Pam Santoro embodies true connectivity. She understands people, forges bonds easily (and everywhere), and is driven by an authentic desire to help others. “There’s probably more good in the world than bad. If you can see the good in people, that’s the best thing.” solely on what’s best for them to uplifting senior services across North Atlanta, Pam focuses on the goodness embedded in all people, with no ulterior motives. This perspective highlights how she moves through the world by building relationships and networks that support her work and neighbors. Pam began her professional journey as a Systems Analyst right out of college. She later left the corporate world to raise her two children, and real estate came into her life when they were in high school. Her degree in Computer Science and Business made her friend, Pat Baumgardner, suggest she join her brokerage. With Pam’s interpersonal finesse and clear comfort with all things technological, Pat was sure she would thrive in real estate. Shortly after, Pat passed away, and Pam believes she put her on this path in a fate-filled move.

Our homes require more than a practical eye; they require an emotional one, too. For Pam, “It’s more about just helping people than the money.” She offers completely honest feedback, from walking away from a sale to recommending fewer renovations based on individual need; she truly cares about what is best for her clients, their families, and the future. The trust she engenders speaks for itself. She has amassed a huge network of clients, contractors, and friends in high places. “I collect people, you know,” she says with a smile. Only someone who truly loves and appreciates the beauty of humanity can cultivate community in this way. Her specialty is “right-sizing”, which optimizes living spaces for seniors, families in transition, luxury clients, and those in the midst of relocation. Pam’s powerful network-building comes in clutch here; CONTINUED >

she’s the woman with all the phone numbers you need. Her wide net of trusted contractors renovate and repair with integrity. Value adds are key, and each person’s expertise yields higher sales returns, with a special focus on senior safety where needed. Pam in particular can spot potential hazards in a way most other real estate agents cannot. Her penchant for friendship also helps her clients when they require referrals from other industries; from elder law attorneys and estate sale teams to local social services, she has the most reputable names and numbers to share. This unconditional care aligns seamlessly with her realtor tagline, “No one sells a home like a mom.” Her heart’s work lies in the Senior Resource Alliance of North Atlanta (SRANA). Pam founded the networking group eleven years ago in direct response to a desperate need for senior services. What began with six people has evolved into a network of over 900 contacts across Sandy Springs, Dunwoody, Alpharetta, Milton, and Johns Creek. Their focus is raising awareness and resources for a plethora of senior-related nonprofit organizations and specific causes. Through donations at every meeting (instead of membership dues), spotlights, and community events, the SRANA uplifts those living with Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, visual impairment, and more. This is another area where Pam’s extensive network is a real service. She’s connected with senior care professionals and even local emergency services to improve home (and overall) safety. Pam’s passion for senior care came about many years ago. After she and her family noted distinct changes in her grandmother’s demeanor, they discovered an in-home care worker was mistreating her. She knows all too well the vulnerability that becomes inescapable at a certain age and how vital it is to provide a safe and empowering environment. One data point she’s discovered is that many families wait too long to transition into senior living, which can result in new residents missing out on social connections while they’re still active. That communal

atmosphere and its events reap the greatest benefits for each resident. At the forefront of all Pam’s initiatives is a sense of camaraderie and genuine care for others’ well-being. She’s always been someone who fosters friendships, connects others, and adores doling out resources and network referrals. “There's probably more good in the world than bad,” Pam tells me. “If you can see the good in people, that's the best thing.” This philosophy propels her and attracts those who view the world the same way.

Her innate belief in goodness accelerates everything Pam puts her mind to. That, combined with her razor-sharp intuition, leads to synchronistic happenings all the time. Often, someone will tell her about a need they have, and right after, she will come across just the right person to help them. The community Pam cultivates is remarkable. When asked how she pulls it off, she responds, "There are no strangers, really. You talk to people." When you stay open, listen closely, and take action, wonderful things can happen.

Cranberry Chambord Chutney 16

There always seems to be a debate of some kind or another on whether homemade cranberry sauce or canned is best for your holiday table. Whether you are in the homemade camp or the canned camp, this recipe is a must-try for everyone. It’s easy and packed with yummy goodness! And if you’re in the canned camp, you may surprise yourself that you ever thought canned was the easiest route to your table! This sauce is a great addition to your poultry or pork when fresh cranberries are in season, but frozen cranberries can certainly be used in a pinch.

