Home For the Holidays The holidays are here and as the spirit of the season is among us, we often try to replicate what made the season feel so magical to us in our youth. The traditions we set for our own families often mirror some of what we experienced as a child whether it is the smells, the sounds, the lights, the holiday activities or a combination of it all that reflects that best. One of my favorite holiday traditions is attending the Home For The Holidays parade through downtown Westwood. This event does a wonderful job of bringing the community together and kicking off the holiday season. Visit our events section for more details. This month we had the pleasure of sitting down with George Halwagy, owner of La Mirage Jewelers, to hear about his journey toward owning a beautiful store in Park Ridge. We also checked in with golf professional Gary Samborgna, owner of Go Low Indoor Golf, a new state-of-theart indoor golf simulation facility in Paramus. Lastly, local award-winning culinary professional, Gwynn Galvin, shared her fun and artistic Christmas Tree Brownie recipe, which is perfect for the holiday season. This month, we wanted to highlight the magic of the season and all that our community has to offer to help spread holiday cheer. While this season can be beautiful for some, it can be painful and lonely for others, especially those who have recently lost a loved one. In the true spirit of the season, let’s take care of those in our community that need assistance or who are alone. My hope for you this season is that you feel love and peace and that we all remember to take care of each other extending grace, empathy, and love. Happy Holidays!

GO LOW INDOOR GOLF Go Low Indoor Golf aims high to provide golfers and non-golfers with opportunities to learn the basics, improve their games, be social, and have fun--even during the winter months. Owner Gary Samborgna Jr. opened the facility in Paramus in mid-September. A certified golf teaching professional, Gary has been sharing his love of the game since 2012 and has taught both indoors and outdoors at courses including Paramus Golf Course. However, he has a special love for teaching indoors. “The technology has come a long way to keep the game fresh over the winter,” he says. Go Low has five simulator bays in which up to four golfers can virtually play courses like Pebble Beach, Bethpage Black, or St. Andrews. A foursome can play 18 holes in four hours, but players don’t have to feel like they are committing to a long day out on the links. If they want to speed up the game, they can choose to play a scramble format. “The bays are priced by the hour, so you can play as long as you want, or you

can just stop in for 30 minutes during lunch to hit some balls,” says Gary. “A foursome would divide the cost of the bay among themselves. It’s a very reasonable cost for a lot of fun and more of a relaxed environment. A lot less pressure than on the golf course!” Maybe golf isn’t your game. That’s ok because Go Low's fun and social atmosphere is perfect for any type of casual get-together or party. “We host groups of friends who bring their own food and drinks,” says Gary. “Beginning in January, we’ll accommodate public and private leagues for all skill levels. Sometimes a few couples will come in for a night out—the guys play a round and their wives relax and chat over a glass of wine. You can make it whatever you want to make it.” Golf groups of mixed skill levels may wish to play fun golf games rather than a typical round, such as golf skeeball, golf cornhole, carts beer pong, or minigolf. All variations are available thanks to the high-tech simulator system. There are also great games for more advanced skill

levels such as FORE (like HORSE in basketball), Conquest, and Razor’s Edge. “You don’t have to be a golfer,” says Gary, “Come and play a fun game and come for the party!” Go Low is a perfect place to host a corporate team-building event or even a kid’s birthday party. Their simulator projection system can also be used for presentations, slideshows, videos, or Playstation games to complement the event. Practice your drives in the simulator or your putts on the green. Schedule a few lessons with Gary to improve your game. He teaches all skill levels. “Golf is a great sport for business or to be social,” says Gary. “You can play regardless of your skill level, and at any age. La Mirage Jewelers in Park Ridge is a business based on building relationships. “They are the one thing that gets you through the hard times and that also makes the good times better,” says owner George Halwagy. He should know. George had humble beginnings, growing up in Lebanon and making his way to the United States in 1978. Having always had an interest in creative design and gemstones, he immediately began working in the jewelry industry and eventually accepted a position in 1980 at Cartier in New York City.

