It’s a new year, and that signifies new beginnings and a fresh start. With how busy life becomes, it is a nice reprieve to be still for a moment and reflect on where we have been, what the past year has taught us, what we want to grow and learn from, and where we want to go from there. The practice of establishing new goals or a resolution for the coming year is something that can help us focus on what is truly a priority or at least what should be. Some of the most popular New Year’s resolutions center around getting healthier and spending more time with the people we cherish. Other goals may be more community focused revolve around being intentional about finding ways to help people in need in our city. Whatever your goals may be this year, know that the simple act of making a goal is a great first step. We then just have to move from simply thinking about doing those things and make a daily decision to act on them. Our January issue is dedicated to health and wellness in the New Year: eating right, physical fitness and purposeful connections. The importance of being healthy in body, mind and spirit is the focus of this issue. Our hope for you in this New Year is one of wellness, health and love. Here's to a healthy and happy 2022!

Target the cause of unwanted weight gain - not just the symptoms ARTICLE BY JOANNA SANCHEZ | PHOTOGRAPHY BY MORGAN JONES-OSBORNE

The thrill of the hunt to overcome challenges is intoxicating to many and for Rose Klein she has for years provided a service that is, well quite unconventional, but nonetheless successful. She practices the use of hypnosis to take matters in your own hands to control emotional stress and anxiety, which can cause over-eating just to suppress rather than be mindful on what is the cause. Rose has assisted in training many clients how to take self-action against stress and focus on what they most yearn for. “Everyone’s thumbprint for stress and to be stressed is different so if you focus only on why you are stressed, you are only going

to focus on what you want to keep that is painful, not focusing on keeping what you want to get rid of.” As years have passed societies view on weight loss has increased exponentially with ads and commercials about quick surgeries, pills, patches, and fade diets but Rose has a method that safely replaces all those. “I have noticed there is very little assistance to learning to manage the cause of the weight gain.” Having willpower is always spoken as number one but with hypnosis, difficult surgeries and thousands of failed dollars shelled out is replaced with desire and faith to believe in yourself and also proud of the accomplishments seen. “The point of hypnosis is to find the joy in the focus of accomplishment, to finally relax, and to enjoy the repetition of that effective habit.” Rose helps you with repetition of positive habits that get you to the end goal, healthier eating patterns, and how to cope with the stress. Finally living at a healthier weight for your age, sex, and height. “Without the use of antidepressants or anti-anxiety meds a person can be happy and accomplished because they did it, they succeeded. When they use that imagination and see the results happening then gratification occurs.” Self-gratification leads to the management and adaptation to frustrations encountered when you want to give up and give in to negativity. Then, stress can lead the bodies cortisol levels to elevate causing increased appetites and in turn storing energy due to the response in the form of built-up fat tissue. The unique approach Rose provides helps you fixate and focus on what you want. Framing the mind and in turn fueling the body properly to assist one's mental capacity even more with clarity and adaptability. “I had a client mention that they are at peace now because they no longer hear the extra chatter and the to-do lists in their mind. That was just amazing how she described it so beautifully.” “With focusing on that effective habit of just you and what you want to do, you can erase the negative chatter of Christmas past or present.” For our January Health Issue, Rose wanted to provide everyone with a healthier cookie option that is full of antioxidants and is a great substitute for the typical sugar filled ones. For more information and to see if you are a good fit for hypnosis, schedule your free screening at www.southeasthypnosis.com.

ROCK YOUR RIDE Michael And Tracy Stelmach Brings A High-Energy And Exciting New Boutique Fitness Studio Right Here To Pearland ARTICLE BY RUSSELL RAE PHOTOGRAPHY BY CHRISTY WHITE PHOTOGRAPHY

WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST REACTION TO A CYCLEBAR CLASS? Tracy – I was scared. However, the instructors were so consistent and encouraging in their coaching us from when to turn our dial, to our target RPMs, and where we should expect our heart rate. It allowed me to relax and enjoy the class and by the end I had burned 500 calories! Michael – I was blown away walking in the doors! We had lockers waiting for us with our names and an inspirational message on them. Inside we had our own water bottles and cycle shoes. I remember thinking I needed to ask for help on where to clip my shoe onto the bike but before I could ask, there was a CBX instructor already there getting me clipped in.

