HELD UP MY GALOSHES AND RAINCOAT. Of course, growing up in Michigan, those showers might be frozen, one last snowfall to trudge through. Here in Dunwoody and Sandy Springs we wait for the tulips, azaleas, lily of the valley, and crocus to pop up to reward us after months of bare branches and cooler temperatures. SPRING is here! A season of promise, reminding us to get outdoors, tidy our yards, take stock of all we are blessed with. On Easter Sunday, April 4, families will gather, and maybe your worship will take place outdoors, socially distanced, but ever full of thanks. I'll be standing on the steps of my church where we just started worshiping outdoors again, pausing to share our gratitude and promising to pass it along. Perhaps this month on Earth Day, April 22, you'll make a pledge. Check out the ideas at EarthDay.org. 1. Passionate about certain environmental issues? Volunteer with us at EARTHDAY.

Project Learning Garden provides numerous lesson activities or "Explorations" (organiz ed thematically in "Collections") for every grade level - Kindergarten through 8th Grade - organiz ed by grade band.

ART SIMON IS THE GREENHOUSE MANAGER OF THE DUNWOODY COMMUNITY GARDEN AT BROOK RUN PARK AND ORGANIZES THE ANNUAL PLANT SALE THERE. He is also one of the growers who has worked to tend and harvest produce for Project Giving Gardens, school gardens funded through the Captain Planet Foundation based in Atlanta. This job as a caretaker farmer of school gardens that have been lovingly planted and tended by young students was elevated during the pandemic. When the Foundation approached him this time last year, they quickly formed a partnership that helped the Foundation distribute 2,000 plants grown by the Dunwoody Community Garden farmers into metro Giving Gardens, plants that might have otherwise have gone into a compost pile because the garden couldn’t hold its popular annual plant sale due to COVID. Leesa Carter-Jones is the CEO for Captain Planet Foundation and explains how Project Giving Gardens - a new program started in 2020 as an extension of the Foundation’s school Learning Gardens – are planted and funded as a response to the pandemic. “The need for fresh foods at local food pantries is strong, and now from March – September, we will have 10 urban growers, 200 school garden sites and 22 community gardens growing food for Atlantans experiencing food scarcity.” She said the precious school Learning Gardens benefit children who learn not only where their food comes from, but maybe even how good vegetables actually are!

WHEN GARDENING DOES GOOD (CONTINUED) With 550 Learning Gardens nationwide and 325 here in Atlanta, this hometown program has deep roots here. “In 2011, the idea came to fruition and since the demand from schools has increased,” says Leesa. For an initial investment of $3,000, schools get a raised bed garden, lesson plans, garden supplies, and information on training and how to manage the land during the summer when the small farmers are not on the property. “A cooking cart is also included so students can reap then eat what they sow, learning so much along the way.” Gardens can be used to create context and for teaching/ applying concepts and skills across all subjects. Project Learning Garden provides numerous lesson activities or “Explorations” (organized thematically in “Collections”) for every grade level – Kindergarten through 8th Grade - organized by grade band. These Explorations can be easily integrated into your scope and sequence and are aligned to support Common Core and Next Generation Science Standards. ARTIST’S PALETTE (CONTINUED)

PULLING INTO OUR HOME FOR THE WEEKEND, MOUNTAIN DWELLER, JUST EAST OF BLUE RIDGE, WE WERE GREETED BY THE SMILING FACES (BEHIND MASKS) OF THE LOCAL TEAM FROM VACASA, THE VACATION HOME MANAGEMENT COMPANY. Traveling during a pandemic had left us edgy, but seeing the caring humans behind Vacasa’s “Premium Clean Program” put us at ease immediately. Their expanded housekeeping measures meet or exceed CDC recommendations and align with guidance from hospitality industry experts and for us, that meant everything. The place was spotless (and I’m a harsh critic). Mountain Dweller, a five-bedroom, four-bathroom log cabin-style home includes a separate 1-bedroom in-law cabin and a small wooded yard. The stand-out is the wrap-around porch, screened at one end to house a mammoth stone fireplace complete with a nearby huge woodpile and a substantial poker made from a golf club shaft. It’s touches like this (not overly kitschy and downright handy) that made this house special. A long picnic table and plenty of bentwood seating on the second story porch gave us room to spread out, eat outside and watch the horseshoe competition below. A basement level family room (handy for early morning toddler tv time) opened to a patio with the hot tub and access to the yard. The photos on Vacasa.com provided an excellent walk-through, but the wonder of that wrap-around porch can’t be captured in images, only in memories. Booking with Vacasa gave us confidence before heading up for the weekend, knowing that the owner cared enough about the property to put it in the hands of professionals. For vacation property owners, the company offers 24/7 guest support (no more midnight texts), premium cleaning, dedicated local teams and, of course, marketing and paperwork. The company manages thousands of cabins, lake houses, monthly vacation deals, ski in/out rentals and oceanfront homes coast to coast. Need to reschedule your trip? No problem. You can move your reservation dates with no change fee if you do so at least 7 days before check-in. Or, switch your reservation to another Vacasa home. For any new reservation, you can cancel within 24 hours of booking and receive a full refund. After that, cancel at least 7 days before check-in and Vacasa will deposit a Future Stay Credit into your Vacasa account for you to use up to 15 months after the day your credit is issued. Check out Mountain Dwelling’s open dates at Vacasa.com/unit/40999 26

way for residents to still enjoy his culinary direction in the safety of their own homes. Holiday events and gatherings were also reworked as virtual celebrations to provide a sense of normalcy – virtual Easter egg hunt, Mother’s Day bouquets and floral kits, and a virtual Fourth of July race. Hong says the success of this effort has propelled the club into looking for additional ways to engage members who don’t live at the club full time but still want to remain connected or benefit from the amenities. Streaming fitness classes and the like are in consideration. Aside from the Reynolds Together effort, the community’s location and natural environment made it the ideal escape for many members and their extended families looking for refuge from their primary residences in larger cities across the country and Atlanta. The outdoor elements and amenities provided members a necessary outlet away from the constant stress of working from home and e-learning. Hong says a young family he recently spoke to found themselves scrambling last spring when school went from in-person to online while the parents were both working, but the ability to access tennis, pickleball, basketball courts, virtual tennis tips, and virtual fitness classes in the early days of the pandemic gave them, physically, the engagement they needed as a family. Another member had waited until his children were grown to take up golf but still hadn’t until the pandemic hit. Finding himself with more time, he took a golf lesson. A lesson has turned into multiple lessons and playing nine holes in the afternoon. Having access to a safe, outdoor sport encouraged his wife to ride along. She then took lessons, and now the couple connects with multiple neighbors/couples for afternoon golf outings. Now, that’s Reynolds Togetherness.

Horton comes to CAC with extensive leadership experience with international nonprofits in the realm of lifting people out of poverty. A Chemical-Free Home

DIY Laundry Scent Enhancer If you have ever added those popular scent beads to your load of laundry before, you know how lovely it is to pull your amazingly scented clothes out of the dryer. The funny thing about a product like that is it truly has no purpose other than adding a good smell, but it does add lots of chemicals to your daily life! There's a safer and more beneficial way to make your clothes smell heavenly. Try this DIY scent enhancer with your next load of laundry and put it to the test.

Ingredients 3 parts Epsom Salt + 1 part Baking Soda + Essential Oils

Directions Mix your ingredients together in a jar or canister and scoop about ¼ cup directly into the washer basin before adding the clothes—just like you would with scented beads. Continue with your laundry like normal.
