LIFESTYLE LETTER
Happy New Year, Pascack Valley! There’s something energizing about turning the page to January. It feels like a fresh start with a chance to reset, refocus, and recommit to the things that help us live healthier, fuller and more intentional lives. What I love most is how our community comes alive with that same energy. From local gyms to family-focused practices to wellness centers for children, the Pascack Valley is filled with people and businesses dedicated to helping our residents thrive. This month’s Health & Wellness issue highlights a few of the incredible resources we are fortunate to have right here in our backyard. We begin with Alloy Personal Training in Old Tappan, a studio that’s truly redefining the small-group fitness experience. Their personalized approach, accountability-driven model, and supportive community make fitness attainable for anyone looking to start the year strong. We also take you inside Little Warriors Therapy Center, where passion meets purpose. Their team is making a remarkable impact on children and families throughout the area, providing a warm, uplifting environment designed to help every child reach their full potential. Rounding out the issue, we shine a light on Kayal Pediatrics — a name many local families already trust which is now taking care of our children. Their commitment to compassionate, comprehensive care continues to set the standard in and around Bergen County. We’re proud to feature the work they’re doing to support the next generation of healthy, happy kids. As always, thank you for supporting local businesses, reading each month, and being such an engaged part of the community. Our area is special because of people like you who show up, shop locally, and invest in the well-being of this place we all call home. Wishing you a strong, healthy, and fulfilling start to 2026. I’m excited for all that’s ahead and grateful to continue this journey with you.

When Michelle Fleischer first picked up an embroidery needle, she wasn’t chasing a business idea. She was searching for healing. After experiencing a miscarriage and struggling with secondary infertility, the former corporate trainer turned to crafting as a way to quiet her mind. What began as a therapeutic outlet soon became the foundation for Embroidery Babes, a creative small business rooted in connection, resilience and community. “I picked up an embroidery kit to honor my loss,” Michelle said. “It was the first time in a long while that my mind stopped spinning. I felt calm and in control.” What started as a single rainbow-themed project soon grew into custom embroidered designs and upcycled baby clothes. A stranger’s compliment
on her handmade jacket sparked her next step: an Instagram page (@embroidery.babes) and, eventually, craft shows. “I went from doing embroidery for therapy to doing 20 orders at a time,” Michelle said. “It was amazing, but it also took away the peace embroidery once gave me.” That realization inspired her to shift her business from custom orders to community workshops focused on mindfulness and creative self-care. Embroidery Babes events, like the recent Threaded Together gathering, invite participants to connect, create and heal through shared stories and stitches. Held in partnership with Kara Kushnir from A Work of Heart Counseling in Oradell and Allendale and Jillian Martinez from NJ based non-profit, Courage in Time, the Threaded Together event brought together women who have faced infertility, miscarriage and infant loss. Both Kara and Jillian have collaborated with Michelle on past wellness-focused gatherings, combining their backgrounds in mental health and support work with her passion for creative expression. Kristen Delventhal, Kara’s sister, served as the other presenter for A Work of Heart Counseling and spoke about her infertility journey. “I wanted to create a night where no one felt alone,” Michelle said. “So many women go through this silently. When you hear others speak openly, it’s incredibly powerful.” The sold-out event at Felina in Ridgewood featured more than 15 local sponsors, from therapists and acupuncturists to wellness professionals, all united by a mission to support women’s emotional health. Together, they raised $2,000 for Courage in Time and Resolve, a national infertility advocacy organization. For Michelle, the response was overwhelming. “We had more people wanting to attend than we had space for,” she said. “It showed how much this kind of community support is needed.”
