Art comes in many different forms, and it gives us a glimpse of someone’s heart—a part of them we don’t see on the surface. We are all drawn to various expressions of art in different ways, and we tend to appreciate artistic expression that makes us feel something and that resonates with us. I have always admired the vast creativity that artisans of all kinds pour into their craftsmanship. Our February issue is dedicated to sharing about local products, makers and artists in our area. As you read about a few local artisans in our community and their stories of passion and self-expression, we hope you are inspired to pursue what you love. After all, February is the month of love. With the hectic schedules we often keep, it is easy to let our hobbies, talents and special interests fall by the wayside. We just have to be deliberate about allowing ourselves time to pour into interests that we love and that fill us up. So, while you fill your home with chocolates, flowers and valentines (and perhaps college basketball) this month, remember to give yourself some time to do what you love. Find what makes you feel alive, and don’t forget to share it with us. And while you are at it, don’t forget to shop local and support our local makers and artists right here in our community.

“There is always something going on here close to daily. We always have events happening to bring people together from nonprofits like the Pearland Animal Shelter to the Pearland Neighborhood Center.” Pearland’s first craft brewery will be celebrating its sixth year in operation next month. Nestled on the border with Friendswood, Bakfish Brewing Company began as the brain-child of Kris Szecsy [SAY-chee] and Brian Allen when they were making their own brews in college as a fun way to save on beer money. Seizing on the growing popularity of micro-breweries across the country, Kris utilizes his previous experience as a chemist in oil and gas for his brewing process while Brian’s talents in business development got the commercial process going. The two coined the name Bakfish by combining their initials along with a nod to Kris’s past career as a marine biologist. What started out with five beers on tap now boasts seven core draft choices along with several seasonal suds. Bakfish gained fast fame and enjoys a huge following. “The brewery’s pub-like atmosphere allows us to keep experimenting and also the patrons excited on what is next.” says Kris. As the brewery has developed into a popular hotspot, Kris has devoted himself to the beer and features local food trucks to feed the crowds. Bakfish has also hosted a wide variety of family-friendly community events, fundraisers, clubs, and private parties over the years where new friendships have been forged. “There is always something going on here close to daily. We always have events happening to bring people together from nonprofits like the Pearland Animal Shelter to the Pearland Neighborhood Center.” CONTINUED > FEB R UARY 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . ABOUT THE BREWERY
“Bakfish leverages its unique menu and large footprint with ample indoor and outdoor floorspace to offer the community a place to come and socialize safely among family and friends.” When times got tough this brew master got crafty. In the midst of pandemic-induced business closures, Kris was determined to find a way to keep the doors to Bakfish open. As a result of COVID lockdown ordinances which forced bars to shut indefinitely, Kris added non-alcoholic beverages and food items to his menu so that his establishment would be deemed a restaurant as opposed to just a bar. Thankful for the support Bakfish has received over the years, Kris was committed to providing his patrons with a safe place to gather and continue to foster the sense of community that this watering hole is known for. To that effect, Bakfish now offers an assortment of locally sourced pretzels, and hummus platters which pair nicely with the draft beers brewed on-site. Bakfish has also been opening early since Kris expanded his beverage selection to include freshly roasted globally inspired coffee that he brews daily and serves with local bakery desserts. The idea came to Kris when he noticed his staff liked to stay caffeinated while on duty, “it’s fun and an experience doing this.” The new operating hours have expanded Bakfish’s customer base to include new demographics. “Runners' club meet on Tuesday nights here to run a 5k and then have a beer afterwards to talk and relax. Parents with toddlers on Friday mornings have a coffee or latte and a dessert while their kids play in the yard.” They even have a regular Home Brew Meet Up for those looking to start a new hobby and a trivia night to test your bar knowledge. Newly announced is the addition of a portable stage under the covered patio to showcase live music from local talent. The proprietor of this establishment has been innovative in overcoming the obstacles presented by the pandemic. Bakfish leverages its unique menu and large footprint with ample indoor and outdoor floorspace to offer the community a place to come and socialize safely among family and friends. “We simply want to have a family friendly place to meet people and have a great experience.”

