THE GLENSTONE MUSEUM FEATURES BREATHTAKING ART EXHIBITED AMIDST A CAMPUS OF NATURAL WONDERS 12

I N G VISITORS TO THE GLENSTONE MUSEUM DON’T SEE VERY MUCH IN THE WAY OF WRITTEN TEXT EXPLAINING THE ART. Instead, visitors need to just speak their questions aloud and a voice will respond with all the history, context and backstory they seek. The Glenstone, however, is not a place where digital devices robotically intrude on the museum experience. In fact, it is a serene place, and those voices visitors hear answering questions belong to actual humans simply known as guides. The visitor experience, says Emily Grebenstein, Glenstone’s manager of communications, “is not just about art but understanding architecture and the landscape behind it. It’s a holistic approach to the visitor experience.” “We really do have guides everywhere,” she adds, referring to the many elements of the museum’s campus where guides are stationed, including paths, trails, streams, meadows, forests and outdoor sculptures throughout the grounds. The museum follows an organic approach to landscaping and maintains a composting station where they produce compost tea to use as fertilizer and soil amendment. There are three underground cisterns to manage rainfall flow and recycle the water for landscaping needs. It’s all part of the balanced ecosystem at Glenstone where even the on-site dining venues (the Café and the Patio) are part of their commitment to natural harmony as they feature organic local ingredients in their menu of soups, sandwiches, salads and snacks, all of which Glenstone’s guides are happy to explain. Founded in 2006, the Glenstone began with 9,000 square feet of exhibition space filled with modern and contemporary art. After a recently completed fiveyear expansion, the museum now includes the original gallery plus the Pavilions for a total of nearly 60,000 square feet of exhibition space, plus 130 acres appended to the property that now spans nearly 300 acres. The 11 rooms of the Pavilions host varied exhibitions and are illuminated almost entirely by natural light. The rooms are connected by a glass-enclosed passage that looks out onto an 18,000-square-foot water court that is home to seasonally changing plant life. Everything about Glenstone is carefully designed to create this type of peaceful, contemplative experience. Achieving and maintaining that laid-back vibe, however, takes some serious effort, starting with the guides. Most of the museum’s 40-plus guides are part of Glenstone’s Emerging Professionals Program, for which the museum recruits university students pursuing art-related but also other degrees, into their two-year system. During the two years, guides learn everything about Glenstone and every aspect of operating an art museum, including administrative functions. They can answer nearly every question about the artwork exhibitions but also about Glenstone’s trees, plants, ponds, forests, etc.

The guides in the Emerging Professionals Program work fulltime. On the days the museum is open to the public (Thursday through Sunday), the guides answer questions and facilitate discussions with visitors. Other times, they visit schools as part of Glenstone’s community outreach, they visit art studios and other museums, they welcome guest lecturers and more. “It’s hard to break into the arts field,” says Emily, who adds that the guides leave the Emerging Professionals Program very wellrounded and with unique experience under their belt. Later in 2019, Glenstone will open its Environmental Center, a multi-use maintenance and education facility that will offer experiential learning in areas such as composting, organic landscape management, waste reduction, materials recycling and water conservation. As part of Glenstone’s connection to the community, Environmental Center visitors will learn how they can incorporate these methods at home. In addition, the museum brings in middle school and high school students for educational programs. And it’s not always art classes. Recently, students came from a Baltimore trade/vocational school. “They spent time with our engineering and maintenance team,” Emily says. “You can be an engineer at a museum. The needs for those skills are big here,” she explains. She also describes Glenstone’s commitment to connecting student’s experiences at the museum to other aspects of their life. Visitors to Glenstone are drawn into the seamless integration of art, architecture and landscape. They will leave knowing that they themselves are part of Glenstone’s great collaborative experience.
The “Visit” tab at Glenstone.org includes an invitation for schools to request a visit. Under the “About” tab, there is a “Careers” section where university students can learn about becoming part of Glenstone’s Emerging Professionals Program and other career opportunities at Glenstone. Admission to the museum is always free but does require tickets, which are available through the website by clicking “Schedule a Visit” in the upper right corner. (Visitors must be at least 12 years old.) On the first of each month, tickets become available for visits two months ahead. For instance, on May 1, tickets will be available for visits in July.

