Hello and welcome to the premier issue of Portsmouth City Lifestyle! I hope that you enjoy reading this publication each month as much as I enjoy bringing it to you. I’ve lived in Portsmouth since 2017. As a single person working from home, I found it challenging to forge a sense of community with the amazing people in Portsmouth and the seacoast, and to take advantage of all the events and activities taking place in the area. With Portsmouth City Lifestyle, I hope to achieve those connections, and to share a stronger sense of community with you. This community has always been intensely focused on giving back and supporting its members—throughout the year, but especially around the holidays. So this inaugural issue kicks things off with a focus on the theme of Holidays and Giving. As we recognize how fortunate we are to enjoy the holidays here, it’s also time to remember that not everyone shares in that good fortune. Look inside this issue to see how local chefs are partnering with nonprofits dedicated to addressing food insecurity, and how a Rye resident—the owner of a new Portsmouth business—is making a difference. I also share a few of my favorite things around the area, including some nonprofits that showcase local artisans, where to find great coffee, and places to have some fun, to boot. Community to Table Local Chefs and Nonprofits Work Together to Solve Food Insecurity

Portsmouth’s streets are lined with restaurants filled with diners eager to enjoy delectable dishes from our talented chefs, especially during the holidays when sharing a meal with family and friends is part of celebrating the season. But those who create this vibrant food scene know that not everyone in our community can put food on their table. Local chefs are taking the lead to eliminate food insecurity as partners with area nonprofits. The Portsmouth nonprofit Gather works with chefs and food distributors to provide nutritious food to those experiencing hunger on the Seacoast. Their Cooking 4 Community (C4C) program uses the kitchen at Great Bay Community College (GBCC) to transform donated and rescued food into delicious meals under the guidance of Culinary Director Tania Marino.

With “the generosity from chefs like David Vargas at Vida Cantina and companies like Tuckaway Tavern, Favorite Foods and Nina Parrott’s The Fifth Flavor catering,” says Marino, Gather can “diminish food waste and provide over 5,000 fully prepared meals per month to the community, including students at GBCC and local seniors.” Gather Cafe provides lowcost food options to students so they can concentrate on their studies and not worry about finding money for a meal. And seniors can enjoy three-course, sit-down meals for that wonderful restaurant experience. Chef David Vargas says, “At Vida, instead of ‘farm-to-table’ we say ‘community to table.’ It’s about more than just the food; it’s about equity and social justice. People come together at the table and I want to provide that experience for the whole New England

community.” Further, says Vargas, “My whole mindset around food has changed to how it can support the community. The community has supported me, and now I use my platform to give back.” To help future chefs continue this vital work, Vargas is developing an accredited culinary program at GBCC that incorporates his “community to table” philosophy. Students learn about food insecurity along with their restaurant training. Vargas hires younger line cooks now as part of his mission to build a more empathetic food system. “We’re not just putting out good food here at Vida; we’re building good humans, too.” Julie Cutting-Kelly, chef/owner of Portsmouth’s Cure restaurant, is a member of the Restaurant Week committee and the Northeast Credit Union’s (NECU’s) Mission Advancement Council. She facilitates NECU donations to Gather for every Restaurant Week meal purchased. She donates all excess food from Cure’s Restaurant Week menu and her seasonal menus to Gather. “This has become a tradition after every menu change and a process I share with other chefs to spread the word. Gather will take food donations in any form (even cooked) as long as it has been held to health code standards,” said Cutting-Kelly. In Kittery, Footprints Food Pantry Executive Director Megan Shapiro-Ross has strong partnerships with restaurants and food shops to support their community. For the holidays, John Flintosh of Carl’s Meat Market and his team partner with Footprints to roast chickens for individuals who don’t have access to an oven or who can’t cook for themselves. At Lil’s Cafe in Kittery, Deb McCluskey and her son and business partner Michael McCluskey donate year-round to local nonprofits helping to feed food-insecure people throughout the seacoast. “All our daily leftovers at Lil’s and The Islander Café are donated to Footprints Food Pantry and Seacoast Fridge in Kittery or Operation Blessing in Portsmouth,” explains McCluskey. For the holidays, the cafes work with Footprints to provide rolls and desserts for holiday gift baskets. Seacoast Fridge asks individuals and restaurants to drop off perishable and pantry goods to feed the community and encourages residents to launch communal fridges in their neighborhoods to ensure everyone has a seat at the community table.

JOURNEY OF PASSION AND PURPOSE From Sports Enthusiast to Financial Advisor, Mentor, and Historic Preservationist - A Portrait of Dedication If you are lucky enough to know Ray Panek, you know he is a man of boundless energy and unwavering dedication to community. His life is a testament to the power of passion, mentorship, and volunteerism spanning competitive sports, finance, and historic preservation.

Raised just outside Princeton, New Jersey, Ray eventually landed in Rye, a place he has proudly called home for two decades. Does this classify him as a local yet? From a young age Ray was drawn to competitive sports, including football, golf, racquetball, and beach volleyball. But, little did he know these pastimes would become the building blocks for his career and volunteerism. A love of sports and fitness led him to discover a passion for running, ultimately completing an impressive ten marathons, finishing his first in under three hours.