THE P OW E R OF L OV E HOW STRENGTH AND COMMITMENT IMPROVE NOT ONLY EACH OTHER BUT ALSO THEIR COMMUNITY
ARTICLE BY JOANNA SANCHEZ PHOTOGRAPHY BY CHRISTY WHITE & MORGAN JONES-OSBORNE
Most of us consume ourselves with finding the right balance between our work-life and our home-life that finding the time to give back to the community falls off our list of priorities. Finding new ways to keep the flame alive with our partner as we push to reach our career goals while striving to be a force for good in our society can feel like a lot to put on our plate. Some local heroes among us are inspired to join the neighborhood watch or coach youth sports, others donate blood or contribute to their local church, and some may even mentor troubled youth or volunteer at a soup kitchen in our spare time. Then there are others who fully embrace the challenge and turn the task into a figurative and literal labor of love. These three power couples have consistently approached their community activism with the same respect, passion, and commitment as they do with their business and marriage. By leveraging their entrepreneurship to champion their causes and cultivate their bond in the process, they have established themselves as pillars of our community.

MEET THE HEHN’S
What is your favorite memory together? The births of each one of our children. Each was so special and unique. What is your favorite trait/quality about your partner? Lorraine’s unequivocal and unwavering daily support in every aspect of my life: spiritual, professional, emotial, mental and physical. Derek’s passion for individual people and humanity as a whole. He always seems to want the best of people and communities. What advice would you give to other couples? Do not let unresolved issues fester. Once you can calmly talk through things, work them out sooner rather than later. Seek professional counseling if you can not find resolution. What is your favorite Pearland restaurant for date night? Killen’s Steakhouse Derek and Lorraine Hehn met in college while taking an English composition course. Twenty-five years later, they have turned their passion for the Houston Texans and Pearl Jam into an excuse to travel and explore regions of the country that they would not have otherwise. As an example, when the Texans travel to Pittsburgh to play the Steelers, the Hehn’s may spend the rest of the afternoon enjoying the views from the Roberto Clemente bridge or dining at the Primanti Brothers Bar & Grill. Back at home, the Hehn’s own a mortgage company that they leverage to assist local veterans, first responders, and educators get into a home when others have turned them down. The Hehn’s strongly believe helping these heroes set roots benefits those individuals, their families, and our community as a whole. Derek and Lorraine’s dedication to giving back extends beyond their business dealings. For several years they have organized charitable drives to deliver meals and gift cards from neighbors and local businesses to the Manvel Police Department on holidays. This past year the couple co-hosted a wildly successful toy drive. As if that were not enough, the Hehn’s have collaborated with Pup Squad Rescue Group for over fifteen years to foster dozens of abused and abandoned newborn puppies and their mothers.

MEET THE B A R RY ’ S What is your favorite memory together? There are so many, but it would have to be our various family vacations. Spending time with family, continuing to build those relationships is very important to us. What is your favorite trait/quality about your partner? Our independence. Even though we are married and work together we still find time to enjoy our own interests/hobbies. What advice would you give to other couples? Christ, Family, Job. In that order. Family and job are the hardest to balance. Jobs come and go but your family will always be there when the dust settles. What is your favorite Pearland restaurant for date night? Killen’s Steakhouse After meeting while attending college, Jeff and Charisse Barry celebrate over twenty years of marriage by making their time together a priority. Whether it is spending time with loved ones, exercising together, adventuring outdoors, or visiting historical landmarks around the country, these nature lovers have been marking numerous historical towns and national parks off their bucket list. Jeff, a navy veteran, spent his first ten years after college cutting his teeth in sales and engineering management. Having grown weary of life in the corporate world, he decided to go into the family insurance and financial consulting business now in its fourth generation. In their private lives, Jeff and Charisse are huge advocates for public education. Jeff acknowledges, “education is fundamental to everything we do and if we don’t give kids a proper education, we are doing a disservice for our country.” This conviction in the value of an education is why Jeff serves on the Pearland ISD Board of Trustees, he is the President of the Pearland ISD Education Foundation, and is a member of Northern Brazoria Education Alliance. The Barry’s are members of Pearland Chamber of Commerce, Pearland Economic Development Corp., Houston Pipeliner’s Association, and the Pearland Silverlake Lion’s Club in which Jeff is part of the Leader Dog program which trains dogs to guide the disabled and visually impaired.

