In this season of giving thanks, we often find ourselves reflecting on the many blessings in our lives. The true spirit of Thanksgiving encourages the conscious expression of gratitude. Its focus is spending time with those that you love, and it encourages giving back in a meaningful way. While ambition, competition and slaying goals can be healthy, forgetting to place importance on being present, enjoying the ride and appreciating those around us that have helped us along in our journey, can leave us missing out on what truly matters. We’ll never be content if we look outside ourselves and at our possessions or titles to determine if we are fulfilled. True contentment comes from within and from fulfilling who we were made to be. As always, I want to extend a heartfelt "thank you" to my family for supporting me and my journey. My husband, Gary, and our children, Ash, Averly and Jaxx, are truly the biggest blessings in my life. They are my purpose, passion and proudest achievement. Our November issue is dedicated to stories of gathering, gratefulness and giving back to our community. We are thankful for the residents and businesses in our community who support so many wonderful organizations and help make our city the vibrant community that it is. Building Camaraderie and Serving The Community The Marine Corps League, a sanctuary for dedicated Marines and FMF Corpsmen who have proudly worn or currently wear the revered eagle, globe and anchor, is a place where the cherished camaraderie of their service days comes to life once more. Nathan Hanson, a past detachment commandant and paymaster, reflects on the League’s profound impact: “Many members have shared their struggles with mental health, and connecting with fellow veterans who share similar experiences has been a lifeline for them.” In the vast landscape of veteran support, countless heroes are in need but are unsure of how to access resources. As a local veteran organization, the Marine Corps League acts as a vital bridge, connecting veterans with organizations eager to help. Hanson recounts one of their success stories: “We once learned of a Marine and his 3-year-old daughter who were living in a shelter. We were able to intervene, securing them a home, aiding in job placement, fixing their car, and helping them regain their independence.” The Marine Corps League offers a lifeline to veterans when they need it most.

In Collin County, this noble initiative is spearheaded by the LCpl Jacob D. Hayes Detachment of the Marine Corps League. Collin County is renowned for its generosity, particularly when it comes to children. Toys for Tots represents more than just toys: it symbolizes a beacon of hope for families grappling with financial hardships, offering a glimpse of the holiday magic every child deserves. The program collects new, unwrapped toys and ensures they find their way into the hands of children who might otherwise wake up to empty stockings on Christmas morning. HENDRICK SCHOLARSHIP FOUNDATION Nonprofit of the Month

Hendrick Scholarship Foundation (HSF) is a nonprofit that serves Plano ISD graduates who have overcome adversity but wish to continue their education despite difficult circumstances. Named after Dr. H. Wayne Hendrick, superintendent of the Plano school district from 1961-1991, the Hendrick Scholarship Foundation has awarded over $2 million dollars in scholarships to over 440 students. Our scholars are recent Plano (TX) ISD graduates who have navigated challenges with resilience and are leveraging education in building a brighter future.

Currently, HSF is serving 80 at-risk students enrolled in college, and is providing tuition assistance through multiyear college scholarships, renewable to a bachelor’s degree. Over 65% of these students are the first in their family to achieve this goal. Shelley Strickland, HSF board member and Selections Committee Chairperson shares, “It is life changing. Having that advanced degree is going to allow that student and that family to change the trajectory of their lives.” In addition to providing scholarships, the foundation provides ongoing guidance throughout the college experience from our Student Success Committee (SSC). They support each student with coaching, mentoring, academic planning, career guidance, life skills workshops, and other basic living assistance to optimize students' opportunities for success in education and life.

There are multiple ways to become involved with HSF such as volunteering for special events; becoming an ambassador for the organization; donating to our cause, and/or becoming a Student Success Coach. “The success coach is so important because they walk alongside the student and provide them with understanding of a system that is foreign to them,” says Karen Noble, former SSC Chairperson. “They guide them through FAFSA, academic advising, and support students who’ve experienced a negative impact on their mental health.” To help an additional 25 students this coming spring, HSF has created a program that partners with community members to fully fund individual named scholarships ahead of time. NO'AH HUNTER

No’ah Hunter is a force to be reckoned with. He has a variety of talents and skills, and it's no surprise why he was nominated for Student of the Month. “At first I didn’t believe it was real!" No’ah states. Once he discovered his nomination was real, No'ah says, “I was proud because it means a lot to me knowing that I’ve made an impact on others.” No’ah’s teacher, Melissa Bunzendahl, shares that No’ah excels academically, musically, and athletically. “He is always willing to help a fellow student or teacher!” Bunzendahl adds. “He sets his goals and refuses to allow anyone to deter him from them,” No’ah’s parents share. “He’s very headstrong and determined to finish anything he starts.” No’ah has admirable goals for both his academic and personal future. “I want to keep getting good grades all year round and continue to be successful,” No’ah shares. “I want to play college sports and eventually want to obtain my PhD.” No’ah is an eighth grader, and as his freshman year is right around the corner, he knows exactly what he wants to do. “I’m looking forward to playing high school football, continuing with honor classes and the National Honor Society." When No'ah isn't hard at work, he enjoys cooking and hanging out with friends. To decompress, he meditates while sitting in a bean bag chair.
