In the bustling city of Pensacola, Florida, where the Gulf Coast's emerald waters kiss powdery white sands, a dynamic entrepreneur named Kevin Fox is reshaping the landscape of vacation rentals. Born in Atlanta and a graduate of Georgia State University, Kevin's journey into the world of hospitality was sparked by an elective course in Tradeshow Management, a decision that set the stage for a remarkable career. Kevin's initial exposure to the industry came through an internship at Portofino Island Resort, selected among 40 other interns from across the country. That summer in Pensacola Beach, a place he had never visited before, became a pivotal chapter in his life. His natural talent for sales shone brightly, leading him to be the first to sell club memberships at Portofino, marking the start of his successful career in hospitality. Nonetheless, as the internship reached its successful conclusion, Kevin found himself returning to Atlanta, believing that his days in Pensacola were a closed chapter in his life. However, it was a call from the owner of a property management company that brought Kevin back to Pensacola in 2010, coinciding with the oil spill crisis. It was here that Kevin truly honed his skills, transitioning from restaurant work to becoming a masterful sales director, managing over 300 condos and ensuring their occupancy. A crucial turning point in Kevin's career came a decade later when he stood at a crossroads: venture into medical sales or embrace the world of property management. Influenced by his sister's words, emphasizing the choice between being another corporate employee or pursuing the American dream of business ownership, Kevin chose the latter. This decision led to the birth of Foxy Vacations, a name inspired by an affectionate nickname given by a Portofino owner and a testament to Kevin's unique and engaging business style. CONTINUED >

Kevin's journey as an entrepreneur wasn't without its challenges. The transition from a sales-centric role to a multifaceted business owner, especially during the tumultuous times of the COVID-19 pandemic, tested his resilience and adaptability. The pandemic hit hard, halving his inventory and nearly bringing his business to the brink of closure. However, a fortuitous investment from a Californian investor during this critical period not only saved his business but also propelled it to new heights. With a keen understanding of the real estate market, Kevin expanded his horizons into property development. He now manages a diverse portfolio, including eight employees and over 50 properties across various locations. His involvement in real estate has led to significant projects like Covington Place, Romano Residences, and 101 Bayshore, blending his expertise in hospitality with real estate acumen. Kevin's personal life is as dynamic as his professional one. A lover of sports, he enjoys attending events from college football to F1 racing, finding joy in the adrenaline and excitement of the action. His philosophy of life is reflected in his work ethic, where he sees no clear divide between work and leisure, embracing both with equal enthusiasm. For those looking to follow in his footsteps, Kevin's advice is grounded in the reality of entrepreneurship: the necessity of resilience, readiness for adversity, and the importance of bouncing back from setbacks. He draws inspiration from his parents and former bosses, who instilled in him the aspiration to own a business and the values required to succeed. Looking ahead, Kevin has ambitious plans for 2024, including developments near Water Street in downtown Pensacola, focusing on individual residences and affordable housing. His story is not just a tale of business success but a narrative of passion, resilience, and the pursuit of a dream, making him a true exemplar in the vacation rental industry and beyond. Keep up with Kevin at foxyvacations.com or follow him on Instagram @foxyvacations.

WINE COUNTRY

EQUALS WINE CULTURE ARTICLE BY ALEX BOYKIN | PHOTOGRAPHY BY ADINA PRESTON

I have not had a week go by in the last few months where someone hasn’t said: “I cannot believe all of this is going on here!” The “this” are all of the wine events. The “here” is the Pensacola area. According to any map of wine, we are not “in Wine Country.” But are we? What comes to mind when you hear “Wine Country?" Tuscany, Napa, perhaps the terraced slopes of the Douro. Probably places that grow grapes. Not only does Wine Country conjure up images of beautiful vineyards but when you are in Wine Country you can also drink that fermented grape juice. Sounds like such a fun place! What would it be like to live in Wine Country? It would be really fun. Well, if you look around at any one of our local wine tastings, you will see people drinking that fermented grape juice and having fun! Wine Country is so much more than a place where grapes are grown. So, I say: We do live in Wine Country! Wine Country, just like any Country, is a place that has an identifiable, unique, and ubiquitous culture. To me Wine Country = Wine Culture. Pensacola has a unique and super fun culture, especially with wine, and it surprises people constantly. There are many reasons why this culture exists here and not in our closest large neighbors to the East and West. A few of those reasons are our long and diverse history, the constant influx and mixing of

