IGNITE YOUR SUMMER ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY PHILLIP BARONE

2 Easy Fires For Your Backyard Fire Pit We all have that friend. The one whose house you go to and everyone hangs out by the backyard fire pit with a near-perfect fire running all night. Drinks, food, stories, and laughter ensue the entire time. "Let's do this at my house next weekend,” you tell everyone. After all, you built the fire pit already. The issue left is that unless you are an experienced fire maker or an Eagle Scout, your fire may not start as easily or burn as well as your friends did. So we are here to show you two of the easiest fires to build in your backyard fire pit. These will light easily and burn bright. Maybe it's time to make someone jealous of your fire.

TEPEE FIRE

LOG CABIN FIRE

Possibly the easiest fire to make. 1. Place a big, loose handful of tinder or crumpled newspaper where you want to have your fire. 2. Mound plenty of small kindling over the tinder. 3. Arrange small, then medium, then large-sized sticks around the kindling as if they were the poles of a tepee. 4. Leave an opening in the “tepee” on the side facing the wind to ensure air reaches the tinder. 5. Light under the tinder.

Probably the most useful as it works well in high wind and rain. 1. Place a big, loose handful of tinder or crumpled newspaper where you want to have your fire. 2. Mound plenty of small kindling over the tinder. 3. Put 2 large sticks on either side of your pile 4. Add 2 slightly thinner sticks on top of those but facing the opposite way. 5. Keep going up and, as you go, move the sticks slightly in towards the center of each layer 6. Finish with a layer of small branches at the top 7. Light under the tinder.

Your last step for either style is to invite those Pascack Valley City Lifestyle people to your next fire pit hangout!

T H E H E R M I TA G E MUSEUM ARTICLE BY KRIS PEPPER | PHOTOGRAPHY BY THE HERMITAGE

A Revolutionary Piece of History

With humble beginnings as a two-story farmhouse built in the mid-1700s, the Hermitage, located at 335 North Franklin Turnpike, Ho-Ho-Kus, has an intriguing story to tell. After the French and Indian War, the house was purchased by James Marcus Provost, an officer in the British Army. He was called into active duty at the dawn of the Revolution and left his wife, Theodosia, at home, where her loyalties were soon to be tested at the home front of the American Revolution. In July 1778, following the Battle of Monmouth, Theodosia invited General George Washington and his officers to the Hermitage during the court-martial of General Charles Lee at Paramus First Church. Washington was headquartered there for four days with his staff, including Alexander Hamilton and John Laurens. He was also accompanied by the young French nobleman, the Marques de Lafayette. Theodosia soon met Aaron Burr, and the two quickly developed an intimate friendship that attracted immense criticism and disapproval since Theodosia’s husband was fighting for the British. Her husband had died by the end of the war, and Theodosia married Burr at the Hermitage in July of 1782. The Hermitage passed through a series of owners. It became a tavern and was then purchased in 1807 by Dr. Elijah Rosencrantz and his wife, Cornelia Suffern. In the 1820s, he built a cotton mill along the Ho-Ho-Kus Brook,

which served as the family-owned business for more than 60 years. In 1848, the home was restored to the Gothic Revival it is today. In 1917, Bess Rosencrantz opened a tea room in the front parlors of the Hermitage, running the business with her niece, Mary Elizabeth, for more than a decade. Mary Elizabeth was the last Rosencrantz to live at the Hermitage. When she died in March 1970, she bequeathed the house and its contents to the State of New Jersey. In 1970, the Hermitage was designated a National Historic Landmark. The structure was saved from ruin by a dedicated group of volunteers back in 1972,” says Julie Zier, Director of Development for the Hermitage Museum. Now, the Friends of The Hermitage strives to keep the museum’s legacy alive because of the great historical significance it represents. “The home has been restored as a museum and educational center as an ongoing project throughout the past 50 years, says Julie. “Covid interrupted our fundraising events, but now we have a full calendar of events planned!” On July 16, the Friends of the Hermitage celebrates An Evening of Pops at The Hermitage. This summer concert will help commemorate The Hermitage turning 50 years old and the Glen Rock Pops turning 100! The event will take place outside on the Hermitage lawn, pack a picnic basket! Get more information on the Hermitage and this year’s events at thehermitage.org.