The evening was filled with emotion as guest speakers shared stories of loss and hope, while attendees embroidered keepsakes symbolizing their resilience. “Being surrounded by people who understand, without judgment or the usual ‘just relax’ advice, meant everything,” Michelle said. Beyond special events, Embroidery Babes continues to host wellness-centered workshops such as Unwind Your Mind, blending creativity with conversation on mental and emotional well-being. Michelle also collaborates with schools, corporations and local organizations to bring mindfulness through making. “Embroidery is more than a craft; it’s an act of self-care,” she said. “You’re creating something with your hands, getting off your phone and taking time for yourself. That’s the kind of wellness we all need.” Through needle and thread, Michelle and her partners continue to weave what matters most: connection, creativity and courage stitched together by community. For more info and to register for future events follow @emboidery.babes on Instagram or visit embroiderybabes.com. “WHEN YOU FEEL STRONG, EVERYTHING IN LIFE IMPROVES — YOUR SLEEP, YOUR STRESS, YOUR CONFIDENCE.” - ANTHONY VIGILANTE
After more than two decades safeguarding global networks, Anthony Vigilante decided it was time to help people strengthen something far more personal: themselves. Today, the longtime Montvale resident is the proud owner of two Alloy Personal Training franchises, one in Saddle River and the other in Old Tappan, where his mission is simple: to help people over 40 live stronger, healthier, and more connected lives. “I’ve always loved fitness,” Vigilante said. “Even when I worked in Manhattan in cybersecurity, I was the one friends called for workout or nutrition advice. It’s always been my passion. I just needed the right time to follow it.” Before fitness became his full-time focus, Vigilante spent more than 20 years in the technology world, serving as a chief information security officer in New York City. But after achieving career success, he decided to invest his energy into something that felt more meaningful. “I reached a point where I thought, I’ve built my career, now I want to build my dream,” he said. Coach Will
Coach Ryan
“PEOPLE TELL ME, ‘I COULDN’T KEEP UP WITH MY GRANDKIDS, NOW I CAN.’ OR, ‘I USED TO STRUGGLE CARRYING GROCERIES, BUT NOW I FEEL INDEPENDENT AGAIN.’ THOSE ARE THE STORIES THAT MATTER.” - ANTHONY VIGILANTE That dream came in the form of Alloy Personal Training, a boutique franchise founded by fitness pioneer Rick Mayo. The brand, which began franchising in 2018, was designed around a simple principle: to help people, especially those often overlooked by mainstream gyms, live their best lives through fitness and community. “Alloy focuses on adults 40 and older, which really resonated with me,” Vigilante said. “Most gyms target twenty-somethings. We focus on people who want longevity, mobility, and confidence.” Each Alloy studio runs on a small-group personal training model, limiting classes to six participants. Members receive oneon-one attention from certified trainers and something else they don’t expect: friendship. “When you’re 40 or 50, it’s not easy to make new friends,” Vigilante said. “But our clients work out together, laugh together, and hold each other accountable. It’s like a family.” Each new member begins with a Starting Point Session, a complimentary assessment that includes a full-body scan and movement evaluation. From there, trainers customize workouts based on individual goals and ability levels. The result is a setting Vigilante proudly describes as “The RitzCarlton meets Cheers.”
