Health & Wellness For many of us, this time of year is full of excitement. It presents us with a reset, new horizons, and goals to pursue. But for others, January can be a reminder of failed attempts from years past and the burden of expectation that this year will be different. We approached this issue of Pascack Valley City Lifestyle from a mindset of not supplying quick fixes to check boxes in the short term but valuing what is sustainable over the long haul. We wanted to provide inspiration for making lasting, realistic, long-term improvements to your physical, emotional, and mental health. When it comes to anything in life - business, finance, food, home, and personal health – it’s not what you do some days that move the needle - it’s what you do most days. For better or worse! For instance, taking a vacation every day would be financially and practically unfeasible, but taking a trip a few times a year is doable. Having a beautiful steak dinner with a few cocktails and New York cheesecake every night for dinner isn’t best for your health, but doing so once in a while might be fine! It’s not the sometimes choices we make, it’s the most of the time choices. So plan the vacation and work to establish more regular rest in your work week. Join a fitness community or gym and enjoy that dessert you’ve been wanting to try at Le Carre Café & Patisserie in Hillsdale. It’s not what you do some days - it’s what you do most days that will lead to a more peaceful, fulfilling, and fabulous year. I am originally from Harrington Park in the Northern Valley but was always familiar with Pascack Valley. Montvale is a vibrant town that has really grown over the past decade. I was attracted to open my practice there because of its convenience off the Garden State Parkway. It’s also an easy trip for my New York-based patients.

WHAT LED YOU TO SPECIALIZE IN PELVIC HEALTH AFTER EARNING YOUR DOCTORATE IN PHYSICAL THERAPY? My segue into pelvic health was what I would call a “happy accident.” My passion began in orthopedics and amputee rehabilitation; however, during a routine visit, my gynecologist mentioned that she saw a great need for pelvic floor therapists in the area. I decided to pursue and specialize in this type of therapy, and I’ve been inspired ever since, especially knowing this population is seriously underserved.

WHAT SYMPTOMS AND PAIN CAN YOU ADDRESS? Men, women, and children see us for urinary leakage, constipation, pelvic pain, nighttime urination urge or frequency, pediatric bedwetting, and complex orthopedic issues such as chronic low back, tailbone, or hip pain. Much of our practice is focused on preparing pregnant women for labor and delivery and helping them heal effectively after birth. We also see patients before and after abdominal or pelvic surgeries, including hysterectomy, cesarean section, prostatectomy, hernia, and diastasis recti repair. It’s incredible to me that patients undergoing knee surgery are prescribed 6-8 weeks of physical therapy to aid in their recovery, while many patients are sent home from the hospital following major abdominal surgery with no physical therapy regimen whatsoever! We're here to support those patients to help them experience a quick and successful recovery.

WHAT IS AN EXAMPLE OF A TYPICAL TREATMENT? Typical treatments may include manual therapy, stretches, and specific exercises. We will also develop an individualized home program for continued success outside of treatment hours. Pelvic floor therapists are trained in internal vaginal or rectal assessment and treatment, which is the gold standard for treating and

WHAT ARE YOUR HOPES FOR THE FUTURE OF THE PRACTICE? We aim to educate the community on pelvic health so patients can find the care they need and deserve. We want people to know that help is available for these serious (and often very private) issues. You don’t have to live with discomfort, embarrassment, or pain. We intend to raise the standard of pelvic health and postpartum care. One of the ways we do this is through collaborative relationships with other healthcare professionals such as acupuncturists, mental health therapists, Webster-certified chiropractors, lactation consultants, doulas, sleep consultants, and so on. Mental health has finally risen to the surface of the conversation. Over the years, misconceptions and stigmas have led people to suffer in silence. As awareness regarding diagnoses, treatments, and research improves,

Dr. Jessica McCarthy and her team at Elements Psychological Services provide individualized approaches to compassionate and empowered mental health care for clients of all ages. Their spacious office on Summit Avenue in Montvale offers a team of doctoral-level psychologists who provide neuropsychological assessments and cognitive behavioral therapies. The practice has recently expanded to provide psychotherapy for children as young as two, and they are equipped to assess patients for ADHD and autism and provide families with full support. When a child is experiencing a learning or behavioral challenge, Jessica and her clinicians administer a full assessment to cover areas such as attention, memory, language, and executive functions to make proactive recommendations for improving the

work alongside the parents to show them how to encourage their kids to be more independent while developing the necessary skills in things like language, expression, reasoning, and problem solving.” Jessica’s additional training in neuropsychology is vital in helping her determine how different brain structures can cause the brain to function and learn differently. For example, ADHD diagnosis requires understanding how the brain works because it impacts how one learns and processes information. “This knowledge equips us to provide strategies for young people with an ADHD or autism diagnosis to use their brains effectively,” says Jessica. “For example, some kids may need extended time for testing or a break to stand up and walk around. Jessica remarks that many people refer to conversations with friends as “therapy.” However, she quickly notes that working with a doctoral-level psychologist is much more effective than pouring your heart out to your bestie. “We’re not your friends,” she notes. “It is our job to have the difficult conversations with you that friends will not have because that’s not their role.” A professional psychologist can make an accurate diagnosis and provide a plan to help the patient work through their specific issues. “It’s our job to help in a digestible, helpful, and compassionate way,” says Jessica. “A friend can be there in the storm. Our job is to help you navigate it.”

