To The Cutest Members Of Our Community As summer begins to wind down and the start of school commences, the carefree days of slower morning routines and spending more time adventuring is exchanged for busier school and sport routines and schedules. The summers tend to progressively feel like they fly by the older we get, as do the years, but the simple pleasures of summer never get old. Although the routine of school for our children is often a welcome friend by the time August rolls around, it is generally a little bittersweet. Our August issue is dedicated to the cutest members of our community— kids and pets. They both have a way of making us feel special and their loyalty and sense of wonder is refreshing. In this issue, we are highlighting a few of our go-to spots to enjoy with kids and fur-kids. As a lifelong resident of the Pascack Valley I have experienced the joys of growing up in an area that offers so much to its residents. While I do not have kids of my own yet, my goal is to highlight and showcase local businesses and events around the community for families to enjoy. This month we sat down with Aeon Fitness and Gymnastics to discuss all the activities they have to offer for kids in the community. For anyone that knows me, pets are one of my greatest passions. From growing up with dogs, to now having reptiles, fish, chickens, and cats I pride myself on being an animal lover. In this issue, we highlight Cat Crew Rescue, a local volunteer cat rescue where I rescued my two cats Lorenzo and Liliana. We also spotlight HoundsTown Hillsdale home to the happiest dogs on earth and a great place to bring your furry friend for the day or an overnight stay! As summer comes to a close, we hope you are able to take some time to relax and spend time with the ones you love. Cat Crew Rescue Considering a new pet? Why not adopt a kitten or cat in need of a forever home? Sophia Sembos of Cat Crew Rescue would highly recommend it. The retired attorney founded the 501(c) (3) in 2018 after volunteering with other rescue organizations. “I felt that I wanted to do it on my own,” she says. “A few of the volunteers I worked with joined me to start Cat Crew Rescue. That was four years ago.” The organization’s mission is to rescue, rehab, and rehome homeless cats with care and compassion. Foster families take on the care of the cats until permanent homes can be found. Adoption fees cover the costs of all medical care, including vaccinations, neutering, and deworming. The cats are fully vetted prior to adoption. “Some people like to foster kittens, some prefer adult cats,” says Sophia. “Most people want kittens because they are a quick turnover—they are adopted so quickly. Fostering an adult cat is more of a commitment.” Non-socialized cats are a unique challenge, which Sophia herself undertook years before starting her rescue. “I rescued my cat, Champ, from an organization in New York City called ‘Cats on Death Row,’”

she says. “He had been hit by a car and lost a leg. I thought it would be a great project for my kids, but at first, I thought I was in over my head. It took about a year and three surgeries, but now, he’s our favorite.” Over 25 volunteers are working with the organization. “I have someone who manages our social media accounts and people who foster, transport, or contribute to food or vet bills. We also have volunteers who make blankets for the cats. Every cat in our rescue gets a blanket to keep that helps them transition by having something familiar with them. @catcrewrescue

Whether you are planning a vacation, staycation, or a day trip down the shore, you may want to consider that your best friend would like some warm-weather fun too. Check out HoundsTown in Hillsdale, where dogs can enjoy top-notch care and lots of interactive play. HoundsTown offers boarding services, daily doggie daycare, or just a here-and-there playdate for the pooch in your life. Manager Perrin DeFreitas has seen hundreds of pups bound through the doors, from five-pound toy Yorkies to 125-pound St. Bernards. “All dogs are grouped by their size and temperament, and they get to play all day in one of our five indoor temperature-controlled playrooms or our outdoor playroom.”

The facility, which opened in October 2020, specializes in dog care and socialization. “We let the dogs be dogs,” says Perrin. “We remove their collars and harnesses so they can feel free to run around and play all day. They have a good time, and we tire them out!” Perrin and his team “get the pawty started” for their four-legged friends with monthly themed events. “They are usually centered around a holiday, but sometimes we have to get creative,” says Perrin. “In June, we hosted a prom. We took prom pictures and videos of the dogs (and their ‘dates’) and posted them on our Facebook page so that all of the owners could see them.” Perrin tags the owners on social media whenever their pups are in the spotlight.

