LIFESTYLE LETTER

Doing it “Parkland Style” Dear Reader, I hope this letter finds you enjoying the transition into one of my favorite times of year. There’s something about September that brings a sense of renewal. As summer winds down and routines begin again, it feels like the perfect time to refresh, refocus, and maybe even redefine our own personal style. Style is about so much more than fashion. It’s the way we present ourselves, care for the things we’ve been blessed with, and express who we are without saying a word. It’s found in the confidence that comes from feeling your best, whether that’s wearing an outfit you love, leaving the salon with a fresh new look, or driving a vehicle that looks as polished as the day you bought it. One of my favorite parts of publishing Parkland City Lifestyle is getting to know the people behind the businesses we feature. This month, we’re highlighting local entrepreneurs who help our community look and feel its best—from a boutique helping customers find pieces that fit their personality, to a salon creating confidence one appointment at a time, to a mobile detailing business that treats every vehicle with exceptional care. Their passion, dedication, and commitment to serving others are what make our community so special. I hope this issue inspires you to support a local business, try something new, and remember that style isn’t about keeping up with trends—it’s about being authentically you. When we invest in ourselves and in the businesses that make The Parkland unique, we’re helping build a stronger community for all of us. Thank you for supporting the local businesses that make The Parkland such a wonderful place to call home. I hope you enjoy this month’s issue! Yours truly,

WHERE Beauty Meets BELONGING The Beauty Loft changes more than hair color - they change the way you feel

Parkland City Lifestyle

ARTICLE BY ADDISON MOORE | PHOTOGRAPHY BY PARKLAND CITY LIFESTYLE AND TARA BOYLE A trip to the salon is rarely just about great hair. It's where confidence is restored, milestones are celebrated, and friendships are strengthened, one appointment at a time. That's the atmosphere waiting inside The Beauty Loft in downtown Park Hills, where every appointment begins with the same goal: making every guest who walks through the door feel like they belong. The moment you step inside, you're greeted with warm smiles, easy conversation, and the unmistakable feeling that you've walked into a place where everyone knows your name. Laughter bounces between styling chairs as friends catch up over fresh color appointments, while stylists celebrate promotions, engagements, pregnancies, and birthdays alongside clients they've known for years. It's a salon, but it often feels more like family. It's the kind of place where conversations pick up exactly where they left off weeks before. New guests are welcomed like old friends, while longtime clients settle comfortably into familiar chairs, catching up on everything from family vacations to Friday night football. The salon hums with energy yet somehow manages to feel calm…a balance that has become part of The Beauty Loft's signature experience. That feeling didn't happen by accident. This July, The Beauty Loft celebrated its third anniversary, but the vision behind the salon was more than a decade in the making. Owners Karen Black, Alicia Eden, and Racheal Lewis spent years working side by side before realizing they shared the same dream: creating a beautiful space where talented beauty professionals could thrive while every client felt completely at ease. "Yeah, it was kind of a group effort," one owner says. "We all just kind of had a pow-wow one night and said, 'Hey, let's do it.'" Years of working together gave the three owners something many business partners spend years trying to build; trust. They understood one another's strengths, shared the same values, and believed a salon could offer something more than exceptional

beauty services. It could become a place where relationships were built, confidence was restored, and everyone who walked through the door felt genuinely cared for. But the experience has never been just about beauty services. "You watch them grow," one stylist shares. "You do all their formals, and then they get their boyfriend, and then they get engaged and their wedding, and then they get babies. It's family for sure." Over time, appointment books become filled with something far more meaningful than names and time slots. They become filled with friendships. CONTINUED >