“You walk in, and everyone knows your name,” he said. “We’ll ask how your vacation was or how your mom’s doing. It’s personal. It’s high-end, but it’s also home.” Vigilante opened his Saddle River studio in May and his Old Tappan location in August. Both quickly found success, in part because Alloy’s close-knit, appointment-based approach fits perfectly with what people now seek in a gym experience. “After the pandemic, people didn’t want to walk into huge gyms with a thousand strangers anymore,” he said. “They wanted space, comfort, and connection. Alloy offers all of that.” Instead of endless rows of equipment, the studios emphasize guided training, accountability, and measurable progress. Monthly check-ins and body composition analyses help members stay on track and motivated. “It’s not about perfection,” Vigilante said. “It’s about consistency. Showing up is 90 percent of the work. We help you do the rest.” For Vigilante, the real reward comes from watching lives change. “People tell me, ‘I couldn’t keep up with my grandkids, now I can,’” he said. “Or, ‘I used to struggle carrying groceries, but now I feel independent again.’ Those are the stories that matter.” He’s seen clients regain confidence, rediscover hobbies, and even transform their health metrics. “Building muscle isn’t about becoming bulky,” he said. “It’s about being capable. When you feel strong, everything else in life improves – your sleep, your stress, your confidence.” Alloy’s philosophy goes beyond the hour spent in the gym. Trainers coach clients on nutrition, hydration, and balanced living without the rigidity of diet culture. “We don’t tell people to give up ice cream or pizza,” Vigilante said. “It’s about moderation and mindfulness. Fitness should enhance your life, not restrict it.” Through Alloy’s partnerships with nutritionists, clients can receive deeper guidance when needed. “Our team is always available, by text, call, or email, whatever it takes to keep people supported,” he said. Vigilante, who has lived in Montvale for 20 years, takes pride in running a business that invests in his own community. “I’ve always loved this area, Old Tappan, Saddle River, Montvale,” he said. “They’re incredible towns filled with people who truly care about one another. I wanted to bring something here that reflects that spirit.” With both studios thriving, Vigilante is already exploring a third Alloy location in Bergen County. But his focus remains the same: to help his neighbors live fuller, stronger lives. “I get to watch people walk in uncertain and walk out confident,” he said. “That’s everything to me. I built this to make a difference, and that’s exactly what we’re doing.” If you’d like to learn more or get started with your fitness journey, visit Anthony Vigilante’s Alloy studios at: Saddle River: 171 East Saddle River Road, Store #6, Saddle River, NJ 07458 (551) 288-7424 Old Tappan: 216 Old Tappan Road, Old Tappan, NJ 07675 (551) 288-8505

Ingredients: • • • •
1 spaghetti squash (about 2 lb) 3 Tbsp melted butter, divided 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese 1 tsp freshly ground tricolor peppercorns (or 1/2 tsp ground black pepper) • Parmesan shavings (optional, for garnish)
Directions:
CACIO PEPE SPAGHETTI SQUASH A lighter, veggie-forward twist on the classic Roman pasta—cheesy, peppery, and irresistibly comforting ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY GWYNN GALVIN Gwynn Galvin of Swirls of Flavor brings a light, vegetable-forward twist to the classic Roman pasta dish! This recipe transforms spaghetti squash into a low-carb, cheesy, and peppery side (or main) that’s perfect for Meatless Monday or a cozy weeknight.
1. Roast the Squash: Preheat your oven to 400°F. Cut the squash in half lengthwise and scoop out the seeds. 2. Prep for Baking: Brush the cut sides with 1 Tbsp of melted butter, then sprinkle with kosher salt and a bit of pepper if you like. 3. Bake: Place the squash, cut-side down, on a baking sheet. Roast for about 45 minutes, or until the f lesh is tender. 4. Shred It: Let the squash cool for 15 minutes, then rake a fork through the flesh to form “spaghetti” strands. 5. Mix & Finish: Toss the strands with the remaining 2 Tbsp melted butter, Parmesan, and the ground peppercorns. 6. Garnish (Optional): Top with Parmesan shavings for an extra-special touch.
Extra Tips: • Don’t discard the squash seeds — you can roast them like pumpkin seeds for a tasty snack. • If you don’t have tricolor peppercorns, plain black pepper works just fine. • For a dairy-free twist, you could try swapping butter for olive oil. Gwynn creates easy, family-friendly recipes made with fresh, simple ingredients. Visit swirlsofflavor.com for more!

A family centered therapy center helps children grow through connection, collaboration and individualized developmental support ARTICLE BY TIANA SCONIERS | PHOTOGRAPHY BY CLARA WANG PHOTOGRAPHY

Little Warriors Therapy Center helps children find their voice and confidence through personalized therapy. “We focus on connection first and skills follow,” said founder Colleen Tierney, emphasizing family partnership in every session and child-centered care.
