JUNE IS NATIONAL MEN’S HEALTH MONTH

MEN’S HEALTH: SYMPTOMS NOT TO IGNORE ‘It’s nothing.” That’s the classic retort you hear when you suggest that the man in your life see a doctor for symptoms he’s having. But it could be something—something which could endanger his health and interfere with his quality of life. Minor complaints needn’t worsen, especially since many of the latest treatments at Memorial Hermann can be minimally or even noninvasive. So, here’s how to get him to see a physician for some common health complaints. FATIGUE, HEAVY SNORING Symptoms: He gasps, chokes or even stops breathing while dozing. Likely culprit: He may have obstructive sleep apnea, in which excess throat tissue blocks the airway, says Fernando Gomez-Rivera, MD, an assistant professor of surgery at McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston and ENT (otolaryngology) surgeon affiliated with Memorial Hermann Southeast Hospital. Sleep apnea deprives him of oxygen and may raise his risk of arrhythmias and difficult to control blood pressure. It also doubles his risk of stroke or heart attacks. Treatment options: “For sleep apnea, a Continuous Positive Air Pressure (CPAP) mask is the gold standard, but unfortunately there are a lot of issues with adherence to therapy and effectiveness due to multiple factors, frequently people find it uncomfortable and don’t use it,” Dr. Gomez-Rivera says. Dental devices or surgery can move the jaw or tongue forward to open the airway. Surgery can improve throat opening while sleeping and/or address nasal obstruction. As with many conditions, weight loss can make a big difference, in this case because that puts less pressure on the throat. Your doctor may recommend physical activity, healthy eating and portion control, with a weight-loss specialist’s support.

Adults with moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea and a body mass index (BMI) less than 35 may be eligible for Inspire, a device that’s like a pacemaker for the throat. During outpatient surgery, the doctor implants an Oreo®-sized battery in the upper chest. Turned on with a remote, Inspire sends a gentle electrical pulse to a nerve beneath the tongue with each breath. “That causes the tongue to stiffen and move forward,” Dr. Gomez-Rivera says. HEARTBURN Symptoms: He feels burning or pain in his chest after meals or at night, or is hoarse, or has a sour taste or trouble swallowing. Likely culprit: He may suffer from reflux, the upward surge of acid from the stomach via the esophagus to the throat, says Hoang Le, MD, general surgeon with Memorial Hermann Medical Group Southeast General Surgery. Habitual heartburn may be gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), which erodes and inflames the esophageal lining and can lead to Barrett’s esophagus, a condition which boosts cancer risk, Dr. Le says. “White men over 50—especially those with round bellies and who smoke or drink—are more vulnerable.” Treatment options: If he is under 50 and over-thecounter antacids don’t correct the symptoms, he may be prescribed acid-suppressing drugs called Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPIs). He’ll also be discouraged from having heavy evening meals.

symptomatic. Bravo stays attached for 4 days, then passes through the digestive tract. Reflux can be cut down by losing weight and stopping smoking and drinking. If not, he may need surgery to repair the valve (or sphincter) that serves as a flapping door between the esophagus and stomach. The operation, fundoplication, strengthens the flap by wrapping the top of the stomach around the lower esophagus. FREQUENT BATHROOM BREAKS Symptoms: He urinates urgently, slowly and with difficulty. Likely culprit: An enlarged prostate (benign prostate hyperplasia) can press upward on the bladder or curb urine flow by impeding the urinary tract as it moves through the prostate, says Angie Staller, MD, urologist with Memorial Hermann Medical Group Urology Associates Southeast. “Eventually the obstruction may lead to bladder dysfunction, inability to urinate and urinary tract infections. It also can progress to kidney (renal) failure,” Dr. Staller says. Treatment options: Medications can shrink the gland or relax the prostatic tissue, making it easier to urinate. Urologists can perform minimally invasive, inoffice procedures to ease the flow, Dr. Staller says. The UroLift® procedure inserts tiny implants to separate prostate lobes, which lessens pressure on the urethra.

If those measures don’t work, an upper endoscopy is performed which sends a narrow tube with a camera to the stomach and upper intestines to rule out ulcers or inflammation. “The gastroenterologist also can send down tools through the endoscope to seal bleeding vessels and do biopsies,” Dr. Le says.

Some treatments must be performed in the hospital. Aqua ablation uses a computer and high-pressured water, to destroy excess tissue while transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) uses heated electrodes or a laser to take out the central part of the prostate. Surgeons also can cut through the abdomen to do a simple prostatectomy, in which they remove the interior tissue of super-sized glands.

