Summer is Here! Summer is the perfect time to come up with a bucket list of activities to enjoy and ways to unwind and relax. Some of the best summers spent are often not filled with constant activities and trips, but are those that reflect a slower pace and simple moments of enjoying those around us. Although the “lazy days of summer” isn’t always something we can attain with our packed schedules, it is so refreshing to take some time to slow down and enjoy some of the simple pleasures that remind us of our own childhoods. Some of the best times spent can be a backyard barbecue with friends, making s’mores by a fire pit, spending a day on the water, eating ice-cream on a hot summer day, or simply taking in the night sky with someone you love. In this issue, we wanted to share about some of the happenings around our city this summer and ways to get out and explore together. In addition, it is our privilege to shine a light on local veterans in our community and to thank them for their service in honor of the Fourth of July. We have an immense respect for the men and women who make the selfless decision to serve and protect our nation. There is no greater sacrifice than to risk your life in order to protect others. The team at Lifestyle wants to thank all veterans, those still serving and all of their loved ones for your service. I hope you are able to enjoy some of the many things our city offers during these hot days of summer and that you make memories with those around you that you love.

Jack “J” Taylor Appointed as New Pearland Fire Chief Following an extensive executive recruitment, the City of Pearland selected Jack “J” Taylor III as its next Pearland Fire Department Fire Chief. The appointment comes after a nationwide search following the announcement of Fire Chief Vance Riley’s retirement after 11 years of service to the Pearland community, effective end of April. The Fire Chief appointment is made by Pearland City Manager Clay Pearson with involvement and recommendation from a panel of City of Pearland employees; the appointment was confirmed by the Pearland City Council on Monday, April 11th.

From Military Police to Financial Advisor
Lessons Learned in the Military Carry Forward to Serving Clients

As a financial advisor for Edward Jones, Richard Lambert helps members of the Pearland community and surrounding plan for their future by setting and working towards financial goals. His passion and dedication shines through when assisting them financially to set aside for educational needs or retirement planning because Richard himself grew up around here in Angleton, TX. “This is my community and I want to help people succeed,” he says while telling stories of his younger years. Interestingly enough Richard's career did not start here despite his passion in his current role. He began his long career trek in the Army in the year 1982. He enlisted in the military and began to climb the ranks becoming a member of its' military police, Richard never would have imagined when being deployed to Beirut that the same week the United States Embassy would be attacked. His accelerated start went so fast that for him there was no stopping and he loved every moment of serving the people. Deciding to transfer to a German Nuclear Weapons site where he was in charge of reconstituting the defense systems, Richard began to sharpen his career and focus on a role to create a system to aide fellow service men and women with addiction issues. Shortly after, a transfer to Frankfurt, brought on a new challenge Richard was greatly appreciative of, designing a security system for the entire facility. This was an honor to be entrusted in such a detailed and important mission. Trust at such a level is one not easily given and Richard was aimed to not disappoint. Throughout his military career, he worked with a great many service men and women
including a few that went on to become 4 Star Generals or Regimental Commanders. He laughs and casually shrugs his shoulders when talking about having to be in charge of the protections of Generals and members of Congress. Despite working with some military greats, Mr. Lambert says, “I learned going into the military, there is no difference between anyone despite rank, race, or sex. Everyone is the same. They just need encouragement and opportunity to succeed.” Serving for twelve years and taking medical retirement in May of 1994, he went on to build an IT firm in California. It grew into a multimillion-dollar business which served clients in the medical and pharmaceutical industry, as well as government organizations. Selling the company in 2012, Mr. Lambert retired once again but only to be hired by AT&T to work on and design security systems yet again to protect more people. In 2016, Mr. Lambert joined Edward Jones and opened an office in Pearland where he continues his commitment to help but by building a secure future through sound financial investments. “I don’t want to see anyone retire without a cushion or live check to check.” Whether they have millions or as little as fifty dollars to invest, his philosophy of providing opportunity and encouragement to his clients carries forward from his military career. His experience has resulted in the loss of people who served beside Richard. With these losses in mind, Richard strives to make a difference in the lives of the people he serves. “Helping people is all I do and all I want to do.”

A Committed Enterprise HOW ACE HANDYMAN SERVICES HAS BUILT ITS CORE VALUES ON GROWTH AND RELIABILITY

The act of service, is a selfless commitment given to others. Many have this engrained in them early on and others learn it over time. It could happen as a possible fork in the road that may lead a person to a path in life dedicated to help. A second chance one can call it but most importantly what it is, is a chance of strength to make decisions that not only impact yourself but may inspire others along the way. Local Marine veteran and owner of Ace Handyman Services Luis Guerrero knows this service road, no pun intended, very well. Growing up in a small town in Texas and not having the latest and greatest, he still appreciated what he did have and that was being surrounded by loving and hardworking individuals dedicated to each other. When discussing family a smile spread across his face, while thinking back at fond memories going with his father to work, which happened to be an Ace Hardware and seeing the pride he had in his craft and appreciation for those he worked with. Even with that environment of support, Luis’s teenage years became a cloud of defiance and trouble making. Too many close calls finally led to an eye-opening conversation with an older family friend that gave a fatherly tough love speech and made him realize the path he was on was headed to nowhere at high velocity. Deciding to go big Luis joined the Marines for what became a 12-year career. “Looking back, I matured a lot, built bonds that to this day still exist and defined myself” states Luis. The unruly kid, gained experiences that humbled him greatly and taught what service, honor, respect, loyalty, and strength truly meant and also not to take life for granted.

