October: Our Food & Drink Issue Welcome Fall! With the changing seasons comes a change in what we are craving, and with fall that often means comfort food. October is our most delectable issue of the year, filled with some of our favorite dishes and beverages available in the Pascack Valley. Fall to me means family, football, and food so what better way to kick off the season than diving into some of our local hot spots? I love meeting with business owners in our community each month and October definitely did not disappoint –what better topic to discuss than food and drink! This month we had the pleasure of sitting down with Chef/Owners Ralph and Julia Colantuono of Granita Grille Restaurant in Westwood and learned about what has kept them as a staple in the Pascack Valley for nearly 25 years. We also caught up with Jonathan Goldstein, Owner of B&M Market in Park Ridge. Planning a party or looking for a gourmet meal at home? Woodcliff Lake Teen Makes Film Debut on Netflix Actor Jonathan Lengel of Woodcliff Lake stars in Netflix's "13: The Musical.” At just 16 years old Jonathan is staring in the role of Archie for the movie. The Netflix variation of the 2008 Broadway show premiered in August. Jonathan has a rare form of congenital muscular dystrophy and uses a wheelchair, just like his character Archie. This is an outstanding achievement for the Pascack Valley resident.

18th Century Gerrit Haring House Will Be Relocated Old Tappan's historic Dutch Gerrit Haring House is set to be relocated to a new location across Old Tappan Road. The home dates back to 1751 and has been unoccupied for over 10 years now. Four years ago, Tracy Grotz realized she had extra space on the lower level of Cyclesport, the bicycle shop she owns with her husband. After “brewing” about it a bit, she partnered with Marissa Riario to open Il Freno Espresso Bar. (The words "Il Freno" refer to a bicycle brake in Italian). The shop was originally a draw for the cyclists who meet for rides. “Although it adjoins the bike store, we didn’t want it perceived as a place for cyclists,” says Tracy. “As we grew, we gained a nice following with customers from Park Ridge, Montvale, Hillsdale, and Woodcliff Lake,” adds Marissa. The espresso bar serves matcha, cold brew, and lattes. Coffee “purists” love the regular coffee they carry. “We get it from a family-owned business and grind it ourselves,” says Tracy. “It’s very popular.” Il Freno features locally-sourced muffins, scones, and raspberry bars as well as baked goods from Balthazar and Sans (gluten-free) on the weekends. I’m amazed about where this business has gone and the success we've seen. We've met great people in the community. Step into the warm and friendly atmosphere of Granita Grille in Westwood. This family-owned business will soon be celebrating 25 years of serving up delicious Italian meals passed down through the generations. Ralph and Julia Colantuono make it a point to treat their customers like family. “When you are in the restaurant business, you dedicate your nights, weekends, and holidays to it,” says Ralph. “Our customers have become our extended family because we see them so often, and we have known them for so long,” adds Julia. Ralph takes charge of the kitchen, while Julia manages a variety of duties, including waitressing and hostessing. “Whatever needs to be done,” she notes with a smile. They also accommodate customers with dietary restrictions and preferences. “We do a lot of special orders so that people with allergies or nutritional preferences can come and dine,” says Ralph. The award-winning restaurant offers daily specials and popular family-style take-out dinners that feed four. They can be customized to feed larger families, but the portions are generous, and you may even have leftovers. There are other not-to-be-missed delights at Granita Grille. They host live music on Fridays and Saturdays by Edman. Known as the “one-man-band” of Westwood,

Step into B&M Market and meet Jonathan Goldstein. You may already know him. He’s the friendly guy, with the big smile, and the warm handshake, who seems to know everyone who enters his store by name. Growing up in Rivervale, Jonathan had jobs in the food industry throughout his life. Although he always thought he would someday own a restaurant, his day job was at a trading desk on Wall Street. Until he heard that B&M Market was on the “market.” “I found out it was for sale from family friends,” says Jonathan. “I knew this is what I wanted to do.” Jonathan enjoys providing the highest-quality foods and prime cuts of meats for his customers. “Our motto is ‘prime all the time,’” says Jonathan. “You won’t get a better steak anywhere. Our Bergen’s Best Burgers are second to none. Our skirt steak with scallion sauce, crab cakes, and veal chops are delicious.” The Market’s beef is all USDA Aged Prime, and the chicken is all-natural from Bell & Evans. They

Instructions 1. Heat oven to 250°F. Spray a 13 x 9-inch baking pan with non-stick cooking spray. Combine cereal and pecans in pan and set aside. 2. In a 4-cup microwaveable bowl, combine corn syrup, brown sugar and butter spread. Microwave on HIGH 1 minute 30 seconds. Stir. Microwave 30 seconds to 1 minute 30 seconds or until boiling. 3. Stir vanilla and baking soda into mixture. Pour over cereal mixture; stir to coat evenly. Bake for 1 hour, stirring every 20 minutes. Spread on baking sheet and cool completely; break into pieces. When cooled, add peanuts and pretzels. Makes about 10-11 cups. Store tightly covered.