WHAT MAKES CYCLEBAR STAND OUT AMONGST OTHER FITNESS OPTIONS? Tracy – I think the way we have total control over the whole experience inside of the studio from the lighting to the music really leads to a high-energy and motivating environment. Michael – Our CBX instructors are really the bread and butter of the experience. From the moment you walk in, they direct you to get your shoes, and show you to your locker where you will find your water bottle waiting. They then make sure you know where your bike is, along with a towel for you and help get your feet snapped in for the workout. CONTINUED >

Michael – We have another rider that just moved here from New York, a single mom with 3 kids and

No Room For Excuses VERONICA BECERRA-SOTO TAKES US THROUGH HER BATTLE AGAINST ALL ODDS AND SHARES A FUN, AT HOME WORKOUT YOU CAN TRY!

VERONICA BECERRA-SOTO

It is that time of year again when we make our resolutions to eat healthier, exercise regularly, and lose weight. We buy the gym membership and workout gear because THIS is the year, we finally shed the beer bellies and love handles… but we all know it is just a matter of time before life gets in the way and our motivation evaporates by Valentine’s Day. Then, as we devour that heart-shaped box of chocolates, we wonder if only there was someone to help re-light that fire we once had to get fit. Today, we meet Veronica Becerra-Soto, local personal trainer and community advocate. As Veronica professes, “the mindset is everything and everyone can conquer the world once they conquer themselves.” She is dedicated to helping others achieve their fitness goals regardless of age or physical limitation. Veronica expertly tailors’ nutrition plans and training regimens to each client’s fitness level and objectives. She takes cash or credit, but the one thing she will not accept is excuses. Although she discovered her passion for healthy living and exercise early on from swimming at age 2, strength and conditioning in her teens, to winning her first bodybuilding competition at 18

– things were not always easy for her. Veronica’s battle with breast cancer and ensuing chemotherapy in 2010 left her completely debilitated. She would have been forgiven had she decided to hang up her running shoes then, but Veronica is no mere mortal. Suspecting that exercise and a proper diet would accelerate the healing process, Veronica decided her hard workouts needed an adjustment, not abandonment. “We need to work on ourselves one small step at a time daily because in 365 days we will have taken 365 steps to a better us and can overcome many setbacks” is the mantra she preaches. Even after having a tumor surgically removed from her femur in 2020, she defiantly walked through pain the very next day. Despite all the obstacles, she leads by example without complaint. Today, Veronica trains clients out of her fully equipped garage, whether in-person or virtually. She continues community education and activities such as Wobble before you Gobble, 5k runs, and so much more. To follow or get in touch with Veronica, find her on Instagram or Facebook @VeroBodyFit or visit her website www.verobodyfit.com. CONTINUED > JANUARY 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . Dive Into The Wellness World’s Hottest (Actually, Coldest) Addition

The Cold Plunge

Are you ready to take the plunge? It’s a question you may not have asked yourself before but will now. So what is “The Cold Plunge?” In short, it’s a brisk, three-minute immersion into a cold tub that triggers the body into a state of regulation, greatly improving levels of energy, mental and physical strength and blood circulation. The profound effects of The Plunge can impact your overall health, from reducing chronic pain and inflammation to boosting metabolism and focus and creating better sleep and mental clarity. Co-founded by two entrepreneurs who bonded over their love for health and business, Ryan Duey and Mike Garrett found a friendship and created a vision to rejuvenate people. Two to three minutes a day of plunging into 39-55 degrees of cold water stimulates the mind, body and soul and sets your day into optimistic motion. The goal with the cold water is to lower your core body temperature, and it takes time to do that. “Water cools your body at 25 times what cold air does. Cold water is the quickest activation to do it.”

30

S ELF CA R E | FITNESS

Cold plunging can be done daily or multiple times a day. It’s all about getting people to explore what works for them. They may offer up recommendations, but ultimately it’s you building a relationship with your cold plunge. Many like the morning plunge, others enjoy nighttime. For some, it cools the body down resulting in better sleep. The Cold Plunge offers four different models, all the same size, all cold at 39-55 degrees, and one that can turn into a hot tub at 103 degrees. The heat can be great for clients in really cold environments. There is also an app to control the temperature via bluetooth. You can find The Cold Plunge at thecoldplunge.com and @the.coldplunge on Instagram.
