Transforming Dentistry Into Holistic Health Experience

Dr. Lanette Sikes’ Innovative Approach Combines Dentistry, Wellness, and Regenerative Treatments ARTICLE BY AMBER DOBYNS | PHOTOGRAPHY BY BROOKE MADL PHOTOGRAPHY

14

M UST SE E | W EL L NES S

Her story began in a high school chemistry class at Cleveland High School, where a love for science sparked the idea of dentistry. Encouraged by her childhood dentist and a supportive hygienist, Lanette Sikes set her sights on dental school. She loved it from the start. It wasn’t a quick or simple path; the road was long and paved with determination, but her father’s unwavering support kept her moving forward. Her perseverance paid off when she was accepted, and in 1999, she graduated as class historian. Dr. Lanette Sikes, D.D.S., would later serve as national president of the American Association of Women Dentists. Does it make sense that a dentist's office could offer more than just a smile fix? What if whole-body wellness and dentistry were married? They seem to go hand in hand, a complement to one another. When you walk into the offices of Dr. Lanette Sikes, D.D.S., in Cleveland, Texas, you immediately sense that she is making that vision a reality. For Dr. Sikes’ patients, it’s not just the warm welcome or the cutting-edge technology; it’s the philosophy. For over 20 years, Dr. Sikes has been perfecting smiles, but today her mission goes far beyond teeth. Through Downtown Dental Excellence and Downtown Esthetics & Wellness, she’s redefining patient care by blending traditional dentistry with whole-body wellness and regenerative health.

As dentistry evolved, her philosophy evolved. Messy impressions gave way to digital scanners and advanced imaging, but the biggest shift came from her own curiosity and commitment to continuing education. Recently, she earned the prestigious Fellowship award from the Academy of General Dentistry, which required 500 extra hours of coursework and a rigorous exam. Along the way, she discovered Platelet Rich Fibrin (PRF), a regenerative technique used in dental surgery that also proved transformative for facial aesthetics. “The more I practiced, the more I realized dentistry is more than filling a cavity,” she says. “Oral health and overall health are deeply connected.” That realization, along with her own experience, sparked a new passion: wellness. She noticed patients struggling with chronic issues despite taking multiple medications, as providers weren’t addressing the root cause. A friend recommended the book Good Energy by Dr. Casey Means, which opened her eyes to the power of metabolic health and prevention, deepening her desire to help patients stay out of the hospital and truly heal. Today, her two clinics sit almost side by side, creating a seamless experience for patients who want to look and feel their best. Downtown Dental Excellence focuses on advanced dental care and natural-looking smiles, while Downtown Esthetics & Wellness offers regenerative treatments designed to heal from the inside out. “The mouth is the gateway to the body,” Dr. Sikes says. “When we support oral health and overall health together, the results are incredible.” CONTINUED >

The integration isn’t just conceptual, it’s practical. Patients can schedule an IV hydration drip during a dental cleaning, an idea that came to life when Dr. Sikes tried it herself during a last-minute appointment in an effort to maximize time and enhance wellness. Her innovative approach to beauty also breaks the mold of traditional med spas. Rather than chasing trends or creating an artificial look, she focuses on regenerative science, treatments that stimulate the body’s natural ability to repair and rejuvenate. Popular services include PRF for hair regrowth, acne treatments that avoid harsh medications, and hormone therapy for aging well. Dr. Sikes and her team want patients to look like themselves while leaving her clinic feeling refreshed and healthy.

16

M UST SE E | W EL L NES S

Deeply rooted in the community she loves, Dr. Sikes has spent most of her life in the Cleveland area. Her husband serves as a police officer for the Liberty County Pct. 6 Constable’s Office, giving their family an even deeper connection to the people they serve. For Dr. Sikes, confidence goes beyond a smile — it’s about helping people feel vibrant at every stage of life. She believes that true wellness means aging well, having the energy to chase their kids and grandkids, and feeling good in the process. Her vision for the future is clear: to keep listening, caring, and offering solutions that empower patients to thrive. Her advice is simple: take the first step toward better health and confidence. Whether through dentistry, skincare, or overall wellness, investing in yourself is essential; it strengthens your well-being and allows you to continue caring for those you love. Prioritizing health creates the foundation for true beauty to transform into true wellness, and Dr. Sikes is eager to help everyone achieve their personalized wellness goals.