POTOMAC CONSERVANCY IS THE REGION’S LEADING CLEAN-WATER ADVOCATE, FIGHTING TO ENSURE THE POTOMAC RIVER BOASTS CLEAN DRINKING WATER, HEALTHY LANDS AND VIBRANT COMMUNITIES. Donations to the group support three main areas: land conservation, clean water advocacy and community volunteer programs. Specifically, that means donated funds support a staff that researches relevant river issues, forms policy positions, coordinates with partners and coalitions, involves key stakeholders in the community, mobilizes grassroots support, and directly advocates with elected officials on behalf of the movement and the organization. Money is also needed for the group’s software platform to track advocacy actions and assist with email engagement, and for the Potomac River Report Card, a research-based assessment of the river’s health. While the Conservancy enjoys robust support from volunteers, funds help support paid staff who lead volunteer efforts, and money also goes toward buying what the volunteers need to do their cleanups and other activities. FOOD BRINGS PEOPLE TOGETHER. From pizza parties as children to lunch meetings as adults, food is not just a necessity but part of a lifestyle. Greg Kahn grew up around restaurants while his father owned Kahn Paper company, a distributor of food service disposables (pizza boxes, napkins, straws, etc.). After a few years as a sales representative at Kahn Paper calling on local restaurants, Greg knew he wanted to open a restaurant. His vision was to create a neighborhood family restaurant that serves traditional Italian food made the way it should be, fresh ingredients and prepared to order. In 2008, Greg and his father purchased an existing restaurant in Reston, Va. After five years of developing the concept, Greg rebranded as Gregorio’s Trattoria in 2013. Shortly before the reopening, they opened a Gregorio’s in Potomac’s Cabin John Village. The Potomac location gave Greg an opportunity to come back to his roots and give back to the community that helped raise him. A graduate of Churchill High School, he and his wife, Kate, are now raising their family in Potomac. Almost six years since opening, Gregorio’s is a local Potomac favorite. The goal was to create the type of neighborhood Italian restaurant you remember from childhood. “So many Italian restaurants are trying to put a new twist on these dishes, but we just want to serve delicious, traditional ItalianAmerican food,” Greg says. Gregorio’s extensive menu options aim to please. From traditional Italian favorites and extensive gluten-free choices to a children’s menu, there’s sure to be something for everyone. Just as they hoped, it’s the classic offerings that continue to be best-sellers. You can never go wrong with the Spaghetti con Polpette featuring homemade meatballs and sauce or the Eggplant Parmigiana that is so good that “it doesn’t even taste like a vegetable!” Greg has created “Greg’s Food 4 Cause,” where he invites schools, local nonprofit organizations, teams and clubs to hold fundraisers and receive a percentage of sales generated. Geneva Day School, offering traditional early childhood education since 1965 and certified as a Maryland Green School as of 2010, proves itself irresistible to generations through uniquely green foundations. “Our students planted milkweed to attract Monarch butterflies and provide the only food their caterpillars eat, “ said Director Suzanne Funk about the Monarch Butterfly Project in which all classes engage.
It takes four generations for Monarchs to migrate from their habitat in Canada to
Mexico where they spend their winters. Instinctively, Monarchs know whether to reproduce or to migrate,” explained the Director. The Butterfly Waystation allows older “student scientists” to explore, seeking young caterpillars to study in class as they harvest the milkweed on which they thrive. “Geneva is in between two zones, so we catch the second generation migrating South in the fall and the second generation migrating back North in early spring. These multi-generational visits are reflective of our own multigenerational families, “explained the Director. The school’s environmental stewardship fosters more than just care of the Earth, as school connections sometimes span multiple generations. “Children have fond memories of attending Geneva. When they graduate and move to other schools, they maintain many of the friendships they first established here. Parents continue to have get-togethers, and many teens enjoy working in Geneva’s Summer Camp. Young adults sometimes attend the same colleges or become roommates when they begin working. As adults, graduates want to provide their own children with the same happy memories, and enroll them back at Geneva,” reported the Director. Geneva’s Summer Camp, designed for youngsters 2 to 6 years of age, happily accommodates family calendar preferences for full or part-time day enrollment. Irresistible weekly themes address age-appropriate recreation, which includes arts and crafts, stories and songs, outdoor sports and water play, forest and creek walks, as well as the much-anticipated hunt for Monarch caterpillars by late summer. Such themes as Transportation, which complement a growing understand-
ing of the environment, truly touch the hearts of both boys and girls. A series of nearly a dozen specialized trucks visits Geneva to provide the “touch a truck” experience. Campers are invited to climb into the front seats so as to discover a new vantage point, manipulate steering wheels, and sound horns or sirens. The popsicle truck remains an all-time favorite, as children may select their favorite popsicle. “Campers are always asking their parents to come back for more camp time like this,” stated the Director. Just as Monarch butterflies “wing their way back” to Geneva, so too do those who know and love its programs. “Time ultimately provides green paths, for both students and Monarchs. It is amazing to realize the draw of a preschool for its many graduates,” declared the Director about Geneva’s verdant place on the map.
