CONGRESSMAN DAVID TRONE GIVES BACK AND HOPES TO INSPIRE OTHERS TO DO THE SAME

Philanthropy is a driving force in the world of Congressman David Trone. His desire to promote the welfare of others, expressed especially by the generous donation of monetary funds to meaningful causes is a textbook example of philanthropy. Through his family foundation, his company, and his work in Congress, Trone’s objectives are always the same: mental health, addiction, medical research, and social justice. THE BUSINESS Trone started Total Wine & More with his brother in 1991. Total Wine & More has grown to 246 stores in 27 states, and is the largest privately-owned wine retailer in the country. With more than 12,000 employees and sales of $5.5 billion, the opportunity to encourage philanthropy is tremendous. His stores work with charities in the communities where they operate, having given and raised millions for food banks, women’s shelters, organizations, and other groups that play major roles in people’s lives. Over the past two decades, Total Wine & More’s charitable donations totaled more than $200 million of in-kind and monetary donations. In 2021 alone, Total Wine & More donated more than $9 million in monetary and in-kind donations to 13,000 non-profits in 27 states, helping those charities raise more than $60 million for their organizations’ good works. For this, it was named to the Top 5 Corporate Philanthropists in the DC Metro area by the Washington Business Journal.

Speaker Nancy Pelosi appointed Trone to the National Commission on Combatting Synthetic Opioid Trafficking, committed to studying and addressing the flow of deadly synthetic drugs like fentanyl into our communities.

Trone’s History of Giving 2022 | Furman University | $10 million “As a proud alumnus of Furman University, I am honored by the opportunity to give back in a meaningful way on an issue of great personal importance,” said Trone earlier this year. The donation will impact three areas. First, $1 million will expand and renovate the counseling center to create more group space and areas to practice mindfulness and provide for the expansion of other services and programs. The space will be renamed the Trone Center for Mental Fitness. Second, another $7.5 million will create the Trone Family Fund for Student Mental Health and Well-Being. It will fund positions to ensure a consistent level of professional staffing. It also endows the position that oversees mental health for the campus and ensures the hiring of a diverse staff that reflects the student population. The remaining $1.5 million will create the Hillel Endowment Fund to provide permanent support to expand and enhance the Furman Hillel for a more robust Jewish life for all students and the broader community. THE FAMILY FOUNDATION Trone earned a B.A. from Furman University, graduating summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa in 1977, and an M.B.A. from The Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania. David met June at Wharton, where she also earned an M.B.A. The Trones live in Potomac, Maryland, and are the proud parents of four children – Michelle, Julia, Natalie, and Rob – who are all young adults. The David and June Trone Family Foundation was established in 2011 to make a difference in the lives of others, with particular emphasis on education, health care and social justice.

PUBLIC SERVICE Trone was elected to serve Maryland’s 6th District in Congress in 2018 and took office in January 2019. In 2020, he was re-elected to serve a second term. He serves on the House Appropriations Committee, the Veterans Affairs Committee, and the Joint Economic Committee. He has championed the fight against addiction, forming the Bipartisan Freshman Working Group on Addiction, a group of 60+ freshmen Members of Congress focused on understanding and responding to the opioid crisis. In his second term, the working group became the Bipartisan Addiction and Mental Health Task Force, devoted to addressing the strong ties between addiction and mental health issues in America.

2016 | Wharton School of The University of Pennsylvania | $5 million Trone’s gift was used to establish the Trone Family Public Policy Initiative Fund, providing funding for research and other critical support promoting clear, fact-driven, accessible knowledge to stimulate policies that benefit the American public. The Penn Wharton Public Policy Initiative (Penn Wharton PPI) is a hub for public policy research and education with one overarching goal: to leverage the University’s resources to foster better-informed policymaking on issues related to business and the economy. At the time of the donation, Wharton Dean Geoff Garrett said, “David and June’s generosity adds fantastic momentum to the Penn Wharton PPI. I am sincerely grateful for their philanthropy and for their partnership in this rapidly expanding and exciting initiative. Their support will benefit Wharton, Penn, and the policymaking landscape across the U.S. while growing the community of visionary donors to PPI.” 2021 | American University | $5 million Trone’s donation was to AU’s Center for Neuroscience and Behavior, establishing the school’s first Eminent Scholar faculty position in an effort to support research. At the time, Trone wrote, “The COVID-19 pandemic has accentuated the health threat of cognitive disorders such as addiction and the lack of effective, accessible treatments. June and I believe the research at AU’s Center for Neuroscience and Behavior has the potential to drive transformational change in the way we address issues of addiction and mental health.” 2018 | John Hopkins Medicine | $1.7 Million Trone’s donation helped fund the VLDL (Very Large Database of Lipids) Project, which is an ongoing effort to leverage data from different sources for independent use by academic investigators. This research creates a better understanding of the role of lipids in human disease, helping to improve clinical approaches to the treatment of lipids-related diseases. Trone said, “Advances in basic research are critical to improving health care. At a time when the government is retreating from its support for basic research, we feel a special obligation to accept the responsibility to help in this vital area.” 2017 | Suburban Hospital | $2.5 million Trone’s donation supports mental and behavioral health services, including addiction treatment and renovations to the crisis outpatient and inpatient units, and to help fund the transformation of Suburban Hospital’s campus. There are many examples of businesses engaging in corporate social responsibility, or CSR, including hosting events to help those in need from local communities. The benefits can be mutual: businesses giving back can have a positive impact on the community in which they operate, and a company can experience internal benefits including increasing employee satisfaction and productive team building. Rory S. Coakley, co-founder –with his wife Nancy– of Coakley Realty, discusses his experience giving back to the community:

PL: HOW DO YOU GET YOUR TEAM AND EMPLOYEES TO BUY INTO YOUR BUSINESS SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY CULTURE? RC: I believe that first you should lead by example so your employees can learn what is involved in giving back. Also, it is important to hear directly from your employees regarding organizations they wish to support. In the past we put our employees into teams of twos and had them choose charities to help. That is how we became involved with Stepping Stones, a homeless shelter for families in Rockville.

POTOMAC LIFESTYLE: WHAT IS BUSINESS SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY AND WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO YOU? RORY S. COAKLEY: There are countless ways companies can exercise business social responsibility, including financial giving, offering a company’s resources or expertise, and participating in matching donations. Business social responsibility is important to me based on my upbringing and education. Growing up, I saw first-hand the importance of corporate philanthropy through my parents who were involved in schools, their church, and many charities. They ingrained in me that we are supposed to help others. The motto of my Jesuit-run high school and college is “Men for Others.” This saying sums up the philosophy these schools teach– that it is important to give back to the community because the community gives to us.

PL: WHAT ARE THE WAYS INDIVIDUALS CAN GIVE BACK TO SOCIETY? RC: Individuals should consider how they can best offer help to the less fortunate. For some it is contributing financially, for others it is offering physical man hours such as working to fix up dilapidated buildings or houses needing repairs. Tutoring students appeals to many employees and the option of giving through their company’s matching donations can also be considered.

PL: HOW DO YOU DETERMINE WHAT YOUR BUSINESS SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY INITIATIVES SHOULD INCLUDE? RC: I would encourage business leaders to urge their employees to find something they are passionate about and to support that cause. In high school I became friends with a student whose sister was visually impaired. Through this experience I learned that training and helping people who have lost their sight can lead them to successful lives. While working for my family’s business Coakley & Williams, Inc., we supported Columbia Lighthouse for the Blind and held black-tie dinners and 10K races, raising hundreds of thousands of dollars for this important charity.

PL: CAN YOU GIVE OTHER EXAMPLES OF CHARITIES INDIVIDUALS MIGHT WANT TO HELP? RC: The possibilities are endless. My wife Nancy and I decided to get involved in scholarship programs for five schools that performed a great service to our children. We talked to the development directors of these schools to learn how we could help, and their responses were all different. We have raised money to help food pantries and I have been involved with The Positive Coach Alliance, an organization that helps facilitate training for youth sports. As past Chairman of the Board of Directors of Big Brothers Big Sisters’ of the National Capital Area, I was able to provide my business and fundraising expertise to help support their mission. I have enjoyed spearheading drives to generate donations to numerous youth, high school and college athletic programs and worked with the Positive Coaching Alliance in a similar manner. In summary, the need to help others in our communities is there, and businesses have a responsibility to give back in whatever way suits the company and its employees.

Many a kid growing up in the 60s and 70s will remember a Knights of Columbus – K of C – Fourth of July fireworks event, Christmas parties with Santa, parish pancake breakfasts, summer cookouts and family picnics. However, life got busier for many of us and memories of the Knights of Columbus faded into the background. Plus their historic colorful regalia and imposing leadership titles – Supreme Knight, etc., – seemed like a throwback to a bygone era. But in reality, the Knights haven’t receded – they are still thriving and their numbers are growing worldwide. As of 2020, there were two million knights. Each member belongs to one of more than 16,000 local “councils” around the world. Although most of the councils are associated with an individual parish, the charitable work of the councils extends far beyond their church. Membership is restricted to adult male Catholics, but families are encouraged to become involved in the many activities offered by their council. The Knights still hold their basic principles as guideposts: charity, unity, fraternity, and patriotism. And their good works extend beyond solely Catholic charities to include many worthwhile causes such as Habitat for Humanity and The Special Olympics.