NHL Commissioner, Gary Bettman, has championed the sport of hockey since his tenure began in 1993. When he assumed office, Gary went to work increasing the league’s footprint in the U.S. At the time, there were NHL clubs in 24 U.S. markets. The league now consists of 32 teams, and is considered the premier professional ice hockey league in the world. Gary was named Sports Executive of the Year by The Sports Business Journal in 2014 and he was inducted into the International Jewish Sports Hall of Fame in 2016. He is also an honored member of the Hockey Hall of Fame in the Builder Category. He is currently the longest-serving active commissioner in professional sports. We had the opportunity to sit down with the Saddle River resident and get his unique perspective on the great sport of hockey.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU AND YOUR FAMILY LIVED IN NORTHERN NEW JERSEY? I grew up in Queens and later moved to Huntington, Long Island. Before moving to Saddle River in 1995, we were in Rockland County, New York. My wife, Shelli, and I have three grown children who live locally: Lauren, Jordan, and Brittany, and I have six grandchildren.

FUN FACT: A recent highlight of Gary’s “grandfatherhood” was the opportunity to watch his grandson, Matthew, in the NJSIAA Public B boys ice hockey state championship on March 7 at Prudential Center. Matthew was part of the Northern Highlands high school team that brought home the title!

HAVE YOU ALWAYS BEEN A SPORTS FAN? Growing up, I was always a fan of all the different sports. I would use my G.O. card to watch Ranger games at Madison Square Garden. Back in the ‘60s, you could get a student “general organization” membership card to attend games very inexpensively. I’d pack my lunch and go whenever I could!

CAN YOU SKATE? When I was in college, my girlfriend (now wife, Shelli) taught me so that I could play intramural hockey.

HOW DID YOU GET INVOLVED WITH THE NHL? I’m a lawyer by training. When I was 32, I got a job as general counsel for the NBA. I was there for 12 years before moving over to the NHL as its commissioner.

“Running a sports league is equivalent to

WHAT’S A TYPICAL DAY FOR GARY BETTMAN? Running a sports league is equivalent to running a major entertainment company. We manage the game schedule, media, officials, licensing, sponsors, advertisers, and business partners. My responsibility is to make sure everything works together. For example, in the tech space, we have relationships with Apple, Amazon, SAP, and Verizon. We need to constantly develop ways to create valuable relationship opportunities for our business sponsors. My days consist of lots of meetings and phone calls. I deal with day-to-day issues like working on collective bargaining agreements, negotiating new media contracts, and promoting new initiatives. We’re busy operating 32 franchises playing in 1312 different season games throughout the U.S. and Canada. I try to attend a game in each arena annually; however, the past two years have been challenging due to COVID.

SPEAKING OF COVID, HOW IS THE NHL BOUNCING BACK?

running a major entertainment company.”

After the isolation of playing in empty arenas, we are now back to our regular, full schedule. The Canadian games have been an exceptional challenge because they didn’t permit spectators for a long time. Now, we’re coming back strong!

THE GAME OF HOCKEY STRIKES ME AS A PLATFORM FOR INTEGRITY, INCLUSION, AND POSITIVE VALUES. CAN YOU SHARE A BIT ABOUT THAT? Hockey enjoys the most incredible connection to fans of any sport out there. Our league takes great pride in the values of the game and strives to use our platform to stand for the “right thing,” teaching young people the lessons of team play, education, and hard work. We are happy to be back post-pandemic, delivering the excitement of the game to our fans. In 2017, the NHL and the National Hockey League Players’ Association (NHLPA) unveiled hockey’s Declaration of Principles, developed by stakeholders to advance policies and programs while inspiring fans, players, and communities to create the best hockey experience possible.