If he is over 50, the physician may do an endoscopy before prescribing medication. To confirm GERD, the doctor can do another procedure, in which a tiny acid- or pH-measuring probe (Bravo capsule) is attached to the lower esophagus. It comes with a monitor, whose buttons the patient presses when

testosterone. Erectile dysfunction may be an early sign of cardiovascular disease. Other causes of erectile dysfunction include diabetes, obesity, stress, depression. Patients with low libido and erectile dysfunction may be low in testosterone. Treatment options: “There are many effective and safe treatment options for men with erectile dysfunction” says Dr. Staller. First line treatment involves lifestyle changes, like diet and exercise. If that is not successful, there are several treatments such as medication and testosterone replacement. Urologists can even perform surgery in which a penile implant is placed which results in 90 percent to 95 percent satisfaction rating in patients and their partners. LARGE WAISTLINE Symptoms: He snores loudly, urinates often and has heartburn. Likely culprit: Obesity. His organs are surrounded by visceral fat and crammed into his tummy—and that’s bad news. “Obesity is a major killer because it’s linked to diabetes, cancer, cardiovascular and other grave diseases,” says Etakarina Elliott, DO, an assistant professor of surgery at McGovern

Medical School and bariatric surgeon affiliated with Memorial Hermann Southeast Hospital. “Yet men don’t address their weight till their pain and medical problems are unbearable.” Treatment options: According to Dr. Elliott, it’s important to increase physical activity to keep the weight off and improve heart and lung health but making changes to your diet is the key to losing weight. For eligible candidates, bariatric surgery can lead to faster and perpetual weight loss. The minimally invasive surgery resolves not just obesity, but also many of the above issues. Yet only 1 percent of those eligible get the operation. “And of those, just one of five are men,” Dr. Elliott says, “even though they need it as much as women do.” According to Dr. Elliott, gastric bypass creates a thumb-sized pouch from the top of the stomach and connects it to the small intestine. Gastric sleeve, also called sleeve gastrectomy, cuts down your stomach by 70 percent until it’s the size of a banana “People can eat very little, yet they feel full,” she says. “Once men lose the weight, their quality of life is so much better.”

MAINTENANCE Why it’s needed: “His body is more complex than his car, but just like it, he needs regular checkups and maintenance. Providing those visits is his primary care physician (PCP)”, says Rupali Kadakia, MD, a primary care physician with Memorial Hermann Medical Group. “You know if you don’t change the oil in your car, swap out the air filters or rotate the tires on a regular basis, you’re asking for a hefty repair bill, when your car breaks down,” she said. “The same is true with our bodies. If we wait until they start showing signs of a problem, we’re looking at a more serious problem than we would’ve had had we kept up with regular checkups.” Treatment options: He should have an annual physical at least yearly to measure blood pressure, height and weight, cholesterol, blood sugar and other key body metrics. His doctor may urge other tests or health screenings, based on his family or personal health history. It’s never too late to rev up for better health. Regular tune-ups will spare him from major mishaps down the road. “We can certainly treat you when you are sick, but our bigger goal is to prevent disease in the first place,” says Dr. Kadakia.

Whether it was someone pushing us to be a better version of ourselves, or someone who sees the best in us, or someone we look up to for guidance, or perhaps someone we don’t personally know but that inspires us by their greatness, we can recognize the impact these role models can make our lives. This month we are honoring men and their contribution to the betterment of our community. We are highlighting men who put themselves second, work hard and inspire others to do the same. How do rising interest rates affect the Real Estate market?

"The most common question I have been asked recently is, "Dwight, is it really the best time to sell/buy?" Fannie Mae economists are forecasting a 9.7 percent decline in home sales next year due to the "lock-in effect". A homeowner with a current mortgage at 3% interest for 30 years is not likely to give that up for a mortgage at a rate closer to 5% or more. E1 Motorsports was founded in 2013 by myself & Aadel Khan. Our aftermarket parts business was built from our passion for car customization and going fast. It was also our side hustle. Initially, the company was known as Elite Customs & Performance. For the first few years, we focused on selling aftermarket parts to enthusiasts across the United States via automotive online forums such as Audizine and Facebook Groups. As our success continued, we decided to launch an online store and local shop. We worked on developing a new brand identity that would support both our national and local auto communities, as well as locate a perfect spot to focus our European vehicle aftermarket customization and repair facility. In November 2017, we rebranded to Enthusiasts First “E1” Motorsports and opened our first location at 610 & Yale in the Heights neighborhood of Houston.