“I started designing jewelry from my original sketches to achieve exactly what the customer desired,” says George. “My clients weren’t looking for mass-marketed pieces, but rather one-of-a-kind, original pieces.” He continued building his business—and his family—marrying his wife Claudette in 1983. By 1986, George and Claudette opened a small location in New York and continued to expand, emphasizing the highest level of service and old-world craftsmanship. They continued to add to their extensive collection of diamonds and gems and added fine lines of watches and pearls. They eventually moved to a location in Paramus, which led to high volume transactions, and lasting relationships with sought-after diamond and gold suppliers— resulting in George’s ability to work with the highest quality gems and metals. This was a big advantage to the final designed piece. However, the deeper client engagement aspect was missing. In 2019, George and Claudette opened La Mirage Jewelers in Park Ridge, designing and customizing the entire space to suit their business and clientele perfectly. They specialize in original designs and can also redesign and modernize your old jewelry. George loves helping people transform old rings, orphan earrings, or outdated, meaningful necklaces into beautiful, wearable pieces. “I consider my customers to be part of the family,” says George. “They bring so much joy to my life, and being in the jewelry business allows me to be a part of the happiest moments in their lives.” George and Claudette have three grown sons who are pursuing their own careers, and they are proud to call Park Ridge their business home. “We moved to Park Ridge and were only here for a few months when everything shut down due to Covid. However, we were able to get through the pandemic alongside this amazing community,” says George. “We couldn’t be more grateful.” lamiragejewelers.com

02 In microwave-safe bowl, melt 1 cup butter. Stir in sugar until dissolved. Add eggs and vanilla, stirring until blended.
03 Stir in flour, 1 cup cocoa powder and salt until a batter forms. 04 Spread evenly in prepared baking pan and bake 30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in center comes out clean.
05 Cool 15 minutes in pan. Using foil overhang transfer brownie to wire rack and cool completely.
BUTTERCREAM FROSTING 01 Meanwhile, beat 1/2 cup butter until creamy. Reduce mixer speed and gradually add confectioners’ sugar until blended. Add milk and beat until creamy and smooth. Add green gel food coloring and beat until blended. Transfer frosting to pastry bag fitted with an open star #17 decorating tip.
02 Cut brownie horizontally into three sections. Cut each section into 8 triangles as shown in photo. There will be small brownie scraps on ends of each sections. Feel free to snack on those!

Giving Campaign Now in its third year, the City Lifestyle Giving Campaign will give away $300,000 this holiday season to help individual community members who would benefit from a helping hand during their time of need. But they need YOUR HELP to make it happen! Maybe you know of a single parent struggling to provide, an elderly person who has experienced loss, a child enduring a health issue, a co-worker suffering a sudden, unexpected tragedy or a neighbor with a financial hardship who has fallen between the cracks of getting assistance. Chances are you know someone with a specific need—even if nobody else does. To preserve and protect the dignity of every recipient, the City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is completely confidential. No identities will be revealed or publicized in ANY way. (Even those who nominate others may remain anonymous if they choose.) Last year, City Lifestyle was able to give to more than 70 recipients all over the country by sending checks in the mail through New Year’s Eve. (This year, the goal is to double that number with checks ranging in amount up to $3,000 each.) With nominations flooding in from community members and leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you, we were able to reach people who might otherwise go unnoticed. “We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is all about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.” Together with Matthew Perry, Chief Sales Officer, Steven adds that the outpouring and gratitude from the recipients was overwhelming and affirmed that this is a tradition they want to continue. “We believe God has blessed our company with continued success,” Matthew adds, “so we in turn want to be a blessing to others.” City Lifestyle has also enacted an internal giving program whereby every employee in the company receives $100 to give away to someone in the community. “The idea is to encourage our employees to keep doing it on their own,” Steven says. “Taking care of one another and blessing others is so rewarding that it perpetuates a cycle of giving. It’s extremely important to me as a person and as a company to foster that culture of generosity.”

ANTONE. The cocktail is said to be named after a Manhattan beach surfer who lost a surfing competition. As with many cocktails, we add one ingredient at a time to the glass. The Harvey Wallbanger is like a complex screwdriver. This cocktail became famous in the 1970s from a mascot of a silly cartoon character that promoted the Galliano liqueur. The Harvey Wallbanger became popular and became a staple through the 1990s . Then it faded when speakeasies became more trendy. The Harvey Wallbanger is a simple cocktail with a sweet and exquisite flavor. This cocktail only consisted of three ingredients,

vodka, orange juice and Galliano, when invented. The Tiki glass was designed for this cocktail and was used to serve the cocktail on the beach. Galliano, a sweet herbal liqueur, was invented in 1896 by the Italian distiller and brandy producer Arturo Vaccari of Livorno, Tuscany. Galliano L’ Authtico is a neutral alcohol and is infused with the pressings from the herbs except for the vanilla. It was re-launched in 2010 with bigger and brighter flavor. In the cocktail today we have the three main ingredients plus some extras to give it a trendy new taste.
The Harvey Wallbanger + 1½ oz. Vodka + 1 oz. Galliano + 2 oz. Orange Juice + ½ oz. Lemon Juice + ¼ oz. simple syrup (optional)

+ 2 dashes Vanilla Extract + Splash of soda In a shaker combine all ingredients except for the soda. Shake vigorously for eight seconds. Pour over fresh ice. Top with soda. Garnish with an orange slice and cherry. Enjoy!
