A Season of Joy, Giving, and Community

As the holiday season fills the Pascack Valley with lights, laughter, and a little extra magic, it’s the perfect time to slow down and appreciate all that makes this community such a special place to call home. From the bustling local restaurants to the neighbors who lend a helping hand, December reminds us that the greatest gifts aren’t always the ones wrapped — they’re the people and moments that surround us.

In this month’s  Holiday Issue, we celebrate that spirit of giving and connection. Our Gift Guide highlights thoughtful finds from businesses in the area and beyond.

We also feature Kruse Law, a trusted name that’s been helping accident victims for years with professional care. Financial advisor Matt Libien offers smart insight on navigating holiday spending and giving — a timely reminder that the season of generosity doesn’t have to mean financial stress.

This issue also shines a light on  Bergen Volunteers, an incredible nonprofit whose work exemplifies the true meaning of giving back. Their dedication to helping those in need is a reminder that kindness and service create the strongest bonds in our community. And finally, we’re proud to spotlight  Hoffman Floor & Home, a longtime local family business whose legacy of craftsmanship and integrity continues to make local homes more beautiful year after year.

As 2026 approaches, I want to express my heartfelt gratitude — to our readers, supporters, and partners — for another wonderful year of sharing stories that inspire and uplift. Your continued support allows us to celebrate the people and businesses that make the Pascack Valley shine.

From my family to yours, I wish you a joyful holiday season filled with warmth, laughter, and peace — and a happy, healthy New Year ahead!

JUSTICE WITH COMPASSION

Kruse Law combines legal skill and compassion, guiding clients with integrity and prioritizing their well-being

For attorney Kevin Kruse, practicing law is about people, not paperwork. After nearly a decade with a large personal injury firm, Kruse saw how easily clients could become numbers in a system driven by volume and speed. He founded Kruse Law to change that.

“Personal injury law isn’t about chasing claims. It’s about helping people put their lives back together after something unexpected.” — Kevin Kruse

“I realized that at bigger firms, clients don’t always get the personal attention they deserve,” Kruse said. “I wanted to build a practice where people feel heard and supported from start to finish.”

At Kruse Law, that commitment shows in every case. Clients work directly with an attorney instead of going through layers of staff. Whether the case involves an automobile accident, a slip-and-fall incident or another form of personal injury, Kruse and his team focus on understanding the person behind the case.

“We take the time to learn how an accident has affected someone’s life,” Kruse said. “It is not just about compensation. It is about helping them rebuild their life after something unexpected.”

Kruse said his firm’s approach begins with listening. “The first conversation sets the tone for everything,” he said. “We want clients to feel like they are talking to someone who genuinely cares about their well-being, not just their case file.”

He believes timing can make a major difference in a case’s outcome and encourages people who experience an accident to reach out to an attorney as soon as possible. “Insurance companies have teams working for them from day one,” he said. “You deserve the same level of representation.”

He advises anyone involved in an accident to document everything and seek medical attention even if symptoms seem minor. “It is better to be safe and have a record of what happened,” he said. “Photos, police reports and doctor evaluations are incredibly important if you need to make a claim.”

Kruse also takes time to educate clients about their rights. “A lot of people don’t realize how complex these cases can become,” he said. “We explain each step clearly so they understand what’s happening. That knowledge gives people confidence during an uncertain time.”

At Kruse Law, clients do not pay upfront for representation. The firm works on a contingency basis,

The Kruse Law Team

which means attorneys only receive payment if they win or settle the case. “There should be no financial barrier to seeking justice,” Kruse said. “People deserve the chance to recover fully without worrying about costs.”

As winter arrives, Kruse said safety should be everyone’s top priority. Slippery sidewalks, icy roads and early darkness increase the risk of accidents during the holiday season. “Most accidents happen when people are rushing or distracted,” he said. “Take your time, wear the right shoes and drive carefully. A few extra minutes can prevent a serious injury.”

Beyond the courtroom, Kruse is passionate about community and believes small businesses play a vital role in strengthening local connections. “Small businesses are the backbone of the community,” he said. “They employ people locally, they support one another and they care about how the community does. When one business succeeds, it helps everyone.”

Kruse Law strives to be part of that positive ripple effect. “We are not just here to win cases,” Kruse said. “We are here to make a difference for people who live and work here.”

