The holidays are here, and as the spirit of the season is among us, we often try to replicate what made the season feel so magical to us in our youth. The traditions we set for our own families often mirror some of what we experienced as a child, whether they are the smells, the sounds, the lights, the holiday activities, or a combination of everything that reflects it best. For me, it has always been Christmas Eve. My family has the holiday tradition of celebrating The Feast of the Seven Fishes. Walking into my grandmother’s house was always a delight as a kid. From the smells to the tastes, that time has always been a special night that my family continues to cherish. In this issue, we had the honor of getting a glimpse into Antoinette Gangi’s Italian Kitchen, who shares how she prepares for her family’s Feast on Christmas Eve. This month, we wanted to highlight the magic of the season and how people and organizations in the Pascack Valley help to spread holiday cheer—and ways you can help, too! While this season can be beautiful for some, it can be painful and lonely for others, especially those who have recently lost a loved one. In the true spirit of the season, let’s take care of those in our community who need assistance or are alone. My hope for you this season is that you feel love and peace and that we all remember to take care of each other, extending grace, empathy, and love. Happy Holidays!

Houndstown is unleashing all kinds of joy this holiday season. The dog boarding and daycare facility is busy planning a “furry” little Christmas "Pawty" on Wednesday, December 20 to spread love and joy to shelter pups waiting for their forever home. “We are partnering with Ramapo Bergen Animal Refuge in Oakland,” says manager, Perrin DeFrietas, "and hoping that our party pups will help by donating much-needed items for the shelter—things like food, treats, blankets, and bedding.” Houndstown provides top-notch care and lots of interactive play for dogs of all breeds and sizes. Along with boarding and doggie daycare, once enrolled, you can even drop off your pooch for a playdate when he needs to expend a little energy (a "pawfect" strategy prior to holiday entertaining at home)!

“All dogs are grouped by their size and temperament, and they get to play all day in one of our five indoor temperature-controlled playrooms or our outdoor playroom,” says Perrin. “New dogs make an appointment for a free evaluation to make sure the facility is a good fit. Then, they receive a complimentary visit to try it out and get acclimated to the environment.” If you plan on using Houndstown’s boarding facilities for vacation or holiday travel, the complimentary visit would be used prior to your pet’s first boarding reservation. “We always want to ensure the dogs are happy and comfortable,” says Perrin. Since opening three years ago, Houndstown has added some new services, including bathing, ear cleaning, tooth brushing, and nail clipping. CHANGING A CHILD’S STORY FOR THE BETTER

Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) volunteers know how to get the real story. Volunteers with CASA of Bergen County positively impact the lives of abused or neglected children by serving as their voice in the courtroom and striving to represent the best interest of each child. They collaborate with professionals from various fields to ensure judges have the facts and information they need to make informed decisions. Jennifer Heit has volunteered as a CASA advocate for over two years, and now also serves as the non-profit's business development manager. Throughout her involvement with the association, she has become adept at getting the full picture regarding the well-being of the children she advocates for. "We collaborate with the family and other professionals to get a 360-degree view of the child's life," says Jennifer. "This includes physical and mental health status, education, understanding their placement and living situation, and helping biological parents to engage in a healthier relationship with the child."
Although abuse and neglect can happen regardless of a family's income, Jennifer notes that CASA of Bergen County often works with the poorest of the poor who do not understand or have access to any of the services they may be entitled to. "Many of our cases involve homeless families," she says. "They may not have a car or means of transportation. Language barriers and internet access may also be a challenge. It makes it extremely difficult for them to find a job or go to school." An advocate's connections in these cases are far-reaching. Once assigned to a child or group of siblings, they see the case through until the child is in permanent placement—which can sometimes take several years. Many of the adults these children rely on may come and go. However, a CASA advocate provides consistency in their lives. "These children undergo a lot of change. They may have various social workers, guardians, foster parents, or therapists over the years. But their assigned CASA advocate sees them through to the closure of their case," says Jennifer. After a full vetting, interview, background check, and specialized training, CASA volunteers gather and compile information from their birds-eye view of their assigned case. They speak with everyone involved in the child's life and then write a thorough report to paint the picture for the courts. "Case workers are like reporters," says Jennifer. "We try to figure out the whole story." Last year, CASA of Bergen County, a 501(c) (3), served 127 children with 94 advocates who donated a total of 5500 hours throughout the process. CASA also continues to empower young adults who age out of the foster program with events that connect them with educational opportunities, banks, cell phone companies, etc.
"This helps them to gain independence as they age out," says Jennifer. This holiday season, CASA is holding a holiday drive to provide diapers, formula, toys, warm coats, socks, gloves, and hats to the children and families they work with. "Inflation and housing costs have gone up, and more families need assistance purchasing toys, gifts, and just managing the cost of living," notes Jennifer. CASA is also seeking volunteers interested in making a difference in a child's life. The group is especially interested in adding diversity to their team, including Hispanic, Black, and male volunteer candidates. "I wanted to do something meaningful and give back to the community," says Jennifer. It's about connecting with the broader community and trying to make a difference in a child's life who may not otherwise have much of a chance. I can get that 360-degree view and pull the parties together in a way that others can't—it makes a difference for everyone involved." Anne Frank said, "How wonderful it is that nobody need wait a single moment before starting to improve the world." The administration, staff, and students of Saint Joseph Regional High School are certainly not waiting "a single moment" to prepare young men for a life of service and leadership through the foundation of community service. Over 460 young men from 130 towns create a diverse geographical and socio-economic footprint. "Not all students are Catholic, so we emphasize that we can worship in liturgy and at mass as well as through service," says Michael Bruno, principal. The school's three pillars of character speak for themselves: "Think, Lead, Serve," and the student body learns firsthand that serving others is as beneficial to the giver as it is to the recipient. Giving back is infused into every aspect of student life, and all students fulfill a requirement to volunteer ten hours of service. "That's just the beginning," says Michael. "We have many students who go far in excess of the minimum." An alumnus himself, he has been the principal for eight years, having
graduated in 2005. "Forty percent of our faculty and coaching staff are alumni," he says. "It's truly a blessing to have the ability to have an impact on students in a place that has had so much impact on own life." "We don't want to inundate our students with a heavy commitment," says Jeannie Podest, Campus Minister. "Our goal is to introduce them to a variety of different opportunities. Many have no idea that they can make a difference." Students are encouraged to contemplate why their acts were meaningful, who they helped, and the impact of their involvement. "It's not just checking a box--we want to foster that mindset to Think, Lead, and Serve," states Michael. Once a month the school organizes "Sandwich Club," a sandwich-building assembly line that benefits a Park Ridge food bank. "We had 52 boys join us to make sandwiches," says Jeannie. "We always make it a point to talk with them about what they were doing and why. They need to see that even here in Bergen County, there is a profound need—people lose their jobs, single moms need assistance, and so on. It really seemed to have an effect on them."

Leadership and service are essential throughout other aspects of student life, too. Athletic coaches and directors get their teams involved in campus clean-ups and initiatives, including a breast cancer "pink out" in which students created pink t-shirts and sold them at games, with all proceeds donated to breast cancer awareness groups. The music department shares its talents by visiting various senior living and daycare facilities during the holidays for Christmas caroling. Students enjoy delivering beautiful music with a healthy helping of holiday spirit to delight these different populations. "Giving shows how much we care as a community," says sophomore Christoper Pinto-Spiegel. "It feels especially good when we visibly represent St. Joe's by wearing our St. Joe's gear. St. Joe's students focus on giving back, and that's impactful. We are willing to give without any personal benefit, and this morality becomes a standard. It's a unique and rewarding experience." Today's students have the privilege of witnessing the legacy of their predecessors at the school. A recent gift from the class of 1969 funded the enhancement of the school's student center, providing a comfortable lounge for after-school socializing. The center is now a safe, fun place for students to gather and unwind with television screens, ping pong, and video games. Hillary Barnett, communications manager, acknowledges that community service and giving back has always been a part of student life. "We continually have opportunities for service, including dressdown fundraising days, food drives, and gift drives. Giving is who we are." Principal Bruno sums it up: "We are all on the same team. The Good Life Gift Boutique elicits a smile the moment you walk through the door. Owner Nancy Norton likes it that way. The clothing and gift boutique just celebrated its grand opening in October—and it’s certainly worth a visit (or two!) for your holiday shopping because not only will you find those perfect gifts, but you may leave with a little more bounce in your step. “I want shopping here to be a fun, feel-good experience,” says Nancy. The orange color gracing the interior walls and warm-hearted messaging throughout are spirit-lifters, for sure. Perhaps that warmth comes from the store’s original location “down the shore” in Long Beach Island. After a successful professional career in marketing research, Nancy grew tired of the business travel that accompanied her position. “I was so done with traveling,” she said. “And I decided I wanted to open a store. The daunting ride down the Parkway each week was the determining factor in searching out a new store location in Bergen County and eventually settling in at 271 Westwood Avenue in Westwood. “I looked in Wyckoff, Ridgewood, Franklin Lakes, and Allendale and found this space in Westwood. I fell in love with the town. Every night on my way home, I see people strolling down the street, holding hands--along with their dogs and kids. It’s like a Hallmark commercial,” she laughs. Nancy is appreciative of how the town welcomed her business. “I came to realize that Pascack Valley is truly a community which encompasses all of the neighboring towns. I’m really glad I chose this spot.” The store’s uniqueness is a salute to Nancy’s years of experience in curating collections that appeal to all age groups. “I try to cater to multigenerational interests,” she says. “My goal is to carry fashion, gifts, and home décor items so that people can come in and buy a variety of wonderful items.” “The clothing lines include apparel I would wear myself,” she notes. “I get quite a bit from Canada because I love their sense of style and fashion—and I get sweaters from Australia. They are super soft! The store’s Soruka accessory line from Barcelona features purses, wallets, and boots made from colorful scraps of leather that would otherwise be discarded. “They’re colorful and fun,” Nancy adds. The Good Life also carries children’s gifts and books promoting mindfulness, gratitude, and positive thinking. “I started a foundation to help kids develop mindfulness practices in schools,” says Nancy. “These are essential skills that they can use throughout their lives.” Kindness and gratitude, softness and energy, color, and light resonate throughout the shop—it’s definitely worth a stop whenever you’re in downtown Westwood. Roasted Calamari and Cherry Tomatoes Italian Seafood Salad

