Be Thankful In this season of giving thanks, we often reflect on the many blessings in our lives. The true spirit of Thanksgiving encourages the conscious expression of gratitude. Its focus is spending time with those that you love and encourages giving back in a meaningful way. While ambition, competition, and slaying goals can be very healthy, forgetting to place importance on being present, enjoying the ride, and appreciating those around us can leave us missing out on what truly matters. We’ll never be content if we look to others, possessions, or titles for fulfillment. True contentment comes from within, and by becoming that person we are meant to be! I am so thankful to our community for the opportunity I am afforded each month to share stories about the special people who make our area so amazing. I am motivated and encouraged by the incredible business owners and community members of the Pascack Valley whom I am privileged to meet and work with each day. Your stories and missions inspire greatness and make our area a wonderful place to live. My family and I are lucky to be a part of this community and the success we foster here. It is an important time of year to pause and thank all who have impacted our lives in big and small ways. I hope you take this opportunity to look around and consider all you have to be thankful for--not just at home or work--but also the neighbors, friends, mentors, and leaders in our community. She began taking lessons at a young age, studying a variety of styles, including jazz, salsa, and musical theater. However, while attending Syracuse University, she fell in love with ballroom dancing, which led her to join multiple dance teams where she excelled in both competitions and choreography. In 2012, Nikki became a professional certified instructor at Fred Astaire Dance Studio in Montville-and never looked back. She and her husband, Jaime, are now the owners/operators of the Fred Astaire Dance Studio in Oradell.

Born in the Dominican Republic, Nikki and Jaime are fluent in Spanish and English, opening doors for students whose first language is Spanish. "Being able to communicate effectively makes everyone more comfortable if they are nervous their first time," says Nikki. Nikki and Jaime work with every age group, too. "I have a 4-year-old and a 94-year-old," laughs Nikki. "And there are inherent benefits for each age group. Dance helps build confidence in kids, provides social interaction, and improves quality of life. And, for the older population, it's an incredible activity. It's not high impact, so it's easy on the joints and promotes flexibility, agility, and balance while delivering a nice cardio workout." The professional instructors at the studio can take on students of every ability and accommodate any injuries or conditions. Nikki notes that dance also helps improve post-surgical mobility and conditions such as vertigo. Matching movement and technique to music that is loved and meaningful to a student helps enrich the emotional side of learning to dance, so students are invited to bring along their favorite music. "Dance changes lives," states Nikki. "I would advise all future students not to wait to get started. You are never too old or too young to dance. U.S. Congressman Josh Gottheimer (NJ-5) recently honored local life-saving first responders, veterans, volunteers, community leaders, and residents during his Fifth District Hometown Heroes Ceremony, held at the Hackensack Performing Arts Center. Gottheimer honored more than 25 residents as Fifth District Hometown Heroes to acknowledge their dedication to helping improve the lives of their neighbors, families, and communities. Among those honored were ten members of the Pascack Valley community. “We are lucky to have so many unsung heroes in our communities here today, whose quiet power of service goes on every day without the recognition they truly deserve. They just do it because they care. Today is their day. Without the people we are recognizing today, our communities would not be as strong as they are, and North Jersey would not be the great place that it is,” said Congressman Gottheimer. They all come from different walks of life, but share an idea that is particularly special: they embody our Jersey Values and make our community such a special place to live, work, and raise a family. Robert Silvestri, Hillsdale — Bob was working in Manhattan on 9/11, after the second plane struck, he immediately told everyone in his office to go home, but just as Bob left his office, the first tower collapsed. He was in a stampede of smoke and people fleeing North when he heard a cry for help. While Bob was running through the smoke, he heard a woman yelling “my baby, my baby” and while everyone was running by, Bob turned around to help. He wasn’t able to see the woman, but he was able to hear her. He dropped to the ground to get under the smoke and increase his visibility. Bob miraculously found the baby wrapped in a blue blanket on the floor. After finding the baby, Bob called out to the woman to keep yelling so he could find her, too. Finally reuniting them together, he led them out of the smoke and to an FBI Agent who took them to safety. Bob filled up his car with strangers and drove them over the George Washington Bridge on his way home.

Mary Cerrati Westwood

Mary Cerrati, Westwood — 93-year-old Mary Cerrati has worked as president and chaplain of the Westwood Senior Fellowship for the last eight years—helping organize trips, parties, luncheons, and well visits for its 75 members with the goal of keeping our seniors engaged, involved, and active. Mary is also a part of the Board of Directors at the St. Andrews Church 50 Plus Club, helping serve the social and spiritual needs of community members aged 50 and up. Five years ago, she was appointed by the mayor and council to the Borough of Westwood Senior Advisory Committee to help advocate for seniors. For nearly 20 years, Mary has been a member and board member of the Woman’s Club of Westwood—a nonprofit club that supports the enrichment of the community. Mary has also spent six years in the Westwood School System as a teacher’s aide and more than 40 years in the local VFW, serving as vice president for 12 years and president for four years.

