Health & Wellness For All It’s a new year, and that signifies new beginnings and a fresh start. With how busy life becomes, it is a nice reprieve to be still for a moment and reflect on where we have been, what the past year has taught us, what we want to grow and learn from, and where we want to go from there. The practice of establishing new goals or a resolution for the coming year is something that can help us focus on what is truly a priority. Some of the most popular New Year’s resolutions center around getting healthier and spending more time with the people we cherish. Other goals may be more community focused and revolve around being intentional about finding ways to help people in need. Whatever your goals may be this year, know that the simple act of making a goal is a great first step. We then have to move from simply thinking about doing those things to making a daily decision to act on them. We are starting off the new year with some feature stories that will not disappoint. We heard from Dr. Fung, owner of Precision Dentistry in Old Tappan, to learn why complete dentistry is important to the overall well-being of her patients. Dr. Carol Chu-Peralta, founder and Clinical Director of the Center for Resiliency in Montvale filled us in on how their scientifically-based treatments ensure a therapeutic approach for all patients. Who else Googles everything nowadays? Dr. Sakina Dinani of Synergy Health Advisors in Montvale shares why it is crucial to keep technology in perspective when researching healthcare needs. Lastly, local award-winning culinary professional, Gwynn Galvin is back with her healthy Blueberry Banana Smoothie recipe, which should fit right in with your fitness goals for 2023. First Honorees For 2023 Citizens Of The Year Annouced

Aeon Fitness and Gymnastics in Hillsdale hosted a Handstand Walk for Kids Challenge, supporting life-saving pediatric cancer research. Their competitive team gymnasts, 75 girls and boys, fundraised for participation in the Handstand Walk. Aeon's team athletes walked across the floor for 10 minutes on their hands, tagging their teammates after each lap. The athletes walked an impressive 2.47 miles on their hands, and raised over $21,000 for Memorial Sloan Kettering Kids!

After the revelry of the holidays, January is the perfect time to focus on health and wellness in 2023, and a healthy mouth is essential to overall well-being. We spoke to Dr. Wai Kee Fung to learn how she helps patients of all ages ensure optimal dental health. A graduate of the NYU School of Dentistry, Dr. Fung has over 20 years of experience with advanced training in full mouth reconstruction, TMJ issues, implant dentistry, Invisalign orthodontics, and cosmetic dentistry.

WHAT LED YOU INTO DENTISTRY? I've always had a strong, humanitarian connection to all living creatures. As I approached my teenage years, I was drawn to both the complexities of hand workmanship and the intricacies of science. When I explored the possibilities of dentistry, I was fascinated by the combination of what I might be able to do by applying my passion for creativity and my love for improving the health and well-being of individuals of all ages. I SEE THAT YOU FOCUS ON THE CONCEPT OF

"COMPLETE DENTISTRY." PLEASE EXPLAIN.

"Complete Dentistry" refers to achieving an obtainable goal of optimal oral health in each masticatory system (the functions that help us break down food). Complete Dentistry requires an understanding of every structural part of the head and neck, including your jaw joints, muscles, and teeth to diagnose issues promptly, helping avoid further extensive treatment. In the long run, this can save patients from years of pain, suffering, and excessive costs for dental work.

CAN YOU EXPAND ON SOME OF THE TOOLS OR TECHNOLOGIES YOU USE TO IMPROVE THE "DENTIST EXPERIENCE” FOR YOUR PATIENTS? During the exam, our patients can enjoy a pampering massage in one of our massage dental chairs. We have the latest scan technology which allows us to see three-dimensional views of the jaws for implants, joints, and airways. Our Tek-scan enables us to visualize a computer image of the patient's bite, which is useful in full-mouth

reconstructions, implant restoration, and TMJ appliance adjustments. Our dental scan replaces impressions and delivers products such as crowns and dentures in half the time of conventional dental procedures. We perform temperature checks and use high-suction air purifiers with UV light sterilization to absorb aerosols and maintain clean airflow in compliance with COVID safety protocols.

AS A FAMILY-FOCUSED PRACTICE, HOW DO YOU LAY OUT A PLAN OF CARE BEGINNING FROM SMALL CHILDREN THROUGH ADULTHOOD? Certain growth and development stages are important to observe and examine for early diagnosis and treatment. We recommend scheduling your child's first dental visit before age two. This appointment includes a counseling session with the parent regarding oral health and disease prevention and provides guidance on how to avoid future dental problems. As a child grows and permanent teeth come in, we check for permanent tooth bulbs, the growth pattern of the jaws, and the interrelationships of the teeth. Tracking the growth of the mouth and making simple corrective changes can potentially avoiding extensive orthodontic work later in life. Adults may experience the shifting of jaws and teeth, varying joint positions, the movement of teeth, and muscle tightness. When a specific issue is diagnosed, the patient is advised accordingly regarding appropriate interventions.

WHAT ARE OTHER CONDITIONS THAT MAY WARRANT A DENTAL APPOINTMENT? Patients often seek assistance from their primary care physician, ENT, or neurologist for conditions related to the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). Symptoms such as ear, neck, and/or jaw pain, uncontrollable muscle tightness, and headaches/migraines may originate with TMJ issues. We can address these issues to inhibit further deterioration and the need for future surgeries.

Certain growth and development stages are important to observe and examine for early diagnosis and treatment. WHAT ARE THE KEY “NON-NEGOTIABLES” TO A HEALTHY MOUTH? I recommend brushing your teeth three times a day, especially after meals. This is a highly effective strategy for preventing dental diseases such as cavities and gum infections. Flossing is important to clean between teeth. I also recommend regularly scheduled dental visits.