“I cannot believe all of this is going on here!” people (a lot due to our military bases and not just Navy, but Air Force, Army, and honorable mention to the Coast Guard), and the fact that we live in a part of the world where many people travel to have fun. The result of this mixing over such a long period of time is a culture that likes to enjoy enjoyment, and wine is a natural fit. During the slowest week, there are three wine tastings and several wine happy hour specials at some of our best restaurants. Last week there were SEVEN wine tastings around town, from Tuesday through Saturday! That should not surprise any of you, but it does surprise many people, both new to our area and those who have been here for quite a while. This week you could have had a great sparkling wine at The East Hill Bottle shop tasting, jumped around Tuscany at the Beyond the Grape tasting, sampled some great food and wine at Anna’s monthly tasting, played in the

18

mystery wine game at Aragon’s tasting, had an amazing charcuterie board and wine at So Gourmet’s tasting, partaken in a few amazing wines from Argentina at AJ’s Market, talked tasting profiles Friday night at the Bottle Shop on Baylen’s tasting, and capped it off with a great pizza and wine at Wine World. Each one was a great time, with fun people enjoying the company of other wine lovers, not wine snobs! Gulf Coast Wine was created to give a home to our amazing local wine community, to share our uniquely fun wine culture, and to show how approachable and inclusive wine really is. In partnership with Pensacola City Lifestyle, we will take a monthly look at our local wine scene, highlight local profiles, showcase some fun wines, and enjoy the journey and experiences together! So, we do in fact live in Wine Country, one that, in my opinion, is actually more fun than several of those listed on the map! Cheers to that!

B re a k i n g t h e Ic e : HOW WILD ICE SKINCARE IS REDEFINING BEAUTY NORMS

ARTICLE BY ADINA PRESTON PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED; ADINA PRESTON

22

M UST SE E | BEAUTY

FROM HUMBLE BEGINNINGS TO REVOLUTIONARY SKINCARE

The story of Wild Ice Skincare, a brand that has now become synonymous with disruption, innovation and purity in the skincare industry, is deeply rooted in a journey that began under the austere conditions of communism in 1993 Siberia. The founder, Mila Busch of Wild Ice reflects on her childhood, where luxury items were a rarity, and skincare was a privilege often crafted from garden fruits and vegetables using age-old folk recipes. This upbringing instilled in her a deep appreciation for natural ingredients, efficacy, and value - the three pillars that would later become the guiding principles of her brand.

NEW YORK: THE LAND OF OPPORTUNITIES AND CHALLENGES

After moving to New York, Mila’s quest to find skincare products aligning with her principles of natural ingredients, efficacy, and value was unsuccessful. This unmet need in the market fueled a resolve to develop her own product line. Mila embarked on a journey of experimentation, creating products with fresh, cold-preserved ingredients, beginning with traditional Aleppo handmade soaps. Initially intended for personal use, the soaps quickly gained popularity among friends and family. This small-scale soap venture laid the foundation for what would later flourish into the distinctive skincare brand we now know as Wild Ice Botanicals.

