LIFESTYLE LETTER
Are you ready to March into Spring? Home. It is meant to be a place of retreat, rest, love, and a shelter from the outside world—a place where you can let your guard down and just be. Some homes feel just like that, and some can be filled with conflict and strife. It is never too late to change the climate of our homes. In a world that can be cruel, let the home be a place where we build each other up. Make a continual effort to teach with love, correct with love, and express love everyday. Take time to enjoy all the small moments with family instead of getting caught up in all the daily tasks that can steal our attention away—to be truly present when spending time with our family instead of dividing our attention with our technology or to-do list. Although we usually aren’t perfect at accomplishing these things, it is worthwhile to strive for it everyday. March is our Home and Design issue. Creating a home that you want to spend all of your time in isn’t easy. The memories that are made within the walls of our home are what lasts regardless if our home has the latest trends or if it hasn’t been updated in years. While it is fun to look at beautiful homes and dream about renovations, we all know that the love we share in our homes is truly what matters most. In this year’s Home issue, we take a peek inside some local homes that boast beautiful designs that I hope will leave you inspired. From our home to yours, we wish you love, peace and happiness.

Vineyard, a senior living community opening in Pearland later this year, will welcome their future residents with a small housewarming gift. They walk us through how to transform a simple planter into a custom work of art using easily sourced supplies.
LIFE GROWS ON Vineyard Senior Living is committed to growing purposeful communities that make a positive impact on both people and our planet. Through specially designed workshops, programs, and activities, residents stay connected with the local community and continue on their path to personal growth. Vineyard Gives, for example, is a program which provides opportunities for residents to participate in community and global causes they care about. The Life, Your Way lifestyle assessment is done to learn personal passions and preferences to pair residents with the right people and places to continue their drive.
PLANTING SEEDS Every resident’s journey at Vineyard begins with a planter, soil, and seeds… all the ingredients necessary to create a new life and begin to set roots in a new environment. Gardening has long been a popular therapeutic activity and a proven means of improving memory, cognitive abilities, and muscle strength. Once the seedling has sprouted, it becomes a part of a community garden which the residents and staff will all care for and appreciate together.

Supplies • Cake pan 9in • Clear Epoxy glue • Clear plastic zipper envelope • Dry erase marker • Moss • Hanging plant • Double-sided adhesive wall strips • Scissors • Spray Paint • Painter’s tape (optional)
Spray paint the cake pan in the color desired. Consider a dual color scheme where the outside closely matches the color of the wall and a contrasting color on the inside to create a 3D look. Allow for proper drying time.
S T E P
Step 1
Step 3
Flip the cake pan over right side up. Apply a thin line of the clear epoxy glue on the circumferential edge of the semicircle and flip it onto the cake pan so as to be flush with the outer edge of the cake pan. Run your finger around the edge pressing down slightly to ensure a proper seal. Allow for proper drying time.
Step 4
Place moss in the pocket created. Then stick the hanging foliage of choice into the moss. Hang your new wall planter on the wall using double-sided adhesive strips.
Step 5
Finally sit back and enjoy your creation.

Spring Break
Bucket List
Must do experiences anyone of any age should try The spring is upon us and all that comes with it. We will have warmer weather, the birds will be chirping, and the flowers will be blooming. For those of us with school-aged kids, this also means a spring break week in which the kids will be home with nothing to do. As parents we want them to have fun but would rather they did not spend the whole week eating pizza and playing video games. Escape the monotony and spice things up this month with one of these novel experiences. From the stage to the shore, here are a few exciting and educational activities to cover fun for ages 4 and up.
1.
Main Street Theater From February 22nd to March 18th Mainstreet Theater offers excitement for children ages and up. The cast ensures giggles and wiggles when they bring our beloved stories Pete the Cat and Dragons Love Tacos, to life in musical form. The whole family will get to know the hilarious and jazzy antics of each character and even feel part of the show. Have kids that are a little older, Charlotte’s Web and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang are showing in April.

