April - Our Explore Issue! Our April Issue is all about Explore! What that means to everyone can be different. Some may seek adventure and travel, to others explore means getting out in the community and meeting new people or trying new places. It is so important in today’s fast paced world to give ourselves time for exploring, for trying new places and things, for being a beginner, even for getting lost. It is those times that are unstructured and open-ended where the space exists for connections to be made, friendships to be fostered and trust to be built. For our April issue, we took on the theme “explore in the Pascack Valley” and had the opportunity to meet with some amazing businesses and individuals in our community. Starting out close to home, we spoke with Noel Naughton, owner of Leaf Free Home Improvements of Emerson. Noel shared with us why his family-run business has been a fixture in the Pascack Valley for so long. Looking to let your tastebuds do some exploration? Visit Bellissimo in Montvale offering authentic Italian cuisine. This month we were able to visit with owner, Tony Meto, and hear about his restaurant which has been a staple in the community since 2008. It’s time to discover! Have you heard there is a brand-new luxury K9 Resort coming to Emerson. Owner, Austin Yun enlightened us on how their state-of-the-art doggie daycare and boarding facilities are coming to the Pascack Valley to benefit our K9 family members. Looking for an outdoor adventure? Closter Nature Center is 136 acres of protected land right here in our backyard. They offer a litany of activities for kids and adults that want to get involved in our local environment. Check out our feature in this issue to learn more! Our hope is that this issue encourages you to make room for exploration. To prioritize time away from the regular schedule of life. To lose yourself on a trail or in a book. Rave reviews from regular patrons as well as first-time visitors basically all share the same sentiment. The warm atmosphere, excellent selection of Italian dishes, reasonable prices, and prompt, friendly service continually make guests feel as though they are part of a big, Italian family. We spoke to the owner, Tony Meto, to find out more.

WHAT IS YOUR BACKGROUND IN COOKING ITALIAN SPECIALTIES? I have always loved to cook, having learned from my mother and grandmother. I always knew I would one day open a restaurant and share my passion with others.

WHAT MADE YOU WANT TO ESTABLISH AN ITALIAN RESTAURANT IN MONTVALE? I've always wanted to open a restaurant; once this space came available, I knew it was the right spot for me. It's a great location. We love Montvale and being in Bergen County. Being close to Rockland County also brings in many New York guests.

SOME OF YOUR REVIEWS MENTION HOW AUTHENTIC YOUR ITALIAN FOOD IS. TO WHAT CAN YOU ATTRIBUTE YOUR AUTHENTICITY? My family. I learned everything from them— from sauces to main dishes. We still use some of my treasured family recipes in the restaurant today.

WHAT SETS YOU APART FROM OTHER ITALIAN RESTAURANTS? The food at Bellissimo is always fresh and made to order. People come in for specific dishes, and we strive to ensure that the dish is consistently delicious by using only the freshest ingredients. To that point, we also offer Daily Fresh specials. We get produce and seafood delivered daily, so depending upon whatever comes in, we make a special dish that is not on our menu. It could be something like softshell crabs or branzino, served with fresh, seasonal vegetables—it doesn't get any better than that! We also offer daily pasta, fish, and meat specials (steak, short ribs, chicken, etc.). Some people don't even ask for our menu; they only want to hear the specials! CONTINUED >

WHAT MADE YOU WANT TO LOCATE THE K9 RESORT IN EMERSON? This K9 Resort will be my third location after Malvern, Pennsylvania, and Middletown, New York. Living in northern New Jersey for more than 20 years, it is evident to me that our communities need the exceptional services that K9 Resorts provide. Pascack Valley has excellent infrastructure with top-notch schools, but it was missing a safe and reliable home-awayfrom-home for families to send their furry family members on a mini vacation.

I don't think there is any better profession than working with dogs every day. I have two dogs, Sancho and Jelo, and I wasn't satisfied with the existing boarding options for them. It's not easy to pester friends and family members for occasions when I need care for my pets, and I wasn't comfortable with the care that other commercial kennels provide. Once I discovered K9 Resorts, I called the corporate office to become a franchisee. I sold my business in New York City, and here I am!

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF DOGGIE DAYCARE? WHAT'S A TYPICAL DAY LIKE? Daycare provides an outlet to expend excess energy, socialize, exercise, and remain active. Dogs are social animals that need exercise and stimulation, and doggie daycare is the best way to provide both! The Closter Nature Center Association is a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization dedicated to protecting 136 acres in downtown Closter. At its heart is a mission to conserve natural resources, provide educational programs, and elevate recreational experiences to build a greater appreciation for the natural world. We spoke with Marc Gussen, Naturalist/Director, and Aubrie George, Program Director, to find out more.

WHAT PROGRAMS DO YOU HAVE FOR KIDS WHO LOVE NATURE? The Closter Nature Center's children's programs focus on the local environment for children and teens ages four through 17. These are hands-on learning experiences where participants learn the fundamentals of ecology and the interconnectedness between humans and the natural world. During classes, children might hike, dig in the mud, wade in our streams, examine nature through a microscope, discuss the environment, and above all, have fun! Participants learn about sustainability and caring for natural resources in an outdoor classroom and can explore nature as a means of recreation. Classes occur in our rustic cabin and on the trails of our wetland preserve.

WHAT ADULT PROGRAMS DO YOU OFFER? We offer adult lectures and hikes on a variety of topics. This year's programs have included everything

from mushrooms to an introduction to birding to the growing problem with the latest invasive species, the spotted lanternfly.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR FOREST STEWARDSHIP MANAGEMENT PROGRAM We have a very active Forest Stewardship Management Program. Starting in 2015, the Closter Nature Center (CNC) Board of Trustees undertook a long-term project to assess and protect the health of its 136-acre site of forested wetlands. Soon after, a forest stewardship study was conducted by New Jersey Audubon for the CNC, which has served as a baseline for further study and recommendations of care. In addition, we have protected about 30 acres of forest from the degradation of deer browse, giving areas of our woods time to produce seedlings and flowers protected from our voracious deer population.

WHAT ARE SOME FUN THINGS TO DO AT CLOSTER NATURE CENTER? The Closter Nature Center has three miles of marked trails for walking and hiking. Locals can fish (catch and release) in our ponds, explore our forested wetlands and meadows or sit on a bench in the sun. Other activities include lectures, nature photography, bird watching, and group hikes. Organized events, including after-school and summer programs for children, are advertised on our website.
