Love Thy Neighbor

February invites us to slow down just enough to notice what and who truly fills our hearts. While Valentine’s Day often centers on romantic gestures, I have always believed that real love is much bigger than one day or one relationship. It is found in the places we call home, the people we surround ourselves with, and the moments of laughter that remind us why we chose this community in the first place.

Loving where you live is not just about beautiful homes, favorite restaurants, or familiar streets. It is about connection. It is waving to neighbors, supporting local businesses, cheering on our kids at games, and showing up for one another when it matters most. It is the quiet kindnesses and unexpected smiles that turn a city into a true community.

At the heart of my own life is my husband, Gary, my forever Valentine, my steady presence, and my biggest supporter. Together, we are raising three incredible humans, Ash, Averly, and Jaxx, who remind me daily that love is loud, messy, joyful, and always worth it. They have taught me that laughter is often the most powerful form of connection and that the smallest acts of kindness can leave the biggest impressions.

This month, I encourage you to look for ways to spread love beyond your inner circle. Pay for the coffee behind you, write a note to a teacher or first responder, support a local nonprofit, or simply take a moment to truly listen to someone who needs it. Random acts of kindness ripple far beyond what we can see, strengthening our community in ways that last long after February ends.

In this Local Love issue, we are celebrating the people, places, and passions that make our city extraordinary. Thank you for choosing to live, love, and invest right here, and for helping make our community one filled with warmth, generosity, and joy.

NONPROFIT OF THE MONTH

EMPTY HAND OPEN HEART RESTORES CONFIDENCE THROUGH SELF-DEFENSE

In North Texas, a nonprofit is quietly transforming the way survivors of domestic violence and human trafficking rebuild their lives. Empty Hand Open Heart (EHOH), founded by martial artist Tracy Dickey, is giving women more than shelter and counseling. It’s giving them the tools to walk into the world with confidence, strength, and dignity.

Tracy, a 5th Degree Black Belt with more than 20 years of martial arts experience, has been teaching self-defense for nearly two decades. For over 10 years, she has traveled to shelters across the region to share her

knowledge and partnered with organizations such as Treasured Vessels Foundation, HOPE’s Door, Emily’s Place, Local Good Center, and New Friends New Life. Tracy also runs East Plano Martial Arts dojo, where she has students that also help to grow EHOH’s outreach.

What makes EHOH unique is the way it fills a gap in traditional recovery programs. Shelters already provide medical, food, clothing, and career support. But Tracy recognized that true independence also requires the ability to feel safe in everyday life. Through simple, practical self-defense moves, women learn not only how to protect themselves but also how to carry themselves with confidence.

Survivors often describe Tracy’s classes as life-changing. Tracy brings a comforting and calming presence as soon as she walks in, and she’s someone the survivors know they “can trust,” which is already oftentimes a scary new step for them. Tracy has been praised for her patience and love. She’s known to give encouragement every class to teach these brave women to stand up for themselves, not fear the unknown, and have what it takes to defend themselves and trust their own instincts, leading to a sense of strength and empowerment that carries through to their day-to-day life.

These stories highlight the deeper impact of EHOH’s mission. It’s not just about learning to block a punch or escape a hold—it’s about rediscovering self-worth. For women who have been told they are powerless, the ability to stand tall and defend themselves becomes a powerful symbol of strength found in their healing journey.

Recently, EHOH was recognized by the community as a vital new part of the recovery process for women, with $10,775 in donations through North

Texas Giving Day.  This amazing young organization also received the attention of Grapevine’s North Texas Women for Good and was selected by them to receive a grant of $8,690. These funds are helping multiply their efforts to bring self-defense classes directly into shelters, safe houses, and the local community, ensuring that women who have endured trauma can reclaim their sense of safety.

As EHOH grows, so does Tracy’s vision. She’s building a team of passionate instructors to reach more shelters and communities, ensuring that empowerment through self-defense becomes a standard part of recovery programs. Donations go directly toward classes, equipment, and survivor resources, while volunteers and partners are welcomed to join the mission.

