As summer begins to wind down and the start of school commences, the carefree days of slower morning routines and spending more time adventuring is exchanged for busier school and sport routines and schedules. The summers tend to progressively feel like they fly by the older we get, as do the years, but the simple pleasures of summer never get old. Although the routine of school for our children is often a welcome friend by the time August rolls around, it is generally a little bittersweet. Our August issue is dedicated to the cutest members of our community— kids and pets. They both have a way of making us feel special and their loyalty and sense of wonder is refreshing. In this issue, we are highlighting kids who are making a difference in our community. We also wanted to share a few of our go-to spots to enjoy with kids and fur-kids. As summer comes to a close, we hope you are able to take some time to relax and spend time with the ones you love. This month we spotlight Malia Shaw - a budding young entrepenuer that has already published her very own childrens book. We also highlight Miguel Gonzales, whose Euphonium prowess has propelled him to international recognition, and Dog House Pet Salon shares its list of top family friendly dogs along with some helpful grooming tips! Mr. Euphonium Students from high school to college freshmen level from around the globe send in their recordings. They bite their nails anxiously awaiting a reply to see if they were chosen. Only six students out of thousands are chosen internationally in each musical section for the semi-finals. From those six, it is down to three for each instrument that get to perform in a live competition. Recent high school graduate Miguel Gonzales made that top 6 and competes this month in Michigan for the semi-finals of the prestigious Falcone Festival. When hearing the stories of proteges, one always wonders when and why did someone start, for Miguel it was not too long ago. “I started playing the euphonium in 6th grade. My motive initially for joining band was because my brother was in band and I always thought the activity was cool, plus the instrument was distinct” says Miguel. As someone who had previously never listened to instrumental music and was not influenced by any artists, this hard working and dedicated musician’s mastery of such an unusual instrument is paying off this year. Miguel is an accomplished musician, routinely placing in the top half in regional competitions and, most recently, finally achieving first place in the Texas Music Educators Association, a sponsored Allstate event audition process he competed in throughout high school. However, managing the normal day-to-day obligations of teenage life, in addition to honing his musical craft, is no easy task. Like many his age, Miguel has responsibilities at home and

maintains a part-time job all while setting aside time to practice his music on a daily basis. He admits that proper planning is the secret to navigating such a hectic schedule. Miguel advises those with similar aspirations to “set realistic goals, do research on their desired instrument, know the opportunities you can get in the future, and choose something unique.” You can regularly find Miguel pacing in solitude with the focus and calmness of an Olympic athlete while listening to famous euphonium players like David Childs and Steven Mead in his headphones. Nervousness and performance anxiety before competitions are typical, but for Miguel what drives him is to sound like his role models and have his best performance ever.

When Dreams Become a Reality TWO STABLES OFFERING EQUINE THERAPY AND PURPOSE FOR INDIVIDUALS WITH SPECIAL NEEDS

ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY CHRISTY WHITE There are stories out there of individuals having a dream and through that dream they find their purpose. A purpose so strong that with shear determination it manifests itself into a reality so beautiful it goes above and beyond the dream. In 2008 Andrew and Sasha Camacho were graced with a daughter name Solana who was born with down syndrome. Like many children Solana became obsessed with something and that one thing was her love of horses. Like many parents they searched high and low for an equestrian program to fit her needs. However, on this journey they began to realize finding a local program that provided encouragement, consistent lessons, and inspiration was easier said than done. One night, Andrew

dreamed that he and his wife built a program for all individuals with disabilities. The dream led to much research, fundraising, and volunteering that in 2016 it took shape and is called SoléAna Stables. Partnering with Big Wish Farm in Alvin, Tx, SoléAna Stables is an accredited center with certified instructors and equine specialists on staff who provide individuals with a therapeutic equine riding program. The safe space program serves the community with compassion, uplifting inspiration, and above all else consistent selfless service. A location where families with a common bond can find support and acceptance. The program offers riders lessons which benefit in ways such as improved concentration, patience, and coping skills. Additionally, riders in the program have been shown to benefit physically,

emotionally, and socially. From improved confidence to self-esteem, balance and muscle tone, social skills with staff and others, riders have shown growth in many areas. Serving riders aged 4 - 48, the therapy regiment is founded on PATH International training protocols to meet the individual’s needs by identifying and fulfilling specific areas. Utilizing the protocols, certified instructors create games and exercises with the riders learning style in mind so they are able to progress to the best of their ability in the program. The stable works to maximize the potential of each rider by re-evaluating them throughout the program so goals can be updated to meet their fullest potential. The staff adaptive riding team at SoléAna Stables are also closely involved with the parents/caregivers, teachers, therapists, and school administrators