Arc Fitness specializes in programs for women, while PAD works with men. Founder and owner, John Khanjian tailors all workouts to the client. "We provide conditioning, functional strength workouts, powerlifting, calisthenics, and body weight movements. I try to fill all the modality buckets. We have clients of all ages, most of whom are in their 40s and 50s, and a couple of clients in their 70s!" An alumnus of Don Bosco and Marist College, John always had a passion for fitness, but his career followed a winding path through the years, including working at Don Bosco as a major gifts officer and youth minister. Eventually, he landed in the fitness world. "I started working at CrossFit and Life Time but also had my own trailer and equipment. During the pandemic, when the other gyms were closed, my business took off because people were looking to maintain their fitness. When Life Time reopened and invited me back, I had built my business so much, I didn't return. And here we are!" PAD/ARC's bulk of work is one-onone training, but John also provides small group workouts, company plans, and athletic team services. He also trains the Mahwah and Oakland Fire Departments. John firmly believes in the importance of a man's role in the family unit. "Society tells us we should always strive to be comfortable," he says. "But that's not real life. Sometimes, you must deny your own comfort to better someone else's life. Men need to learn to take care of their families, go to work, and provide for them. I felt called to use the fitness coaching as a vehicle to plant seeds and mentor other guys." “Throughout my own fitness journey, I learned to develop a level of discipline and mental toughness. I realized that when I was pushing through something painful or uncomfortable

in a workout, there was a parallel to real life. There are times in life that are hard or challenging. Danny Rosenthal makes the most of three worlds. Managing a successful business, raising a family, and wedging in time to pursue a rewarding creative outlet as a band member all seem very day-to-day for him. “Each really feeds off the other, and being in the band particularly is a real labor of love.” As owner of DLR Plumbing by day and lead singer of the band After Party by night, Danny further illustrated how each area interacts. “Most of the time I am on the job at DLR, the conversation seems to always turn toward music.”

He met his wife Michelle while performing and has a son and two daughters. Michelle continues to attend most of his shows, made easier by the fact the kids are now a bit older. Danny loves the North Jersey area because of all it has to offer. “I was just up at Mount Fuji restaurant in Hillburn, New York, celebrating my daughter Summer’s 18th birthday. We had a great time.” He lives with his family in the house he grew up in and would not have it any other way.

“’After Party’ began as ‘Bachelor Party’ in 1994, and I hope one day we will be calling ourselves ‘Retirement Party,’” Danny joked. The current lineup was established in 2021. Band members include John Calendrillo, guitars and vocals; Joe Trentacosta, keyboards and vocals; Steve Nadratowski, bass and vocals; and Tony Marchesani on drums to round out the rhythm section. All of the guys have their day jobs. For instance, Tony is a graphic designer. He designed the band’s logo and manages the website and booking calendar. CONTINUED >

Recent gigs at Five Dimes Brewery in Westwood and Shortway’s Barn in Hawthorne were a testament to their commitment to entertain at all costs and ensure everyone has a good time. “Our first show in ’94 was at Shortway’s,” said Danny. “It’s always special when we can play close to home.” Using musical influences such as rock, 80s pop, reggae, funk, disco, and even rap, After Party will surprise you with its diverse song selection. We witnessed a recent performance at Shortway’s. “10th Avenue Freeze Out,” with keyboardist Joe T.

taking lead vocals, brought us back down the shore listening to Bruce. It was not November in North Jersey--at least for those few minutes. The band marched on with The Police’s “Message in a Bottle,” J. Geils’ “Centerfold,” Simple Minds, Toto, and an ambitious Cheap Trick “Surrender,” where each player took lead vocal duties for each verse. It’s not often that you find that every band member can sing. Each is capable of managing lead vocals and knowing when and where to lay back for their place within the harmonies. The set continued with The Cars, Soft Cell, and even 80s hair band, Whitesnake. To end the set, they performed a fun medley, including the best of The Who, Led Zeppelin, Queen, Rush, Kansas, and Journey. The hits came fast, leaving the crowd somewhat exhausted at the first set break with the promise of more to come.
