The Place You Call Home

Every day, we pass through spaces that reflect our tastes, our routines, and the rhythms of life we hold dear. But what makes a house a true home is not simply wood and stone, color and texture. It is the heartbeat of the people who live there and the community that surrounds them.

This March, we are celebrating home in every sense of the word—the spaces you have curated with intention, and the places where connections are formed, traditions are shared, and memories take root. Our homes provide comfort, stability, and sanctuary. Our communities give us belonging and purpose.

Within these pages, you will find inspiration to elevate the spaces you live in through thoughtful design, trusted experts, and ideas that support the way you truly live. Just as important, you will meet the neighbors, business owners, creators, and leaders who make our community feel familiar, welcoming, and deeply connected.

Home is found in the everyday moments. A friendly face at a local shop. A neighborhood gathering that brings people together. The quiet pride of living in a place that feels right. These moments are what transform a city into something personal and meaningful.

Home is not static. It grows with every shared meal, every helping hand, and every story passed from one generation to the next. It exists in the comfort of favorite rooms and in the relationships that extend far beyond our front doors.

As you turn these pages, we hope you feel inspired to enhance your home and deepen your connection to the community that makes it special.

Thank you for allowing us to be part of the place you call home.

NONPROFIT OF THE MONTH: The Source of Hope

SERVING EVERY ZIP CODE WITH LOCAL ROOTS AND GLOBAL REACH

ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF THE SOURCE OF HOPE

At its heart, The Source of Hope exists to meet people where they are and walk alongside them toward stability, dignity, and hope. Founded more than 16 years ago, the organization officially became a 501c3 nonprofit on April 13, 2013, and has since grown into a multifaceted organization serving communities locally, nationally, and internationally in more than 10 countries.

Deeply rooted in Plano and North Texas, The Source of Hope has received local, national, and international awards recognizing its leadership, innovation, and community impact. While its reach is global, its mission remains personal and community driven.

The philosophy guiding The Source of  Hope is captured in a timeless principle. Give someone a fish and you feed them for a day. Teach someone how to fish and you feed them for a lifetime.

Rather than serving only one group or one zip code, The Source of Hope intentionally supports entire communities across all zip codes, ensuring access to care regardless of background, income, or circumstance. The organization serves community leaders and frontline populations alike, including senior citizens, police departments, first responders, military families, students, teachers, coaches, and individuals experiencing homelessness.

A cornerstone of the mission is honoring and supporting senior citizens, many of whom live on fixed incomes while facing physical, emotional, and financial challenges. Through holistic wellness services, food support, and community centered care, seniors are supported with dignity, independence, and long term well-being. CONTINUED

What makes The Source of Hope unique is its integrated model. Instead of focusing on a single issue, the organization operates through five interconnected programs that address immediate needs while building long-term sustainability. Education for Hope provides tutoring, mentorship, advanced education pathways, immersion programs, and job placement assistance through partnerships with colleges, universities, and employers. Graduates of the program have achieved strong job placement success, securing opportunities with Ally Financial, Citibank, Wells Fargo, Apple, Dallas College, and many others.

The organization also operates trade school and workforce development pathways, offering hands-on education for holistic practitioners and individuals in the beauty and wellness industry. These programs focus on practical skill development, certification readiness, business training, and long-term career sustainability.

An important extension of this work is Hope for the Great Outdoors, which connects wellness, sustainability, and community through outdoor engagement. Each year, The Source of Hope hosts two major community runs. The Hope Run for Hunger Easter Run focuses on food insecurity awareness, while the Plano Turkey Trot has become a signature Thanksgiving tradition centered on gratitude, wellness, and service. Proceeds from both events directly support hunger relief initiatives and international outreach while promoting physical health, mental well-being, and community connection.

“Hope has no borders. Compassion has no zip code.”

Wellness of Hope Clinic delivers holistic health and preventive care for senior citizens, teachers, first responders, community leaders, and families. These services are supported by both local and international wellness partnerships, extending holistic care beyond U.S. borders.