HOW INDUSTRIOUS SPRING INSPIRES STRENGTH, WELLNESS, AND COMMUNITY ARTICLE BY AMBER DOBYNS

STRENGTH THROUGH

RESILIENCE The pulse of determination, the hum of encouragement, and the quiet power of resilience are the tones set at Industrious Spring, a functional fitness gym right off 99 by the cinema. At the center of it all is Kelly Fucheck, whose journey from stroke survivor to gym owner is nothing short of extraordinary. Alongside her husband, Glen, they bring their shared love of fitness and commitment to community to every member.

20

I NSP IR E D BY | FI TNES S

At just 32, Kelly’s world shifted in an instant when a spontaneous vertebral artery tear led to a stroke. A moment that could have ended everything became the turning point that redefined her life. Waking up in the ICU, she faced the hard truth: a stressful career, extra weight, and unhealthy habits didn’t serve her future. Rather than surrender, Kelly chose to fight. That decision sparked a journey from survival to strength, and ultimately to build Industrious Spring, a place where moxie meets community, and where anyone ready to reclaim their health can find the courage to begin. Recovery started with two minutes on a treadmill, which was once just a clothes hanger in her bedroom. Two minutes became a 5K. That 5K turned into countless races, including eight half-marathons: progression and priorities. Later, she rediscovered strength training, which reminded her of lifting weights in the firehouse with her dad. Kelly fell in love with the inclusive, barbell-driven environment of functional fitness. “My stroke saved my life,” she says. “It taught me I’m capable. Industrious Spring is my love letter to myself and my community.” That love letter is written in sweat, perseverance, and support. The gym’s philosophy, “Work Hard. Live Fit.” is simple yet powerful: anyone can unlock their potential through consistent, honest effort. Workouts blend strength training, conditioning, and intervals in a way that keeps members engaged and improving, no matter where they start. Every workout is tailored to the athlete, but still in a group setting, so the others are able to rally behind everyone; they feel both challenged and supported.

The space itself reflects that ethos. Industrious Spring’s unique HALO setup gives members their own “station”, eliminating the intimidation of waiting for equipment and fostering confidence. The team brings decades of experience in Olympic lifting, sports science, and health coaching, guiding athletes to find strength inside and outside the gym. With a focus on functional fitness, the strength built at Industrious Spring carries into everyday life, whether taking a hike, lifting kids for a big hug, or running a marathon. What starts in the gym becomes capability in the world. Community is the heartbeat of Industrious Spring. From the moment someone tries the first free class, they’re welcomed into a circle of accountability and encouragement. Transformation stories abound, but Kelly lights up when sharing client success stories like Angie, who dropped over 5% body fat, gained muscle, improved her insulin levels, and now beams with confidence. For Kelly, Industrious Spring isn’t about quick fixes; it’s about building habits that last, like the New Year Reset program, launching January 2026, where fitness and nutrition are combined. The perfect way to help members start strong and stay on course in a fun way for the new year. Industrious Spring is more than a gym. It’s proof that resilience breeds strength, and strength builds community. And for Kelly, it’s a daily reminder that hard work and a big heart can change everything.

HEALING

Through THER A PY

ARTICLE BY STACY LEACH

A guide to self-awareness, coping skills, and starting fresh in the new year.

Understanding our emotional and psychological well-being is central to living a fulfilled life, and for many, therapy is the key to unlocking that understanding. Licensed Clinical Social Worker Brooke Madl, a therapist at Unlatched Mind Counseling and Wellness, brings a compassionate and solution-focused approach to supporting individuals and families through life’s challenges. Her fascination with human psychology began in childhood, during a tumultuous period she now reflects on as formative. “I wanted to understand the why behind the decisions and behaviors that shaped my early life,” she explains. That curiosity guided her education and led her to become a Licensed Master Social Worker in 2022. After completing her clinical hours in a psychiatric hospital, she transitioned to private practice, allowing her to work more deeply and personally with clients of all ages. The practice spans a wide spectrum: supporting children, teens, and adults dealing with anxiety, depression,