Little Warriors Therapy Center
“Every child is a warrior, and we are honored to be part of their journey.” - Colleen Tierney Colleen began her journey in 2020 after working in public schools for 30 years. She started a small private practice called Speech Warrior, visiting families after school. “I actually really enjoyed working with families more than my work in the schools,” Colleen said. She realized her child-centered, collaborative approach produced stronger results when caregivers were partners in therapy. In 2022, Colleen left the school system and committed full-time to her practice. By 2025, she expanded and rebranded the center as Little Warriors Therapy Center. “Our goal is to grow and offer more services for families,” she said. The center now provides multiple disciplines designed to support children holistically. Speech therapy addresses articulation, expressive and receptive language, and social communication. The team also supports children with augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) through
speech-generating devices. Feeding and oral-motor therapy help children with chewing, swallowing, and mouth strength, while myofunctional therapy targets oral structures. Occupational therapy develops fine-motor skills and supports sensory regulation. Therapists coordinate so that skills learned in one session reinforce other areas, creating a fully integrated approach. “We meet children where they are,” Colleen said. “Everything we do is collaborative and family-centered.” Families receive coaching and strategies to continue therapy at home, allowing skills to grow beyond the center. This emphasis on real-life outcomes sets Little Warriors apart in a crowded healthcare landscape. Colleen said the most meaningful moments come from watching children gain confidence. She recalled a young girl with childhood apraxia of speech who was two years old when she arrived. CONTINUED >

“She was very shut down and frustrated,” Colleen said. “She did not want to communicate.” Through careful relationship-building and collaboration with her mother, the child learned to use a speech-generating device, giving her a reliable way to express herself. Over time she became comfortable participating in sessions. “She now walks in happily and trusts the process. She is not afraid to communicate anymore,” Colleen said. Each child’s therapy plan is individualized. Assessments collect extensive background information and involve collaboration with schools and outside providers. “We tailor programming, goals, and objectives based on the child’s profile,” Colleen said. The center uses evidence-based practices to guide development across multiple domains, ensuring therapy addresses both current needs and future growth. Little Warriors offers speech therapy, occupational therapy, feeding therapy, AAC, and myofunctional therapy in a fully integrated approach. Therapists coordinate so that skills learned in one session support other areas. Occupational therapy strengthens fine-motor skills and sensory regulation. Feeding therapy ensures children develop healthy oral-motor patterns. Speech therapy improves communication, while AAC devices help children who cannot yet speak clearly. Myofunctional therapy addresses oral structures to support both speech and feeding. Colleen said family involvement is essential. “If I spend an hour a week with your child and give you strategies for the other hours, children make much greater gains,” she said. The team coaches parents on how to implement skills at home, creating continuity between therapy sessions and everyday life. The center also embraces neurodiversity-affirming, play-based approaches. Clinicians connect first and let trust lead to progress. “Every child is a warrior, and we are honored to be part of their journey,” Colleen said. Little Warriors aims to make families feel empowered. Colleen compared the process to trusting a specialist. “Parents may not know the specifics of what is going on, but with guidance, they can understand the plan and support their child at home,” she said. Families leave with tools and confidence that allow therapy to continue outside the center.

“My goal is to grow into more of a center with other professionals supporting children. We are always looking for people who resonate with our care philosophy and want to help children thrive.” - Colleen Tierney Looking ahead, Colleen plans to expand support into additional developmental areas. While she has not finalized future programs, she said, “My goal is to grow into more of a center with other professionals supporting children.” The philosophy will remain the same: connection, family partnership, and real-life outcomes. The center also seeks therapists who share this mission. Colleen said, “We are always looking for people who resonate with our care philosophy and want to help children thrive.”