Serving Hope prepares and distributes hot home cooked meals throughout North Texas, while Sharing Hope partners with nonprofits, schools, and international organizations to distribute food and essential resources locally and globally, reaching families in more than ten countries.

The Source of Hope is not government funded. Its work is made possible through donors, volunteers, corporate responsibility partnerships, and individuals who choose to come alongside the mission. There is always an open invitation for people and organizations to get involved, partner, and serve together.

Through its local, national, and international programs, The Source of Hope  moves beyond short-term relief and into true sustainability, helping individuals, families, and communities not only receive help, but gain the tools to thrive.

Hope has no borders. Compassion has no zip code. When people come together with purpose, the impact lasts a lifetime.

To support the mission of The Source of Hope  and help expand its impact locally and globally, readers are invited to donate and partner with The Source of Hope. Learn more or donate at www. thesourceofhope.org.

Local Experts Share Tips to Protect Your HVAC System, Improve Efficiency, and Avoid Costly Breakdowns

ARTICLE BY TIFFANY DITTO PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF BIG D MECHANICAL

As North Texas temperatures climb, homeowners and business owners alike are preparing for months of heavy air conditioning use. But before the first triple-digit day arrives, HVAC professionals say now is the time to take preventative steps that can protect your system, and your wallet.

“Preventive maintenance is everything. You don’t want to wait until there’s a problem to start doing things.”

“A lot of people think that turning their AC off for a few hours, and back on, will save them money, and that’s not true,” says Jennifer Stone, Marketing Director for Big D Mechanical. “It actually uses more energy, and it’s not good for your system either. You’re turning your motor on and off again; it’s like revving your car engine and slamming on the brakes over and over.”

Instead, she recommends using a smart thermostat to regulate temperatures more efficiently. “You can program it for when you’re at work, so you’re not blasting 64 degrees all day,” she says.

“Another big thing is not blocking your vents and keeping your unit free of clutter,” Stone explains. “I don’t think people realize that things get in there. They clog lines, and it can cause thousands of dollars in damage when it could have been prevented with just an easy sweep around your unit.”

That advice applies both indoors and outdoors. Sticks, debris, and overgrown landscaping can damage exterior coils, while blocked interior vents disrupt airflow and strain the system.

“Preventative maintenance is everything,” says Stone. “You don’t want to wait until there’s a problem to start doing things. It’s kind of like dehydration. Once you get to that point, it’s going to take a lot to get back where you need to be.”

Stone says one of the simplest ways to stay ahead of costly HVAC breakdowns is enrolling in a regular maintenance plan, like the ones offered at Big D Mechanical. At the time of publication, Big D Mechanical offers residential maintenance contracts for $199 per year.

Big D Mechanical currently services the DFW Metroplex. Their residential plan includes seasonal visits, filter changes, inspections, coal cleanings, HVAC advice, and more, all from experienced technicians.

“Loud noises, clanging, inconsistent temperatures, or your system just not cooling, those are signs to call someone before it completely breaks.”

“If we come out and see something wrong during one of your visits, that would be a service call, but you’re staying ahead of the game,” says Stone. “For every dollar you spend on maintenance, you save four dollars in service costs."

There are also warning signs that shouldn’t be ignored.

“Loud noises, clanging, inconsistent temperatures, or your system just not cooling,

those are signs to call someone before it completely breaks,” she says. “And when that happens, it's important to know you’re not just a number. For us, our client’s comfort is one of our top priorities, and we usually get there within 24 hours.”

Those interested in a maintenance plan can call (469) 773-HEAT or visit www.bigdmechanical.com.