As the holidays approach, Kruse encourages everyone to look out for one another, both on and off the roads. “The season is about family, gratitude and connection,” he said. “It is a time to care for others and to appreciate what we have.”

Kruse hopes that through his work, he can show people that personal injury law is not what stereotypes suggest. “For years, the insurance industry has tried to make injury lawyers look greedy or opportunistic,” he said. “The truth is, we help people who are hurt and trying to get their lives back. There is nothing opportunistic about that.”

Owner and Founder Kevin Kruse
“The holidays remind us how precious time with loved ones is, and that safety, care and compassion should always come first.”
— Kevin Kruse

Attorney Kevin Kruse says his work is built on one guiding principle: true advocacy goes beyond the courtroom and focuses on the people it serves. “Personal injury law isn’t about chasing claims. It’s about helping people put their lives back together after something unexpected. The holidays remind us how precious time with loved ones is, and that safety, care and compassion should always come first,” Kruse mentioned.

Looking ahead, Kruse plans to grow his firm while keeping its focus on personal attention

and integrity. “We want to help more people without losing what makes us different,” he said.

“That personal touch is what matters most.”

For Kruse, every client is a neighbor, and every outcome reflects his guiding philosophy: community, compassion and commitment.

“I just want to wish everyone a safe and happy holiday season,” he said. “And to remind people that we are all part of something bigger when we care for one another.”

BUILDING TRUST, DELIVERING QUALITY, AND BLENDING TRADITION WITH MODERN DESIGN IN THE PASCACK VALLEY

A LEGACY OF QUALITY FLOORING

The Hoffman Floor & Home Team

Hoffman Floor & Home and Park Ridge Floor & Home, owned by Tony Sicilia, have been cornerstones of the Pascack Valley community for nearly three decades. With 48 years of experience in the flooring industry, Tony’s journey began as a part-time job and blos-

own was driven by his desire for more control over his career and the ability to provide for his growing family. Today, his son-in-law and son play vital roles in the business, with his son Anthony heading operations and overseeing jobs on a daily basis. "Our

somed into a thriving family business. His commitment to customer service and high-quality products has earned both Hoffman and Park Ridge Floor & Home loyal followings in their respective neighborhoods.

Tony Sicilia’s entrance into the flooring business was far from planned. After earning a college degree and pursuing aspirations to attend law school, Tony found himself working at a carpet store in the 1970s. What began as a part-time job turned into a fulltime passion. Over the years, he honed his craft, learning the ins and outs of the industry, climbing the ranks, and eventually deciding to open his own store. In 1998, with the help of his wife, Kathy, they established Hoffman Floor & Home in Westwood, followed by Park Ridge Floor & Home in nearby Park Ridge, expanding their reach and presence across the region.

The stores quickly became local favorites, known for their personalized service and top-notch products. Tony’s decision to venture out on his

staff brings a wide range of skills to the table. In addition to Anthony and Ed, my “nephew by association,” Jason, is a color-coordination specialist. Ginny, who handles our Park Ridge location, is a true maven when it comes to highend carpeting products we have available," Tony mentions.

As the flooring industry has evolved, so too has Tony’s business. Today, Hoffman Floor & Home and Park Ridge Floor & Home specialize in a variety of flooring options, including luxurious carpeting, hardwood, and vinyl, along with custom stair runners and railings. Both showrooms are stocked with the latest designs and trends, ensuring the business stays ahead of customer demands.

In addition to the wide selection of flooring options, the stores also pride themselves on customer education and service. Tony has always believed that knowing the product inside and out is key to success. “We’re not just selling flooring; we’re helping people build their dream homes,” Tony says. “That’s what makes our work so rewarding.”

The company’s small, tight-knit team of eight employees, including back-office staff, ensures that each job, no matter how big or small, receives personalized attention. Tony’s son, Anthony, frequently works alongside the installers to ensure that the job is done right. It’s this level of attention to detail and hands-on involvement that has set Hoffman Floor & Home and Park Ridge Floor & Home apart from the competition.

A favorite moment for Tony was a lighthearted mishap that ended up being a defining customer service story for the business. Twenty-five years ago, a customer’s home was mistakenly “carpeted” by a neighboring homeowner’s house during a service call. Instead of getting upset, Tony’s team handled the mix-up by offering a hefty discount to the original customer, turning a small mistake into a lasting impression. This incident has since been remembered fondly as a key turning point for the business, cementing its reputation for great customer service.