to set appropriate goals for each child because each are unique. “Our instructors, along with the support of our skilled volunteers and equine, encourage riders to safely try new things and attain new goals,” says Sasha founder of the stables. So, how can an adult with developmental disabilities in our area further learn or have a career with therapy involved? This was another conundrum that had someone dreaming. Meet Ann Henderson a woman who never owned a horse but saw a need in our community and dreamed a dream that became a reality as well. Seeing there was a distinct lack of opportunities and continued support for individuals with disabilities and their respective families Ann and her husband Jack started their research. It was noted, the majority of young adults with autism are able to enroll in public school programs to receive an education until the age of 22 but after they reach this age that is it, off to the real world. Not to long after Jack retired, so he and Ann went on the hunt for the perfect property in Rosharon, Texas to start building. With lots of hard work and help from many in the community they did just that and created Rainbow of Hope in 2020. The duo now has a ranch offering equine adaptive therapy to young adult individuals with developmental disabilities which helps them shape skills, develop confidence, and even possibly inspire their own dreams to pursue. Focusing on providing a routine relaxed farm work schedule with a peaceful environment, the stable allows individuals to comfortably adapt to the program and enhance the ability of problem-solving, responsibility, and work-social skills.

Trained staff are there side by side to get hands dirty too in the daily jobs of the “crew.” Proper handling and care for the horses is part of onboarding for these career focused individuals. Upkeep of stalls, feedings, and other maintenance is part of farm life so safety is a huge concern since the therapy involves animals. On Thursdays, the stable has Rainbow Day where students partake in activities designed by activity coordinator, Annette Owen to teach multiple job skills as well as life skills that may be of interest to possibly do in the future. Some skills participants can take part in are: puppy training, learning how to do canning of goods, making their own soaps and

candles, and even have the opportunity to work on an ice cream truck. Also, a big part of Rainbow of Hope is teaching how to give back. The last Wednesday of every month, everyone heads to the St. Thomas food pantry to volunteer from 10 am to 12 pm. As non-profits the organizations, SoleAna Stables and Rainbow of Hope are two amazing programs that are helping individuals with special needs and their families find proper learning environments, develop new skills, and meet goals in unique fun ways. MALIA THE MAGNIFICENT ONE YOUNG AUTHOR USES SPELLS TO BRING DREAMS TO LIFE

In 2018, an out-going, adventurous, and brave little girl with not only a huge smile but also heart finished writing her children's book. An amazing achievement for someone so young and inspiring that at such a young age she possessed skills even many adults do not. With the thought process at first that “only grown-ups did that” Malia Shaw continued to make up spells read about them until one day mom and dad helped make them come true. Her parents both entrepreneurs and passionate about trying new endeavors encouraged their daughter to write and take her dreams further.

WHAT MADE YOU WANT TO WRITE A BOOK? Honestly, it was a random idea I had. I really did not know that I could write a book because I thought only grown-ups did that. My parents are big into letting me try new things, so they encouraged and supported me the whole time.

HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH SUCH A BEAUTIFUL STORYLINE OF THE MAGICAL POWER OF BELIEF? During my time at summer camps, I would take a journal with me to pass the time and I would write down little spells that rhymed just for fun honestly. I was really into the movie series The Descendants at the time so that movie influenced me a lot.

DO YOU THINK YOUR PASSION FOR WRITING WILL LEAD YOU TO WRITE ANOTHER BOOK IN THE FUTURE? The older I am getting, the busier I seem to be which makes my mom laugh, but it is true. Sometimes it is hard for me to sit still and think of a topic for another book. I would really like to write another if I think of a great topic and I get the chance.

OK, BESIDES BEING AN AUTHOR WHAT DOES A KID LIKE YOU ENJOY DOING FOR FUN? I am really into writing of course, dancing, roller skating, and playing Roblox with my friends. We have a blast and laugh so much together. Doing this really helped during the pandemic.

WHO ARE YOUR FAVORITE AUTHORS/BOOKS?

My favorite books are hands down The Baby Sitters Club Series written by Ann M. Martin.

REALLY, THAT IS INTERESTING BECAUSE THEY HAVE BEEN OUT FOR A WHILE. WHO IS YOUR FAVORITE CHARACTER? Kristy for sure. I love her character honestly because she is bossy, independent, and smart. I would like to think I am a little like her but not so bossy.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE OTHERS ABOUT FOLLOWING THEIR DREAMS? The best advice is to just keep trying and never give up. When life gets hard or if you feel like you are not good just keep going. I thought I could not write a book but as you can see I did!

While many of us have health concerns, certain ones are not something simple to discuss with others and especially when it involves our children. As a board-certified Urologist and a mother, Dr. Angela Mittal understands the feel of anxiety when a parent is trying to understand what is occurring with their child when an issue arises. A sense of overwhelming urgency to have our babies be ok and be cared for properly is at the forefront of our thoughts. Early understanding and detection for our youth is key in their care. The staff at Pediatric Urology of Houston know these conversations are important and gone are the days where discussing these matters are taboo. “Families are starting to see more specialists,” Dr. Mittal says. “I’m providing care to families in a friendly and open environment that I would want for my own children and myself.” “Family and Pediatric physicians,” she says, “do not receive an extensive amount of training on urological health.” With great advances in health and medicine, an evolution of sub-specialties in specific fields are constantly being created. Urology is one of those sub-specialties which centrally focuses on the surgical and medical ailments of the genitourinary system and reproductive organs. Dr. Mittal strategically opened her office where it is easily accessible and close to the hospitals she is in partnership with locally.