LOCAL REALTOR NYLSA SHIVERS TRANSFORMED LOSS INTO BELONGING—AND NOW HELPS OTHERS FIND THE THEIR MEANING OF HOME

LOVE MAKES A HOUSE HOME

The saying goes, “A house is made of walls and beams; a home is built of love and dreams,” and no one knows this better than Nylsa Shivers. Not only is she a realtor dedicated to helping her clients find the perfect home for them, but she also knows firsthand the difference a home filled with love can make.

To begin with, Nylsa’s home life as a child was challenging. “I probably should have been in foster care,” she admits.  At fourteen, when she was old enough to choose which of her divorced parents she wanted to live with, she moved into an apartment with her father. Although he provided a more loving environment, his income was modest, money was tight, they moved a lot, and he worked nights while Nylsa went to school, participated in extracurricular activities, and worked to support herself during the day. She had her own place by age eighteen and continued to move around until she was established enough in her career as an account executive with Clinique Laboratories LLC to afford her own house, where she lived until she married and moved to Plano in 2003.

“A home to me means so much,” she says.

This deeply rooted sense of home and belonging eventually led Nylsa and her husband, Clayton, to adopt five children from the foster care system.

“From the time I was in seventh grade, I could close my eyes and picture a blond-haired, blue-eyed baby boy being handed to me,” recalls Nylsa, who has dark hair and eyes. “I didn’t realize that started a decades-long idea of adoption.”

After seven years of infertility and three cycles of intrauterine insemination (Nylsa wasn’t a candidate for IVF), Nylsa and Clay decided to look into adoption. Nylsa’s “surrogate mom”—the mother of her best friend who was a guiding force in Nylsa’s life—was a director of Royal Family Kids Camps, a camp for children in the foster system, and suggested they volunteer as camp counselors.

“Once there, it was so clear that was the direction we were supposed to go. We decided to move forward with foster care, and within two to three months, we had kids!” Nylsa says, adding that this is not the norm for adoption through the foster care system.

The Shivers fostered two young boys for six months before they returned to their biological families, which, although the goal of foster care, was heartbreaking for Nylsa. However, three weeks before the two boys went home, the Shivers got two-yearold Jonathan, whom they eventually adopted.  Three days after Jonathan came to live with them, they also got Daniel, who was forty-eight hours old and delivered straight from the hospital— with white-blond hair and bright blue eyes.

A woman of faith, Nylsa is certain God brought Daniel (and all her babies) to her by design. Despite there being no guarantees a baby will stay with the foster parent, the investigator handed Nylsa the infant and said, “Here’s what you’ve been waiting for your whole life.” In the five years Nylsa worked with that county, she never saw that person again.

When Daniel was seven months old—and the day after Nylsa and Clay decided to wait until their boys were in elementary school to foster again—they learned Daniel’s biological mother was pregnant again and were asked if they wanted the baby.  The answer, of course, was a definitive yes. Three months later, the Shivers welcomed twin boys, James and David, to their family. A year and a half later, they adopted their fifth and final child, Ellie, who is the biological half-sister of Daniel, James, and David.

Nylsa built a profitable Juice Plus+ business during nap time when her children were little before turning to a career that blended her two passions—homes and helping people. She got her real estate license in 2021 and worked for a small, luxury, boutique real estate company briefly before joining Keller Williams in 2022.

She was rookie of the year and a top producer her first year, with 60 percent of her business coming from meeting people at open houses and connecting with people. “The Lord has given me a gift for being able to hear what people’s needs are and building on those things and connecting them with the right people and things,” she says. “This plays well in real estate because I truly care about the reason behind the needs. I know you want to sell your house, but what are the reasons behind it? What are looking for? It’s more than just a house to me.”

Her first listing was $1.3 million, and the start of a long-term relationship with the client, with whom she’s worked with on five more transactions and many more referrals. She continues to be a top producer today with eXp Realty, which she joined in September of 2025.

“Because of my experiences moving so much and the environment I started in, I believe what we create as a home really matters. Helping other people make their own dreams of home a reality is a huge honor that fills my heart,” Nylsa says.