INTRODUCING
Kayal Pediatrics A new chapter in family-centered care
ARTICLE BY TIANA SCONIERS | PHOTOGRAPHY BY KAYAL PEDIATRICS

FAM ILY CA R E | W EL L NESS
Robert A. Kayal, MD President & CEO
Dr. Basil Bruno, MD, Chief of Pediatrics
Kayal Pediatrics will open January 5 in Franklin Lakes, marking a major expansion for the Kayal Medical Group and ushering in a new model of family-centered healthcare. The division will be led by longtime Bergen County pediatricians Dr. Basil Bruno, Chief of Kayal Pediatrics, and Dr. Uma Taneja, both chosen personally by Robert A. Kayal, MD, FAAOS, FAAHKS, FACS after caring for his six children and two grandchildren for years. “That speaks volumes about the level of trust we have in them,” Dr. Kayal said. “They cared for my own children and grandchildren, and that is why they were chosen to spearhead this.” The new practice will offer the full spectrum of pediatric primary care, including newborn evaluations, well visits, sports physicals, developmental screenings and rapid testing for common illnesses. Dr. Kayal emphasized the team’s commitment to accessibility, saying, “We firmly believe in same-day appointments. We never say no.” The practice will be in-network with all major insurance companies to help families receive timely and affordable care. Mental health support will play a prominent role. Dr. Taneja, who has completed additional behavioral health training, said, “I want to help kids and adolescents who struggle with anxiety and emotional challenges. I want to be there for them.” Although Kayal Pediatrics is a dedicated pediatrics division, families will still benefit from the resources of the Kayal Medical Group, including orthopaedics, pain management, gynecology, physical therapy, chiropractic care, rheumatology and advanced medical imaging. One defining element of the new practice will be its integration of telemedicine and at-home diagnostic tools. The team plans to use Nonagon, which allows parents to capture lung and heart sounds, temperature readings, and ear and throat images from home, as well as CurieDx, an AI-based tool with 92% accuracy for identifying strep throat. “For the first time in this area, we are going to be spearheading that technology,” Dr. Kayal said. “We are embracing artificial intelligence to make sure we deliver the most cutting-edge technologies in alignment with our slogan, “Insist on Excellence, insist on Kayal Pediatrics.”

As the opening approaches, the physicians say they are building a practice where families feel seen, heard and supported. While in person visits remain the foundation, telemedicine will be integrated to help families manage care during busy schedules. “We want every family to feel comfortable coming to see us,” Dr. Bruno said. “Whether it is a newborn visit or a late night concern, we want parents to know we are here.” Kayal Pediatrics will follow the evidence-based guidelines of the American Academy of Pediatrics, including immunization recommendations. At the same time, the physicians say they will approach vaccine conversations with sensitivity. “We follow all AAP guidelines for vaccines,” Dr. Kayal said. “But we also want to be respectful of family choices. Our goal is to guide, not judge.” Education will also play a central role, with the practice planning to use social media to share updates, pediatric tips and technology tutorials. With their doors opening soon, the team says they look forward to welcoming families and building lifelong relationships. The Franklin Lakes location of Kayal Pediatrics has been designed to provide a calm and welcoming environment where children feel safe and parents feel reassured. With more than three decades of experience serving Bergen County families, Dr. Bruno said, “We want parents to feel that from birth through young adulthood, their children have a medical home they can trust.”
K AYA L P E D I AT R I C S Kayal Pediatrics will open January 5th in Franklin Lakes, offering full-service pediatric care with a strong focus on behavioral health, and rapid testing. Families can also use advanced home diagnostic tools for quicker evaluations. With seamless access to specialty services across the Kayal Medical Group, the practice plans to expand with a second location in 2026.