Empty Hand Open Heart isn’t just teaching women how to defend themselves. It’s teaching them how to live without fear, embrace their strength, and step boldly into the future.

For more information or to get involved, visit emptyhandopenheart.org or connect with EHOH on Instagram, Facebook, and LinkedIn.

Educator of the Month

For Angelica-Jasmine Bates, teaching leadership starts with connection. As a Peer Assistance and Leadership (PAL) teacher in Plano ISD, she brings energy, empathy, and lived experience into the classroom, helping students grow into confident, compassionate leaders.

Ms. Bates’s journey with PAL came full circle. She was once a PAL student herself, graduating from Plano ISD after attending Jasper and Plano West. “PALs really made me a better leader within my community,” she shared.

Now in her second year leading the program, Ms. Bates jumped at the chance to guide the next generation. When the opportunity arose, she didn’t hesitate. “I wanted to be involved, and I knew that these students need the opportunity to grow within themselves,” she said. Under her guidance, students build essential skills like communication, confidence, boundary-setting, and teamwork, all while supporting their peers.

PAL classes with Ms. Bates are anything but ordinary. Students give TED-style talks to practice public speaking, mentor younger students at local elementary and middle schools, and spend intentional time with special education peers to foster inclusion. Ms. Bates believes these moments matter just as much as the curriculum. “Being a PAL student made me better each and every day, because I wanted to be an inspiration and make a difference in the community. I'm happy that I now get to encourage my own students to do the same.”

Through her approachable leadership style and genuine care for students, Ms. Bates is doing more than teaching a class. She’s helping students find their voices, their confidence, and their place in the community.

ANGELICA-JASMINE BATES LEADS WITH HEART THROUGH PAL

THE RIGHT FIT

THE RIGHT BRA CAN CHANGE EVERYTHING

For the past fourteen years, I’ve helped women step into a fitting room expecting a quick, simple bra purchase and step out feeling like entirely new versions of themselves. It still surprises people how much the right fit can change not just how we look, but how we feel. Most women come in thinking they just need something “okay” that gets the job done. But once they experience what a correct fit actually feels like . . . well, that’s when the magic happens.

A big reason this moment is so powerful is because 98 percent of the people who walk through our doors are wearing the wrong size. Most don’t even realize it. They’ve spent years adjusting straps, pulling bands down, dealing with slipping cups, or assuming that all bras are supposed to be annoying. They think discomfort is normal. It’s not.

Part of the problem is that department stores simply don’t carry enough sizes. Most stop at a D or DD cup and offer only a handful of band sizes. The smallest size usually starts at the “standard” 34 band because it’s cheaper for them (less inventory to have on

hand). The truth is women’s bodies don’t come in a limited size run. At Bella Bra Shop, we carry A to O cups and 28 to 52 bands so there’s actually something for every body.

When we get someone into the right size, the first thing that usually happens is a deep breath, like they finally feel supported for the first time in years! Then they turn and look in the mirror. Clothes instantly look better. Their shape smooths out. Their posture is instantly better. And sometimes, the emotion hits hard. I’ve had women tear up, laugh out loud, or hug me because they can’t believe how different they feel. Those moments never get old.

The goal isn’t just to give someone a bra that fits them physically. It’s to give them one that fits their lifestyle too. For many women in their 30s, 40s, 50s, and 60s, their bodies have changed over time—after kids, weight shifts, surgeries, hormones, or just life. Buying the size they wore ten years ago becomes a habit that doesn’t serve them anymore. Having someone truly see their shape and fit to that—not to who they used to be—is powerful.

CONTINUED >

“WHEN WE GET SOMEONE INTO THE RIGHT SIZE, THE FIRST THING THAT USUALLY HAPPENS IS A DEEP BREATH, LIKE THEY FINALLY FEEL SUPPORTED FOR THE FIRST TIME IN YEARS!”

And yes, once the fit is right, there are plenty of pretty and sexy options too, and those also come with comfort and support.  No need to sacrifice your fit! When a bra fits correctly, lace lays flat, styles look the way they’re meant to look, and even fun pieces feel good on your body. You no longer have to choose between looking nice and feeling comfortable. The right fit makes both possible.

