Spring symbolizes new beginnings. Nature reveals it’s beauty through budding trees and flowers, and the fresh temperate air invites us to spend more time outdoors. As we prepare our garden and flowerbeds, new life awakens joy in the beauty of our world and the desire to explore it. And for those of us without a green thumb, the local farmer’s markets are gearing up for a busy season of visitors to enjoy fresh produce from local farmers. There are a multitude of diverse spots around town to discover, whether it is a new restaurant with a great patio to enjoy with friends and family, a hiking trail to take in nature and the surrounding scenery or a niche boutique hotel for a relaxing staycation—there is something for everyone. For our April issue, we wanted to share with you how some of our neighbors are getting out to explore both locally and globally. It is a whole new world out there. Gone are the days when “striking it rich” required a fancy degree, seed money, and the right connections. In 2022, you can bypass the traditional path to success and attain money and fame by playing videogames, by trading cryptocurrency, or by “going viral” on social media as an influencer and/or content creator. The real fortunes, though, are made in the underlying code used to create those videogames, apps, and social media platforms. There is just one catch: learning to code is easier said than done. While the demand for programming proficiency may be high, the supply of quality coding courses has been underwhelming. Unfortunately, public schools are seldom able to meet this need due to budget constraints and a lack of skilled instructors. At best, such classes are only offered as electives at the high school level. “I grew up going to public school and during that time it was a great school district but when I went to college, I felt my school system didn’t prepare me enough for what we truly needed to know for our future careers,” laments Fazan CONTINUED >

Askari, co-owner of Smart Core Labs. In response, Smart Core Labs has created a curriculum of more than 25 courses carefully designed to instill the fundamentals of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) in students from kindergarten through early adulthood. An introduction to basics in STEAM helps children develop critical troubleshooting skills that they may not get exposed to otherwise. “Our purpose is to have this easily accessible to all children from a young age,” says Mr. Askari. It is not enough, however, to just watch or learn these concepts theoretically, practical application is key to discovering how the technology works and its importance in our daily lives. Smart Core Labs encourages students to think outside-the-books so as to improve social, motor, visual, emotional, and problem-solving skills. The courses focus on an array of modern competencies beyond text-based coding languages such as Python and Java. In courses called Scratch and Java Minecraft, for example, students can create their own customized games which introduces them to programming in a way that harnesses the fun of playing video games. Through this experience, students readily absorb the instructional education they are receiving because they can appreciate how these skills can be applied to a career in the real world. The early adoption of programming concepts allows a child to expand their understanding and interest in areas that would otherwise go untapped. The need for a technical education has not gone unnoticed and specialized schools have emerged as a result, but most are privately owned with high associated fees and overcrowded classes. Smart Core Labs breaks from this approach by capping class sizes at 15 so as to provide a more individualized learning experience. The personal nature of these settings comes with added benefits. “If a child needs to move ahead, we can definitely introduce them to a higher level or even change their area of focus if they are interested and see how it goes. This is easy to do because of our class sizes,” boasts Mr. Askari. Along with their after-school programs, Smart Core Labs has been coordinating with local school districts to develop a non-profit Smart Core Labs foundation which will provide in-school and after-school STEAM courses at no cost to local school districts. Much like art, the value in each bottle is unique to the individual experiencing it based on their senses, emotions, and memories. Carlos appreciates that his customers often have a story associated with a particular label. He has heard many stories of people scouring shelves looking for a brand they had years ago and have not been able to find since. Some stories are more heartfelt, “[a] gentleman came in one day and told me he wanted a good brand to have for his son returning home from military duty. They were going to open it together and he mentions Antique Weller 104 a rare bottle which I happened to have. Latin Citrus Chicken Pinchos

Servings: Depends on your appetite

Ingredients: • 2 pounds boneless skinless chicken breast • 1 tablespoon Goya Adobo Seasoning • 1 packet Goya Sazon seasoning • 1 tablespoon avocado oil • 1 pinch of salt or pepper • 1 tablespoon orange juice • 2 tablespoons minced garlic • 1 tablespoon oregano • 1 teaspoon garlic powder • 1 stick melted butter • 1 whole orange and a lime

SUMMER IS COMING SO GO LIGHT UP THE GRILL. FIRST UP A JUICY AND FLAVORFUL ISLAND DISH.

Directions: Cut chicken into 1-inch cube pieces and place into a large mixing bowl. Add adobo, sazon, oil, salt and pepper, oregano, orange juice, and minced garlic. Mix well until all chicken pieces are covered. Place a lid or plastic wrap on container and marinate in fridge for 2-3 hours, overnight has better results. Soak skewers if wooden in water for 1hr prior to grilling. Remove chicken from fridge and skewer your desired amount. Turn grill on to medium heat. Slice orange and lime into quarters. Dash with some salt and grill until fine marks appear. Remove and let cool. In a small bowl melt butter and garlic powder. Add skewers to the grill for about 10 minutes rotating at every 3 and basting immediately with mixture. Remove from heat, squeeze the fruit over the skewers, and serve.

Pairs well with a chimichurri dip or your favorite BBQ sauce. Garlic or cilantro lime rice or tortillas. With BBQ side dishes or even fresh off the grill and with a cold drink of choice.