The August event promises to be a fun-in-thesun pool party, complete with doggie pools and sprinklers. “Some dogs love the water, and some don’t, but we will have something for everyone,” says Perrin. “Each dog has its own personality, but they all know how to have a good time.” Whether your pet needs a daycare program or vacation-time boarding, HoundsTown offers a free evaluation to ensure that your dog’s stay will be a happy one. Owners fill out an intake form and bring pets in for a brief evaluation. Perrin notes that it's beneficial for dogs to be exposed to their new play place ahead of time. “We advise that owners bring new dogs in as early in the day as possible so that they are not overwhelmed by walking into a room with ten other

dogs,” says Perrin. “They may be a bit nervous at first, but after a few days, we see the dogs running into the room to see their friends. We always keep a close eye on them to ensure they are comfortable.” Social interaction and healthy play are perfect ways to tire out active dogs. Daycare is not only for people who go to the office each day; it’s also a smart alternative for people who work from home and cannot be distracted during a Zoom call by Rufus climbing onto their lap. “Our clients can bring their dogs every day, once a week, or once a month,” says Perrin. Dog owners needing boarding services can choose between HoundsTown’s townhome or suite accommodations. Townhomes are 4’ x 4’ and are $58 per night, and suites are 5' x 5' at $80 per night. Both include lots of playtime and exercise. Dogs eat and sleep separately. There are various packages available for doggie daycare, starting at around $31 per day. Stephanie Gaglioti and Amanda Lorenze spend a lot of time together. The best friends have known each other since the third grade, growing up in Park Ridge. They were both involved in gymnastics growing up, worked at Dora's Gymnastics in Hillsdale, and participated in competitive cheerleading in high school. The two went separate ways for their college careers but ended up back together again to establish Aeon Fitness and Gymnastics in 2010. "We worked together at this gym when it was Dora's Gymnastics," says Amanda. "We've been here since we were 14 or 15— that's a long time!" Aeon offers two side-by-side gyms, the second one being added during an expansion in 2019. One gym is dedicated to competitive and pre-competitive team training, and the other accommodates recreational programs, classes, camps, and birthday parties. "We started with seven coaches, and now we have 60," says Stephanie. "In 2010 we had about 300 kids during a ten-week period, and now we have 1300 for the same period. We feel that it's important to continue remodeling and upgrading our facilities." Although the facility has turned out state, regional and national champions, the focus of this women-owned business is on more than gymnastics. The partners set a high bar in delivering a quality gymnastics

program that emphasizes a well-rounded life view and the ultimate significance of developing each student as a whole. "We chose the name "Aeon" because it means forever, or everlasting," says Amanda. "It's important to us that everything our students learn here can be useful throughout their lives." "Gymnastics creates a great foundation for life, says Stephanie. "Academics come first, but most of our students excel all around—even the busiest student-athletes. Everyone comes for a different reason. Some doctors recommend that children participate in gymnastics to improve coordination or expend extra energy." The facility teaches all ages and levels, emphasizing that everyone needs to work toward their personal goals. Children with special needs are also welcomed into classes, and they benefit from the workout, structure, and thrill of achievement. "We have the ability to challenge everyone in a positive way by empowering them to set goals and push their limits. It's important to instill confidence in movement as well as body and spatial awareness. These are all great lifelong skills," says Amanda. Featured programs at the gym include gymnastics, tumble, cheer, and Ninja Warrior (yes, like the show!) for boys and girls aged three and up.

Their fun, youthful approach to the discipline of gymnastics makes for a positive experience for students. Stephanie notes, "It's a younger vibe here, and we are very community-centered. We hire local athletes, high school coaches, and college students along with renowned professional coaches. We have a big staff, but it works well for us. They also prioritize giving back to the community and various charities with fundraising events. "We try hard to inspire kids with positive memories that continually develop their strong foundations," says Amanda. Building a business from the ground up with a lifelong friend certainly has its challenges, but the rewards are invaluable. I went to school for sports psychology but decided that was not the direction I wanted for a career. I spent some time as a personal trainer and enjoyed that very much. When my husband was accepted into law school in Coral Gables, Florida, I spent time getting my real estate license before moving back north. After working with several different agencies, I’m excited to be an agent with Compass.

Some days, I can meet up with a friend for coffee, other days, I’m working hard to negotiate a great offer. It's exciting! My experience in psychology and personal training has given me a great foundation for working with people. I love helping make the home search easier--it can be challenging! I’ve even babysat while my clients went to check out a house on the market.

He loves people and gets excited to meet new friends, but then he tuckers out and needs a nap. Sometimes I put him in a backpack, and he comes with me on hikes or errands. He was even in our wedding!
