 12 years, if and when asked, I will help to enhance the mission and also work with our development office as well. I’m very excited about the future of Catholic Charities and what is on the horizon for me. I’m proud of the fact that we are the most comprehensive social services agency in the area. Our staff lives by the motto “Say yes every time you can and no, only when you have to.” I’m very proud that we are seen as the “charitable arm” of the church here in Washington. There is one thing Kristine Cox, the general manager of Playa Largo Resort and Spa, and her staff consistently offer their guests besides great service and beaming smiles: the positive response of “Yes!” to any of their visitors’ requests. Dinner on the beach tonight? Check! Arrangements to go snorkeling in nearby waters? Check! How about an hour-long massage or facial to relax after a grueling week? Check that off too! For anyone lucky enough to visit Playa Largo, their first impression will last – they are staying at a unique and laid-back resort that offers amenities bound to slow down the often frantic pace of mainland life. Situated on Key Largo, the northernmost island of the Florida Keys and about an hour’s drive from Miami International Airport, Playa Largo resides on a long stretch of Key Largo waterfront. Its property sits on the site of a once-booming pineapple plantation, and specialized cocktails that include pineapple or drinks in hollowed-out pineapple shells are whimsical references to this heritage. The resort offers several choices of accommodations. The main hotel has 177 luxury hotel rooms and suites all housed in Caribbean-inspired buildings, and two-story bungalows and a beach house in an area called “The Hammocks”. The ten bungalows allow for privacy but are an easy stroll to the resort’s pool, fitness center, manmade beach and its four restaurants and bars.

Also included in the Hammock grouping is the Beach House, a three-bedroom and four-bath building with an elevator and a private pool. Other options include an array of new vacation home rentals developed by Playa Largo Resort and Spa on the Atlantic side of the highway. Called Playa Largo Ocean Residences, these oceanfront and oceanview vacation rentals are pet-friendly and set in a private community with a clubhouse, pool and full resort privileges at La Playa. Hungry? No need to venture outside of the resort. It offers diners four restaurants to choose from. Sand Bar is a casual bar with drinks and bites for guests relaxing in the pool or on the beach. Las Olas is the ceviche bar located off the main hotel’s lobby and a popular spot for pre-dinner drinks. La Marea, headed by Chef Karl Stoehr, has a menu that combines local flavors with traditional Mediterranean cuisine, including handmade pizzas, pastas and breads. Lastly, Sol by the Sea offers seafood choices for guests who prefer to enjoy the sunset while they dine outside. Not to be forgotten are two fun touches to book-end your day. The Eventide celebrates the transition from day to night, complete with free music and a pop-up bar, and after-dinner s’mores and wine. For visitors who wish to enjoy a true Florida Keys experience, La Playa teams up with Sundance Watersports, located in nearby Islamorada, Florida. The company’s catamaran, “Blue,” is 26 feet wide complete with a bathroom and two freshwater showers. The boat only travels to shallower reefs, from 7 to 17 feet deep that are perfect for snorkeling. All crewmembers are snorkel instructors and work to make everyone comfortable in the water. Robbie’s, located in the same area, offers delicious chicken Caesar wraps, fries, and bagel breakfast sandwiches. In addition, the venue contains a gift shop where visitors can purchase fresh fish to feed the tarpons swimming along the pier.

(This year, the goal is to double that number with checks ranging in amount up to $3,000 each.) A Dialogue to have with your Parents As your parents age, there are discussions that should be had to ensure that their affairs are in order. INGREDIENTS • 1 package egg noodles • 1/2 cup butter, melted • 8 large eggs • 2 cups sugar • 2 cups sour cream • 2 cups 4% cottage cheese • 3/4 cup cinnamon graham cracker crumbs • 3 tablespoons butter, melted

DIRECTIONS Step 1: Cook the noodles according to package directions and drain. You’ll want to cook them until just al dente to ensure they don’t get too soggy. Toss the noodles with butter and set aside to cool. Step 2: In a large bowl, beat the eggs, sugar, sour cream and cottage cheese until well blended. Stir in the noodles. Make sure the noodles have cooled to prevent them from scrambling the eggs. Step 3: Next, transfer the mixture to a greased 13-in. x 9-in. baking dish. Combine the cracker crumbs and butter, and sprinkle over the top. Step 4: Bake, uncovered, at 350° for 50-55 minutes or until a thermometer reads 160°. Be careful though– any hotter could cause the custard to split. Step 5: Let the kugel stand for 10 minutes before cutting, if you can wait that long! Serve warm or cold. Enjoy!
