LIFESTYLE LETTER

OCTOBER 2021 PUBLISHER

KC Cole | KC.Cole@LifestylePubs.com COPY EDITOR

Falling in Love with the Community AS HARD AS IT IS TO BELIEVE, FALL IS IN FULL SWING. With summer in the rearview, we wanted to take this month to reflect on how lucky we are to live in such an incredible area and surrounding community. We are celebrating the symbiosis with our inaugural "Best of" issue to call out the small businesses that keep our region thriving. From entertaining our beloved animals (Pet Home & Care) to nourishing our families with fresh meals (Gregorio's Trattoria), we are indebted to these establishments that make up the fabric of Potomac and beyond. A big thank you to all our readers who participated to vote for our winners. Within these pages, you will not only find a directory of the neighborhood favorites, but several stories that shine a spotlight on what they do and why they do it. Take Ben's Chili Bowl for example, the Ali family has been operating the famous eatery for more than 40 years in the northwest corridor of Washington, DC. Whether you are a dignitary, celebrity

or regular customer on lunch break, the popular establishment treats all of its visitors with the same level of respect. Can you think of a more beautiful symbol for life? After you pay a visit to the food mecca on U Street, reserve a table (and some room in your stomach) for brunch at the Pembroke at the Dupont Circle Hotel. The French-inspired restaurant is open exclusively for brunch on Saturdays and Sunday. The food tastes as good as the elegantly-designed interiors look. You won’t want to miss their stunning menu offerings. Our food coverage in this issue runs the gamut. We caught up with Tracye McQuirter

BRUNCH NEVER LOOKED SO GOOD PICTURE YOURSELF ON A CRISP FALL SATURDAY MORNING IN THE HEART OF WASHINGTON’S DUPONT CIRCLE NEIGHBORHOOD. Between errands, you naturally gravitate to the uber chic Dupont Circle Hotel, where elegant French fare beckons at the hotel’s premier eatery, Pembroke. Mid-morning sunlight gushes through floor to ceiling windows into the airy dining room as you settle into a cushy booth. You are pleased to have a front row seat as the streetscape outside bursts with activity. A friendly server delivers a chilled flute of Taittinger La Francaise Brut Champagne topped off with a splash of mango juice and you playfully debate the menu items in your head. ‘Should I go classic breakfast a la eggs benedict or lean into lunch with a fresh seafood salad, punctuated with quinoa, edamame and beetroot?’ The restaurant’s young executive chef Taylor Burlingame sources the freshest ingredients from local family-owned sustainable farms, so you can’t go wrong. The picture-perfect scene awaits you at the Pembroke, open exclusively for Saturday and Sunday brunch. Visit thepembrokedc.com to reserve your table 9am - 2:30pm. Brunch entrees range from $10 to $32.

FILICORI ZECCHINI CAFÉ IN PARK POTOMAC CREATES COFFEE AND ESPRESSO WITH BEANS FROM ONE OF THE WORLD’S MOST CELEBRATED ROASTERS PLENTY HAS BEEN SAID ABOUT WHAT MAKES THE PERFECT COFFEE OR ESPRESSO. Is it the water? The beans? The coffee machine? Those elements are important, but when Aldo Filicori and Luigi Zecchini set out to establish their version of perfection, they focused on the roasting. That was 1919. Today, the company remains one of only six in the world that roasts beans the way Aldo and Luigi did.

Zecchini i r o Ca c i l l i i i c F o f ri F Ze é cc hini Café The trick, says Elhussien Ahmed, owner of the Filicori Zecchini café in Park Potomac, is to “roast each type of bean separately and then blend after roasting. Others blend and then roast together so it is burned and the acidity comes out. Beans from each origin need a different type of heat and roasting.” He adds that doing it this way, “takes a lot of work and experience.” The process protects each bean’s unique flavor and aroma. The result has been described as sweet velvet on the palate. The beans come from Brazil, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Columbia and India. They travel to Italy for the crucial step of roasting. Next, the roasted beans are vacuum-sealed and preserved in air-tight bags or containers en route to

Their careful attention to the technical specifications of the Italian Espresso Institute has earned Filicori Zecchini’s espresso the prestigious title of Certified Italian Espresso. The Filicori Zecchini café in Park Potomac is open for breakfast and lunch with a menu featuring salads, sandwiches, muffins, pastries, smoothies, and desserts including tiramisu. Visitors can purchase whole or ground beans, pods and capsules for Nespresso and other machines, cold brew and of course a tantalizing selection of espresso and coffee drinks. Choose from classic or specialty coffee drinks. Elhussien mentions the customer favorite affogato, which is a scoop of gelato with a shot of espresso. Others incorporate cocoa powder, frothed milk, whipped cream, and thick Italian hot chocolate cream. Everyone can raise a mug to that.

Greg and Donald are often pleasantly surprised when old friends they haven’t seen in years stop by. So what keeps customers coming time and time again. As mentioned above, the delicious Italian fare is made to order from fresh ingredients. According to Greg, the most popular items are the classic Italian dishes such as pizza, spaghetti with meatballs, lasagna, chicken and eggplant parmesan. However, a glance at the menu lists countless more mouth-watering meals along with notto-be-missed “Daily Specials.” They include tantalizing choices such as shrimp fra diavalo (sauteed shrimp in a spicy marinara sauce), arugula pear salad, quattro forma-

Gregorio’s is available to help celebrate special occasions with their family-style meals, home and office catering, or (even) a personal chef service. Those who work in the restaurant business know it is demanding under the best of circumstances, and Covid19 threw a wrench into all of their businesses. For a while Gregorio’s offered only delivery or curbside pick-up. Greg found jobs for all his employees during this challenging time; however they often changed roles as needed with servers, hosts, and bussers finding themselves temporarily working as cashiers or delivery drivers. Donald is forthright about the challenges the pandemic presented: “All the time the government is coming up with new rules, new twists, and with virtually no notice. Although it took a while, things are gradually getting back to a new/somewhat normal.” Donald notes that “When the Potomac restaurant opened we only serviced inside diners, then we added a few tables outside,