Even everyday essentials—T-shirt bras, sports bras, strapless bras, and post-mastectomy styles—feel completely different when the band is doing its job and the cups are the correct volume. A good bra should make you forget about it during the day while still giving you shape and support you can see and feel.

If there’s one thing I want women to understand, it’s that you deserve to feel good every single day, not just on special occasions. Lingerie isn’t just about looking a certain way.  It's about feeling lifted, comfortable, confident, and supported in your own skin.

A well-fitted bra doesn’t just improve your wardrobe. For many women, it’s truly life-changing.

Bella Bra Shop is a size-inclusive lingerie and swim boutique offering expert fittings and one of the widest size ranges in the region, from A–O cups and 28–52 bands, including everyday bras, sports bras, strapless options, and post-mastectomy styles. With 14 years of fitting experience, Bella Bra Shop helps women feel confident, supported, and comfortable in pieces that fit beautifully. To learn more visit bellabrashop.com.

KNOWLEDGE Is POWER

She's Got Your Back in Tough Times

Life rarely unfolds exactly as planned. Relationships evolve, families shift, and sometimes people find themselves facing moments they never anticipated. In those moments, having the right advocate can make all the difference.

Jennifer M. Ilarraza, founder of Ilarraza Law, P.C., is an award-winning, board-certified family law attorney who has built her practice around guiding families through life's most personal transitions with clarity, confidence, and care. Known for her strategic thinking and steady presence, Jennifer focuses exclusively on family law-helping clients navigate divorce, custody matters, support disputes, adoptions, and post-decree modifications.

Her path to the courtroom began early. "I've always loved a good argument," she says. "I was on the debate team in high school, and I was fascinated by how preparation and language could shape outcomes." Around that same time, she found herself drawn to the TV show Ally McBeal. What resonated wasn't the drama but the idea that advocacy could be deeply human-that a lawyer could stand beside someone and help their voice be heard when it mattered most.

That early curiosity stayed with her. But when Jennifer entered the legal profession, she began her career in insurance defense, where the work was structured and technical. Over time, she realized something was missing. "I wanted to be closer to the people I was helping," she says. "I wanted my work to matter in a more personal way."

That realization led her to family law—and ultimately to the work she does today.

As her practice evolved, Jennifer learned that real advocacy looks very different from what television portrays. "It's not about theatrics," she explains. "It's about preparation, credibility, and helping people communicate their truth clearly and confidently."

She now spends significant time preparing clients for court— reviewing evidence, organizing timelines, and walking them through what to expect. She helps them understand not only what questions may be asked, but why those questions matter.

"When people know what's coming, they don't freeze," she says. "They're able to show up grounded, honest, and confident."

That perspective deepened further when Jennifer became a mother. Raising her ten-year-old has sharpened her understanding of how deeply legal decisions affect families.

"You start thinking about stability, security, and the long-term impact of every decision," she says.

Practicing since 2010, Jennifer has seen nearly every scenario family law can present. Through it all, one truth has remained constant: knowledge changes outcomes.

"Family law is complex," she explains. "Many people try to navigate it alone without realizing how many legal landmines exist."

That complexity increases when families cross state lines. Licensed in Texas, Virginia, and Florida, Jennifer regularly handles multistate custody and jurisdictional matters. Her firm also proudly serves Spanish-speaking families, ensuring language is never a barrier to strong advocacy.

“The law is complex, and you deserve someone who understands it-and knows how to fight for you.”

"I've been there myself," she says. "I know what it feels like to walk through uncertainty. There is life after conflict. Sometimes the goal is peace, but when court becomes necessary, preparation and strategy matter."

Preparation is one of Jennifer's defining strengths. She is known for thoroughly preparing clients before they ever step into a courtroom—explaining the process, setting expectations, and making sure they feel supported rather than overwhelmed.

"I've seen attorneys meet their clients for the first time in court," she says. "That's not how I practice. My clients walk in informed and ready."

