Sweet Summer's End HELLO SUMMER LOVERS, What a glorious season it has been – full of sun, pooltime and so many beautiful reunions with family and friends we have been missing over the last year. August is a bittersweet month as our families try to hang on to the freedom that comes with school being out. Nothing says summer quite like the Olympics, which will wrap early this month. Though they will look a but different this year, our enthusiasm for the exciting events remain the same. Sports are an incredible portal to a fulfilling life and no one can attest to that more than famous Montgomery County resident and gymnast Dominique Dawes, who we had the pleasure of sitting down with for a one-on-one chat this month. She is equal parts talented, graceful and gracious. A fierce combination! But most importantly, she is com-

mitted to providing a healthy, safe space for children to build skills and confidence at her eponymous gymnastics and ninja academy in Clarksburg, Md. which opened last July. Speaking of being active, we have had a wonderful time expending our energy on the tennis courts this summer. Manor Country Club tennis director, Hyon Yoo, reminds us that the sport is not only amazing for our health, but wonderful for your social life as well. What could be better than mingling with fellow members and dusting off the old social skills while getting in shape? After a good sweat with all our sports-related content, how does a massive scoop of chocolate ice cream sound? You deserve it, Potomac! Park Potomac's Ice Cream Social at the end of the month will not only satisfy your sugar cravings, but support a good cause. The annual event donates funds to the Interfaith Network in Montgomery County.

THE INTERNET CAN BE A WEIRD PLACE. Just ask Tandis Esfandiari. “I tell the internet everything,” she said, referring to her lifestyle and cooking posts on TikTok and Instagram. “People are interested in the nooks and crannies of my day,” she continues. “It’s weird but I love it.” A graduate of Walt Whitman High School and currently studying marketing at Southern Methodist University, Tandis has been marketing herself online since 2015. Her 106,000 Instagram followers and a quarter million on TikTok all know and love her tagline: “Mix it up, baby!” At MixItUpBaby.com. she shares recipes and restaurant reviews. “I want to be an entity, like Paris Hilton,” she says.
ARTICLE LAURI GROSS | PHOTOGRAPHY TONY POWELL
And then there’s Andy Jiang. Last spring Andy graduated from Winston Churchill High School and he’ll attend the University of Pennsylvania this fall. When a friend bet him that he couldn’t reach 1,000 followers on TikTok within one week, Andy accepted and quickly reached 1,200 followers. Just over a year later, his followers now number three million and some posts receive 120 million likes. But still, he considers basketball and alto sax his main extracurriculars. From online news sources, Andy finds topics for his videos which he describes as “mainly for entertainment. But I also like to create lots of uplifting and inspiring stories,” he says. His varied topics also include current events and what he calls “tricks that give you power over your body, and cool stories from history.” Tandis and Andy do their own photography, editing and production. Tandis, who makes jewelry that she calls “everyday pieces for elegant people” (available at TTEJewelry. com), uses a digital SLR camera for her videos. Andy, who spends an hour or two researching topics, and another one or two hours making each video, uses his phone. Social media is a money maker for Tandis and Andy, and, understandably, they rarely take a day off. FOLLOW ALONG ON TIKTOK: @TANDISSS // @ANDYYJIANG CityLifestyle.com/Potomac

Park Potomac Ice Cream Social

A SWEET WAY TO HELP LOCAL SCHOOLCHILDREN HOLDING A COMMUNITY ICE CREAM SOCIAL FOR A GOOD CAUSE SOUNDS LIKE A GREAT TIME, BUT IN THE CASE OF THE ANNUAL PARK POTOMAC ICE CREAM SOCIAL FOR CHARITY, OR ICSC, THE MONEY RAISED MAKES A