“Years ago, we used to see the bulk of our business from Labor Day to Christmas Eve,” says Tony, the owner. “It was a crazy time, and we'd often be working around the clock to meet the demand. Now, things have changed.” In fact, Tony points out that the industry has transformed into an "11-month" cycle, as customer demand for home improvement is no longer confined to the last quarter of the year. “Now, we get business yearround, which is great for us and for our customers, who don’t have to rush into decisions,” he adds.

HOLIDAY SPENDING MADE SIMPLE: Smart Money Moves

Tips from Matt Libien to keep holidays joyful and debt-free

The holiday season is often described as “the most wonderful time of the year,” but for many families it also brings the most financial stress. Between gift giving, entertaining and charitable donations, expenses can pile up quickly, leaving many to enter January with hefty credit card balances.

WellsFargoAdvi sors

Matt Libien, managing director at Wells Fargo Advisors in Paramus, says this season is about being intentional, thoughtful and prepared when it comes to spending. He emphasizes that the holidays should be a time of joy, not a source of financial strain.

“Everybody wants to be generous,” Libien says. “But you need to maintain your financial health. Do not overextend yourself.”

One of the biggest pitfalls, he explains, is relying too heavily on credit cards. While it may feel easier to swipe now and deal with the bill later, many do not consider how long they will be paying it back or how much added interest increases the true cost. “People often end up paying for the holidays well into the following summer,” he cautions.

About Matt Libien

Matt Libien is a managing director at Wells Fargo Advisors in Paramus, New Jersey, where he has worked since 2009. With more than 25 years of experience guiding clients, Libien specializes in wealth management, retirement planning and investment strategies. His approachable advice helps families and individuals achieve financial confidence, especially during high-spending holiday seasons.

Instead, Libien urges families to focus on value rather than price tags. “It is not the price of a gift that matters, it is the thought behind it,” he says. A creative, heartfelt gesture will often mean more than something extravagant, and it can help curb unnecessary spending.

He also recommends making small adjustments that add up, such as cooking at home rather than relying on takeout during the busy holiday rush. “Simple changes can save a lot of money,” Libien notes.

At its heart, his message is about balance: enjoying the spirit of generosity while staying grounded in financial responsibility. With a few thoughtful strategies, families can ring in the new year with joy and without lingering debt.

1. COOK AT HOME

Busy schedules make it tempting to grab takeout or dine out frequently, but those costs add up fast. Cooking at home, even for quick weeknight meals, can save hundreds of dollars over the season. That money can instead go toward thoughtful gifts or meaningful holiday experiences with family.

2. FOCUS ON THOUGHTFUL GIFTS

It’s easy to assume expensive gifts show more love, but that’s not true. A personalized or creative gift often carries more meaning than a highpriced item. Libien encourages shoppers to prioritize emotional value over monetary value, focusing on gestures that reflect care and attention.

3. LIMIT CREDIT CARD USE

Swiping a card may be convenient, but the hidden costs can linger. Interest charges and balances rolled into the new year can turn bargain buys into costly regrets. Whenever possible, stick to cash or debit to stay grounded in your actual budget and avoid long-term debt.

5. PLAN YEAR-END FINANCES

Generosity doesn’t have to be spread thin. Libien advises families to pick one or two charities that truly matter to them. Concentrating giving not only maximizes impact but also helps manage finances more responsibly. Donor-advised funds may also provide added tax benefits.

The close of the calendar year is an important checkpoint. Libien recommends reviewing 401(k) contributions, paying down debt and discussing charitable giving with an accountant. Even modest financial adjustments made before Dec. 31 can set families up for a stronger, more stable financial start in the new year.

6. SAVE THROUGHOUT THE YEAR

The holidays don’t have to feel like a financial ambush. By setting aside small amounts regularly, families can enter the season with peace of mind. Treat savings like a monthly bill, out of sight and out of mind, so that by December, gift-giving feels joyful instead of stressful.