Curt Schleier River Vale

Curt Schleier, River Vale — Curt is an EMT and has been an active member of the River Vale volunteer ambulance corps for 50 years. Before his work in North Jersey, Curt served in the New York Air National Guard. Now, Curt has become a key component of the River Vale volunteer ambulance corps and is regularly one of a few members that ride during the day, making his work crucial to the safety of his community. He rides on Thursdays and the River Vale Ambulance Corps is one of the only ambulance corps in service during the day on Thursday. Curt also helps provide mutual aid to seven surrounding towns, meaning he helps protect thousands of residents—he’s even had a CPR save. Curt is also a member of the Board of Directors of the ambulance corps, has served as president, and is currently serving as vice president.

Frances Yates, Westwood — Frances formed the Flood Solutions Group which is made up of local flood-impacted residents to advocate for necessary changes and legislation to find solutions for families and municipalities. She’s been on the Board of Trustees at the Dr. Goldberg Child Care Center in Westwood, volunteered as a Girl Scout Leader for the River Vale troop, and was a Former Westwood Brookside School President. She even founded a nonprofit for concerned citizens of Westwood and Hillside which has secured $1 million dollars in funding from county, state, and federal investments to renovate multiple Westwood bridges along the Pascack Brook. After Hurricane Sandy, she opened a soup kitchen and warming center, securing donated food from local businesses and residents. Her efforts earned her the Bergen County Superstorm Sandy Outstanding Service Award. She’s also delivered food to the needy throughout Bergen and Passaic Counties for more than 25 years.

Matt Libien has a knack for keeping himself busy. The married father of three young adult sons lives in Tenafly and is a managing director at Wells Fargo in Paramus. A graduate of Boston University, Matt held various positions in financial firms, including Paine Webber, Smith Barney, and Wachovia (eventually merging with Wells Fargo). Matt has a unique expertise in helping people and charitable organizations achieve their long-term goals—sometimes with financial planning expertise, other times with good, old-fashioned hands-on volunteerism. Over the years, he has coached his share of children’s sports teams and has gotten involved with various charitable non-profits along the way. He serves on the board of directors for the Community Chest, is a member and past president of the Fort Lee Rotary Club, and is a trustee of the Tenafly Educational Foundation. He is also a former board member and past treasurer of Temple Sinai of Bergen County in Tenafly.

Matt recently ran a golf outing fundraising event at the Edgewood Country Club in River Vale for the Community Chest. “The Community Chest is an umbrella charity which provides grants for other non-profits,” says Matt. “They also run nutrition-education programs in Englewood and offer continuing education for employees of non-profits.” A networking contact introduced Matt to the Tenafly Educational Foundation, and he was invited to join before he even had kids in the school system. “That experience helped me to understand what’s going on in the schools,” says Matt. “The foundation raises money to provide grants for teachers to integrate tools and programs that are not normally funded by the state, such as iPads, drafting tables, or supplies to help enhance musical education, for example.” Matt’s comprehensive community service history may have originated from growing up as a Boy Scout and eventually achieving Eagle Scout status as a teenager. “I was always doing volunteer and service projects,” he says. I was taught to help people and have always observed the Jewish concept, ‘tikkun olam,’ which translates to ‘repairing the world’--helping the world one step at a time. It’s always been a part of who I am.” While in high school, he was introduced to the Rotary Club when he joined the Rotary’s Interact Club. He witnessed the outreach of the Rotary’s partnership with the Gift of Life organization, which brings children from around the world to the U.S. for lifesaving heart surgeries. It has a lasting effect on him. “Later in life, when someone invited me to visit the Rotary Club, I was already familiar with their good works. I eventually became president of that chapter,” he says. As a certified financial planner, Matt works with multigenerational families, large net-worth clients, and small to medium-sized companies, providing investment, insurance, stock option, and retirement planning strategies. He also helps manage funding reserves for various homeowner associations. It’s interesting to note how Matt’s passion for making a difference also comes through in his day-to-day profession. “Managing large amounts of money is another aspect of how I like to help people,” he says. “Whether people invest to reach a goal to help their family or to support a charity, it’s the same thing,” says Matt. “I enjoy making it possible for people and organizations to achieve that specific goal because it’s not always about dollars and sense. It’s about the big picture.”

