Happy Holidays, One and All FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER, MY CHILDREN WILL NOT ALL BE UNDER MY ROOF FOR THE HOLIDAY. They are 18, 21 and 26, all independent creative humans. I love being with them, not only because I am their mother, but also because they are interesting, engaging, political, funny and… good helpers in the kitchen. I depend on them to keep me current with today’s music. I made a shared playlist on Spotify called, “Mom, listen to this.” Thanks to them, I have Lizzo, SZA, Leon Bridges and Dzihan & Kamien on my phone. (I’ll share a few finds with you, if you’re interested. Go to: SeeSueGo LifestylePubs V1 on Spotify.) I’m bracing myself for a holiday without all the chicks in my roost. I’ll invite an otherwise solo friend to the table, so there’s another voice in the conversation and not a sad empty chair in the room. I’ll send a card and loaf of pumpkin bread to my daughter’s boyfriend’s family so there’s a little piece of me there with her. I’ll try not to cry, or if I do, I’ll escape to Kroger to pick up just one more thing and let loose in the car. I’m sure your holidays will be different this year. Whether it’s because the faces around your table have changed or because your life has changed. It’s inevitable. Let’s promise each other we will embrace the new and make the day meaningful for those around us. Focusing on others always makes us feel better. Stronger. STAYING AT LOVELY RESERVA CONCHAL IN THE LUSH GUANACASTE REGION OF COSTA RICA, I HAD A CHANCE TO USE MY HIGH SCHOOL SPANISH. “Muchas Gracias,” I enthused, when the smiling bell hop helped me out of the airport car. “Mucho Gusto,” he replied. Wait, what happened to “De nada?” I think his reply roughly translated to, “with much pleasure… my pleasure!” And, as I spent the next few days getting to know the rolling and verdant hills of the 2,300-acre beach-side resort, I learned that for my hosts, showing me a little slice of their country was indeed their pleasure. And, providing me with never-ending heart-felt hospitality was also their pleasure, not just their employer’s mission. It was on the 18th hole that I met a 3-foot long bearded dragon who made it clear with that I was NOT to play through. Patience. Pura Vida. I was lucky enough to play a few holes with the pro, Carlos Rojas Soto, who offered me excellent tips and ice cold slices of watermelon mid-course from a friendly server patrolling the back nine. Colleen works with clients near and far and the final work of art, hand-lettered and illustrated is sent as numbered prints in any amount required. In addition to the personal memorial pieces, she also does large, detailed work to preserve the legacy of families, birthdays, retirements, etc. Colleen studied illustration at the Creative Circus, the two-year Atlanta portfolio school for designers, copywriters, photographers and art directors who go on to work in top advertising and design agencies. She earned her Master of Fine Arts from SCAD and was teaching at the Creative Circus until recently. She is now a full-time illustrator and spends her days trying to use her talents to create, and spread, joy and hope every day. Colleen credits a trend as consumers are embracing products made by hand. “We saw this same trend in the late 1800s as the industrial age mechanized everything. In the early 1900s, the arts and crafts movement settled us back into beautiful design and an appreciation for fine craftsmanship.� She is all about leaving technology behind, embracing the texture of the paper, the density of color applied by hand and the love that she pours into each and every love letter.