Having a passion for what you do brings joy to your life that only doing something you love can do. As my children have seen their entire life, loving what you do is only a piece of the pie. It requires a lot of dedication and scrappiness to achieve business success.

HOW DO YOU DISCONNECT FROM YOUR BUSINESS AND MAINTAIN A BALANCED LIFE? We built a team that we trust. When we are gone, they can handle business to an expectation that we, as owners, expect, and our customers know us for delivering.

WHAT’S SOMETHING YOU HAVE RECENTLY LEARNED THAT SURPRISED YOU? My limit. The more I push myself, the further I can go. Recently, my wife Colleen and I ran our first half marathon. Only three days before the run, I had canceled my registration. I told myself I was not prepared and had been too busy. Honestly, it was just an excuse. The morning of the half marathon, I got up and dressed. Colleen, my in-laws, the kids, and I walked her down to the starting line. With only a few minutes remaining, I looked over to Colleen and told her I would run the first 4-5 miles and then meet up with my in-laws and kids. Well, 13.1 miles, 2 hours, and 43 minutes later, Colleen and I crossed the finish line. Once I get my head in the right place, I have never been able to not achieve a goal or task I set out to do. WHAT IS ONE DIFFERENCE ABOUT GROWING UP TODAY THAN WHEN YOU WERE A CHILD? Access to smart phones, there is way more information available, more opportunities, and simply more awareness now to everything as compared to when I was a child.

IT IS DAD MONTH AND YOU ARE ONE. WHAT ADVICE DO YOU GIVE NEW DADS? To always remember for any child, dad is their superhero. Being a dad is special and I believe one should cherish every moment they have as a parent.

HOW DO YOU DISCONNECT FROM YOUR BUSINESS AND MAINTAIN A BALANCED LIFE? We love having family outings and enjoy watching movies or tv shows together. We even enjoy being in the kitchen cooking and eating together at a table which many families unfortunately do not always get to do. Connecting to talk about our day, emotions, or events is important. Shopping, doing household work together, car cleaning, and house repairs are a must for everyone to take part in as well. I believe in doing so we are building our character and true appreciation of what one has.

WHAT’S SOMETHING YOU’VE RECENTLY LEARNED THAT SURPRISED YOU? I recently learned that kids grow up faster than we think. My daughter is able to give me wise advice on people and how to deal with them. Funny to think of a child giving an adult this type advice.

DO YOU HAVE ANY ADVICE FOR YOUNG ADULTS? No matter when you become an adult, you are always a baby for your parents. Many find it hard to understand until they become parents themselves.

R OY C A S T I L LO HOW DO YOU DISCONNECT FROM YOUR BUSINESS AND MAINTAIN A BALANCED LIFE? It’s tough considering what I do and what I did for 26 years as a Pearland Police Officer. These jobs are 24/7 type occupations and you deal with some stressful situations and a lot of times, despite your best intentions you take some of that home. Luckily my wife, Virginia, is really patient with me. She can tell when things have not gone well and without shutting me out, she gives me some distance to decompress. It is good knowing at the end of your shift, no matter how it is gone, she is there to help me decompress, be thankful, and enjoy our time together. I also count on my bible study guys, and my dear friends Cathy Garcia, Lizeth Sitta, and Greg Hill. It is good to have people around who listen and do not judge. They know when I want advice and when I want to vent. I owe each of them a great deal. Also, a ride on my horse or a tractor with grass to mow, Texas country in the ears while I’m not thinking about anything at all, just enjoying the moment helps.

WHAT IS DIFFERENT ABOUT GROWING UP TODAY THAN WHEN YOU WERE A CHILD? Growing up in Pearland in the early seventies was fun. You knew everyone in town and they knew you. We had some great leaders and small business owners who were fine examples of hard workers, being polite, use ones manners, and always do your best. The same values of faith, family, and freedom my dad still talks about today. But I welcome the growth and the way our city leaders have managed it and their vision of a fast-growing city with a small-town feel. I like being able to go to movies, to fine restaurants, and having quality health care in my town. We have been blessed here, and you can now be

born in Pearland, graduate from Pearland, go to college in Pearland, and earn graduate degrees in Pearland. One hell of a vision.

IT’S DAD MONTH AND YOU ARE A DAD TO ADULTS. WHAT TIPS DO YOU HAVE FOR NEW DADS AND DADS TO LITTLES? I like the way my dad raised me and I try not to veer too far off that path. Be a father early, set those examples, communicate the expectations, and let them know early and often what is not acceptable as soon as you see it. It is important they know to do the right thing, do it the right way, do it right all the time, and let people know you care. As that relationship matures, dad starts to hang out more as a buddy. My son Dominick and my daughter Danielle are hardworking

homeowners with bright careers ahead of them. Not going to lie, it is nice visiting their homes now, eating their food, leaving the dishes on the counter, glasses right beside coasters and dirty clothes on the floor. I LOVE the payback!