MEET THE TENNISON’S What is your favorite memory together? (Markeith) Memories together with my wife happen often. Whether at home or on vacation, time spent with my wife is most important. Whether we are having a deep discussion, spending quality time, or simply sitting in each other presence is memorable. (Natasha) One of my favorite memories with Keith was when we spontaneously decided to pull over to ride on the Aquarium Downtown Ferris wheel when it was 30 degrees outside! It was cold and fun. What is your favorite trait/quality about your partner? Her love, compassion, and nurturing spirit. She is always willing to approach every person or situation with love and care. My favorite trait/quality about Keith is his willpower to continually work to make things better in our marriage. What advice would you give to other couples? Communication is key. Speak what’s on your heart (respectfully), love selflessly, and listen to understand each other’s wants and needs. Be honest, fair, and open to seeing things outside of yourself. What is your favorite Pearland restaurant for date night? Killen Steakhouse and Grazia’s Italian Kitchen. We also love to frequent Fish City Grill in the Pearland Town Center for a nice outdoor lunch date. Markeith and Natasha Tennison did not realize they had so much in common ten years ago. Although the two grew up in the same neighborhood and attended the same high school, it took a gathering with mutual friends after college to finally notice each other. In the process of getting to know each other and discussing their individual goals and aspirations, Markeith and Natasha soon discovered they shared a genuine interest in uplifting and inspiring others to reach their full potential. As the Tennison’s struggled to find the right balance between their careers and raising children, they came across some harsh truths that many other families have learned the hard way. For most parents with full-time jobs, accessing education-focused childcare that is safe, dependable, and affordable is almost impossible. Where most see a problem, the Tennison’s saw an opportunity to provide a service to the community in a way that allows them to follow their passion. The duo courageously eschewed their corporate jobs to launch Gathering Outreach Community Services, a non-profit organization that partners with Alvin ISD to offer k-12 students a curriculum-based afterschool tutoring program as well as a safe environment in which to be mentored in sports, performing arts, and other life skills. Plans to expand the program to include services for parents are currently in the works. As Markeith likes to say, “I don’t believe you find a purpose... it’s the reverse, a purpose finds you”. From-Scratch Pasta Yield: 1 pound WHAT YOU NEED
2 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting 4 large eggs WHAT YOU DO
1. Mound the flour in the center of a work surface with a well in the middle. Crack the eggs into the well and beat with a fork until smooth, then work flour into eggs with the fork. Use a bench scraper to work in the rest of the flour a little at a time. When the flour is incorporated, form the dough with your hands into a rounded mass for kneading. Lightly dust your workspace with flour and knead dough about 10 minutes, until smooth and elastic. Cover dough with a bowl or plastic wrap and rest 1 1/2 hours, or chill overnight. 2. To roll by hand, flour a clean work surface. Vigorously roll dough to a very thin circle and roll constantly with even pressure as it stretches for several minutes until as thin as possible, almost translucent. 3. To cut by hand, lightly fold sheets one at a time into thirds and cut to desired thickness. Recipe from MarthaStewart.com.

Love & Business HOW ASTROWORLD AND CRAWFISH BROUGHT THIS POWERHOUSE COUPLE TOGETHER It was summertime in 2000 when Tasha and Paul Wilburn met for the first time. They were 14 years old and began a powerful friendship. Through highschool they kept in touch and were close friends before each going there separate ways after graduation. However, the distance couldn't keep them from maintaining their bond and friendship. After years of separation, Tasha saw Paul make a post on social media that read, "Don't be trying to get at the kid when crawfish season start. Y'all think y'all slick." Being an avid lover of crawfish, Tasha saw the humor in this and responded with, "I'm trying to hit you up BEFORE crawfish season starts!". The rest is is history and not only did Tasha get her crawfish, but she got the ring as well! This year they will be celebrating their 2nd year of marriage and beyond the marriage they will both be celebrating anniversaries for their businesses right here in Pearland. Tasha is the owner and founder of Get Waisted Body Bar. She offers detox products, weight loss products, cleansers, immune boosters, libido boosters and all natural feminine hygiene products. You can find more information on her products and services at www.whatstheteatox.com. Paul opened up Spice Buddy Den & Grill in 2021 here in Pearland in the Silverlake Shopping Center at 9603 Broadway St Suite 105, Pearland, TX 77584. At Spice Buddy, Paul serves up a whole list of comfort foods and their famous H-Town Philly. This month, Spice Buddy will also serve up Paul's famous crawfish every weekend, so be sure to come out and give them a try!