A few active members gave us the full story: The Knights of Columbus was founded in 1882 in New Haven, Connecticut by an American priest, Michael J. McGivney. At the time, he saw the need for a society that could benefit working-class, immigrant Catholics who, facing discrimination, were regularly excluded from labor unions, popular fraternal organizations and other organized groups that provided social services. Father McGivney started a small service organization whose mission was to not only meet the needs of immigrants and refugees but also support families suffering financial hardship from the death of a breadwinner. Word spread of the new source of help and the group quickly gained members, expanding from Connecticut throughout the United States, and ultimately throughout the world. The Knights of Columbus Rock Creek Council encompasses six local parishes. Through the years the council has come up with creative ways to raise money to help others. Last year they held two youth chess tournaments with participants ranging from students in kindergarten to eighth grade. They raised around $1,700 to be donated to the Children’s Inn at NIH.

According to Ivan Galic, the Grand Knight of the Rock Creek Council, “The kids love our chess tournaments and it is yet another way for our council to serve our community.” Matt Hoyle is the Grand Knight of Mater Dei, the Knights’ council based at St. Raphael Parish in Rockville. He remembers that his father was a knight but it wasn’t until later when he met two college members of the Knights that he decided to join. Since then he has become very involved, which now numbers 180 men. This past June St. Raphael’s Garage-to-Attic sale raised more than $13,000 for local charities. The Public Relations Director for the Maryland State Council of the Knights, Vernon Hawkins, Jr., has been actively involved in the Knights for more than 30 years. Vernon reports that the state council recently shipped 40,000 food packages to communities not only within the United States but also throughout the world. He is especially proud of the program called “Box of Joy” that is filled with various gifts for young children and distributed to schools and orphanages internationally. To date more than 7,000 children have been gifted with a “Box of Joy.” From the very beginning, the Knights of Columbus was formed to provide financial aid to members and their families. Today the Knights make available to members the option of buying insurance from its wholly-owned insurance company, one of the largest in the world. The Knights of Columbus Asset Advisers is a money management firm which invests its clients’ money in accordance with Catholic social teachings. The story of the Knights is proof that the need for good organizations that help children and the poor never goes out of style. In today’s turbulent world, their work is needed now more than ever.

With both, the concept of ‘family’ is more important than ever. ‘Family’ is at the heart of Adoptions Together. Janice Goldwater has spent her entire career as a social worker helping create and build families. After identifying gaps in the system and the limited opportunities available for the community, Goldwater founded Adoptions Together in 1990. She notes, “After identifying the need, it was only because the community stepped forward to support this critical mission that the agency has been able to settle thousands of children in families of their own.” With a tagline of ‘Every Child. Every Family. Every Step of the Way.,’ Adoptions Together works to place all children – regardless of age, race, health, or any other variable. No child in need is ever turned away. To do this, the organization welcomes and serves a diverse base of prospective parents including single parents, and same and opposite-gender couples who provide connections built on emotional stability, maturity, and overall security. By encouraging the world of adoption to be more inclusive, Adoptions Together is fostering relationships and connections, leading to the development of more and more families. Since its inception, Adoptions Together has impacted the lives of thousands of children in the Potomac area and beyond. The approach is multifaceted. For families hoping to adopt,

Adoptions Together manage local, national, and international placements for families living in Maryland, Virginia, and DC. With four locations, expectant parents can readily access the resources they need, including food, clothes, transportation to medical appointments, counseling, and assistance navigating services. Adoptive parents find the support they need, from parenting classes to home studies, counseling, support groups, and resource referrals. In an average year, Adoptions Together serves 400 expectant parents, 65 families hoping to adopt infants, and another 30 families seeking to adopt children and teens residing in state foster care. Considering that every night more than 2,000 children in our region go to sleep in state foster care, this work is especially crucial. Additionally, families at all stages of life obtain ongoing support from Adoptions Together through educational programs, support groups, and counseling. Goldwater and her team have developed a range of resources specializing in the complex needs of adoption, attachment, and trauma. During the pandemic, an increase in reported crises among families raising children with histories of trauma has meant wrapping additional levels of support around them. The work for Adoptions Together is accredited and lauded. The US Department of State, through the Intercountry Adoption Accreditation and Maintenance Entity (IAAME), recently renewed the accreditation of Adoptions Together to provide adoption services for intercountry adoptions. The organization has achieved the level of Gold Transparency from GuideStar, the national database of information regarding a nonprofit’s legitimacy, impact, reputation, finances, programs, and governance. This year, Adoptions Together was recognized by the Human Rights Campaign as an “Innovator” in supporting and serving youth and families. For her part, Goldwater received the Congressional Coalition on Adoption “Angel in Adoption” award in 2001. And in 2010, Goldwater was among ten individuals and organizations nationally to receive the “Adoption Excellence Award” from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Most recently in October 2022, Senator Chris Van Hollen nominated Adoptions Together to receive the “Angel in Adoption” award from Congressional Coalition on Adoption Institute.