WHAT KEEPS YOUR HIGH SCHOOL SWEETHEART MARRIAGE SPARK ALIVE? Virginia lets me be me, she always has, and to this day still puts up with me. I am what they call a difficult and complicated man to love, but I thank God she does with her whole heart. She is the most patient, kind soul I have ever met. I am just glad I found a woman like her, who is great looking, smart, a friendly personality, and with very bad eyesight and poor judgment to keep a guy like me.

How a son’s love for his father builds a community

The moment you enter Watercrest at Shadow Creek Ranch, it feels like coming home. Warm smiles and the smell of a homemade meal wraps around you. Venturing a little further, you notice a well-stocked library, lists of interesting activity choices, as well as a business center with computers and comfortable sitting areas to meet with friends. Not to mention a dining room with a gorgeous chandelier and huge fireplace overlooking a beautiful courtyard and fountain! The amazing part is that this is all within 100 feet of the entrance. Tucked away throughout the complex are also an indoor heated swimming pool, games rooms, a salon, and fitness areas! The executive director setting the tone for this resortlike senior living community is Desmond Hendricks. When meeting Mr. Hendricks, one quickly realizes that his heart for the residents at Watercrest is as big as the community! Interestingly, Mr. Hendricks has not always been in this industry. His career began in a completely unrelated field, however, life sometimes leads you down an unexpected path that you discover you were meant to follow. Discovering his path when faced with finding a residential facility for his father who had been diagnosed with dementia. Desmond quickly discovered that senior residences could typically be categorized in one of two ways – apartment style with little to no amenities or all-inclusive. Options for seniors who needed or desired something in the middle were lacking. With his mother’s help, Desmond advocated and cared for his father and was with him as he received care. Through his father’s journey, Desmond discovered that he wanted

to use this experience to help other seniors. He made the decision to change careers so he could follow this path that he felt God was leading him down. Having no experience in this area, Desmond decided to take an Assisted Living Manager Course to learn the business side of the industry. After his father passed, Desmond began looking for residential options once more, this time for his mother. After his struggle to find a perfect option to meet his father’s needs, Desmond and his mother discovered Watercrest in Katy and found it to be a perfect fit. His mother has now happily resided there for over five years. Interestingly enough Watercrest ended up not only being a perfect fit for his mother, but for Desmond as well. He was hired as assistant manager of the community. Eventually, he advanced to the executive director position at Watercrest at Shadow Creek Ranch where he has built not just a community but a family. As we walked around the complex, the feeling of belonging and community was overwhelming. On several instances, Mr. Hendricks stopped to chat with residents as we toured. At times it was a quick conversation about how a resident’s week was going, others a conversation about all the additions to the community garden as well as what would be added next. Sprinkled throughout the visits were good natured jokes and comments that tend to be a part of conversations between friends and family. When asked about his approach to creating this sense of community, Mr. Hendricks said, “All the experiences I have had, led me here. From my heart, I do whatever I can to assist the residents here. My goal…quality of life.”

Watercrest is a community that welcomes. It falls into a category that fits in between the apartment style option and the all-inclusive one. Residents have a base level of amenities included and depending on what they desire, they can add on services to create their ideal living situation.

Base services include amenities such as Continental Breakfast, monthly housekeeping, scheduled transportation, valet trash services, full time concierge, a heated and covered swimming pool, engaging activities, social opportunities and more!

Watercrest has over 100 different clubs and groups that residents can be a part of and that is just the official ones! Residents are amazing about creating their own unofficial groups as well when they see a need or an interest arises. A perfect example of this is the recycling club as well as the woodworking group. Daily opportunities for groups to meet and work on crafts, play games, exercise, garden or join in events like prayer groups or ice cream socials are offered. Recently, residents enjoyed a Black-Tie Gala as well as a concert by the group The Old Geezers. Additionally, residents get together on the weekends for potlucks and BBQ. They can also be found volunteering for the fire department or organizing the community garden. If they would like to venture out of Watercrest for some fun, opportunities such as a visit to Peeka Ranch to see the alpacas or have dinner at Texas Roadhouse are available.

| What if there comes a time where a resident needs more support?

Watercrest has a tiered support system in place. Programs in place for residents, should they need them, are wellness checks as well as transitional programs with more support for meals and activities. For residents needing more assistance, Watercrest offers Memory Care as well as Assisted living.