THE CHILLING REVELATION

Mila crossed paths with Andrew, who would become both her life partner and business ally, in 2010. Andrew

was serving as an Army MEDEVAC pilot in Fort Hood, Texas, at that time, with his final mission involving crash rescue operations for a flight school in Alabama. It was Andrew's unwavering support and encouragement that inspired Mila to transform her passion into a tangible venture. Armed with years of diligent experimentation and an MBA, Mila brought her dream to fruition by launching a skincare brand that became a beacon of freshness, natural ingredients, and exceptional quality. A significant turning point for the brand occurred in 2018 when the couple introduced the innovative practice of refrigerating the brand's ingredients, akin to how food is preserved. This scientifically endorsed approach significantly boosted the products' efficacy, capturing the attention of customers. The source of this newfound acclaim was initially a mystery. The moment of revelation came during a visit to a major skincare retailer, where Mila observed that even canned coffee was chilled to maintain freshness, unlike skincare products. This realization prompted a strategic pivot for the brand, leading to the commitment to refrigerate all its products. This distinctive approach would soon become a defining feature of Mila's brand, Wild Ice.

DEFYING CONVENTIONS: THE BIRTH OF WILD ICE

Wild Ice's dedication to chilling its products led to a major decision when a significant retailer opportunity arose. The retailer's reluctance to chill the products in-store was at odds with the brand's core value of efficacy. In a bold move, Mila and Andrew withdrew from the deal, choosing to uphold their principles over commercial growth. This defiance against industry CONTINUED >

produces limited batches in-house, prioritizing quality and sustainability by avoiding conventional packaging materials such as bubble wrap and styrofoam.

A UNIQUE APPROACH IN A SATURATED MARKET

MORE THAN JUST A BRAND: A FAMILY LEGACY

Today, Wild Ice Botanicals stands out in the skincare industry, not just for its unique cold-preservation method, but also for its innovative approach to production, the unique product naming and packaging. The brand operates from its own studio, where each product is meticulously crafted from scratch, adhering to FDA guidelines, and maintaining a strong policy against outsourcing. Mila emphasizes the company's conscious approach to scaling Wild Ice, ensuring that growth aligns with their core values. Collaborating exclusively with smaller boutiques that share their commitment to chilling products, Wild Ice ensures that their items remain fresh up to the moment of sale. The brand's use of custom glass and wood bottles showcases its dedication to innovation and environmental stewardship. Setting itself apart in the industry, Wild Ice

If you meet Mila and Andrew, you will quickly understand that Wild Ice will always remain a small family business at heart, evident in their presence at open-air markets along the Emerald Coast. The brand's philosophy extends beyond just selling products; it's about treating each customer as part of their family. This ethos is embodied in every aspect of Wild Ice, making it not just a skincare brand, but a lifestyle choice for those who value tradition, innovation, and a deep sense of community. wildicebotanicals.com | @WildIceBotanicals Locals can currently experience the Wild Ice products at the Cryo850 Spa in Destin and at the Pearl Spa in Rosemary Beach.

“In the end it’s all about family, and that’s exactly how you deserve to be treated - as family.”

Finding a life partner just might be easier than finding someone you can travel with. When the stars align, both partners have an affinity for generally the same kind of vacation, or are willing to compromise. Here are a few ideas for fabulously romantic getaways. Bon Voyage!

Traveling can be as stressful as it is sublime. Exhausting as it is inspiring. Traveling as a couple requires additional planning and communication with a healthy dose of patience. Much like marriage! But, waking up in a faraway place, exploring unknown terrain together and leaving your routine and all its trappings behind can be therapeutic. You both can take on new roles and release tired habits.

Share planning and talk about your goals for the trip. Do you want to completely unplug or will one of you need excellent wifi to call into a few meetings?

If you’re parents, consider setting boundaries for texting and phone calls so you can put the phone away and immerse in one another. Let the kids know you will be checking your phone at a certain time each day (and stick to that). Let the grandparents or caregivers handle the day to day drama.

4

Take turns charting a course for the day. On day one, you check museum opening times, get the timed tickets and find a nearby spot for a healthy lunch. On day two, you sit back and let your partner call the Uber and source out the perfect shopping district, walking distance to a park. Enjoy the ride, either way.

The SideCar cocktail, reminiscent of the World War I era, is my favorite for unwinding, fitting the vintage vibe of Seville and The District in downtown Pensacola.

Food so amazing it reminds me of eating in some of the best restaurants in New York and Chicago. Family favorite. Cozy and electric energy! Always a great night at George’s.
