Litter, bandit signs, and panhandlers are not only an eyesore in the community, but can also be a hazard. Commissioner Gray has been making great strides in the fight to clean up East Montgomery County. In partnership with the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office, Commissioner Gray pushed for the Inmate Litter Program, bringing back roadside cleanup by inmates throughout the county. Under Commissioner Gray, the Adopt-A-County Mile program was established in Precinct 4, offering Montgomery County residents and businesses the opportunity to become active in reducing the tax dollars spent to clean county roadways by adopting and cleaning a stretch of roadway. In addition to removing litter from the county right of way, Precinct 4 crews remove an average of 200-300 bandit signs placed along roadways every week. On the legislative side, Commissioner Gray championed House Bill 2012, which gives law enforcement the necessary tools to address safety and nuisance concerns caused by roadside vendors. The 89th Texas Legislative Session signed House Bill 2012 into law starting September 1st. Twice a year, Precinct 4 holds a heavy trash drop off event, providing residents a free opportunity to dispose of unwanted items responsibly. Around 250 tons of trash is collected during these events. Precinct 4's next Heavy Trash Day is Saturday, September 27th, at Bull Sallas Park. For details, visit: mctxpct4.org.

If happiness could be wedged and spun into shape, you'd find it whirling into existence at Mud & Merlot, the passion project of founder and clay connoisseur Dave Roach. After years as a graphic designer turned art teacher, Dave discovered that ceramics weren’t just a creative outlet—they were his calling. He now runs this cozy studio with a “master plan” that’s more heart than hustle: offering adults an unforgettable clay experience at a price that encourages joy-filled returns. As Dave likes to say, turning mud into masterpieces shouldn’t break the bank—and keeping customers smiling is just smart business. From the cedar-lined walls to the warm ambiance wrapping around you like a cozy blanket, Mud & Merlot greets every guest with a full-bodied blend of rustic charm and earthy inspiration. Even the cedar’s scent seems to coax smiles out of visitors before their hands ever touch clay. The Impact of Texas Barber University

Fresh Starts and Fades Barbering is a craft that combines skill, style, and personal connection—and at Texas Barber University (TBU), students learn to master all three. From sharp fades to precise line-ups and straight-razor shaves, barbering offers techniques that set it apart from cosmetology. Unlike cosmetologists, barbers focus specifically on men’s grooming services, including beard trims, razor shaves, and intricate hair designs that require expert precision. TBU students receive hands-on training along with essential skills like social media marketing and client communication to prepare for a successful career.

At the heart of the program is instructor Eric Acosta, whose passion for barbering started in high school. After honing his craft and gaining fame in Kansas, Eric traveled to Florida and then settled in Porter, Texas, where he opened TBU. He continues to travel and learn new techniques, sharing fresh inspiration with his students while encouraging them to pursue their dreams, no matter the obstacles. Eric’s advice to aspiring barbers? “Never stop doing what you love, even if you hit a hiccup. Achieving your dreams is a big step in life that no one can take away from you.” Affordable, hands-on, and community-driven, Texas Barber University offers more than just a diploma; it’s a place where creativity meets opportunity and futures are shaped one cut at a time.

The 1000-hour program typically takes about nine months to complete, blending practical instruction with theory to help students pass their licensure exams confidently. Key skills include mastering fades and designs, but also learning how to understand and engage with clients— because being a great barber is as much about people as it is about hair. TBU challenges common stereotypes, welcoming both men and women to the profession and creating an inclusive learning environment. Their mission is to rewrite the narrative around barbering and open doors for all aspiring artists. Support extends beyond the classroom. The university helps students connect with local barbershops and provides business insights to those dreaming of opening their own shops. Several alumni have already secured rewarding positions in top barbershops, a testament to the quality and community focus of TBU.

One of my happy places is sitting in front of a museum wall gallery. I can admire art for hours, and if I’m with a friend, there’s no telling how long we’ll sit, reflect, and share our individual perspectives. If you’ve admired gallery wall displays in magazines, catalogs, or on social media and would like to create one in your home, it’s much easier than you might think.

MATERIALS YOU WILL NEED:

DESIGNING YOUR GALLERY WALL

CREATIVE ARRANGEMENTS

The first step in creating a gallery wall is planning. Start by selecting a theme or color scheme that complements your space. Themes can be as varied as black-and-white photographs, abstract paintings, or a mix of personal and artistic prints.

• The arrangement of your gallery wall can follow several patterns, depending on your taste: • Linear: Artworks are hung in a straight line at eye level, creating a clean and orderly appearance. • Grid: Perfect for a collection of similarly sized frames, this layout emphasizes structure and uniformity. • Salon Style: This more traditional arrangement involves layering pieces closely together, often extending across the wall. It’s ideal for creating a rich, filled look.

• A gallery wall hanging system, which typically includes mounting rails, cables or rods, and hooks. You can find them pretty much anywhere, online or at your local home improvement store. • A collection of frames and artwork. • A level, measuring tape, and perhaps a laser pointer for precision.

INSTALL ATION TIPS: 01 MEASURE YOUR SPACE: Carefully measure the wall space where you want to install the gallery. Consider the height and width available, keeping in mind furniture and other room features.

02 LAY IT OUT: Arrange your artwork on the floor to finalize your layout. This “dry run” is crucial to get a feel for how the pieces will interact with one another. I like to use painter’s tape to create a visual of what my display will look like on the walls.

03 INSTALL THE RAILS AND HANG YOUR ART: Following the manufacturer’s instructions, mount the rails at the top of your wall. Ensure they are level and securely attached. Attach cables or rods to the rails, then use hooks to hang your frames. The beauty of the system is that you can adjust the height and position easily.

04 BALANCE AND SYMMETRY: Step back to view your layout from different angles. Adjust the spacing and alignment as needed to achieve visual balance.

Stepping onto the stage as the first-ever Miss East Montgomery County (EMC), Emma Klitus didn’t just turn heads — she turned (and won over) hearts. With poise, purpose, and plenty of sparkle, she transformed pageantry into a platform for authenticity and empowerment. Her journey began not in front of a mirror practicing poses, but behind the scenes at a dance convention, working tirelessly to support her studio. That’s where someone saw something special in her — a work ethic, a light — and suggested pageantry might be her next leap.

Preparing for competition meant more than choosing gowns and perfecting routines. Emma had to dig deep — battling doubt, confronting fear, and relearning how to see herself through a lens of strength. This was more than a title — it was a reckoning with who she saw in the mirror each day and who she could see herself becoming. The moment she walked into the interview and faced on-stage questions, she carried years of quiet resilience on her shoulders. The evening gown segment — a space where she’d once felt insecure — became a crownless coronation, proving beauty can look like bravery in motion. Although Emma may not have walked away with the Miss Texas crown, she left the stage decorated with honors for talent, fitness, and style. What truly made her shine, though, was her authenticity. She didn’t camouflage herself behind expectations or mimic a polished mold. She was real, present, and passionate — something everyone in the audience could both see and feel. Her growth from the year before spoke volumes, especially to judges and audiences who saw beyond the surface. She stood as a reminder that capability doesn’t require credentials — it only asks for courage and determination.