F E ATU R E D R E C I P E - M U S S E L S M A R I N A R A Mussels Marinara
Prep Time: 15 Minutes | Cook Time: 15 Minutes | Serves: 4-6 People
INGREDIENTS: • • • • •
2 pounds of mussels cleaned 6 cloves of garlic sliced 1/2 cup dry white wine 1/4 teaspoon hot red pepper flakes 1 28 oz can of San Marzano tomatoes (crushed by hand) • 1 8 oz can of Hunts tomato sauce • 1/4 cup olive oil
• 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt • 1 tablespoon dried oregano or fresh oregano • 1 teaspoon garlic powder • 1 cup of boiled pasta water • Pinch of red pepper flakes (optional) • Salt and pepper to taste
DIRECTIONS: Clean the mussels, remove beards and scrub clean. IMPORTANT: DISCARD ANY MUSSELS THAT OPEN BEFORE COOKING Begin by crushing tomatoes by hand and set aside. In a large wide pan add olive oil, fresh oregano, salt & pepper, garlic powder, sauté the garlic over medium heat. Once the garlic turns golden (about 2 minutes), add the red pepper flakes. Turn heat down to medium and add San Marzano tomatoes, and stir the tomato sauce and let simmer for 5-10 minutes. Add the cleaned mussels mixed into the sauce and cover, add white wine and simmer for 5 minutes. The mussels should all open within a few minutes. After 5 minutes discard any mussels that have not opened, add salt and pepper to taste. Stir and serve with crusty Italian bread NOTE: MUSSELS CAN BE SERVED AS AN APPETIZER OR SERVED OVER ANY PASTA OF YOUR CHOICE

Tips for creating the perfect board: • Start with the larger items first and build around those. If you are using jars on the board, place those first. • Be sure to have enough to fill the space. it is best to overfill so that the board doesn’t look sparse. Stack, stack and stack some more. • Use a variety of colors and textures when choosing the foods you want to use. Pick cheese with color and patterns, fruits and veggies that come in a variety of textures and colors and a protein that can make a statement. • Be sure to place similar colors in away from each other to help give symmetry.

Place the jars of sauces and olives on the board first. Next place the cheeses on opposing sides. Add meats and fruits next. Layer in crackers, nuts and seeds and fill in any spots with extra nuts. Use fresh Rosemary or fresh greenery to add wreath accent in the center of the charcuterie board. Garnish with fresh cranberries.

The annual City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is in its 4th year. Last holiday season we gave away over $300,000 to help 116 individuals and families in need, but we need your help to make it happen again this year. With nominations flooding in from community members and leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you, we were able to reach people who might otherwise go unnoticed. Perhaps you know of a single parent struggling to provide for their family, an elderly person who has experienced loss, someone enduring a health issue, a co-worker suffering a sudden, unexpected tragedy or a neighbor with a financial hardship who has fallen between the cracks of getting assistance. Chances are you know someone with a specific need, even if no one else does. “We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them during this holiday season.” “We believe God has blessed our company with continued success, so we in turn want to be a blessing to others,” Matthew Perry, President of City Lifestyle adds.