26

postpartum struggles, trauma, and more complex diagnoses like Borderline Personality Disorder. “The common thread in my work is helping people understand themselves more deeply, navigate their emotional worlds, and find relief, resilience, and empowerment,” she says. Her therapeutic approach blends solution-focused techniques with systems theory, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT). This combination allows her to guide clients in recognizing and reshaping unhelpful thought patterns, regulating emotions, improving relationships, and building practical coping skills. For some, sessions take place in the traditional office setting; for others, she offers walkand-talk therapy or even casual meetings at Starbucks to create a relaxed, approachable environment. Therapy, she emphasizes, is not just for crisis moments. “It’s for anyone open to self-reflection, personal growth, and learning new ways to navigate emotions or relationships,” she says. Even subtle signs, persistent irritability, emotional overwhelm, racing

thoughts, tension, or changes in sleep, can indicate that support would be helpful. The impact of therapy extends beyond symptoms. She shares stories of clients who, over time, have transformed their relationships, strengthened self-awareness, and gained confidence. “Clients learn to not just survive their experiences, but to grow from them,” she says. As we enter a new year, Brooke encourages readers to start fresh with intentional goals, small mindfulness practices, and emotional decluttering. “Even tiny pauses in our day can create clarity and reduce overwhelm,” she notes. Most importantly, she emphasizes the power of connection, seeking support, nurturing relationships, and not hesitating to reach out for help. For those in the community seeking guidance, the practice is currently accepting new clients. “I offer a safe, nonjudgmental space where you can explore, grow, and feel more aligned with your life,” she says. Her hope is that through her work, the ripple effects of emotional health can extend throughout families, relationships, and the wider community.

U N D E R S TA N D I N G T H E “WHY” BEHIND WELLNESS ARTICLE BY ANGELA BROOCKERD PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANIE JONES AND PROVIDED

The New Frontier of Health AN INTERVIEW WITH DR. KYLE GILLETT

Why do so many people feel exhausted, foggy, or unwell, even when their medical tests insist everything is “fine”? Why are we prescribed quick fixes instead of being given real answers? Across modern medicine, a shift is happening. More patients are demanding real explanations, and more clinicians are rethinking what “healthcare” should actually mean. Leading that shift is Dr. Kyle Gillett, a dual board-certified physician in Family Medicine and Obesity Medicine and an expert in metabolic, hormonal, and preventive health. Through his clinic, research, and The Gillett Health Podcast, he’s become a trusted voice for people seeking science-based, root-cause solutions rather than symptom-based band-aids. “Functional medicine is really ‘root cause medicine,’” Dr. Gillett often says. “It’s about asking why the problem exists and not just quieting the noise.” In this Q&A, Dr. Gillett breaks down the most common questions he hears from patients and offers simple, actionable guidance anyone can begin using today.

1. “WHY DO I FEEL AWFUL EVEN THOUGH MY LABS ARE ‘NORMAL’?”

Dr. Gillett: I like to say, “There is no such thing as ‘we’ve done everything.’” We can always dig deeper. Often, the labs ordered

30

EXP E RT H E LP | L I FE + C ULT U RE

are the wrong type of assay, or important markers like ferritin or SHBG—which binds testosterone and estrogen—are completely missed. Beyond lab work, there are other factors: mitochondrial health, sleep quality, mental health, and even how sensitive your dopamine and serotonin receptors are. “Normal” labs do not always equal normal physiology for you. CONTINUED >

JANUARY 2 0 2 6 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C O M / P O RT E R

31

2. “HOW DO I FIX MY ENERGY, BRAIN FOG, OR SLEEP WITHOUT 20 MEDICATIONS?”

Dr. Gillett: Start with a good, comprehensive lab panel to assess nutrients and hormones. Then build the foundation with sleep. My favorite tool is the 10/3/2/1/0 rule: • 10 hours before bed: No caffeine • 3 hours: Avoid large meals and alcohol • 2 hours: No vigorous exercise • 1 hour: No bright blue or white light • 0: No snoozing and no inconsistent sleep/wake times Aim for 7+ hours of high-quality sleep. When sleep improves, energy almost always follows.

32

EXP E RT H E LP | L I FE + C ULT U RE

3. “IS MY GUT ACTUALLY CAUSING ALL THESE OTHER PROBLEMS?”