HOW DOES THE NHL GIVE BACK TO FANS AND THE COMMUNITY? The NHL management and players are involved in providing a safe, positive, and inclusive environment for everyone. Our league is involved in a wide array of diversity programs, environmental sustainability efforts, and food recovery programs. We also partner with the You Can Play Project, which works to ensure the safety and inclusion of all who participate in sports. Our players are very giving of themselves, and many have their own foundations as well. There are so many initiatives going on. All of the latest news can be found on thisishockey.org. We take great pride in the way clubs connect with the community, give back, and make a difference in people’s lives. It’s as important as anything else we do. NHL.com

Life Stories Worth Exploring

Four Inspiring Biographies

ARTICLE BY LUCY PROBERT | PHOTOGRAPHY BY SARAH FLANNERY

I NSP IR E D BY | ED U CATION

*BROKEN HORSES: A MEMOIR BRANDI CARLILE

*TASTE: MY LIFE THROUGH FOOD STANLEY TUCCI

Five-time Grammy award-winning singer and songwriter Brandi Carlile has a lot to say in her captivating new memoir: From her early years in the Pacific Northwest dealing with poverty, family struggles with alcoholism, and a bout with meningitis at age five which almost took her life, she holds nothing back. Supported by her family and her small hometown as an adolescent, when a local pastor shunned her for being gay, Carlile started on a journey to a life of music, eventually collaborating with such musical giants as Elton John, Dolly Parton, and Joni Mitchell. She offers a unique behind-the-scenes look at the music business, touring for 15 years and producing six studio albums while raising two children with her wife, Catherine Shepherd. Kirkus Reviews calls this book “an intimate life-affirming look at a musician whose artistic journey is far from over.”

Many who didn’t already know Tucci as an actor fell in love with him during Covid, when he posted a video on Instagram making a Negroni cocktail at home. In this memoir, the author of The Tucci Cookbook and The Tucci Table and self-professed "food obsessive" writes about his life growing up in an Italian American family in Westchester County who spent every night together around the kitchen table. Fusing his love of family, friends, and food, Tucci writes of his mother: “I can honestly say that on the four-burner electric stove she used throughout my childhood and on the gas hob that replaced it, she never cooked a bad meal. Not once.” The Washington Post raves: “Reading this book will make you more attentive to the glorious--or modest--food on your table and to the people with whom you are privileged to share it.” Some of his favorite recipes are sprinkled throughout.

*THE BEST OF ME DAVID SEDARIS American humorist and frequent New Yorker contributor David Sedaris’s talent for biographical and witty writing is on display in his latest collection of essays. Taken from previously published pieces, this retrospective spanning nearly 30 years includes his funniest and most thoughtful work, like recalling long-ago family vacations with his family of six siblings, including his actress/comedian sister and frequent collaborator Amy. From Kirkus Reviews, high praise for this storyteller: “It’s a lovely mélange by a modern Mark Twain who is always willing to set himself up as a shlemiel in the interest of a good yarn.” A great book to dip in and out of for insightful and incisive humor. For audiobook fans, this is a great listen.

*ALEXANDER HAMILTON RON CHERNOW This acclaimed biography was what Lin-Manuel Miranda brought with him on vacation to Mexico in 2008, inspiring his Broadway musical of the same name, which went on to win 11 Tony Awards and a Pulitzer Prize for Drama. At 700 plus captivating pages, The New York Times says of Hamilton’s author: “Nobody has captured Hamilton himself as fully and beautifully as Chernow.” Meticulously researched and covering his entire life from his early years in the Caribbean to his famous death at 49 in a duel with Aaron Burr, Chernow delves deeply into his contributions to the Federalist Papers and his interactions with George Washington, James Madison, Thomas Jefferson, and James Monroe. The Wall Street Journal calls it “impressively thorough and superbly written.”

THE DR I V E-IN EX PER IENCE THE WARWICK DRIVE-IN SERVES UP CINEMATIC NOSTALGIA

Chances are, you spent at least a night or two of your childhood lying in the back of your parent's station wagon watching a movie at a drive-in theater. At one point, there were nearly 4,000 drive-in theaters across the US. They’re far harder to find these days, but they are still around — technologically updated for the modern age but still bringing a nostalgic vibe. One such theater is still in operation in nearby Warwick, NY. Today’s drive-in has upgraded their video to all-digital, replaced the tinny speaker hung on the side of the window with a high-quality signal played through the car radio, and features multiple screens playing current releases. Sure, you have other options now for taking in a movie. Whether it’s at a luxury theater with heated reclining seats and dinner options or simply at home on your ultra HD screen, you don’t have to make much effort for your cinematic viewing. But there’s something unique about the drive-in that is hard to understand unless you’ve done it. It’s old-time Americana, even if the station wagon has been replaced by a minivan, SUV, or Tesla. Why not make it a retro night of a movie under the stars, snacking on some popcorn and maybe sipping on a Yoo-Hoo? A trip back in time to a forgotten age will be an experience that you’ll always remember.