The holidays are a joyous and magical time of year! They grace us with the time-honored traditions of decorating our homes, gift-giving, and embracing our family and friends. As soon as November rolls around, the thought of it all stresses us out. Wouldn’t it be nice to put a plan in place and get organized? Waiting for the last minute is never a good thing. Whether your checklist includes purchasing gifts, updating your holiday décor, or replacing your broken gravy boat, getting a head start in November by creating a to-do list will provide you with a solid plan and greater clarity. Below are several suggestions to get you started. Start shopping in stores and online in November, so you have enough time to find the perfect gifts. Make your list, including teachers, work friends, neighbors, and relatives. If you’re unsure what to buy someone, gift cards are the answer. Everyone appreciates an Amazon card. Why stress yourself out?! Be prepared to climb the steps up to the attic or down to the basement for your holiday decorations and supplies, and go through them as soon as possible. Check and replace lights if needed. You may want to buy extra batteries and consider shopping for new decorations to keep your themes vibrant and current. Over the years, artificial greens can get sad-looking. Be sure to replace them to freshen things up. Do you plan on entertaining? Go through your platters, glasses, and dishes and replace anything cracked or chipped. Did you run short of pots and plans last year? You may want to buy some additional cookware. Tablecloths, candles, and home décor also add to the ambiance, so make sure you have what you need.

If your kitchen is not organized, now is the time to get it done. It will make your holiday entertaining run much more smoothly. Declutter your home by taking a critical look to see what areas have unused or unnecessary “stuff” in them. It is a daunting task if left to the last minute–and it usually results in things getting stuffed into closets and lost. Instead, take a trash bag, set a timer for 20 minutes each day, and get it done! No matter what area you decide to tackle, starting early is the key to getting organized for the holidays. The critical thing to remember is that everything takes longer than you think. Although Mike Gorman had a successful career working in communications for NYC advertising agencies, his inner entrepreneur called out to him to establish a company on his own. After thoroughly investigating the possibilities, Mike’s desire to find an economy-proof, recession-proof industry with a mission of helping the community led him to open Junkluggers of Northern New Jersey. “We help homeowners and business owners get rid of unwanted items,” says Mike. “What sets us apart from our competition is our purpose of finding a second home for everything we take away. By 2025, our goal is that 90% of what we collect will be reused rather than brought to a landfill.

When a Junkluggers truck arrives at the job, the homeowner’s part of the project is complete because their staff has the tools, skills, and trucks needed to provide easy, stress-free junk removal solutions. “We pull up in our container truck, and calculate the cost based on the volume of the truck,” says Mike. The homeowner lets us know what they want removed, and we take care of it all with white glove service. The container stays on the truck, sparing your driveway from the damage caused by a dumpster, and we are in and out in one day.” That’s music to the ears of any homeowner or business owner who needs to clean up and clear out a room, office, or entire building. The added benefit is that Junkluggers will clear out your space and make a point to find a new home for most of the items collected, delivering community service and environmental sustainability by the truckload.

“We work with several non-profit organizations,” says Mike. “For example, we work closely with the 9/11 Foundation, which focuses on collecting medical equipment, wheelchairs, walkers, and various items that help people with disabilities. Everything gets sorted in our warehouse, and allocated to different charities.” Junkluggers also collects housewares for the Breast Cancer Foundation and furniture for Habitat for Humanity, Goodwill, and the Salvation Army. “It’s a privilege to be a part of redistributing items to families in need,” Mike notes. The company also works closely with shelters and social workers to help families displaced due to fire or a home disaster. “The State may provide them an unfurnished apartment,” says Mike, “so, the entire family may be sleeping on the floor. The local shelter will forward a list of needed items, and we load the truck and deliver it directly to the person or family in need. CONTINUED >

It’s amazing how many distressed or underprivileged families are thrilled to have these things. Sometimes, my delivery guys get hugs from grateful recipients, too!” Customers have the assurance of a clean home and a job well done and the knowledge that their donated items are being put to good use serving other families. The Junkluggers team even completes donation receipts and then forwards them to the homeowner, so they receive the tax deduction, too!