4. CHOOSE CHARITIES WISELY

BUILDING BERGEN’S HEART: Volunteers Strengthen Community Connections

CEO SHARA NADLER LEADS NONPROFIT EMPOWERING LIVES THROUGH VOLUNTEERISM
ARTICLE BY TIANA SCONIERS | PHOTOGRAPHY BY BERGEN VOLUNTEERS
Bergen Volunteers CEO Shara Nadler holds the Impact Report at the office.

The holidays often remind people of the power of giving, but for Bergen Volunteers, that spirit lasts all year.

For nearly six decades, the Bergen County nonprofit has been a steady force for good, connecting those who want to help with those who need support. Led by CEO Shara Nadler, Bergen Volunteers has grown into a community anchor that uplifts thousands of residents each year.

“Our programs are volunteer driven,” Nadler said. “They range from keeping seniors safe in their homes to mentoring at-risk youth to help navigate through challenging times. We also help match volunteers with meaningful opportunities.”

The organization began nearly 60 years ago when a small group of residents noticed gaps in local social services and decided to take action. What started as neighbors being there for each other has grown into a network of hundreds of volunteers that reach more than 8,000 people annually through eight programs.

Bergen Volunteers meets the needs of older adults who live alone or need extra help. Through its CHORE program, volunteers visit seniors’ homes to perform small but important repairs such as fixing doorbells, tightening handrails and installing grab bars.

Another program, CHEER, matches volunteers with seniors who need companionship. Volunteers stop by for weekly visits, run errands or simply spend time together. “Sometimes it’s just about a trusted, friendly person being there to talk to,” Nadler said. “We want our seniors to feel seen, cared for and connected to their community.”

Bergen Volunteers helps a resident with home repair.

A newer initiative, the Shirvan Family Senior Safety Initiative, offers free home evaluations to identify risks and help seniors live safely and independently.

The Mentoring Program pairs volunteers with young people between the ages of 10 to 21 who need guidance and encouragement.

“One compelling story is about a young man who was struggling with his mental health,” Nadler said. His mentor began meeting him regularly for meals. The young man loved hamburgers, and this grew into a fun project to rate local burgers in the area. It helped him reconnect with life, and years later, their friendship still continues.

Other initiatives, such as Bergen Reads, focus on literacy by pairing volunteers with students in Hackensack and Teaneck elementary schools. More than 70 volunteers meet weekly with children to strengthen reading skills and build confidence.

Financial stability is another key focus. Through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program, volunteers help low-income residents prepare and file taxes at no cost. “A $100 refund can make a difference for a family,” Nadler said. “It might help pay an electricity bill or put food on the table.”

This December, Bergen Volunteers will host a new initiative called Neighbors Helping Neighbors, taking place Sunday, Dec. 7. The event will bring together 200 volunteers to assemble 2,000 care packages filled with essential items such as snack packs for students, toiletry kits for women’s shelters and cold weather bundles for homebound seniors.

“When we come together as a community, that’s when the magic truly happens. Every act of kindness creates lasting change.”
- Shara Nadler

The organization also invests in leadership development through its Bergen LEADS and Teen LEADS programs, which help adults and teens become more informed, thoughtful leaders in Bergen County.

“The holidays can be isolating for many,” Nadler said. “We want everyone, from children to older adults, to feel cared for and remembered. When we come together as a community, that’s when the magic truly happens.”

As Bergen Volunteers approaches its 60th anniversary in 2026, the organization continues to rely on the generosity of individuals, families and businesses to keep its programs strong.

“We are grateful for every donation and volunteer for making a real difference across Bergen County,” Nadler said. “Giving back and strengthening our community is a long-lasting gift.”

For Nadler, who has led the nonprofit for just over a year, the work is deeply personal. “I’ve been a volunteer all my life,” she said. “There’s nothing more powerful than seeing how one small act of kindness can change a person’s day or even their life.”

HEATHER ZWAIN TRANSFORMS ORDINARY PORCHES INTO ENCHANTING SEASONAL SCENES FILLED WITH WARMTH, JOY AND HEART

PHOTOGRAPHY AND PUMPKIN & KALE CO.

ARTICLE BY TIANA SCONIERS | PHOTOGRAPHY BY BILL SHAW
Heather Zwain founder of PUMPKIN & KALE CO.
“It’s when I feel most alive; when the air gets crisp and the leaves change, it feels like a rebirth for me.” - Heather Zwain

When Heather Zwain steps onto a client’s porch, she sees more than a front door, she sees a story waiting to be told through color, texture and the simple beauty of nature.