Conversations drift far beyond hair color and styling techniques. They become conversations about new careers, growing families, exciting promotions, unexpected diagnoses, heartbreak, hope, and dreams for what's next. The stylists have celebrated weddings, welcomed new babies, comforted clients through difficult seasons, and watched young girls grow into confident young women. Sometimes there are tears. Sometimes there is laughter. More often than not, there are hugs before clients walk out the door. "I think we are more invested in our clients emotionally," another stylist says. "I have some clients that give us hugs and say, 'Love you,' when they leave." That's exactly the environment the owners hoped to create. The Beauty Loft was intentionally designed to feel welcoming rather than intimidating. Whether someone is visiting for a dramatic transformation, routine maintenance, or simply an hour of self-care, the team wants every guest to relax the moment they arrive. "We want everybody to come in and feel like they just walked into their sister's house," one owner states. "They can just be loose and say what they want." That philosophy extends beyond the décor and the services offered. It shapes every conversation, every consultation, and every appointment. The team understands something that's easy to forget: beauty is deeply personal. Sitting in a salon chair requires trust. You're placing your appearance, and often your confidence, in someone else's hands. That's why consultations are never rushed, questions are always welcomed, and every guest is encouraged to feel comfortable being themselves. In a world that often feels rushed, The Beauty Loft offers something refreshingly simple; a place to slow down, reconnect, and leave feeling just a little brighter than when you arrived. "It's very personal," one stylist shares. "Everybody makes you feel welcome, and you don't feel like you don't belong." "We want you to look and feel great and be happy," the team says. "You're going to have the best experience." Beautiful hair may be what first brings someone through the door, but it's the conversations, encouragement, and genuine sense of belonging that keep clients coming back year after year. At The Beauty Loft, every appointment is about more than a fresh style. It's about helping people leave feeling seen, refreshed, and a little more confident than when they arrived. To schedule an appointment with one of The Beauty Loft's talented beauty professionals, call 573-327-9052.

For many women, shopping isn't always fun. Finding clothes that fit well, feel flattering, and reflect your personal style can quickly become frustrating, especially when you walk into a boutique and feel like you don't belong before you've even looked at the first rack. That's exactly the experience Kayla Barlow set out to change. When Barlow launched Kae & Co. in 2019, she wasn't chasing a lifelong dream of owning a boutique. At the time, she was working as a respiratory therapist at Children's Hospital and fully expected healthcare to be her lifelong career. But becoming a mother changed more than her schedule; it changed her perspective. She wanted more time with her family, but she also wanted to build something meaningful. After a disappointing shopping experience where she struggled to find clothing that fit, she realized she wasn't alone. Many women had experienced the same frustration. That moment became the foundation for what Kae & Co. is today: a boutique where women of every age, every size, and every stage of life feel welcomed the moment they walk through the door. "We are very welcoming," Barlow says. "Stores can be scary to walk into, and this is supposed to be a place of comfort where a customer can take time and unwind." Step inside Kae & Co., and it's easy to see that philosophy in action. Thoughtfully curated displays, friendly conversations, and styles designed for real women create an atmosphere that feels approachable rather than intimidating. It's a place where customers are encouraged to browse at their own pace, ask questions, and leave feeling better than when they arrived. What began as an online side business with a booth inside Antique Treasures Flea Market has grown into

two thriving storefronts serving women throughout the Parkland area. Kae & Co. opened its first brick-and-mortar location in Desloge in April 2020 before expanding into downtown Farmington in March 2026. Growth, however, has never changed the boutique's purpose. "I tell my employees when I hire them, we have three goals," Barlow says. "We want someone to come in and feel welcomed, whatever age or size they are. I want them to be able to find something. We want to be size inclusive. I also want women to just be able to walk in the doors and just forget." Those goals influence every decision made inside the boutique. From thoughtfully selected inventory to approachable pricing, Barlow believes every woman deserves access to stylish clothing without feeling pressured to spend beyond her budget. "We are breaking the stigma that you need to spend an arm and a leg when you go into a boutique." Rather than focusing on a single trend or aesthetic, Kae & Co. embraces variety. Whether someone is shopping for a job interview, a weekend getaway, a special event, or simply refreshing her everyday wardrobe, Barlow wants every customer to find something that fits both her lifestyle and her personality. Keeping the boutique fresh means staying connected to what women are actually wearing.

Barlow follows emerging fashion trends through social media, online retailers, and conversations with her customers, always asking herself one simple question: Would my customers love this? "I just try and put myself in my customers' position and think about what they are looking at, and it kind of just blossoms from there." While carefully selected clothing fills the racks, Barlow says the boutique's greatest success has been built by the people around her. She credits her family, her husband, her manager Kirsten, and the loyal customers who have supported Kae & Co. since its earliest days. Many of those customers have become friends, returning season after season and bringing daughters, sisters, and friends along with them. What started as a side project has become something far greater than she ever imagined. "I didn't really have a good vision," Barlow states, "but it has surpassed everything that I have dreamed of." Today, Kae & Co. continues to grow through its website, mobile app, and TikTok Shop, but Barlow's mission hasn't changed. She still wants every woman who walks through the door to feel seen, find something she loves, and leave with a little more confidence than when she arrived. Because the best style isn't about chasing trends or filling your closet. It's about finding pieces that help you feel comfortable, confident, and completely yourself.

“I really did it for my kids; I couldn’t have dreamed of the support system from the community.”