Ingredients • 1-pound fresh cranberries • 2 cups sugar • 2 tart apples (such as Granny Smith), peeled, cored, and diced • 1/8 teaspoon ground cloves • 1/8 teaspoon allspice • 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon • zest of 1 lemon, cut into julienne strips • zest of 1 orange, cut into julienne strips • 1/3 cup Chambord liqueur

Cooking Instructions 1. Rinse and pick over cranberries. Discard any that are green or mushy and remove stems. 2. In a 2-quart saucepan, place cranberries, sugar, and diced apples. Cover the pot and cook over medium heat until the mixture comes to a boil. (No need to add liquid.) 3. Uncover and stir in spices. Cover and simmer for 10 minutes. Uncover and add lemon and orange zest. Cover the pot and cook for another 5 minutes or until the mixture has thickened and the berries have popped. 4. Cool for 5 minutes, then stir in the Chambord and refrigerate until serving time.

THE DANCING Duo

PAT LEVY AND RICHARD EASON SPEND THEIR TWILIGHT YEARS TWIRLING AROUND TOWN. ARTICLE BY NATALIE FOX

Pat Levy and Richard Eason

Drinks, dinner, and dancing were the go-to date-night format mere decades ago. Now, the joy and connection inherent in formal dance is a lost art. This highlights why Richard Eason and Pat Levy’s exquisite moves have built a reputation across Sandy Springs and Dunwoody. The dancing duo, aged 90 and 96, respectively, twirl and waltz all over town. Strangers often lavish them with compliments, sometimes with tears in their eyes; the sheer magnitude of praise astounds them both. While the beauty of dance came into both their lives at completely different times, they are fully aligned in their dedication to enjoying life in the here and now. Richard and Pat met “through divine intervention,” according to Richard, at Mount Vernon Tower. Richard’s friends had been begging him to attend a dance social there, and he finally relented, even though he insisted he wasn’t a dancer. Their mutual friend, Charlotte, introduced the two. Pat, a lifelong lover of dance, was impressed by Richard’s “natural sense of rhythm.” Even so, she suggested he take formal lessons, specifically to nail down the waltz. They both take the craft seriously. Three years later, these sweet friends still dance regularly together and have amassed quite the fan base along the way.

It’s an incredible thing to live full, multi-faceted, and very long lives; it’s even more incredible to find new friendship and fellowship in one’s twilight years. While Richard and Pat seem bewildered at all the attention they receive, insisting they aren’t the most skillful dancers in every room, it’s easy as an outsider to understand the fascination. It’s not only rare to see formally trained couples dancing at everyday community events; it’s practically an anomaly to see two people in their nineties enjoying themselves more than anyone else in the room. Dance is life-enhancing, joy-emit t ing , and demands a level of agility many aspire towards. Pat and Richard move, spin, and jive in total sync. Pat, a UC Berkeley alum, went to university at a time when many women didn't. Her own father didn’t approve. "He said, ‘Well, Mormon girls like you, they don't go to college.’ And I said, ‘I don't care. That's where I wanna go.’" Go she did. She met her husband at university and continued to enjoy ballroom dancing her entire life, often across the globe, and her passionate determination is evident in her dancing style. At 96 years young, she’s in tune with her body, with perfectly timed footwork and an unmistakable elegance.

Richard worked as a highly successful trial attorney for 50 years, a performance in and of itself, with a 90% success rate in jury trials. "I just love to stand in front of the jury, hands out like Billy Graham, you know?” Richard says with a twinkle in his eye. “It's almost as much fun as dancing." That charisma still emanates not only in his dancing style but also in his openness. He’ll pull up Pandora at the drop of a hat, often the Dean Martin station, then offer his hand to women so they can dance, whether at a live music event or in the produce aisle. It’s vital for all of us, in every era of our lives, to get out of our houses and connect with our communities. Pat and Richard do so with total gumption, which easily explains their revered reputations. Dance serves as a unifier. Both Richard and Pat now know that regular dancing, and the network it creates, also acts as a salve on grief. Aging has its hardships, but the joy of dance softens the edges. When I ask Pat where they like to dance, she replies immediately, “Everywhere, anywhere. We dance anywhere there's music." Richard and Pat inspire people all over the city to feel the music, honor dance as an art form, and enjoy themselves no matter where one is or what everyone else is doing.

“Aging has its hardships, but the joy of dance softens the edges.”

This month’s favorite discoveries from our Publishers.

Sandy Springs and Dunwoody offer such incredible experiences and services that we have been delighted to discover! For this month, we branched out into four categories to get the lay of the land. First, we invested in a stunning tasting event at Rays on the River, where our family enjoyed delicious food and drink, and we were all captivated by the live music and mingling with neighbors. Greg went to Chastain Park Golf Course to play a few rounds, and he found the course absolutely beautiful. Then, we found an incredible happy hour deal at Dunwoody’s FOGO de Chao. It’s the perfect weekday indulgence! Rounding out the month, we treated our sweet dog, Gracie, to a spa-like haircut at Robin’s Groomingdales. We are so thankful for the wonderful people and places we’ve come into contact with thus far. As we continue into the holiday season, we can’t wait to see what December brings!