HOW DO YOU GIVE BACK TO THE COMMUNITY THROUGH DENTISTRY? Our practice enjoys active involvement in giving back to the community in various contexts. We donate dental

treatments to eligible individuals at our office in Old Tappan through Lifeline Network, a program sponsored by the New Jersey Dental Association in conjunction with the State of New Jersey. We also offer continuous support to our Old Tappan Senior citizens. Today’s dentistry makes it easier and more painless to keep your teeth healthy for a lifetime. Dr. Fung and her team are passionate about serving the community and helping their patients achieve optimal dental health.

Center for Resiliency When life blindsides us with an unexpected loss, death, divorce, injury, or natural disaster, it’s likely we will experience symptoms of trauma. Unhealed trauma impacts our beliefs about ourselves, the world, our behaviors, and our lives regardless of how it happens. Dr. Carol Chu-Peralta works with her patients to help them overcome the trauma, anxiety, anger, and depression that a traumatic event can bring.

With a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Fairleigh Dickinson University, Dr. ChuPeralta understood trauma first-hand through the lens of her parents’ experience as they emigrated to the United States. “When I began my clinical training, my first case was a trauma case,” she says. I became interested in trauma across the spectrum and began requesting trauma cases throughout my externships and internship.”

Although Dr. Chu-Peralta specializes in trauma cases, a unique balance must be achieved when working in that area of practice. “It is important to equally weigh a specialization with general treatment because no one is one-dimensional,’” she says. “Trauma may walk through the door, but that is usually not the only thing people bring with them. Sometimes you have to peel back the layers to discover the cause of the symptoms.” Dr. Chu-Peralta and her team’s holistic approach helps her patients to build the skills that will help them deal with issues such as anxiety, depression, emotional abuse, stress, and loss using therapies that have been researched and proven to be effective. They take their patient’s values and beliefs into consideration and then integrate their clinical expertise into the treatment plan. “We see a lot of trauma, depression, and anxiety in our practice,” says Carol. Since COVID struck, we have had an abrupt increase in children and adolescent cases. We saw kids struggling with social withdrawal, anger issues, and frustration. We also saw an uptick in medical provider burnout. Medical professionals had to perform throughout the pandemic at superhero status and then transition back to their own personal roles at home. It was very taxing on them. Now that the pandemic has receded, we are seeing more adults who had prioritized their children for so long that they neglected their own mental health.”

If you have a loved one you suspect needs help, Dr. Chu-Peralta suggests being mindful of validating their emotions and listening to them compassionately. Present the option to speak to a mental health professional in the most non-judgmental way possible. “Speaking to a provider adds another member to your social support team,” says Carol. “Let your loved one know that you will stay by their side regardless of whether they speak to a professional. If they are resistant to seeing a therapist, consider speaking to someone on your own who can help you navigate the situation and relieve some of your own personal stress. Strike the balance of support carefully so as not to enable their unhealthy behavior.” Dr. Chu-Peralta’s group practice offers both in-person and telehealth appointments. “All of our treatment is driven by compassion. We are genuinely interested in the people who walk through our doors, and we work hard to ensure a warm and compassionate environment. That makes a world of difference when it comes to therapy—a connection is important. Otherwise, why would you listen?” Dr. Chu-Peralta enjoys being involved in the local community and playing an active role as a volunteer at her children’s schools to share the message of mental health awareness. “I live in this community, and I want to be a resource for it!”

Today’s technology is omnipresent in everything that we do. From virtual education to online shopping, we’re never far from the screen or the keyboard. Can you imagine traveling out of state without the internet or your smartphone to provide directions, make calls, or find the nearest restaurant? We are dependent on the internet throughout all aspects of life--even healthcare. How many of us self-diagnose via Google when we aren’t feeling well? Internet searches may give us some credible information, but it is essential to maintain balance when researching our health online. Algorithms take precedence on the internet, so keep everything in perspective. Here are some tips to keep in mind: • Search engines love to finish your sentences. When you start typing in “abdominal pain,” you will probably be pointed toward articles on pregnancy, COVID, HIV, cancer, and so forth. In Google’s eagerness to finish your thoughts, arbitrary suggestions will pop up—so don’t panic. Feel free to giggle and move on.

• Search engines use web “crawlers” that scour websites for search words and new content. Accuracy is not a factor on the list of ranking criteria. • Verify the credibility of authors and sources. Search engines do not verify the accuracy of the data results from your search. Remember that information can be misconstrued or taken out of context by the writer. • Misunderstanding or mistranslation can lead to overreacting regarding a minor issue or, worse, dismissing important symptoms that need further investigation. • Refer to time-honored, credible hospital and medical organizations that publish content. The Mayo Clinic, Medline, and the NIH are a few great sources. Dr. Sakina Dinani, Chief Medical Physician at Synergy Health Advisors in New Jersey, advises, “Diagnosis is not the outcome of an algorithm. It’s a clinical deduction based on years of clinical education and experience shaped by the individual physician’s ability to know the nuances of illness and wellness. Google is an algorithm and does not compare in the least.” The lesson here is, Google if you must. Online research has its place but doesn’t replace a well-established, communicative physician-patient partnership. A professionally-licensed medical team gets to know patients through in-depth consultations and understanding family medical histories, personal medical journeys, and the patient’s own unique circumstances. Having an experienced and compassionate physician by your side is the key to a successful personalized care plan. “Many factors play a part in an accurate diagnosis, including patient experience, the context of the symptoms, and diagnostic testing,” says Dr. Dinani. “Healthcare should be built upon a personal connection between the physician and patient.