REAL DIFFERENCE IN THE LIVES OF CHILDREN IN NEED. According to Bruce Fonoroff, Chair of the ICSC, in 2008 he and his wife Margo were chatting with other new residents of the Brownstones and condos at Park Potomac about how blessed they felt and how they wanted to help other less fortunate residents living in the community. One member in the group suggested working with an organization called Interfaith Works (IW) of Montgomery County (www.iworksmc.org). Together they agreed on a plan to help children who sometimes would carry their books and supplies to school in plastic grocery bags because their parents couldn’t afford backpacks. The group formed a committee to raise money by holding an ice cream social on the plaza at Park Potomac, an event Fonoroff calls “part block party, part fundraiser, and part community volunteerism.” The first social was wildly successful and devel-

oped into a great annual community event. To date, more than 12,000 new backpacks and tens of thousands of school supplies have been donated to children eager to start a new school year with the tools they need to succeed. In 2019 the group established three tiers of sponsorships, including five “Benefactors” who donate at the $1,500 level, (Foulger-Pratt, Shulman Rogers, FirstService Residential, Barkan Management and Town & Country Movers); “Patrons” (limited to ten at $1,000), and “Sponsors” (at $500). A number of organizations have recognized the Park Potomac Community and Bruce and Margo’s contribution. In 2017 the Fonoroffs were recognized as the Interfaith Works “Humanitarians of the Year.” This year Fonoroff is looking forward to the “best event ever,” complete with face painters, a parade, Carmen’s ice cream, an enhanced photobooth, VIP guests and thousands of dollars in door prizes from local merchants. It is scheduled for Saturday, August 21st, from noon to 3:00 pm.

THE DECISION TO HELP ANOTHER PERSON CAN BE COMPLICATED. But for some people, it’s simple. Some people believe everyone deserves kindness and dignity and they live their lives accordingly, even if things get complicated. Melina Oseguera, a recent graduate of Paint Branch High School, is one of them. As the Founder and Director of a community organization called Bundled Smiles, she leads high-school and college students

KindWorks also refurbishes computers for students, families or groups in need, through their Digital Empowerment Initiative. “All those laptops you don’t know what to do with? We wipe them clean and give them another five to seven years by upgrading and cleaning them,” Debra says. Like KindWorks, Bundled Smiles fills specific needs. Last summer, as Melina’s group handed food and water to homeless people, they asked about their needs. From those conversations, the Bundled Smiles team created a list of toiletry and hygiene items that they now try to include in each delivery. it’s more than just serving food; I’ve talked to so many different women and heard great stories that I wouldn’t hear anywhere else. It’s amazing how much of an impact KindWorks continues to make on the community!” Jessica plans to study corporate responsibility in college. “I want to tie my love for volunteering and making positive change with business in order to leave my mark on society,” she says. Walt Whitman High School student Chloe Maciejewski also volunteers with KindWorks. “I used to play the violin, so I thought it would be nice to help out,” she said, referring to a KindWorks program that gives donated instruments to music students in need. Later, Chloe helped with the KindWorks Digital Empowerment Initiative by delivering donated computers and equipment to volunteers who did the refurbishing. Brothers Sulayman, 11, and Yousuf Ahmad, 9 attend Norwood School and are among the youngest volunteers at KindWorks. The brothers help cook and prepare food at homeless shelters. Sulayman says, “When I made the bag for each person it made me feel like I was actually helping. It was really good that I knew I was doing that work myself and especially in Ramadan when we are fasting, it helped to think of other people.” Yousuf adds, “I started the soup making because I love to cook and it’s good to not just cook for yourself but for others like people in need.” When Melina heads off to Stanford University in the fall, she plans to have someone manage Bundled Smiles in Maryland while she sets up a branch to work with the homeless in California. When Yousuf and Sulayman delivered their sandwiches, they wrote uplifting messages on each bag, “So that the person who eats it can also maybe feel a little better,” says Yousuf who adds, “Everyone is special too, and even homeless or people in a shelter, because they are people.” And that should be simple enough for us all. However, years after the notorious national abuse scandal broke, she has vowed to do what’s in her power to change the sport. Dawes is committed to creating a healthier culture in the world of gymnastics for her kids and yours! Dawes, nicknamed “Awesome Dawesome,” was a gymnast for 18 years and a member of the U.S. national gymnastics team for 10 years. She was born in Silver Spring, graduated from Gaithersburg High School and the University of Maryland, College Park. She started taking gymnastic classes at age 6 and won her first competition at 9. Throughout her storied career she became the first African American woman to win an individual Olympic medal in women’s gymnastics. After taking home one Olympic gold medal and three bronze medals, she retired in 2000. Never one to rest on her laurels, Dawes has used her platform to influence young people to lead healthy and productive lives. She served as co-chair of the President’s Council on Fitness Sports under President Obama. She is also a popular motivational speaker, urging young listeners to focus on achieving their highest potential not only through athleticism but by leading a well-rounded life. Since retiring from gymnastics she has enjoyed such varied activities as appearing in music videos, playing the role of Patty Simcox in Grease on Broadway, and supported such worthy causes as Ronald McDonald House Charities and autism awareness campaigns.