Vowing to give back and continue to serve this country in a different form he dove into entrepreneurship opening his first Ace Handyman Services Office in 2021 to honor his father and nail his purpose to “be there for my community like mine was for me.” Providing a career path for fellow veterans and a diverse group of multi-talented craftsmen is rewarding and beyond words for the veteran when he sees how families and communities are positively affected by the opportunity. Opening his new Pearland location this year the need of a dedicated team development manager arose. Growing up he saw a business driven to cultivate a culture of diversity and personal growth and that tradition needed to be kept alive. When meeting Suzan Nguyen for the position he believed her focus aligned with his business value. At 22 years of age Suzan Nguyen had a car accident which left her with an amputated arm above the elbow. A moment which left her bitter and faced with many frustrations like having to retrain herself to use her nondominant arm to do many of life’s simple tasks and more. “Life wasn’t easy one bit.” In the midst of all this, Suzan was not taking care of herself but support poured in from her community of family, friends, and previous co-workers. Her rebellious, immature nature, and resentment led to a moment of emotional vulnerability and at that metaphorical fork in the road. Dedication and supportive advice helped her decide the path and to transform appreciating life in a whole new way. She went back to the books taking courses in leadership development and positive psychology. Personal growth that she developed for the ability to it pay forward and live by the motto, “be better not bitter.” Her dedication and empathetic nature to help others and impact many lives affected by roadblocks in their lives has led to multiple public speaking engagements such as TEDx. She founded the Be Better Group, became an author, and is the first Queened Mrs. Universal Empire, an international organization which awards women who have faced hardships with bravery and resilience. Although the duo took different paths in life, they both learned their reasons for living and serving compassionately. They are cementing a message about the value of trust, respect, and service excellence. Work sites and neighborhoods improve when, “businesses thrive because they are comprised of our coworkers and clients who are our neighbors and friends and all treated with commitment and care and respected as more than just a number.” Willingness to cultivate more community involvement past the business is the vision of success for Luis and Suzan as well as providing quality selfless service to keep a town moving forward.

Camp H-town Foundation is an Oncology camp providing children ages 8-14 who are living with cancer a safe and exciting unique sleep away camp environment for them and their families at no financial cost. Annually they collaborate with multiple Houston Restaurants, the Four Seasons Houston, and The University of Texas MD Anderson Children’s Cancer Hospital to raise money benefiting the families and providing awareness. This year’s celebration had an amazing collaboration of 16 celebrated Houston chefs and sold out an event that raised over $83,000. Food brings comfort, shared cultures, and ultimately connects strangers. Celebrity chefs from restaurants like Traveler’s Table, Guard and Grace, Uchi and more took this known fact teamed up to help local families have a fun staycation. “Bringing our community together for a night with these celebrated chefs to raise money for Camp H-Town is always such a special occasion,” states General Manager Tom Segesta of the Four Seasons Houston. The unique partnership Camp H-town has with the restaurants, MD Anderson, and Four Seasons brings back the joy of childhood to a population of children that do not always get to adventure.
The foundation provides a safer space to camp and explore while encouraging valuable friendships and connections with those they may have seen through the virtual camp program or at the hospital. Through built friendships exists a special support network many children need and lasts a lifetime. “This year more than ever, after shifting to virtual these past two years, everyone felt the importance of getting back together for real connection, refocusing, and raising money for Camp H-Town,” says Tom Segesta. The Four Seasons turns a whole dedicated floor in the hotel with 24/7 hospital staff or named the “camp counselors” into an urban campground. Rooms are cabins equipped with bunkbeds and tents for the families. Laughter is heard while smores are made around campfires, crafts created, scary stories told, and all minus the bugs and bears. Along with hotel activities campers and families visit surrounding attractions including a visit from the Houston Police and Fire Departments, a day at Lakewood Yacht Club, Prom Night at House of Blues, Astros night, and more. Grilled Corn Salad Yield: Serves 4-6
Ingredients • 2 ears corn, grilled and cut from the cob • 1 small shallot, thinly sliced into rings • 1/4 cup fresh feta or goat cheese, crumbled • 3 sprigs basil, leaves removed and torn • 1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil • 1 tablespoon red wine vinegar • Black pepper to taste • Jalapeño, thinly sliced (optional) Instructions • Place corn kernels into a bowl with the rest of the ingredients and stir to combine. • Taste, and re-season with salt, pepper, and vinegar to taste.
Steak with Chimichurri Sauce Yield: Makes about 1 cup Ingredients • 1 cup (packed) fresh Italian parsley • 1/2 cup olive oil • 1/3 cup red wine vinegar • 1/4 cup (packed) fresh cilantro (optional) • 2 garlic cloves, peeled • 3/4 teaspoon dried crushed red pepper • 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin • 1/2 teaspoon salt Steak • 1 ½-2 pounds flank steak, or steak of choice Instructions • Make sauce: Puree all ingredients in processor. Transfer to bowl. (Can be made 2 hours ahead. Cover and let stand at room temperature.) • Preheat grill to medium-high heat. Sear steak for 6-8 minutes on each side until heavily browned on the outside and slightly pink in the middle. • Thinly slice steak across the grain and top with Chimichurri sauce.