My wife Debbie and I are blessed to live in the Potomac area. We love the beautiful idyllic environment, our neighbors, and the sense of community it provides for us and the thousands who live here. In this month of Thanksgiving, we recognize that there are some here and many across the country and around the world who do not have the advantages we enjoy. Because of this, we who have more should give back. It is the Potomac way to pay it forward. Paying it forward reminds us of those who supported us along our journey and invites us to do the same for others.

PURPOSE We can achieve meaningful giving by practicing purposeful philanthropy, or making investments directed at making an impact on pivot point areas that matter to the future of society. The returns on those investments are changes to problematic conditions and/or the support of individuals who will become change agents to address these issues.

MEANINGFUL The pivot point areas for purposeful philanthropy are virtually endless. My personal priority areas are education, arts, world peace, and civic engagement, which I have chosen because they are important to me and because I know that improvement in them can make a meaningful and substantial difference.

SUPPORT I have made substantial investments in all of the listed areas below. As one example, I served on the board of the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and supported programs to expose youth to the arts. • Education is a bridge and opportunity creator. It helps move people up the ladder and others to climb the ladder with them. • Art connects and inspires citizens and communities. It has a unifying and healing power. • World peace is more important than ever in these increasingly turbulent times. It is essential for the future of this planet. • Civic engagement is at the heart of a healthy democracy. Today, democracy is descending and autocracy is ascending around the world.

I cite my investments for illustrative purposes only. Each of us must choose the areas that resonate with us most deeply. The essential part is that you make the choice and invest. The size of that investment isn’t what counts and it need not be just financial. It can also include giving time, talent, and ideas or volunteering. In his inaugural address, President John F. Kennedy famously said, “Ask not what your country can do for you. Ask what you can do for your country.” In this month of Thanksgiving, we in Potomac – which is one of the wealthiest areas in America – should ask ourselves that question. Based on our answer, we should get involved so that we can make a difference now and in the future.”

From Georgetown Prep to Team China, brothers Damon and Dylan Hsu bring their lacrosse talents to the world stage.

Potomac residents and brothers, Damon and Dylan Hsu, have returned from Limerick, Ireland, where they competed in the U21 World Lacrosse Championship last month for Team China. While lacrosse is in the developmental stage in China, according to the NCAA, it has been one of the fastest growing sports in the U.S. for the past 15 years. It is also a mainstay of Maryland youth and college sports. The Hsu brothers began playing at local recreational clubs around the age of 8. They were soon playing on school and travel teams, and each played four years of lacrosse at Georgetown Prep. Scott Urick, Prep’s varsity head coach, says “Damon and Dylan were integral parts of their respective teams at Prep. Damon was a Senior Captain, and Dylan played a vital role in our IAC Title run in 2021! I’m proud to have coached Damon and Dylan.” The boys secured two of the highly coveted roster spots for China after participating in the North American tryouts. They then trained with teammates in Towson, Md. in July before heading to Dublin for another week of training before the tournament. The brothers’ participation on the team proved invaluable. Brendan Mullin, Team China’s Head Coach, said, “We’re super excited to have Damon and Dylan with Team China for the Men’s U21 Lacrosse World Championship. Both players are dynamic offensive threats who bring a wealth of experience and lacrosse knowledge to the team. We are proud of the way they

According to China Lacrosse, “he was an absolute force on the midfield for Team China all tournament long, racking up 18 goals and 7 assists over the course of the tournament.” Dylan, an attackman wearing #1, placed second on the leaderboard with 20 goals/16 assists, the highest number of assists out of the entire tournament. China finished the tournament with an overall record of 6-2. In addition to playing the sport they love and traveling for international competition, Dylan and Damon have higher aspirations for China Lacrosse. Ultimately, they hope to bring greater exposure to the Chinese people and demonstrate that lacrosse is not limited to certain communities or stereotypes. Truly, they want to show that there are people all around the world who can enjoy and appreciate the sport. These days you’ll find Damon playing as a junior for Lehigh University and Dylan, a sophomore, playing for Amherst. Next steps for the brothers and Team China include a qualifier round in Korea this fall, and hopefully the men’s world championship next summer in San Diego. Keep a lookout for these two as they acomplish great things!