DOMINIQUE DAWES (CONTINUED)
The gymnastics legend is a super-busy powerhouse on the home front as well. In 2013 she married a local teacher who understands the importance of developing a healthy environment for kids to thrive. They now have four children, including 3 year-old twins. Her goal to give children a safe space to practice the sport led to the opening of The Dominique Dawes Gymnastics Academy in Clarksburg, Maryland last July. Dawes’ objective is not to necessarily build Olympians – they don’t have a competitive team yet – but to help develop successful individuals with compassion and confidence. The fully-equipped gym offers classes for kids nine months old to 18 years old in gymnastics and, she jokes, “4 to 94 years old in ninja — ninja is for adults as well.” Ninja warrior training is inspired by the popular television shows “American Ninja Warrior” and “American Ninja Warrior Junior.” Exercises consist of martial arts, challenging obstacle courses and gymnastic techniques. According to the gym’s website, “In Ninja classes an athlete can choose to train ‘just for fun and fitness’ or ‘to improve their fundamentals’ to help them excel on the lacrosse and soccer field, basketball court or any other sport that they are pursuing.” Parents can schedule birthday parties at the gym, and summer camp is also offered. Dawes’ daughters (age 7 and 5) are committed to gymnastics while her twin toddlers enjoy jumping on the trampoline. Today the Dominique Dawes Gymnastics Academy is thriving, with almost 1,000 students currently enrolled. The team is now in the process of hiring more – “building the right team of people is a priority of mine,” Dawes says, adding that she wants to find coaches who love working with kids and who know how much words matter. To date she has hired multi-dimensional people including artists, musicians, and aspiring teachers. “In the end,” Dawes says, “I want our kids to be happy and healthy people, not just outstanding gymnasts.” For more information visit: www.dominiquedawesgymnasticsacademy.com or call 240-690-4138.

Scientists on her team worked with us to come up with a hemp oil product for pets called The Pleasant Pet. It makes me so proud and happy. It’s a true mother-daughter success story.”
Tiffany Lewis and her Shih Tzu, Millie, show off The Pleasant Pet hemp oil that Tiffany's company offers.
The Pleasant Pet, available at PetAndHomeCare.com/shop, uses a broad-spectrum hemp oil that Tiffany says provides relief for many common pet ailments including pain, anxiety, arthritis, seizures, allergies, skin conditions, digestive issues, and sundowner syndrome; a cognitive degeneration disorder in senior dogs. The product is made from just four ingredients: organic cold-pressed hemp seed oil, organic broad-spectrum hemp oil, sunflower lecithin, and a blend of terpenes. It does not contain THC. The Pleasant Pet is packaged with a dropper and the label recommends dosage according to the size of the dog. “They can mix it on the dog’s food or put it on a treat,” Tiffany says. “It’s so safe, you don’t have to worry about an overdose and you can adjust the dosage when you see how it works for your dog,” she adds. It helps Millie handle the stress of fireworks, airplane rides and more.