CITY LIFESTYLE: SHARE WITH US YOUR BACKGROUND AND THE INFLUENCE IT HAD ON YOUR JOURNEY TO WHERE YOU ARE TODAY. DAPHNE OZ : I was born in Philly, raised in

New Jersey, and now my husband and our four kids and I live in Florida. I spend a few days each week working in NYC taping our new syndicated talk show, The Good Dish, covering everything delicious in daytime which is a dream job for an eater by nature, by calling and by choice—like I am. My mother’s family is part Italian and my father’s family is Turkish, and these two incredible food cultures inform so much of how I grew up eating and how I love to cook now. The vibrance of flavors, passion for gathering family and friends to the table, and effortless ways in which simple meals become beautiful memories are just some of the ways I try to infuse all my cooking with the joy of this heritage. I’ve been to culinary school, but every bite I take continues my education, and the foundation of my love of cooking started at my mother’s and grandmother’s elbows, watching and then helping them whip up these delicious, nourishing meals for their big families.

CL: WHAT ARE YOUR TIPS FOR HOSTING A MEMORABLE DINNER PARTY AT HOME? DO: When I entertain, my general approach

is: Abundant Simplicity. Appetizers are generous piles of a few different things – olives, hunks of parmesan, spiced nuts, torn bread with herby oil to dunk in, sliced Persian cucumbers with a pool of labne or Greek yogurt, olive oil, and flaky salt for dipping. I look for recipes that are simple or that I’ve made 100 times before that are always crowd pleasers and leave me plenty of time to enjoy my company. The whole point of a beautiful evening together is to make sure you, the host, are relaxed and comfortable, because your guests will take their cue from you. I always set a drink out that guests can help themselves to when they arrive, which frees my hands up to continue any final preparations and has the added benefit of helping them get comfortable and feel right at home. I love making edible centerpieces and will put tons of bowls and platters out in the center of the table spilling over with fresh produce or herbs in terracotta planters that guests can help themselves to. I enjoy colorful glasses, tons of gold candlesticks, and then handmade ceramic plates and pretty, linen napkins to keep it textural.

If you’re looking for a yummy signature cocktail, I’ve fallen in love with the Plume & Petal range of mid-proof premium infused vodkas. Each of their lemon, peach and cucumber flavors is naturally infused and layered with essences like white tea and elderflower and just a hint of honey for sweetness, so the taste is sophisticated and bespoke.

MAYHEM ATHLETE

Online Bodyweight and Minimal Equipment Workouts

Sweaty and challenging workouts done in 30 minutes or less at home

Bags are packed, reservations are made, and the Out of Office automatic reply is letting everyone know you have officially entered vacation mode. There’s one thing that’s lingering: how to go on vacation without pressing pause on the fitness progress you’ve made, or avoid commuting to a gym and paying drop-in fees. Mayhem Athlete provides online programming that guarantees challenging workouts which can be done in 30 minutes or less. These quick but effective workouts incorporate compound movements such as burpees, push ups and lunges. Compound movements use more than one muscle group, requiring more energy from your muscles to recover. This means you can continue to burn calories while enjoying the beach or sitting at work, long after the workout is over. The Mayhem Athlete M30 program offers two options for all fitness levels. Mayhem Bodyweight, a 30-minute format that requires no equipment, and Mayhem Minimal, a 30-minute format which only requires a couple dumbbells. Mayhem Athletes’ easy to use app, SugarWOD, provides you with a warm up, workout, accessory cool-down, and coaching video - ensuring you get the most out of your 30 minutes! You can also find video demonstrations for each movement within the app and a community of like-minded individuals who are doing the same workouts around the globe.