Playing Chastain Park Golf Course for the first time was an amazing experience. Located within a bustling neighborhood, the course offered scenic views that made every moment enjoyable. The fairways were well maintained, the greens were smooth, and the overall course conditions were excellent. Each hole provided its own unique challenge, making the round both rewarding and exciting. I can't wait to play this course again.

All Day Happy Hour at FOGO de Chao has become one of our favorite outings. You don't have to partake in the main menu of meats to enjoy the fun and lively atmosphere here! Catherine Lautenbacher Aims High A LOCAL VETERAN BRINGS COMMUNITY UPLIFT TO DUNWOODY AND SANDY SPRINGS.

Catherine Lautenbacher is a wife, mother, Director of Leadership Perimeter’s Flagship Program, Councilwoman for the Dunwoody City Council, and a veteran. She was born and bred in a military family: “My mother was a Navy nurse, and my father was a Navy supply corps officer,” Catherine says. After heeding the advice of her father to go into the Air Force, known as a better environment for servicewomen, she joined up, leading to valuable lessons that have lasted her a lifetime. Catherine joined the Air Force as an Intelligence Officer and served for four years, between the First and Second Gulf Wars. She supported humanitarian aid drops over Bosnia and assisted with supply drops into Somalia. “The work was so exciting,” she says with a smile. “There was never a dull moment." Now, she utilizes her strong belief in after-action reports, learned through her time in the service, to improve processes at Leadership Perimeter’s Flagship Program. It’s an incredible opportunity for local leaders, wherein “The end result is that these folks will be more involved in the community than they were before,” Catherine, an alumna of this very program, explains. Her commitment to supporting her fellow neighbors doesn’t stop there. As Councilwoman for the Dunwoody City Council, she brings her strong ability to guide and her love for the city. “I grew up moving around all the time, and then I got into the military, and I still kept moving,” Catherine tells me. “This is the first time I've lived anywhere for a long period of time. I love this city, and I'm not moving.”

Beating the Heat and Conquering the Cold Since 1993! At Air Control Heating and Air, we’ve built our reputation on treating customers with respect and providing quality service at a fair price.

Comfort you can feel. Service you can trust. Tired of not having your phone calls returned? Sick of feeling like just another number in a long queue of customers? Our customers used to feel this way about the service they received from other HVAC companies. That’s why we opened our doors in 1993—to give North Atlanta families and businesses a distinctly “uncorporate” HVAC experience. That means transparency, expertise, and on-demand service from a family-owned company that cares. We offer both Residential and Commercial Services and specialize in Installation, Repairs, Duct Work, Maintenance, and Air Duct Cleaning Services.

dBAtlanta brings ever-evolving expertise and total transparency to meet your home’s needs.

Robert and Andre Hames are unequivocal experts in the home realm. The fatherson leadership behind dBAtlanta understands the intricacies of construction and design while honoring the importance of a team that synthesizes their separate scopes of genius into a cohesive offering. This dedication to continual learning helps them stay ahead of the curve, so clients receive recommendations that are 5 to 8 years ahead of current code standards. It’s not about ego or what they personally think looks best; they integrate how you and your family actually live within a space. They also address underutilized areas in a home. While the initial idea of outfitting a cross-functional pantry doesn’t sound as glamorous as updating a primary bath, it’s equally exciting for dBAtlanta, as the possibilities to enhance practicality positively impact their clients’ everyday lives. "Regardless of where the space is in the house,” Andre says, “Being a little more intentional about the design and how you're going to use the space is something that we really try to focus on with clients."

