t the turn of the last century, Americans started to warm to the idea of taking a vacation. While their work ethics were stronger than ever, Americans needed structure to their holidays, purpose to their play. In 1874, American Methodists founded Chautauqua Lake Sunday School Assembly in New York. The Martha’s Vineyard Camp Meeting Association in Oak Bluffs was the original summer camp meeting place. At the northernmost end of the train line from Detroit, the Methodists also set up camp, with the intent to edify vacationers through a balance of spiritual, educational, recreational and musical enrichment and another Chautauqua was born. My parents met at this Bay View, Michigan, campus in 1946, where some 450 cottages were built in the early 1900s, festooned with gingerbread and never-ending porches. Two inns, a huge auditorium, classrooms, a darling library, picture-perfect chapel and tiny post office dot the piney campus where generations of families have spent summers together sailing, singing, worshipping, exchanging ideas and making vacation look smart. My kids are now counsellors at the day camp, and teach swimming and sailing, having grown up spending summers with the kids of my childhood summer friends. There are current affairs lectures, painting classes, full moon kayak excursions, ice cream socials and classical music recitals and concerts performed by music students and resident professionals from around the globe. Yes, I’m all for vegging out on vacation and can stare all day at the theater of clouds, waves or dancing tree tops. But, I bet you’ll agree that the most memorable vacations are those that took you someplace you haven’t been…on the map or in your head. I hope you’ll enjoy this issue full of travel stories.

ural hush under the canopy of trees, amid fallen branches, scattered rocks, lush ferns, multi-hued mushrooms, and broken tree stumps. Walking where the only interruptions are snapping twigs, chirping birds, rustling leaves touches the soul. Last fall I hiked 30 miles in three days on the Appalachian Trail in Shenandoah National Park in Virginia. I loved every minute of it. Shenandoah National Park is stunning. As it bursts into fall color, hiking conditions can be an ideal combination of sunny skies, crisp air, cool temperatures. Shenandoah National Park offers more than 500 miles of trails, including 101 miles of the Appalachian Trail, a famed footpath that stretches 2,180 miles from Georgia to Maine. It passes through 14 states, yet nearly a quarter of the Appalachian Trail is in Virginia. The specific route I trekked is about 10 miles each day from inn to inn. Hiking to an inn is more elegant than camping since a hot shower, prepared dinner and clean, comfortable bed wait as reward at the end of each day. There’s no need to haul overnight gear, but it’s still a challenge in rugged backcountry with a moderate incline.

Step onto the Appalachian Trail behind the Skyline Drive guard station

at the Swift Run Gap park entrance and the trail slopes gracefully up. The view for the first 20 miles is mostly trees. As you grow familiar with the forest, however, distinctions become clear. In some sections tree bark is mostly black, in others white. Some areas are ripe with fungus, others with ferns. There are sections littered with twigs and branches, others where huge boulders lean over the path. Most of the trail is stomped earth, parts are strewn with rocks. The sheer beauty of the forest is captivating; I’ve never taken more pictures of trees! Being immersed in such a remote setting unclutters the mind and fills lungs with fresh joy. Following the Appalachian Trail is easy. White swaths are strategically painted on trailside trees. Trail markers stand at all trailheads and intersections. Metal bands are stamped with directional and mileage information. Follow the arrows north, stay on the trail, take

Big Meadows Lodge, the second overnight stop, is named for the large grassland nearby. Built in 1939, it offers 97 rooms in a main lodge as well as rustic cabins with fireplaces. Guestrooms are clean and cozy with a retro ambiance. Beyond basic essentials, enjoy TV, temperature controls and an upholstered chair. The lodge offers a dining room, tap room, craft shop; the nearby Wayside station has gas pumps, another restaurant and large store. Both restaurant menus feature American favorites like fried chicken, burgers, fried eggs and pancakes. Preparations are straightforward and spot-on. Skyland Resort, the third inn, sits at the highest elevation along Skyline Drive. Once a private resort (circa 1910), it’s renovated into the most upscale accommodation I’ve yet found at a state or national park. There are 178 rooms of different styles plus a gift shop, taproom and full-service restaurant that could hold its own against any contemporary farm-to-table Southern restaurant. Local ingredients as well as local wines and craft brews are on the menu. Completing the hike was bittersweet: I was proud to achieve my goal yet didn’t want my days on the trail to end. I shall return!

Nairobi, Kenya, to see my cousins who live there. Then, on to Bushtops Camp in Masai Mara. We took a flight from Nairobi directly to the camps conservatory. It was amazing right from the landing strip. Alfred and our driver met us with drinks and a snack. Charle was our driver and AMAZING! He was the driver for the BBC's "Big Cat" show. He knows the game park incredibly well. We saw everything we wanted minus the rhino. And that was not without him trying his best. He found tracks for the rhino, dung of the rhino, and even places the rhino had eaten, but no rhino. There is only one currently in the park. Charles has been with Bushtops for seven years. Most of the employees there have been with them for a very long time. I have never seen a cheetah or a leopard in the wild and this trip I saw both!

Co-chairs include Lauren Toporek Hulsebos, volunteer with Ian's Friends Foundation, Diane Curtis, Development Coordinator of Second Helpings Atlanta and Caryn Kroll, whose grandmother lost her battle with ovarian cancer, is representing GOCA. "Last year's event was a wonderful way for the community to get together and celebrate all the good happening in Sandy Springs," says Cheryl Yagoda, founder and vice president of Ian's Friends Foundation. "Food That Rocks was a great way to meet new neighbors, sample the great food in our area, and find out about charities doing amazing work - all in our back yard!" ith its seventh show taking place this month, it’s no wonder that the Dunwoody Art Festival has become a beloved tradition in

the Dunwoody community. The festival takes place on Mother’s Day weekend, offering the family a unique opportunity to spend quality time together while enjoying art, live entertainment and local food. As the largest art festival in the Dunwoody area, the festival has been known to attract crowds of more than 60,000 people each year, and festival organizers expect this year will be no different. Festival-goers can expect to find art and artisan crafts ranging from handmade jewelry to paintings to home décor. The Dunwoody Art Festival features 150 artists from across the country who repre-

Students from these schools have painted one-of-a-kind chairs that will be available for bidding or to buy on the spot at a special “buy it now” price. The auction is open from the start of the festival until 3 p.m. on Sunday, at which point chairs may be picked up by the winners. In addition to exploring the artists’ booths, festival-goers can try tasty treats from food trucks from the surrounding area in the festival food court. Whether you want to stay savory with gourmet lobsters rolls or indulge your sweet tooth with a homemade donut, the options are endless. Food and a show? The food court is located beside the live entertainment stage, where festival goers can enjoy performances from local acts. While parents shop, children can hang out in the Kidz Zone where they participate in games, ride inflatables, or create a masterpiece of their own with arts and crafts activities. These activities are sure to keep kids entertained for hours, giving their parents ample time to explore the booths. The Dunwoody Arts Festival will be located at the Dunwoody Village Parkway on May 13 and 14, rain or shine.
