In this season of giving thanks, we often find ourselves reflecting on the many blessings in our lives. The true spirit of Thanksgiving encourages the conscious expression of gratitude. Its focus is on spending time with the ones that you love and giving back in a meaningful way. While ambition, competition, and slaying goals can be very healthy, forgetting to place importance on being present, enjoying the ride, and appreciating those around us can leave us missing out on what truly matters. We’ll never be content if we look outside ourselves and at our possessions or titles to determine if we are fulfilled. True contentment comes from within and from fulfilling who we were made to be. This month we had the pleasure of sitting down with Jennifer Casper, owner of Goldfish Swim School, to learn all about their state-of-the-art facilities in Closter and Wyckoff. We also covered a story on DePiero’s Farm Stand & Greenhouses, a staple in the Pascack Valley for nearly 100 years and one of the last remaining farms in the area. Lastly, local award-winning culinary professional, Gwynn Galvin, shared her unique Salted Caramel Pumpkin Cheesecake Bar recipe, which would be a perfect addition to your holiday dessert menu. Our November issue is dedicated to stories of gathering, gratefulness, and giving back to our community. Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays and this year I am especially thankful for our advertising partners and readers who make it possible for this magazine to be delivered to your doorstep each month. INGREDIENTS CRUST: • 2 cups graham cracker crumbs • 2/3 cup sugar • 1 tsp. ground cinnamon • 8 Tbs. 1/2 cup butter, melted CHEESECAKE: • 2 pkgs. (8 ounces each) cream cheese, at room temperature • 1 cup sugar • 3 eggs • 1 Tbs. vanilla extract • 1 cup 100% pure pumpkin puree • 1 cup sour cream • 4 tsp. pumpkin pie spice TOPPING: • 1/2 cup salted caramel topping, (ex Smucker’s) • 1 cup whipped topping • 18 candy pumpkins
INSTRUCTIONS Preheat oven to 325F. Line a 9-inch x 13-inch baking pan with foil, leaving a 2-inch overhang. Coat with nonstick cooking spray. CRUST: Combine graham cracker crumbs. 2/3 cup sugar and cinnamon. Stir in butter. Press crumbs onto bottom of pan. CHEESECAKE: 1. Beat cream cheese and 1 cup sugar on medium-high speed until smooth and creamy, about 2 minutes. 2. Add eggs and vanilla and beat until blended 3. Add pumpkin puree, sour cream, and pumpkin pie spice. Beat on medium until blended. 4. Pour cheesecake mixture evenly over crust and bake 45 minutes until center is set. 5. Cool on wire rack. Refrigerate 4 hours or overnight until chilled. TOPPING: 1. Using foil overhang, lift cheesecake out of pan. Cut into 18 pieces and drizzle with caramel topping. Garnish each cheesecake bar with a dollop of whipped topping and a sugar pumpkin. swirlsofflavor.com/

Swim season is never over at Goldfish Swim School in Closter. The school specializes in teaching children aged 4 months-12 years confidence, self-sufficiency, and healthy swimming skills. Aquatics was always part of life for owner Jennifer Casper, who was a high school swimmer and lifeguard during her adolescent years. “My husband and I saw the demand for a swim school,” she says. “We have four children, and it was difficult to find quality lessons for them when they were young. We learned about the Goldfish franchise through some relatives, and we knew it would be a good partnership.” They moved ahead with their plans, opened a facility in Wyckoff in 2015, and later opened in Closter in 2018. “We were so happy to be able to open in Closter,” says Jennifer. “We realized that families from the Pascack area were traveling to us in Wyckoff for swim lessons, so it was wonderful to be able to open a location closer to home for them.”
Goldfish Swim School has a unique philosophy about teaching young children to swim. “Children learn life skills best when they are safe, supervised, and able to explore. The fun, tropical environment at Goldfish is warm and comfortable for our students. The warm teaching pool is only 4 feet deep, which adds to the comfort level. Getting kids to attend swimming lessons can be challenging, so we make it as easy as possible with a colorful, lighthearted atmosphere.” “We have wonderful instructors and lifeguards,” says Jennifer. “We continually seek out excellent staff, and our organization has many roles and opportunities to advance. It all goes back to consistency; our staff stays with us and grows with us. All of our management team members were promoted from within—and we have a lot of fun with holiday parties, staff outings, contests, and perks.” Lessons are typically scheduled once a week for 30 minutes.