Style isn't always about designer labels, polished shoes, or the newest luxury vehicle. Sometimes, it's found in the way we care for what we've already been given. For Caleb Dakdok, owner of Washed Clean Detailing, a freshly detailed vehicle is about far more than a glossy finish. Every spotless dashboard, restored paint finish, and meticulously cleaned interior reflects something much deeper than craftsmanship alone. It reflects stewardship, integrity, and a commitment to honoring both his customers and God through the work of his hands. For Caleb, excellence isn't an upgrade, it's the standard. "It's more of a fresh start," he says. "I look into the places that many people won't look at for maybe five years. It helps the customer so they don't have to buy a new car." Whether he's restoring a family's daily driver, a weekend boat, or a well-traveled RV, Caleb approaches every project with the same level of care. He believes people have worked hard for what they own, and caring for those investments is one of the greatest ways he can serve them. That philosophy didn't begin with a business plan. It began with faith. Years ago, Caleb was living in Florida, working his way up from the wash bay to assistant manager at a local car wash while earning his associate degree from the State College of Florida. By every measure, life seemed to be moving in the right direction. Then he felt God calling him somewhere unexpected. Trusting that calling meant leaving behind familiarity, relocating to southeast Missouri, and moving back into his parents' garage. It wasn't the path he had envisioned, but it became the foundation for the life, and the business he believes God was preparing him for all along. "It started in my parents' garage, after resetting my life," Caleb says. "Now it's an on-demand detailing service." Today, what started in a garage has grown into a thriving business built on craftsmanship, trust, and genuine care for every customer. But the quality of Caleb's work is only part of the story. For Caleb, every appointment is an opportunity to serve someone with honesty, excellence, and genuine respect. "I just make sure that their hard-earned money is going to the right place, to someone who cares about their health, their well-being, their money, and their car." That commitment has become the signature style of his business. Not flashy. Not hurried. Simply honest craftsmanship performed with purpose. CONTINUED >

His faith isn't something reserved for Sundays or saved for conversations inside church walls. It's woven into every customer interaction, every recommendation he makes, and every detail he refuses to overlook. Rather than simply telling people what he believes, Caleb hopes they experience it through the way they're treated. "The main focus of the company must be on God," Caleb says. "It is incredible what God has been able to do for me." He doesn't believe every appointment requires a sermon. Sometimes the strongest testimony is simply showing up on time, doing exceptional work, treating people fairly, and leaving something better than he found it. That mindset has earned him a loyal customer base throughout southeast Missouri and fueled steady growth during the company's

first year in business. As demand continues to increase, Caleb hopes to expand his team while protecting the values that made Washed Clean Detailing successful from the very beginning. For Caleb, the name "Washed Clean" has always represented something bigger than spotless vehicles. It reflects the fresh starts, second chances, and quiet faith that have shaped both his life and his business. Every detail completed with care, every handshake, and every satisfied customer is another opportunity to honor God through honest work and wholehearted service. Because style isn't measured by what you drive. It's reflected in how you serve. It's revealed in the pride you take in your work. And sometimes, the most lasting impression isn't left by a perfectly polished vehicle, but by the character of the person who polished it.

Washed Clean Detailing Washed Clean Detailing offers professional mobile detailing throughout southeast Missouri, serving cars, trucks, SUVs, boats, RVs, and more. Caleb brings his equipment and expertise directly to each customer, allowing busy families to enjoy professional detailing from the comfort of home, often completing multiple vehicles during a single visit.

I love family-style meals such as a crab boil this time of year. The food is the star of the show and a vital part of the tablescape – decor optional! Additional elements included here are a large paper-sail, light blue taper candles, a few large flowers, and heavy white rope as nautical accents. You can also use other elements such as large seashells, coral or seaglass. Use whatever you have on hand that nods to the sea.

Fill a large stock pot halfway with cold water. Season with lemon peels, bay leaves, black pepper, red pepper flakes, Old Bay Seasoning, and garlic powder. Bring to a boil and add crab legs, sausage, potatoes, and corn until cooked. Strain water and serve on a large galvanized tray, newspaper or parchment paper – enjoy your meal with guests, family style! Give each guest a bowl of garlic butter for dipping as well as lemons for squeezing (wrapped in cheesecloth and tied with twine to avoid seeds). Include special beverages and desserts such as a tiered lemon cake or frozen treat to beat the heat. For full instructions visit the blog at silvertoothhome.com/blog/crabboil. Enjoy!