Jennifer is among an elite group of attorneys statewide. Out of more than 110,000 lawyers in Texas, only 824 are board certified in family law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization-less than one percent.

"The path to certification is demanding by design," she explains. "It requires demonstrated experience, peer review, and rigorous testing. That standard exists to protect the public."

While Ilarraza Law handles all areas of family law, Jennifer has seen a growing number of clients seeking prenuptial agreements. She often describes them as a "seatbelt"—something you hope you never need but are grateful to have.

"They're not unromantic," she says. "They create clarity and protect families long-term."

At her core, Jennifer is a strategist and an advocate-guided by preparation, perspective, and purpose.

"When I step into a courtroom," she says, "my focus is simple: protect my client and help them move forward with confidence."

Love Is in the Hair

BLO BLOW DRY BAR PLANO'S LOVE LETTER TO THE WOMEN OF PLANO

Love manifests in many ways—love for friends and family, romantic love, self-love, and even loving what you do and where you live. For me, Blo Blow Dry Bar Plano encompasses all of those.

Plano has always been home for me. Opening Blo Plano wasn’t just a business decision; it was deeply personal. After an injury and surgery, I found myself unable to do my own hair. Something so simple suddenly felt overwhelming, and my confidence took a hit. I booked my first blowout out of necessity—and walked out feeling like myself again. That feeling became addictive in

the best way. During recovery, those appointments didn’t just change my hair; they lifted my spirit. They reminded me how small acts of care can transform your entire day.

That experience planted a seed. I wanted to create a space where people could feel that same sense of renewal every time they walked in. I built Blo Plano on the belief that when you feel good on the outside, it positively affects how you move through the world. Investing in looking and feeling your best is an act of self-love that has a ripple effect, instilling us with confidence—whether it’s for date night or simply for ourselves.

“Blo Plano is my love letter to this city—built from lived experience, rooted in local pride, and driven by one mission.”

Blo is also about giving time back. A professional blowout can last four to five days with the right products and guidance.  That results in fewer rushed mornings, less heat damage, and more moments reclaimed.

Consistency brings value too. Regular visits mean professional products are used every time you’re in the chair, often reducing how much you need to buy and manage at home. It’s simple, efficient, and surprisingly cost-effective.

Blo Plano is my love letter to this city—built from lived experience, rooted in local pride, and driven by one mission: to help people feel good about themselves so they can show up as happier, kinder, more loving versions of who they already are.

Three Reasons to Try Blo Plano

Confidence: Confidence and feeling loved starts with the way we treat ourselves. Taking time for personal grooming is a quiet but powerful act of self-love, and when your hair looks polished and effortless, that care shows. In fact, multiple studies link personal grooming and self-care with increased confidence and positive social interactions.

Self-Care: Love and self-care is also choosing ease and kindness for yourself to alleviate busy days. Time-saving beauty routines such as a blow dry bar blowout are consistently cited by working professionals as a key factor in reducing daily stress.

Elevate Date Night: There’s something undeniably sexy about walking into a date knowing your hair looks amazing. Not “fine.” Not “good enough.” Amazing. A fresh blowout gives you that quiet confidence— the kind that doesn’t try too hard and doesn’t need adjusting.

A Blo blowout lasts for days, which means that confident, justleft-the-salon energy follows you long after the date ends. Dinner turns into drinks. Drinks turn into plans. And you’re still feeling polished the next morning. Because confidence is seductive. And great hair? That’s foreplay.

Book an appointment and fall in love with your hair again. Call 469-931-7597 or visit https://blomedry.com/blo-plano/.

BUILDING STUDENT LEADERS THROUGH SERVICE AND CONNECTION

PHOTOGRAPHY

MERRICK MULTIMEDIA

The Peer Assistance and Leadership (PAL) program is one of Plano ISD’s most impactful initiatives, offering students a meaningful opportunity to grow while serving others. Designed as an elective course, PAL equips students with essential life skills while strengthening school communities across the district.

Offered to eighth, tenth, eleventh, and twelfth graders, the program is available on 15 campuses, including middle schools, high schools, and senior high schools throughout Plano. Students enter the program through a nomination and interview process, ensuring participants demonstrate strong character, responsibility, and a desire to serve.