Sell with confidence. Buy with ease. She makes both happen. If you have real estate questions, go to DFWRealtor.ai or call Nylsa at 972-955-9416.

Making Homes Perfect

Rooster General Contractors Uses Integrated Flex-Spaces to Improve the Home You Love

When John Ratley and Justin Farrell opened Rooster General Contractors in July of 2023, they had one goal in mind: turn houses into better homes with zero guesswork. It seems like a lofty ambition. After all, what is perfect for one family’s home may not translate to another. But this is exactly the challenge that keeps Justin and John going. Justin grew up in a creative environment, with two parents who were involved in architecture. When Justin met John, a man who spent over a decade learning various trades in construction, it seemed like the perfect fit. Justin brings creativity to projects, while John ensures integrity in their work at each stage of construction.

So, how do they make homes better for the families that reside in them? These days, Justin finds that many families benefit from “integrated flex-spaces.”

Justin explains, “Integrated flex-space makes it so that with careful planning and master craftsmanship, a single room can serve two or more purposes. For example, a mud room may double as a pool house and a party room. Or better yet, an office might transform into a comfortable guest bedroom.

“For many families, studios, gyms, and home offices are common starting points for these projects. A family of three becomes a family of four, or work-fromhome parents need a flexible space where they can transition from home to work and vice versa. Rooster General Contractors is

the perfect fit for these kinds of projects because we don't rely on outside sources to provide solutions for unique design problems. Our team has both the design and trade background needed to solve any problem that our customers face.”

With families often having to decide between perfection and price when purchasing a new home, renovating may be the best option to love where you live. For John and Justin, the first step is ensuring clear priorities for the space.

Justin continues, “Planning takes much longer than construction in most cases. Projects that get rushed through design tend to spend significantly more time in construction than projects that are more thoroughly planned.”

“Integrated flex-space makes it so that with careful planning and master craftsmanship, a single room can serve two or more purposes.”

This is one reason Rooster General Contractors likes to utilize a “construction narrative” when planning their projects. A construction narrative is essentially the story of the project from inception to completion. These written documents offer a holistic view of what the project aims to achieve, detailing everything from design motivations to the steps required to realize the envisioned outcome. This narrative acts as a bridge, turning a homeowner’s dreams into tangible, actionable plans by a general contractor. When John and Justin consult with families, they use the narrative to ensure their projects are streamlined and transparent.

One such project required making use of existing space to welcome loved ones back home—a dining room that transitions into a guest bedroom suite. Under both time and budget constraints, the Rooster team got down to the basic needs of the design. A rough draft blueprint and two revisions later, a source of stress became a source of joy—and right on time.

The Fresh Start

A GUIDE TO PEACEFUL AND INTENTIONAL SPRING CLEANING

Take a second to close your eyes and picture this: The afternoon sun streams through your windows, casting a warm glow across the room. Outside, Robins and Blue Jays sing their familiar melody, welcoming the season’s return. A gentle breeze slips through the slightly cracked window, carrying the crisp scent of early spring as your curtains sway softly. You stand in your kitchen, pouring a midday cup of coffee, feeling lighter—hopeful even—because warmer days are on their way.

There’s something about this fresh, ethereal feeling that not only melts away the last traces of winter but also sparks a quiet urge to refresh our surroundings. The cupboards that need decluttering, the baseboards that have gone untouched for months, the unworn clothes that no longer serve us—it all calls for renewal. This is the essence of spring cleaning: clearing out the old to make space for the new, both in our homes and in our minds.

For some, the idea of cleaning feels anything but peaceful. The thought of tackling clutter and dust can be overwhelming, turning what should be a refreshing transition into a dreaded chore. That’s why we’ve created a simple, practical guide to help you navigate spring cleaning with ease, turning it into a rhythmic, intentional process that mirrors the calm of the season itself.

