Dog Days of Summer FOR MANY OF US, AUGUST IS A BITTERSWEET TURNING POINT IN THE CALENDAR YEAR. Summer freedom is drawing to a close, and the school bells will be ringing any day now. While the lazy days of sipping cool beverages poolside may be numbered, this month brings a sense of renewal. New routines, new clothes and new school supplies often come to mind in August. Since we dedicate issues every year to both the men and women of our community, it would only be right to celebrate some of our cutest residents, our dogs! There’s no doubt we have some serious pet lovers in our community.Meet one of them, Carrie Cohen, owner of Swoon Aesthetic Spa & Acne Clinic, and her cute four-legged mascot, Elsie. We also whipped up a recipe for homemade dog treats on Page 30 so you can spoil your loyal companions. Cheers to another wonderful month ahead. We hope to see you around!

PGH SMILE BOUTIQUE ENSURES CLIENTS ARE HAPPY, ONE SMILE AT A TIME

A BRIGHT FUTURE

18

Pittsburgh North Lifestyle | August 2019

ARTICLE MATTHEW HACKE PHOTOGRAPHY JILL HARMON

WHEN YOU WALK INTO PGH SMILE BOUTIQUE, IT'S HARD TO BELIEVE YOU'RE ACTUALLY AT A DENTAL OFFICE. Before opening PGH Smile Boutique, owner and dentist Dr. Andy Shieh worked for a large group practice south of Pittsburgh tailored to mainly family general dentistry. Dr. Shieh's main passion, though, has always been centered around cosmetic dentistry and facial aesthetics. "I was the only dentist in my previous practiced that focused on and did cosmetic dentistry," Dr. Shieh says. In order to follow this passion, he knew, after 10 years working for others, it was time for him to spread his wings and do what he wanted to do. "I'm not getting any younger, so I came to a point in my career where it was a question of, 'If I don't this now,

Can’t Breathe! • Nasal Congestion • Runny Nose • Sinus Pressure

when will I?'" Dr. Shieh pulled away from his roots in the South Hills and implanted a new foundation in the North Hills. The process wasn't without its share of risks and anxieties. "It was kind of scary because I left a stable-income environment

and

brand-new with no guarantees," he says. "But I wanted to establish my new form of dentistry business in a Pittsburgh area that has seen its share of growth climb exponentially over the years." Since Dr. Shieh was new to the area and with his unorthodox idea of a luxury dental boutique, one of the practice's biggest initial goals was getting the word out about the business through social media and earning positive online reviews. "Those were the two main marketing focuses that I emphasized on to create a huge online buzz," Dr. Shieh says. In particular, Dr. Shieh used Instagram as his main marketing tool to help establish his practice and to share his beautiful case results. "In early 2018, we started our Instagram account with zero followers and zero Google reviews, and now today, we have more than 21,000 followers on Instagram and 104 positive all five-star customer reviews on Google." Once the word was out about PGH Smiles Boutique, Dr. Shieh was able to focus on his main passion: creating happy patients with happy smiles.

A BRIGHT FUTURE

(CON TI N U ED)

"Once the foundation of the business was set, I evolved into doing mostly only two procedures," he says. "Now I mostly do smile transformations/makeovers with cosmetic veneers and lip enhancements with fillers." Other popular procedures he does include Invisalign, Botox and dental implants. Today, PGH Smiles Boutique has even exceeded even Dr. Shieh's expectations. "I created a luxury, high-end cosmetic dentistry practice because I didn't want patients to feel like they were in a regular dentist's office," he says. "Our clientele has really come to appreciate that factor and luxurious feel of comfort, and because of that, everything with my business so far has been great. I just want to continue to keep making sure we exceed our clients’ expectations and are satisfied with their cosmetic results." PGH SMILE BOUTIQUE 904 Warrendale Village Drive, Warrendale 724.799.8100, PGHSmileBoutique.com

Ultimately, Dr. Shieh wants to keep creating happy smiles. "We guarantee results. If the patient doesn’t like the result, we take the time to work with them to make sure they get the results they want," he says. "Because in the end, all that matters is when my patient is smiling."

Boosting Confidence and Self-Esteem

ARTICLE MATTHEW HACKE PHOTOGRAPHY MICHAEL TOMKO

MORE THAN THREE YEARS AGO, CARRIE COHEN WENT FROM WORKING 16 YEARS IN THE FINANCE INDUSTRY TO MAKING A HUGE CAREER CHANGE. A few personal tragedies made her realize that life truly is often too short. "I left my job to focus on my own health and just be there for my kids as they were growing up," Carrie says. Once her kids were older, the timing was right for Carrie to explore a completely different passion in her life: skin care. "My daughter started struggling with her skin, which is when this passion really came to the forefront of my life again,” she says. Carrie took classes and engaged in online seminars and webinars, but initially, she never anticipated a job providing skin care treatments. With that and an impassioned drive, Carrie set out with her finance background and her newer mission: creating confidence and helping others feel beautiful. Carrie officially opened Swoon Spa in 2016 in the Wexford area. Treatments the practice specializes in include working through active acne, cystic

BOOSTING CONFIDENCE AND SELF-ESTEEM

(CON TI N UED)