During training for the Boston Marathon, he crossed paths with Neil Wood, a seasoned professional in the Boston financial sector and an expert in cultivating lasting connections. Under Neil's mentorship, Ray honed the skills needed for his future success in financial services. Today, Ray is a Partner/ Principal at Odiorne Point Asset Management in downtown Portsmouth. Ray’s contributions now extend far beyond his client work. Driven by his love for sports and a desire to support his children’s interests, he volunteered to lead the Velo Kids Mountain Biking program. His passion for beach volleyball and his daughter's involvement on the Rye Junior High (RJH) team spurred Ray to become a volunteer coach. Dedicated to being a strong coach and mentor, he went the extra mile to become a certified Under-15 volleyball coach through the New England Region Volleyball Association. Even though his children have outgrown these programs, Ray continues to volunteer, focusing on the joy of coaching and helping young players develop skills that will serve them on and off the court. You'll still find him in the bleachers, passionately supporting his former RJH players during Portsmouth High School girls’ volleyball games. Along with his ongoing commitment to coaching volleyball, Ray finds time to volunteer as a caretaker for local landmarks White Island Lighthouse and Pulpit Rock Tower. His motivation stems from an innate desire to preserve these historical gems and contribute in any way he can. “I feel like I learn something every time I volunteer," Ray says. Several years ago, Ray played a pivotal role in saving the Pulpit Rock Tower as a historical landmark, preventing it from becoming a cell tower. Today, he serves on the Board of Directors of Friends of Pulpit Rock Tower, giving tours and sharing his extensive knowledge of the local seacoast region and its rich history. Fun fact—Ray helped orchestrate a surprise marriage proposal at the tower in October.

In true fashion, Ray’s adventurous spirit led him to pursue another passion when he moved to the seacoast in 2003—sculling. Ray has been sculling along local waterways and out to White Island ever since. During one of his early excursions to the White Island Lighthouse, Ray recognized the need for cleanup. He later crossed paths with Sue Reynolds, the head of Lighthouse Kids, a local nonprofit educating children about preserving the lighthouse. Inspired by the organization’s mission, Ray embraced the chance to be a steward and unite his love of sculling with his dedication for preserving seacoast New Hampshire’s treasures. Throughout the summer, he journeys to White Island to maintain the lighthouse. In these moments, moving across the ocean water, Ray ponders his next project– a rowing program for junior-high students, allowing them to experience the joys of sculling and open-water exploration. When asked why he wants to do this, Ray explains “Most people don’t have an opportunity to try sculling—you could easily go your whole life without having access.” And for Ray, he said “learning to row was the beginning of really being an advocate … and of connecting.” One thing is evident: Ray Panek's dedication to his community remains unwavering, and he shows no signs of slowing down.

But, a holiday that celebrates past memories and the opportunity for both new experiences and a fresh start shouldn’t lack any of the glitz of its celebratory predecessors. Round out the final days of the year reminiscing on or saying goodbye to the experiences—good and bad—of the previous 12 months with a simple end-ofthe-year gathering that isn’t lacking any of the glamour. Consider stocking your bar full of custom Champagne or bubbly choices, festive mixers like cranberry juice or rosemary simple syrup and unique garnishes like fresh fruit and herbs or decorative ice cubes with edible flowers.

the decor There’s no need to go out and buy a ton of additional decor when you just decked the halls (quite literally) with holiday ornamentation. Make those decorations work as hard as you did by repurposing all the greenery, pine cones and wood place settings you just couldn’t say no to. Throw in some neutral napkins, some natural twine and some dried orange peels for a woodsy (and fragrant) twist.

the snacks Keep your guests happy with the perfect cheese plate. Consider how many people you’ll be serving, whether you’ll be serving before or after dinner and what cheeses you’ll want to include. According to WineFolly.com, sparkling wines pair best with creamy, sticky cheeses due to the high acidity and carbonation. WHAT YOU NEED • Cheese board or serving plate • Assortment of cheeses We recommend Brie, Port Salut, Muenster, Camembert or Gruyere PUTTING IT TOGETHER Cheese is best served at room temperature, so be sure your cheese has time to rest prior to serving. Slice the cheeses and arrange artfully on your cheese board with labels for each. Consider providing separate serving knives for each cheese to avoid any mixing of flavors. Demonstrated by Spaniards as well, this tradition involves eating 12 grapes with every strike of the clock, symbolizing good luck for every month of the new year. + DENMARK Destroy your frustrations and start the year fresh by smashing unwanted glassware. Danish tradition calls for smashing plates on the doors of friends and loved ones around midnight, but we think you should probably save that part for when you’re actually in Denmark. + SCOTLAND Although its singing has become pretty standard worldwide, “Auld Lang Syne” originated in Scotland in 1788 as a poem by Robert Burns. Go ahead and make a cheat sheet for all your friends—we won’t judge.

This Giving Campaign is all about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.”

The annual City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is in its 4th year. Last holiday season we gave away over $300,000 to help 116 individuals and families in need, but we need your help to make it happen again this year. With nominations flooding in from community members and leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you, we were able to reach people who might otherwise go unnoticed. Perhaps you know of a single parent struggling to provide for their family, an elderly person who has experienced loss, someone enduring a health issue, a co-worker suffering a sudden, unexpected tragedy or a neighbor with a financial hardship who has fallen between the cracks of getting assistance. Chances are you know someone with a specific need, even if no one else does. “We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them during this holiday season.” “We believe God has blessed our company with continued success, so we in turn want to be a blessing to others,” Matthew Perry, President of City Lifestyle adds. City Lifestyle has also enacted an internal giving program whereby every employee in the company receives $100 to give away to someone in the community. “The idea is to encourage our employees to keep giving on their own,” Steven says. “Taking care of one another and blessing others is truly rewarding and it perpetuates a cycle of giving. It’s extremely important to me as a person and as a company to foster a culture of generosity.”