Robert A. Kayal, M.D., Founder, President & CEO of Kayal Orthopaedic Center, had always wanted to be a physician—and orthopedics was the specialty he knew he wanted to pursue. “It’s one of the only medical disciplines that offers immediate gratification--orthopedics fixes things! “Now we bring high caliber orthopedic services to Westwood, such as the MAKO robotic arm-assisted total hip and knee replacement surgeries,” says Dr. Kayal. This passion for community service goes even deeper for Robert Kayal, M.D., who generously shares his time and talents with our local police departments. Dr. Kayal doubles down on giving back to the law enforcement community with his unwavering commitment to supporting northern New Jersey and Rockland County police departments by providing concierge medical services to officers and their families. This includes providing immediate appointments and care that accommodates the challenges of long shifts, required overtime work, emergent situations, and having unconventional days and times “off.” Dr. Kayal has hired two former law enforcement officers who help by serving as liaisons between the medical practice and the police. Sgt. a festive pairing The age-old question, “What wine goes with turkey?” is answered. ARTICLE BY MARY ABEL

C ULIN A RY C R E AT ION S | F OOD + BE VE RAGE

It’s a question heard every year about this time: “What are the best wines to serve with Thanksgiving dinner?” “In my early days in the wine business, the answer was pretty cut and dried because it was all based on the assumption that you had a turkey that came out of the oven that was dry, and so you’re almost guaranteed to need something with a little bit of sweetness to it to help balance that out,” James Lewis says. James is a sommelier who has been in the wine business for more than 26 years. “I’d recommend a sweet or off-dry Riesling or Gewürztraminer. Something that will help with that dry meat that you’re about to choke down.” But now, with all the ways people are preparing the big bird, he says that conversation has become a lot more interesting and fun. “People are frying turkeys, which come out really moist and delicious. They’re smoking turkeys and they’re doing them on the grill,” James says. “Now, when I’m asked that question, I always ask how the turkey is going to be cooked because any given preparation is going to call for something a little bit different. “If you’re deep frying it, it’s going to come out very moist with a fair bit of fat, so you need something that’s going to cut through that. So you can go with a dry white, you can do a dry Riesling, or you could try a French Chardonnay, which typically doesn’t have that big, rich mouthfeel that California Chardonnay would have. It’s crisper and cleaner with high acidity.” For those who prefer red wines, James says that a fried or smoked turkey can handle something a bit bolder and full-bodied. “Try something like a Pinot Noir. It’s not at all heavyhanded. When I’m talking about red wines, and

I talk about heavy-handed or big—Cabernet is big and full-bodied. I call it the linebacker of the wine world. Then you’ve got Pinot Noir, which is more about balance and elegance. So, if Cabernet is a linebacker, Pinot Noir would be the ballerina. They’re both athletes, but with different approaches to athletics, so they have different approaches to your palate. Cabernet is big, dry, and highly tannic, so you might serve a Cabernet or Malbec if you’re having a steak for Thanksgiving, but you wouldn’t want to do that with a turkey. “With a turkey,” James continues, “you want something that’s going to have a little more acidity, less tannins, and medium body; not that big mouth-filling richness. You can do a Beaujolais or an old-world Italian Sangiovese, which tends to be a very food-friendly wine.” Somewhere in between might be a soft, flirty rosé. And rosé wine seems to be having a moment. “Rosé was always thought of as a summer wine, but people are now drinking it year-round. It’s an excellent choice to go with turkey.” What about bubbles? “I almost hesitate to answer that because it’s kind of the easy answer. You can drink Champagne or sparkling with anything because of that really bright acidity. Especially if you have a fried bird, a Prosecco or sparkling wine is going to cut right through that fattiness and balance it out really nicely.” If you’re hosting a tableful of friends and family this year, James says it’s easy to bring together a collection of wines that will please the crowd. “If you do one bottle of sparkling, whether it’s white or rosé, a bottle of dry white, a bottle of rosé, and a bottle of medium-bodied red, you’ve got something to cover just about anybody’s preference.”

What if I’m serving ham this year? “Lots of people have ham for Thanksgiving, right? It’s very traditional to pair ham and Pinot. But again, you can get creative. You can do a Grenache, you can do a Beaujolais…really, any of those medium-bodied reds will be delicious. “

What about dessert? “If you’re having pumpkin pie for dessert, I would go with something like a tawny port. The spiciness of the pie combined with that kind of nuttiness and caramel notes of a tawny port? Lovely. And it would work with an apple pie as well.”

How much should I spend on a bottle of wine? “That’s kind of an impossible question to answer because wine is so incredibly subjective. That said, I’m a firm believer that there is an absolute ocean of delicious wine in that $15–$25 retail price point. If you go to your wine shop and tell them you’re looking for a nice off-dry Riesling for around 20 bucks, they should be able to find you something that’ll work really well. There’s no reason to break the bank.” James Lewis is a sommelier who has been in the wine business for more than 26 years, and he and his wife Nancie own Crush Wine Bar in Castle Rock Colorado.