Dr. Gillett: Gut health influences most major health issues, but it’s rarely the only problem. Diet is my second pillar of health for a reason. Exercise, sleep, and stress reduction all improve gut function too. Even simple tools like self-hypnotherapy apps can reduce gut-related symptoms.

4. “WHAT CAN I DO RIGHT NOW, TODAY, TO START FEELING BETTER?”

Dr. Gillett: Focus on the pillars of health: diet, exercise, sleep, stress, sunlight, social connection, and spiritual health. Treat them

like habits and find ways to make them enjoyable or easy to start. Supplements and medications are supportive tools, not substitutes. Think of them like turbo chargers: they enhance a system that’s already functioning.

5. “WHAT DOES FUNCTIONAL MEDICINE ACTUALLY DO DIFFERENTLY?”

Dr. Gillett: True functional medicine is root-cause medicine, not cookie-cutter supplement regimens. Imagine an older adult with cognitive symptoms who receives multiple prescriptions from a conventional doctor. A functional approach might uncover something entirely different: B12 deficiency, hearing loss, and vision impairment. Fix those, and cognition often improves dramatically with no medications required.

6. “WHEN SHOULD SOMEONE TEST THEIR HORMONES, AND WHICH TESTS MATTER MOST?”

Dr. Gillett: Most adults should get a baseline hormone panel between ages 18 and 28, or earlier if they have symptoms like poor sleep, unexplained fatigue, or changes in heart rate. A proper panel includes testosterone, estradiol, fasting insulin, CMP, lipids (including Lp(a)), A1C, morning cortisol, IGF-1, DHEA-S, vitamin D, and ferritin. These markers catch metabolic and hormonal issues long before symptoms become severe.

7. “WHAT LONG-TERM TESTS ACTUALLY HELP PREVENT DISEASE, NOT JUST DIAGNOSE IT?”

Dr. Gillett: Preventive care is evolving rapidly. For heart health, I recommend Coronary Artery CT Angiography (CCTA) because it detects soft plaque that calcium scores miss. Knowing this data early informs you what is needed to prevent a heart attack. Instead of asking your doctor “Do I need cholesterol medication?” ask “Do I have plaque in my arteries?”. Full-body MRIs can be useful too, but they often find harmless abnormalities, which can lead to unnecessary stress or testing. Always weigh the pros and cons with a clinician who understands your goals.

A FINAL WORD FROM DR. GILLETT

“The goal isn’t to tell people what to do, rather it’s to give them the information they need to decide what’s best for themselves.” By understanding the why behind your symptoms, labs, and lifestyle choices, you become the driver, not the passenger, of your health journey.

MASSAGE & CIRCULATION

Massage plays a powerful role in improving circulation through intentional pressure and movement. By applying pressure to soft tissues, massage helps push blood through congested areas, increasing venous return and delivering fresh, oxygenated blood to tired muscles. The techniques used follow the body’s natural circulatory pathways, supporting healthier blood flow and reducing fatigue. Massage also triggers vasodilation, widening blood vessels to enhance circulation even further. These benefits help support faster recovery, reduced muscle tension, and overall improved tissue function, making massage an essential tool for whole-body wellness.

MASSAGE, IMMUNITY & RESTORATIVE SLEEP

Massage directly supports the immune system by lowering cortisol, the stress hormone that suppresses immune function. Reduced cortisol allows the body to respond more efficiently, while increased lymphatic flow removes waste and transports immune cells. This natural “garbage system” becomes more balanced with regular massage, helping reduce inflammation. Massage also promotes restorative sleep by shifting the body into “rest and digest” mode, increasing serotonin, dopamine, and endorphins. With muscle tension reduced and pain signals eased, clients often fall asleep during sessions, a sign that the body is truly resetting and healing.

AT-HOME WELLNESS TIPS

Between massage sessions, simple at-home practices can help maintain progress and support overall wellness. Hydration is essential before and after sessions to boost circulation and help flush metabolic waste. A warm Epsom salt bath before bed can ease lingering soreness and support deeper relaxation. Gentle stretching keeps muscles loose, mobile, and flexible, especially as mobility becomes more important with age. If stretching doesn’t fully relieve tension, using a heating pad can increase blood flow and soothe stubborn tightness, helping the body stay balanced between appointments.