“We are embracing artificial intelligence to make sure we deliver the most cutting-edge technologies in alignment with our slogan, “Insist on Excellence! Insist on Kayal Pediatrics!” Robert A. Kayal, MD, FA AOS, FA AHKS, FACS Dr. Taneja’s passion for mental health will anchor the practice’s commitment to emotional and psychological well-being. “Kids need support in every aspect,” she said. “Mental, physical and emotional health. We want to help them Robert A. Kayal, MD President & CEO in all three.” Technology will support that mission by enabling faster evaluations and more comfortable care. Parents will be taught how to submit recordings and images through approved platforms, helping physicians determine urgency, provide immediate guidance or schedule timely follow-up care. These tools may significantly reduce the need for invasive tests for children who become anxious with traditional methods. “We are embracing these technologies because they help us deliver care faster and more comfortably,” Dr. Kayal said. Kayal Pediatrics will be open six days each week and will offer Saturday hours, overnight coverage, same-day appointments and full in-network access for families across the region. Plans are underway for a second location in 2026. Through the combination of experienced physicians, advanced technology and a philosophy rooted in kindness, compassion, empathy and connection, Kayal Pediatrics aims to deliver a new standard of pediatric care for the community. Creating a Better Snowman A Few Tips to Get You Rolling
There’s probably no more quintessential symbol of winter than a snowman. We’ve all seen Frosty and are probably pretty familiar with Olaf. But if you want to install one into your own yard, you’ll have to put a little elbow grease into creating one without the help of world-class animators. Here are some tips to help give your yard a well-dressed frozen sentry sure to turn your neighbors’ heads.
well-packed snowball and get rolling, but don’t just go in one direction. Roll the ball to start accumulating snow, then roll back, then roll in a different direction. Pack and begin to shape your snowball as you go. Reinforce as necessary. Look to use a 3-2-1 ratio for the sections.
Tip 3:
EVEN SNOWMEN CRAVE STABILITY.
Tip 1:
NOT ALL SNOW IS SNOWMAN SNOW. It takes more than a flurry to build a snowman. Heavy, slushy snow won’t work, and if it’s too powdery dry it won’t pack together. If you can pack a good snowball, you can build a snowman. Bonus tip: Dry snow can be modified to workable snowman snow with a quick spritz of water from a spray bottle, or a light mist from that garden hose you really should have already put away for the winter.
Tip 2:
ROLL TOWARDS YOUR GOAL — THE LONG WAY. Decide where to position your snowman and make that your finish line. Start with a
Once you get your base section in place, shore up the bottom with snow. Then at the top, create a bowl-shaped indentation to allow the next section to sit securely. Ensure each section is well-packed with added snow around the “joint” between the sections.
Tip 4:
SNOW IS HEAVY. ENLIST A BUDDY. A willing helper can help lift that heavy next stage into place. You can even roll it onto a tarp and lift from either side to get it up there. A third set of hands can help move it into place. Otherwise, use plywood as a ramp to roll it up yourself (braced well against the bottom with plenty of support underneath, so as to not damage the base). You might need an extra bowl of Wheaties to roll it up there alone.
Tip 5:
PILOT HOLES ARE YOUR FRIEND. Simply jamming details into your snowman can mess with its integrity. Use a sharp stick to gently create some pilot holes for your features before you set them into place.
Tip 6:
GIVE HIM SOME PERSONALITY. There’s always that classic snowman uniform of a scarf, hat, a carrot nose and coal (sure, we all have that lying around these days — river rocks might be easier to get your hands on). Or you could be a bit more creative, maybe with an old oversized Hawaiian shirt, a jazzy vest, or go all-out and channel your inner Martha Stewart, breaking out your Dremel to make something custom for your wintery lawn guest. You might need to use your imagination — not many of us have corncob pipes or top hats anymore, either. Pro tip: if you’re dressing your snowman, put any body clothing you might use on before adding the arms. Just remember. If you mess it up, it’s ok because he’ll be back again some day.