The home construction industry is multi-faceted and endlessly evolving. Some of today’s most innovative solutions involve energy efficiency, where a home’s “building envelope” is the focus. Home performance, air quality, and even sound modifiers enhance lifestyles over the long term. Imagine less expensive utility bills, easier breathing (especially during cold and flu season), and the ability to soundproof your home office. These techniques are rising in popularity, especially in dBAtlanta’s remodels, and some repeat clients add these environmentally beneficial upgrades over time. One of the greatest gifts Robert and Andre offer is best-practice options alongside pressure-free education. "Here's what code requires. That really is not where we would recommend stopping. We would recommend starting here,” Andre explains. Additions include open-cell foam, closed-cell foam, continuous insulation, dehumidification, and energy recovery ventilators. In layman’s terms, there are multiple ways to ensure an airtight house through taping and sealing. By staying on top of the latest building science (they particularly look to expert Matt Risinger), dBAtlanta provides top-tier information for every construction, remodeling, and design project. Collaboration is key at dBAtlanta. The home building industry encompasses around 100 trade disciplines. Over two decades in this work taught Robert that "it works best when the entire team is integrated together. The salesman has a lot they can learn from the project manager and the designer and vice versa." By removing the need for third-party experts, it’s easier to stay on budget and manage every aspect. From architects to sales, project managers to designers, dBAtlanta has built a team that works synergistically. At the root of every expert included is a dedication to total transparency. Honesty is the moral compass that guides their firm. They want their clients to lay all their cards on the table at the beginning so everyone can work together as one team. You won’t find pressure-filled sales pitches here; Robert and Andre strive for long-term trust, instead of pushing immediate, first-meeting decisions. At dBAtlanta, you’ll find a team of rigorously screened experts who are fully committed to their clients while learning as much as they can about the changing industry landscape. By incorporating the newest products and methodologies, they ensure that they and their team continually invite delightful challenges and never fall into formulaic processes. "We tend to run our business the way we would want to be treated,” Robert says simply. The golden rule rules at dBAtlanta.

E V E RY DAY

Thankfulness How to set your day up for gratitude. ARTICLE BY VANDA TEIXEIRA

30

H OW TO | WEL L NESS

The art of setting your day for gratitude starts with you. When you begin your day feeling that there is meaning and purpose, you create an inner foundation from which everything else can unfold.

Step 1: Begin with a Breath I have found that on mornings when I just reach for my phone, I lose those sacred moments with myself that set me up for a higher flow. Instead, I breathe gently and put my hand over my heart as I ask myself, “What am I grateful for?”

Step 2: Name Your Gratitude Feel that one thing you seriously appreciate about your life. You can chant a series of gratitude mantras for all that surrounds you, but until those words touch you with meaning, it won’t shift you.

Step 3: Connect to Your Surroundings When the morning sun is vibrant and alive, feel sun rays through your body. You’ll feel its magic, and in that simple awareness, life is beautiful. Gratitude for these moments of stillness, aliveness, and potential fills your heart with joy again, triggering gratitude and love.

Step 4: Set an Intention Before you step into your day, set a meaningful intention. One that feels just right for you. Tell yourself and start with: “Today, I will look for what is working in my life, what is meaningful, and what is possible.” Simple mornings are the best and most efficient. Keeping it intentional is your golden rule. Gratitude is not something you wait to feel; it is how you choose to see yourself and what is happening, and therefore how you act and live your life.

GIVING TOGETHER A Community That Shows Up

Every year, City Lifestyle sends checks to hundreds of families in need across the country through our annual Giving Campaign and our nonprofit arm, Kingdom Building Foundation. But none of it would be possible without you. We can only help the people we know about, and

that’s where our readers come in. If you know someone quietly struggling, whether it’s a single parent, a senior citizen, or a family facing something they never saw coming, we want to hear their story. Nominations are what make this whole campaign possible.

We provided a chair lift for a teenager paralyzed in a gymnastics accident so she could move freely through her own home again. We helped a child who lost an eye to cancer get the prosthetic because insurance wouldn’t cover it. We covered dental work for a man who needed his smile back just to walk into a job interview. We got heat turned back on for a family who had spent part of the winter without it. We helped a family keep up with bills while a husband and father fought pancreatic cancer, and we helped another family cover medical expenses after the unimaginable loss of a child. These are just a few examples of some of the hundreds of individuals that have been helped through nominations from readers like you. None of it happens without someone noticing first and speaking up. "We don't just send checks," says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle.

“We send a message: You are seen, you are loved, and you are not forgotten.” Together with City Lifestyle President Matthew Perry, Steven has helped shape this into a tradition that goes far beyond the holiday season. "This is about community," Matthew says. "We believe we've been blessed, so now we get to be a blessing." Often, the person making the nomination gets just as much out of the experience as the recipient. There's something powerful about being part of the reason someone else's burden got lighter, especially when that need might have otherwise gone unnoticed. The campaign is completely confidential. No names are ever shared or publicized, and nominating someone is as simple as telling us their story. We are looking for those in our communities who fall between the cracks of getting help, and together as a community, we can meet those needs.

Nominations open November 1st and close December 3rd. To nominate someone in your community, follow @CityLifestyle on Instagram and find the form in our bio, or visit KingdomBuildingFoundation.org.

This season, giving starts with you. Let's do it together. Nominate someone in need today.