Bookcase Styling your

Tips for an Organized and Aesthetic Display

A bookcase is often more than just a storage unit for books; it’s a focal point of a room that can enhance the overall decor and reflect personal style. Styling a bookcase can be a rewarding endeavor, allowing you to showcase your literary collection and curate a space that feels inviting and visually appealing. Here are some tips to help you achieve a beautifully styled bookcase.

Styling a bookcase is a creative process that combines practicality with aesthetics. By using these tips, you can transform an ordinary bookshelf into a stylish, engaging focal point that complements your home’s decor while showcasing your personality and interests.

Step 1

Strategically Place Books on the Bookcase While Incorporating Decorative Elements.

When placing books back on the shelves, think about the arrangement, vertical stacks are more traditional, horizontal stacks more modern, or both for more visual interest. Adding decorative elements such as picture frames, vases, or sculptural objects to break the monotony. Incorporating items with varying heights can create a dynamic arrangement. Use larger items like art pieces or baskets on lower shelves and smaller decorative objects higher up. Aim for a balanced look while avoiding perfect symmetry. This creates an organic flow, drawing the eye naturally across the shelf. Incorporate asymmetrical groupings for added interest, mixing textures, colors, and shapes.

Step 2

Use Color Wisely and Add Natural Elements.

Color plays a role in styling a bookcase. You can opt for a monochromatic palette for a sophisticated look or introduce pops of color for a more energetic vibe. If your books are of various colors, pick a few colorful decorative pieces that complement or contrast them effectively. Integrating plants or natural elements can breathe life into your bookcase. Small potted plants can add color and texture.

Step 3

Create Zones and Add Personal Touches.

If your bookcase has multiple shelves, consider creating zones or themes for different sections. Infuse your personality into the bookcase through memorabilia, travel souvenirs, or personal artwork. These pieces add a storytelling dimension and make the space uniquely yours.

Villa d’Este:

LEGEND ON LAKE COMO

In 1568 Tolomeo Gallio commissioned a grand villa overlooking Italy’s magnificent Lake Como. After two centuries in the Gallio family, Villa d’Este became home to multiple members of the aristocracy before being transformed into an elegant five-star resort in 1873. After 150 years of catering to an endless array of famous guests wishing to immerse themselves in “la dolce vita,” Villa d’Este stands as an example of blending tradition and modernity to create absolute luxury.

Palm Beach Style:

THE ARCHITECTURE AND ADVOCACY OF JOHN AND JANE VOLK

In the 1920s, American royalty wanted to establish a winter retreat and show off their newfound wealth. Building grand homes inspired by European palaces, they created one of the world’s most famous resort towns. Commissioned to design over 2,000 projects during his sixty years of practice, John Volk’s legacy as one of the “big five” architects of Palm Beach, can now be seen on almost every street.

Learn how to integrate elegant timelessness, celebrate bold colors and eclectic patterns, or embrace the past while living stylishly in the present.

Whether you’re building a new home, planning a renovation, or your home is simply a constant work in progress, these four new releases are sure to provide the inspiration you need to transition your house into your dream home—whatever that may look like and wherever that may be. Enjoy!

THE RESIDENTIALARCHITECTURE OF D. STANLEY DIXON

Atlanta-based architect Stan Dixon has received tremendous media attention since the founding of his firm D. Stanley Dixon Architect, Inc. in 2006. His highly-anticipated debut book showcases thirteen projects from across the country. From a relaxed Jupiter Island coastal retreat to an elegant English-manorinspired South Carolina home, each project varies geographically and stylistically, highlighting a variety of different aesthetic components.

Our Way Home:

REIMAGINING AN AMERICAN FARMHOUSE

The defined style of cozy and simple living has led to a rise in American farmhouse design in recent years. Interior designer Heide Hendricks and architect-builder Rafe Churchill show how they have brought twenty-first-century living to their late nineteenth-century New England farmhouse. This husband-and-wife team combined their talents to create a historic home that is both a personal retreat designed for everyday life and a constant source of inspiration for their other projects.