BUILDING HEALTHIER HEAR FROM NASM-CERTIFIED PERSONAL TRAINER ABOUT ESTABLISHING THE BEST HABITS ARTICLE BY KRISTIN BURNELL
The new year is a classic kickoff to start fresh and build many resolutions that we all hope stick around. How many times do your resolutions fall through each year? It can be challenging to build new habits and switch up routines if you’re looking for a change. That’s why we rounded up the best advice to establishing habits and making them stay for good. We spoke with Danielle Johnston, National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM)-certified personal trainer and aspiring kinesiologist, who broke down her top tips to maintaining healthy habits this new year.
58
EXP E RT H E LP | HEALTH + WE LLN E SS
START WITH A SMALL HABIT AND MAKE IT SOMETHING YOU ENJOY
HABITS
Think 1-3 things maximum and then give yourself at least a month or two to apply the change. If you like to eat and cook, maybe try a new recipe or browse a cookbook in the library or bookstore for inspiration. If you like fashion, maybe try cleaning out a section of your closet (i.e. tops, bottoms, shoes, etc) to make way for 1 new piece. If you like being outdoors, maybe you try adding in just a 5 minute walk down the road.
IF YOU MISS A DAY, TRY AGAIN
If you miss a day or make a mistake with whatever resolution you’re working on, take that next opportunity to try again. Danielle uses the goal to eat healthier as an example. Health can be interpreted in many different ways but if you can take the small first step of looking at ingredients, that alone can make a world’s difference in the recipe you use so maybe you don’t even have to alter or substitute it. Or if your goal is to snack less but one day you snack more, don’t wave the flag and sabotage your efforts. Take a minute to breathe through the moment and then move on, enjoying the ebb and flow of health instead of going all in or nothing. Starting small allows you to adjust everyday habits that will, with time, transition to lifestyle changes.
CREATE 3 DIFFERENT TYPES OF RESOLUTIONS
Danielle says to create 1 health resolution, 1 personal resolution, and 1 professional resolution as it is the best format to better yourself in multiple realms instead of just physical health. Too often, we get caught up in this “New Year New Me” mindset and create a list of things you want to change or start doing. But as they get lost in the busy to-do list of life and we forget,
“The new year is a classic kickoff to start fresh and build many resolutions that we all hope stick around.” we can also feel like a failure and revert to “I’ll try again tomorrow or next year.” But what if you don’t have to start over, just keep going.
TRACK YOUR PROGRESS AND VISUALIZE YOUR FUTURE
Whether you keep a notebook of your habit building, or keep track on your phone, it is important to acknowledge the personal progress made. This will also help you see the future that you want to build as you make more desirable changes in your life. If you want to track how you feel after working out, it will serve as a reflection on the progress made through what has been written down. This will encourage you to continue pushing for your goals!

W I N T E R C OM FORT W I T H A L E BA N E SE T W I ST Simple, wholesome & healthy recipes featuring NAYA’s new pantry collection
January always brings a return to quieter kitchens; food that feels restorative and grounded. As interest grows in fresh, whole-food eating—like the Mediterranean diet, known for its olive oil, herbs, grains, and minimally processed ingredients—more cooks are looking to cuisines that naturally embody those principles. Lebanese cooking is one of them. Built on those heart-healthy oils, antioxidant-rich spices, legumes, nuts, and bright herbs, Lebanese cuisine offers a lighter kind of comfort: warming and satisfying, but rarely heavy. It’s food shaped as much by generosity and gathering as by technique—meals meant to share. That spirit has helped NAYA—the fast-casual Middle Eastern brand rooted in uniquely Lebanese flavors located in Montvale in The Shoppes at DePiero Farm become a Pascack Valley favorite.