HERB GARDEN MATZO BALL SOUP: Recipe By: Leah Koenig

ingredients: • • • • •

4 large eggs, lightly beaten 1 cup matzo meal ¼ cup seltzer ¼ cup neutral vegetable oil 2 tablespoons finely chopped mixed fresh herbs (such as parsley, dill, chives, and fennel fronds) • 1 teaspoon kosher salt SOUP • 12 ounces medium carrots, peeled, divided • 1 (3 1/2-pound) whole chicken, cut into 8 pieces • 1 pound medium-size yellow onions, halved lengthwise • 1 medium (about 13-ounce) fennel bulb, quartered, 1/4 cup packed fennel fronds reserved • 2 large celery stalks, trimmed and halved crosswise • ¼ cup loosely packed fresh flat-leaf parsley sprigs • 6 medium garlic cloves, smashed • 2 fresh or dried bay leaves • 10 cups cold water • 1 tablespoon plus 1 teaspoon kosher salt, plus more to taste • 1 teaspoon black pepper, plus more to taste ADDITIONAL INGREDIENTS • ½ cup packed fresh flat-leaf parsley leaves • ½ cup packed fresh dill fronds • ¼ cup sliced fresh chives • 1 tablespoon grated lemon zest (from 1 large lemon) • Edible flowers (optional) xx minutes C ULIN A RY C R E AT ION S 50

preparation: MAKE THE MATZO BALLS: 1. Stir together eggs, matzo meal, seltzer, oil, chopped mixed herbs, and salt in a large bowl. Cover and refrigerate for 30 minutes. 2. Meanwhile, bring a Dutch oven filled with generously salted water to a boil over medium-high. Reduce heat to medium low to maintain a simmer while you shape the matzo balls. 3. Using lightly moistened hands, scoop out chilled matzo mixture by heaping tablespoonfuls, and roll into balls, carefully adding each ball to simmering water after you shape it. (You will have 18 to 20 balls total.) 4. Cover Dutch oven; simmer matzo balls until tender and puffed, 45 to 55 minutes. (For denser, less fluffy matzo balls, cook for slightly less time.) To test for doneness, remove 1 matzo ball from water, and cut in half. It should be uniformly pale in color throughout. Remove from heat. Remove matzo balls from water, and transfer to a plate. Let cool 30 minutes. Proceed with making soup, or refrigerate matzo balls in an airtight container for up to 1 day. WHILE MATZO BALLS COOK, MAKE THE SOUP: 1. Cut 2 carrots in half crosswise, and place in a large stockpot. Add chicken, onions, fennel bulb, celery, parsley sprigs, garlic, and bay leaves to stockpot. Cover with 10 cups cold water. Bring to a boil over high. Reduce heat to medium-low, and gently simmer, partially covered, until chicken is very tender and falling off the bone, about 1 hour and 30 minutes, occasionally skimming any foam that accumulates. Soup should maintain a very gentle simmer; if it starts to bubble too vigorously, nudge the heat down a little. 2. While the soup cooks, cut remaining carrots into thin (11/2- x 1/16- x 1/16-inch) julienned strips. Set aside. 3. Remove chicken from stock mixture; transfer to a cutting board, and let stand until cool to the touch, about 10 minutes. Meanwhile, place a fine wire-mesh strainer over a large heatproof bowl; pour stock mixture through strainer. Discard solids. Return strained stock to stockpot; stir in salt and pepper. Add julienned carrot strips. Bring mixture to a simmer over medium-low. Simmer, covered, until carrots are tender, about 10 minutes. 4. Remove and discard chicken skin and bones from meat. Shred meat into bite size pieces. Return shredded chicken to stockpot, and return to a simmer over medium-low. Simmer until warmed through, about 2 minutes. Season with additional salt and pepper to taste. 5. Place parsley leaves, dill fronds, chives, lemon zest, and reserved fennel fronds on a cutting board; roughly chop mixture, leaving some larger pieces intact. 6. Place 3 or 4 matzo balls in each of 6 bowls; top evenly with soup. Generously scatter bowls with herb mixture. If desired, decorate with a few edible flowers. Serve immediately.