As the founder of PUMPKIN & KALE CO., Zwain has turned her lifelong love for design into a business that transforms porches, tablescapes, restaurants, businesses and events, into festive havens filled with charm and nostalgia.

Before launching her seasonal styling concierge business, Zwain built over a decade-long career as the fashion editor and stylist for an upscale lifestyle magazine in Bergen County. Known for her thoughtful eye, unique style, and attention to detail, her work included conceptualizing and producing photo shoots, fashion shows and covers, interviewing and styling celebrities and athletes, and curating monthly editorial features.

Zwain later launched her online lifestyle brand, The Bergen County Bible, celebrating the people, places and businesses that make the county she grew up in, lives in, and loves, so special. After a couple of years, her success and reputation for professionalism and networking presented her with an opportunity to pivot towards a career in private aviation, where she has spent more than five years building relationships with high-net-worth clients and creating personalized experiences on private jet charters and unique sponsorships.

Growing up, Zwain was surrounded by creativity and care. Her mother owned a children’s birthday party business, turning every celebration into something heartfelt and memorable. Holidays and special occasions were never just events, they were experiences. “Nothing was ever for show,” Zwain said. “My birthday parties were so special and creative - they shaped so much of who I am today,” she adds.

Watching her parent’s host with such thoughtfulness left a lasting impression. “It’s how I was raised, and I carry that with me in everything I do.”

For Zwain, autumn has always been her favorite time of year. “It’s when I feel most alive; when the air gets crisp and the leaves change, it feels like a rebirth for me.” Her love for the season runs deep, shaped by childhood memories of her mother and grandmother handmaking every Halloween costume. “It was such an exciting time. Everything felt so magical.”

That love of family and creativity continued into adulthood. Each year, Zwain and her father visit local farms and pick pumpkins, kale and mums for their seasonal displays.

“We have so much fun,” she said. “We decide what will look good on my parents’ porch and dining room table, and what will work for mine.” Last year, before Thanksgiving, she started collecting pumpkins that otherwise would’ve been thrown away from surrounding towns and neighbors, and donated them to an animal sanctuary. “It was such a full circle moment. I love animals and nature, and while feeding pumpkins to cows, I realized this is what lights me up inside – a blend of creativity and giving back. That’s when I knew it was time to start a business that combined my favorite things.”

In July 2025, she officially launched PUMPKIN & KALE CO., rooted in her love for nature, style, family and tradition. Zwain brings intention and care to each arrangement. “Every design for the fall was different. The client sends me a picture of their space, then I sketch out my concept on paper before bringing the vignette to life. I put a lot of thought and energy into every project to make it feel personal and inviting by pairing pumpkins, mums, kale and other natural elements.” Her parents and husband often help with installations, adding to the sense of connection that defines her work.

Following a successful season and client requests, Zwain is expanding into winter styling, channeling the same thoughtfulness into cozy, nostalgic scenes. Her curated vignettes feature natural touches – evergreens, pinecones and branches, layered with soft blankets and pillows to create magazine-worthy displays. “Something that feels like magic – warm and inviting, not competing with the space and never typical.”

Her instinct for noticing the smallest details, a skill that can’t be taught, continues to shape her work. Early in her career, while waiting in the green room just before going on air for a television interview, she spotted a single strand of hair on the host’s jacket. She noticed it throughout multiple segments and, when it was her turn to go on set, she brushed it away. The host thanked her saying, ”I have an entire production crew and no one mentioned it. You see things other people don’t.” That comment stuck with her. “No one else noticed it, but I couldn’t stop seeing it,” Zwain recalled. “It reminded me that the little things always matter.”

For Zwain, every installation is more than just decorations. It is a reflection of heart and heritage, of the creativity passed down through generations and expressed through artful simplicity. Her work celebrates the beauty of nature, the bonds of family and the comfort of home.

PUMPKIN & KALE CO. is a full-service experience. Through her concierge offering, Zwain oversees everything

from design and sourcing to setup and removal. “We live in such an overstimulated world,” she said. “Most people want to do all the things, but sometimes it’s nice to let someone else handle it for you. Your entrance is the first thing you see when you come home. It should make you and your family smile before you even walk inside.”