“AT ITS CORE, PAL FOCUSES ON LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT ROOTED IN EMPATHY, COMMUNICATION, AND SERVICE. THE CURRICULUM INCLUDES TRAINING IN COMMUNICATION, CONFLICT RESOLUTION, TEAMWORK, AND DECISION-MAKING.”

At its core, PAL focuses on leadership development rooted in empathy, communication, and service. The curriculum includes training in communication, conflict resolution, teamwork, and decision-making. Students actively mentor peers, tutor younger students, and model positive behavior across campuses. As a result of the program, students report increased confidence, stronger relationships, and a deeper sense of belonging. When student Andrew Sims joined Plano ISD in sixth grade, he was assigned a PAL mentor. Now, as a high schooler, Andrew appreciates being able to give back. “I really enjoy the mentorship program. I love hanging out with the kids at Gulledge Elementary School. It's great being able to give them the mentorship I've been given.”

PAL students also play a visible role in improving school climate, serving as leaders during campus initiatives and district-wide service projects. PAL students lead and participate in projects that directly support the Plano community, including the annual fall sock drive, which has donated more than 30,000 pairs of socks since 2020 to various local organizations. District-wide kindness campaigns further amplify student impact.

Ultimately, the PAL program prepares students not just for academic success but for life beyond the classroom. Tenth grade student Ella Gould feels like she found her life’s purpose thanks to the class. “Once I joined PALs in eighth grade and started working with the special education students, it helped me realize that this is something I want to go into for my career. I want to make a difference in the special education community.”

By practicing leadership through service, students develop civic responsibility and a lifelong commitment to making a positive impact. In Plano ISD, PAL is more than a course. It is a foundation for future leaders who lead with heart.

THE PERFECT PLACE TO SAY “I DO,” AGAIN

A Romantic Getaway Close to Home

Hotel Crescent Court

There is something irresistible about a romantic escape that does not require traveling far. Less than an hour from home, Uptown Dallas offered everything we wanted for our anniversary weekend: elegance, intimacy, and the feeling of being truly away. At the heart of it all was Hotel Crescent Court, a place that made celebrating our love effortless and unforgettable.

From the moment we arrived, the hotel wrapped us in a sense of calm luxury. The gracious lobby, attentive service, and timeless design immediately signaled that this weekend would be something special. Hotel Crescent Court has long been one of Dallas’s most iconic addresses, but experiencing it as a couple revealed how beautifully it functions as a romantic retreat, not just a place to stay.

I chose Hotel Crescent Court for our vow renewal because it offered the perfect balance of intimacy and grandeur. We wanted something meaningful and personal, yet polished and elevated. The courtyard provided a romantic, almost European backdrop for our ceremony, surrounded by classic architecture and lush greenery. It felt private and heartfelt while still offering the flexibility to host large, extravagant weddings and events in the hotel’s breathtaking ballrooms.

One of the greatest gifts of hosting our vow renewal here was that our family did not need to travel. Being close to home allowed our loved ones to share in our love story without the stress of flights or hotels. Our

children, ranging in age from 11 to 23, joined us for the day of the ceremony and had no shortage of nearby activities to enjoy. From exploring Uptown to walking Klyde Warren Park, shopping and dining just steps away, they were happily occupied, giving us the freedom to focus on each other and the meaning of the day.

Our weekend began with welcome cocktails at Beau Nash, the iconic lobby bar where expertly crafted drinks and an impressive whiskey selection make lingering feel natural. Dinner at The Crescent Club followed, perched high above the city with sweeping skyline views and an atmosphere that blended classic club elegance with modern energy. The dining experience at The Crescent Club was nothing short of decadent. From the first course to the last, every dish felt thoughtfully crafted and indulgent, matched only by the impeccable service. The servers were incredibly attentive, anticipating our needs and personalizing each detail, creating an elevated, seamless experience that made the evening feel truly special. It was the kind of evening that reminded us why slowing down together matters.