“Consistency is key,” says Jennifer. “That’s the science of swimming. It’s important to come regularly so that it becomes part of the child’s weekly schedule.” Maintaining your swimming regimen all year long--especially throughout the winter months--is also beneficial. “Starting and stopping lessons is not helpful,” notes Jennifer. “We see the best success in swimmers who keep up with it year-round. Older children can participate in our Swim Force for 8-12 year-olds. It is a non-competitive, instruction-based swim team and a fun way to meet other swimmers. It’s perfect for kids who may be interested in joining a swim team or just want to stay in shape.” The school’s proprietary approach maintains a philosophy that incorporates teaching swim and safety skills while building character and having fun. “We stick to our mission, and it works,” says Jennifer. goldfishswimschool.com/closter

DePiero’s Farm Stand & Greenhouses A Family Holiday Tradition ARTICLE BY KRIS PEPPER | PHOTOGRAPHY BY JEREMY LEBLED AND THE DEPIERO FAMILY The holidays lend themselves to reflective moments when we long for tradition and reminisce about simpler times and old-fashioned family gatherings. It’s a wonderful season to visit DePiero Farms on Summit Avenue in Montvale. A family farm for three generations, DePiero’s was established in 1924 when Tammy (DePiero) Palmieri’s grandfather bought the land, and the family is looking forward to its 100th anniversary in 2024. “We were a very close family, growing up on the farm,” says Tammy, whose oldest brother, Glen, manages the business. Over the years, various homes were built on the property, and each family member lived on the farm at some point in their lives. Tammy still lives there today. CONTINUED >

“Farming allows us to give back to the community.” Covering 15 acres in Montvale, the retail produce farm market sources the highest quality fruits and vegetables from Pennsylvania as well as other local growers. The apples are from New York state farms. Additional weekly trips to Hunts Point Market ensure that only the best produce appears at DePiero’s. “Pies are baked using our own produce in the recipes,” remarks Tammy. “We also have 12-14 greenhouses where we grow annual plants and garden flowers; we grow our own hydrangeas for Easter, and poinsettias for Christmas.” Visit DePieros for homegrown chrysanthemums, pumpkins, gourds, and cornstalks during the fall season. As Christmas draws near, it’s the best location to pick up your Christmas trees, wreaths, remembrance blankets, kissing balls, swags, mantel pieces, and poinsettias. Living and working on a farm inspires poignant memories—especially during the holidays. “My mom and dad did so much for us growing up,” says Tammy. “They provided an amazing childhood. My siblings and I are so thankful for all their hard work—17-hour days, seven days a week. They are not with us anymore, and that’s sad. But farming allows us to give back to the community. • Build a menu around the season. “In November, people crave turkey, sage stuffing and cranberry sauce,” Chef Kyle says. “Autumn dinners mean bigger-course meals with varied proteins, like turkey, duck and sirloin, hearty starches, and good fall produce, especially root vegetables such as butternut squash and pumpkin.” • Always greet guests with a beverage and appetizers. “Offer champagne for wine-lovers or a sparkling drink or signature cocktail. It’s all about serving guests to the highest caliber,” Kyle says. • Draw inspiration from the season’s changing colors, cooler temps and lower humidity to move back outdoors. “Think flannel blankets, wooden tables, fire pits, open grills, string lights and candles to create a really cool environment you haven’t been able to do all summer.” • “You can’t go wrong with fresh flowers,” Hannah says, “but keep bouquets low to not interfere with conversation flowing. For fall, I like richer, jewel-toned florals to mix and match and keep whimsical. I vary glass vases with burnished brass for warm fall vibes.” • An easy but thoughtful detail is to put a simple menu at each place setting, so guests know what to expect. “Add a pen, so guests can jot tasting notes, especially for wine pairings or multiple courses,” Hannah says. “Guests can share comments, then take the menu home as a sweet reminder of the event.” • Follow the French principle of mise en place or everything in place before your event. “This is actually our company’s name,” Kyle says. “It’s that important to us. Make sure the wines are all open, cocktails are pre-made, place settings are out, candles are lit and music is playing. When guests arrive, it gives that wow-factor and shows you intentionally made them feel special.” • To build confidence as a host, start small and practice. “Keep the menu and guest list small,” Kyle says. “Choose recipes you already have confidence in. If you make a great Beef Stroganoff, then go with that. People will love it!” • As fun as it is to dine outside, always have an indoors back-up plan. “We’ve had to bring it indoors before,” Hannah says. “It’s still fun.”