62
C ULIN A RY C R E AT ION S | F OOD + BE VE RAGE
Now, its line of pantry essentials, sourced directly from Lebanese farmers and artisans, allows home cooks to bring those same vibrant flavors into their own kitchens. Cold- pressed olive oil, za’atar, mixed nuts, and aromatic spice blends—available at local stores—turn simple winter cooking into something bright and deeply satisfying. To celebrate the launch, we’re sharing two coldweather staples—Batata Harra (Lebanese-Style Roasted Potatoes) and Man’oushe (Lebanese-Style Flatbread)—recipes rooted in Lebanese tradition and perfect for weeknights. Wholesome, flavor-forward, and built on ingredients that naturally support a healthier way of eating. Bring a classic taste of Lebanon into your own kitchen with our vibrant blend of red pepper,

The New Frontier of Health U N D E R S TA N D I N G T H E “WHY” BEHIND WELLNESS ARTICLE BY ANGELA BROOCKERD PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANIE JONES AND PROVIDED like ferritin or SHBG—which binds testosterone and estrogen—are completely missed. Beyond lab work, there are other factors: mitochondrial health, sleep quality, mental health, and even how sensitive your dopamine and serotonin receptors are. “Normal” labs do not always equal normal physiology for you.
AN INTERVIEW WITH DR. KYLE GILLETT
Why do so many people feel exhausted, foggy, or unwell, even when their medical tests insist everything is “fine”? Why are we prescribed quick fixes instead of being given real answers? Across modern medicine, a shift is happening. More patients are demanding real explanations, and more clinicians are rethinking what “healthcare” should actually mean. Leading that shift is Dr. Kyle Gillett, a dual board-certified physician in Family Medicine and Obesity Medicine and an expert in metabolic, hormonal, and preventive health. Through his clinic, research, and The Gillett Health Podcast, he’s become a trusted voice for people seeking science-based, root-cause solutions rather than symptom-based band-aids. “Functional medicine is really ‘root cause medicine,’” Dr. Gillett often says. “It’s about asking why the problem exists and not just quieting the noise.” In this Q&A, Dr. Gillett breaks down the most common questions he hears from patients and offers simple, actionable guidance anyone can begin using today.
1. “WHY DO I FEEL AWFUL EVEN THOUGH MY LABS ARE ‘NORMAL’?”
Dr. Gillett: I like to say, “There is no such thing as ‘we’ve done everything.’” We can always dig deeper. Often, the labs ordered are the wrong type of assay, or important markers
66
LOCA L CH OICE | HEALTH + WE LLN E SS
2. “HOW DO I FIX MY ENERGY, BRAIN FOG, OR SLEEP WITHOUT 20 MEDICATIONS?”
Dr. Gillett: Start with a good, comprehensive lab panel to assess nutrients and hormones. Then build the foundation with sleep. My favorite tool is the 10/3/2/1/0 rule: • 10 hours before bed: No caffeine • 3 hours: Avoid large meals and alcohol • 2 hours: No vigorous exercise • 1 hour: No bright blue or white light • 0: No snoozing and no inconsistent sleep/wake times Aim for 7+ hours of high-quality sleep. When sleep improves, energy almost always follows.
3. “IS MY GUT ACTUALLY CAUSING ALL THESE OTHER PROBLEMS?”
Dr. Gillett: Gut health influences most major health issues, but it’s rarely the only problem. Diet is my second pillar of health for a reason. Exercise, sleep, and stress reduction all improve gut function too. Even simple tools like self-hypnotherapy apps can reduce gut-related symptoms.
4. “WHAT CAN I DO RIGHT NOW, TODAY, TO START FEELING BETTER?”
Dr. Gillett: Focus on the pillars of health: diet, exercise, sleep, stress, sunlight, social connection, and spiritual
“I believe that true innovation requires a commitment to constructive self-criticism to continuously raise the standard of care.” health. Treat them like habits and find ways to make them enjoyable or easy to start. Supplements and medications are supportive tools, not substitutes. Think of them like turbo chargers: they enhance a system that’s already functioning.
A FINAL WORD FROM DR. GILLETT
“The goal isn’t to tell people what to do, rather it’s to give them the information they need to decide what’s best for themselves.” By understanding the why behind your symptoms, labs, and lifestyle choices, you become the driver, not the passenger, of your health journey.