Moonstruck Drive-in
Buffalo Bayou
Artist Boat
Gather up all the cozy blankets, snacks, and pop open the tailgate to watch a movie under the stars at the drive-in theater. Bring a camera and take a quick flash, before the movie of course, for a captured memory of a classic family favorite pastime. Movie showings are Thursday-Sunday evenings. The drive-in also offers private events for special events and private screenings, which is a great idea for summer birthday parties.
Have dinner in the city and then go check out the Mexican Free-tailed bats living at the Waugh Bridge. Living under the bridge year-round and emerging at dusk, the thousands of bat take flight in search of food. It is a myth that bats will suck your blood or get caught in your hair so have no fear. Get some glow sticks and take your kids to go watch them fly. If they enjoy it a ton there are evening guided Buffalo Bayou boat tours that start up in the summer so they can get an even closer look.
Rent a kayak and take in a serene coastal experience paddling for 3-4hrs at one of the multiple locations on the gulf coast. A guide takes paddlers down the coast educating them on the wildlife found at these locations. Bring a waterproof camera and snap away at the magenta feathers of the spoonbills, the exotic sea blue pincer of the fiddler crab, and the lightning welk, which is only found on the gulf coast. Eco art camps are also open to all ages and registration is on their website.

PEARLAND NATIVE AND HSPVA ALUM OLLY SHOLOTAN STARS AS CARLTON IN THE REBOOT OF ‘FRESH PRINCE OF BEL-AIR’
CONTINUED > MAR CH 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM / P E A R L A N D

It’s been 31 years since The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air first aired, launching Will Smith’s acting career and putting the “Carlton Dance” on our pop culture radar. The show, which was a mega hit on NBC for six seasons has now been rebooted as titled Bel-Air starring Houston’s own Olly Sholotan, who is reprising the role of Carlton Banks. Although Sholotan always knew he wanted to be in front of the camera, music was his first love. “I grew up in Nigeria until I was ten years old, and I wanted to be a musician. I listened to Michael Jackson and Motown records all the time,” says Sholotan. “My family had one Michael Jackson CD that I listened to constantly.” Fast forward several years, and Sholotan, who is still a musician at heart, is also a graduate of Kinder High School for the Performing and Visual Arts (HSPVA) and the UCLA School of Theater, Film, and Television. Although Bel-Air is his television debut, he is also a producer, songwriter, and performer who has starred in two movies. Sholotan first started thinking about Bel-Air when Morgan Cooper, a Fresh Prince superfan, created a YouTube trailer for a new darker version of the show, which went viral. He then learned Will Smith was on board as an Executive Producer for a reboot based on the viral video and called his management team to get him an audition. “I never thought I would be cast as one of the main characters, but I knew I wanted

to be on the series even if it was just a recurring role as a pizza delivery guy,” says the actor who currently lives in Los Angeles. “I auditioned, got a callback, did a couple of chemistry reads, and found out I got the part. It was one of the coolest experiences of my life.” From all accounts, Bel-Air is a very different version of the original sitcom. Although all the original characters are represented, the youth-ful pop energy is replaced by a much darker and grittier take on their different points of view. “I can’t emphasize it enough, this is a completely different show. It is a tear-jerker, and we touch on some heavy subjects,” says Sholotan. “The original sitcom was from the point of view of Will Smith’s character. This version is as if you went into each character’s diary, but it definitely builds upon the legacy that we have been given.” Bel-Air, cast entirely over Zoom in the middle of the pandemic, made its streaming debut on Peacock on Feb 13, 2022. It has already been picked up for two seasons, giving audiences a chance to fall in love with the new characters just like they did with the original show. “We have some big shoes to fill, but I think that everyone in the cast is genuinely very close, and we all support each other in our roles. We are standing on the shoulders of giants, and we can either let that intimidate us or motivate us. It is an honor to take the reins from such great performers, and I am so excited to hear what people think.”

CITY LIFESTYLE: SHARE WITH US YOUR BACKGROUND AND THE INFLUENCE IT HAD ON YOUR JOURNEY TO WHERE YOU ARE TODAY. DAPHNE OZ : I was born in Philly, raised in New Jersey, and now
my husband and our four kids and I live in Florida. I spend a few days each week working in NYC taping our new syndicated talk show, The Good Dish, covering everything delicious in daytime which is a dream job for an eater by nature, by calling and by choice—like I am.
CL: WHAT ARE YOUR TIPS FOR HOSTING A MEMORABLE DINNER PARTY AT HOME? DO: When I entertain, my general approach is: Abundant Simplicity.
Appetizers are generous piles of a few different things – olives, hunks of parmesan, spiced nuts, torn bread with herby oil to dunk in, sliced Persian cucumbers with a pool of labne or Greek yogurt, olive oil, and flaky salt for dipping. I look for recipes that are simple or that I’ve made 100 times before that are always crowd pleasers and leave me plenty of time to enjoy my company. The whole point of a beautiful evening together is to make sure you, the host, are relaxed and comfortable, because your guests will take their cue from you.