Saturday morning brought breakfast at The Conservatory, a sunfilled glass space overlooking serene gardens. The pace of the weekend felt intentional, unrushed, and indulgent. We took advantage of the hotel’s luxe house car to explore nearby favorites in the Arts District and beyond, a reminder of how vibrant and accessible Uptown truly is.

The afternoon was devoted to relaxation at The Spa at The Crescent, where a couples massage allowed us to fully disconnect and be present together. Between spa time, lounging poolside, and strolling through the Crescent complex, including a visit to Stanley Korshak, the day unfolded beautifully.

That evening, we returned to the courtyard to renew our vows. Surrounded by loved ones and every detail thoughtfully handled, the moment felt deeply personal and incredibly romantic. It was a celebration of our past, present, and future, set in a place that elevated every emotion.

As we wrapped up our stay with coffee from Ascension just across the street, I was reminded that love does not need distance to feel like an escape. For Valentine’s Day, an anniversary, or any time you need to feel loved, Hotel Crescent Court and Uptown Dallas offer a luxurious reminder that romance can be closer than you think.

Proposed with Love

TWO LOCAL COUPLES SHARE HOW HE POPPED THE QUESTION

Love is my job. As a wedding photographer, I’m lucky enough to be surrounded by it constantly, and it never gets old. If anything, it makes me want more: more stories, more moments, more “wait, tell me everything” energy!

The following stories come straight from members of our own community, and they celebrate the many ways couples take that big, brave step toward forever. Some proposals went exactly as planned, while others endured an unexpected twist from Mother Nature. But every single one ends the same way: with a joyful “yes” and a celebration that marks the start of a lifetime together.

A SURPRISE PROPOSAL

"Michael tricked me and told me we were going to Bob's Steak and Chop House to celebrate before another grad school (for me!) and school (he’s a teacher!) semester started. This was his sneaky way of ensuring I was dressed up nicely for what was really coming. On our way, he said he needed to make a quick stop to set up something at the ArtCentre. ArtCentre is where we met working summer camps and often still helped out.

"After a few minutes he asked me to come help, and I walked into a whole set up with candles and flower petals for me! He proposed and said all of our friends and his parents were on the way to come celebrate with us! He'd planned a whole party while I had been out of town for Christmas! I was blown away, and we’re looking forward to celebrating a vow renewal soon!" - Bryna Talamantez

"EARS" TO LOVE

"We were SUPPOSED to have a romantic Valentine's Day dinner, but Snowmageddon 2021 had other plans.

We spent most of that whole week without power. It was cold. It was dark. It was rough! Around Friday the 19th, power came back on and stayed on. My then boyfriend, Fred, decided he wanted to have a late Valentine's date. He went all out—grilled steaks, baked potatoes, salad, and champagne. The champagne alone should have tipped me off! After a scrumptious meal, he said he wanted to give me my Valentine's Day gift.

"At this point, I should probably mention that I'm a teacher, and when Covid hit and we had to be online all the time for our students and staff meetings, I needed something to help me not be so grumbly about being on camera. I took a page out of Happy Gilmore's book and went to "my happy place"—Disney World. I started wearing Minnie ears on camera. It became a thing, and I started collecting them. When I opened my Valentine's gift from Fred, I found a new pair of ears! I immediately took off the burgundy ones I was wearing and put the beautiful new blue ones on. I asked him which ones he thought I should wear to school the next day.

"He dodged the question, instead asking, 'Don't you notice anything off about the ears?'"

"I took off the blue ears and spotted it . . . on one of the ears was a zipper. I unzipped the ear and found a very slim box. Within the box was a ring! At this point, I started crying all the happy tears. I said yes, then realized that he hadn't asked me anything yet! He got on one knee, proposed, and hugs, kisses, tears, laughter . . . all of it.

"He went out of his way to customize a beautiful proposal for me. He's truly an amazing man, and I am a very lucky lady." - Mantha Camacho

“I said yes, then realized that he hadn't asked me anything yet! He got on one knee, proposed, and hugs, kisses, tears, laughter . . . all of it.”