While Carrie treats patients of all ages, the bulk of clients are between middle school through college age. Needless to say, the teenage years can be difficult enough to begin with, but add social media to the mix, and it can often exacerbate social anxiety. Carrie's goal is to help these kids feel more confident in school and to boost their self-esteem so they aren’t avoiding social situations. "There is such an unrealistic expectation with social media. Everyone is posting photos with filters," she says. "So they’re seeing this unrealistic perception of what they should look like, and when they don’t see that in the mirror, it’s really hard on their self-esteem." At Swoon Spa, Carrie and her team take a holistic approach, looking at all the factors that could be contributing to the patient’s acne. "I take the time with the patient that we need to take, making sure I answer all of their questions, especially the first time or two they come in," Carrie says. After assessing the patient's diet and skin care habits, as well as what their daily routines are like, Carrie and her team come up with a tailored acne treatment program for the patient while keeping it all as simple, affordable and realistic as possible. 24

Pittsburgh North Lifestyle | August 2019

What sets Swoon Spa apart from others is not only their love for connecting with their patients, but also that they never recommend or use antibiotics or topicals to treat the skin. "We see a lot of people who come in who have been on very heavy dosages of long-term antibiotics, and they’re trying to fix one problem but are creating another,” Carrie says. "For example, we’re seeing issues with their GI tract or yeast infections. The list of side effects goes on." A typical treatment includes getting all of the infection and bacteria out of the skin and unclogging the pores. Patients then continue with their home care plan in conjunction with coming in once a week (or more) for treatment until the skin improves. "From there, we start to treat any scarring or pigmentation issues, so it's a pretty quick turnaround, relatively speaking." While Carrie is the owner and founder of the business, her dog, Elsie, a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, runs the show. "Elsie is our little spokesdog, our mascot," Carrie says. "She greets everybody at the door, and some patients even ask if she can sit up on the treatment bed with them because she is really comforting and a good distraction." Ultimately, while Carrie has made her passion a reality, the connection with her patients is truly what makes her realize she has found her calling. "For a patient, in particular for kids and their parents, to have that sense of relief that they’re finally getting some help and that they’re seeing improvements—not just in their skin— but again their confidence and self-esteem, it’s very, very rewarding and keeps me going."

This open-concept dining area features impeccable trim details with the coffered ceiling and the rustic wood shiplap wall. This unbelievable, covered patio brings the indoors outside. A built-in grill, wood and stone details, and marvelous light fixtures complete the space.

With several options for both the interior and exterior of the homes, Infinity allows customers to choose from and put their unique touches on everything in the home. "We have a lineup of six floor plans that we use as starting points, and then our clients work with the sales team to customize them inside and out," says Amanda Druschel, sales and marketing manager at Infinity. "Our goal is to build a truly unique home for each individual family so that no two homes are alike." The goal of the company is to really customize each home to each individual family depending on how they want to live and function in it. To start, potential buyers can view one of their decorated model homes, open seven days a week. "The investment in our models truly sets us apart from other custom home builders," Amanda says. "We understand that people not only want to touch and feel the space so they can visualize how they would live in their new home, but they also love to see a variety of different options as we are constantly creating new and unique spaces within our models." Infinity Custom Homes' models are a key part of the company's success. LOCAL LIMELIGHT

ARTICLE MATTHEW HACKE

AFTER WORKING FOR 28 YEARS FOR OTHER LARGE AUTOMOTIVE GROUPS IN THE BUTLER AREA, AARON SHEARER KNEW IT WAS TIME TO HIT THE ROAD AND START HIS OWN BUSINESS. In June 2018, he opened Route 228 Auto Mall with another business partner. Having just celebrated his company's one-year anniversary, Aaron is only speeding up with his business and showing no signs of slowing down. Luckily, we were able to catch up with him and talk shop. WHAT ARE THE SERVICES AND DEALS YOU PROVIDE AT ROUTE 228 AUTO MALL? We sell late-model used cars—a lot of '17, '18 and '19 models. Everything I have is very low in mileage. We have a service shop, which does oil changes, tire rotation and alinements. We also work on brakes, mufflers, shocks and other light maintenance things. We have a detail shop here as well, and we have a 24-hour stateof-the-art car wash. Plus, every one of our cars comes with a lifetime powertrain warranty. CAN YOU TALK A LITTLE BIT ABOUT HOW YOU AND YOUR STAFF OPERATE AND WHAT YOU DO ON A DAILY BASIS?

In the Driver's Seat WITH 28 YEARS OF EXPERIENCE UNDER HIS BELT, AARON SHEARER HAS FINALLY TAKEN THE WHEEL AS HE CELEBRATES ONE YEAR IN BUSINESS WITH ROUTE 228 AUTO MALL 34

Pittsburgh North Lifestyle | August 2019

I have 14 employees: salespeople, technicians, detailers, lot attendants, a service manager and a finance manager. Six people who I previously worked with followed me to this business, and a lot of our clientele has followed me from the Butler area too. My staff is what keeps people coming back! YOU JUST CELEBRATED ONE YEAR IN BUSINESS, SO WHAT IS ON THE HORIZON FOR YEAR TWO AND THE FUTURE? I would love to be large enough that I can close up my service center here at the dealership. I would then turn my service center that I have now into an indoor showroom and someday build a separate building just for my service department. I want to take care of the community, and I want the community to take care of me! If customers are happy with their cars and the service, all will work out.
