Explore The Parkland Being situated in the middle of the country comes with many advantages. We get to experience the fullness of all the seasons, and we are surrounded by eight states that we can easily visit, each one offering a plethora experiences only hours away. What a benefit! The area we all call home is known as The Parkland – and for good reason. The name speaks for itself. We are called The Parkland because we are surrounded by beautiful state parks that people from all over the country come to enjoy. The list of destinations goes on and on and I for one, feel privileged to be nestled in this pocket of Southern Missouri, where we have no shortage of things to see and do. You may have visited some of these hot spots and some may be staples that your families have enjoyed for generations, but as I gaze at our map, I discover more and more gems right here in our backyard and am overwhelmed with just how many things there are to explore – right here in our footprint. It doesn’t take long to derive a bucket list of must-see places, all within an hour or so of the region we call home. In this issue, we highlight just a few of these places that stand out in their purpose and mission and we share their stories of legacy, nostalgia and majesty. Are you looking for a new spot to visit this summer? Here are some of the wonderful attractions you will find close by; Fun places to eat – The Station in Fredericktown, Baylee Jo’s BBQ in Ironton, Audubon’s in Ste. Genevieve, Junction Café in Desoto, Thee Abbey Kitchen in Arcadia Valley, Mary Jane’s in Perryville, Dew Drop Inn in Bloomsdale Fun spots to enjoy the outdoors - Shepherd Mountain Bike Park, Amidon Memorial Conservation Area, Elephant Rocks State Park, Hawn State Park, Johnson’s Shut-Ins State Park, Lake Wappepello State Park, Pickle Springs Natural Area, Sam A. “Every brick, every window, it all means something to us. This isn’t just a venue; it’s part of our story, too.” On a quiet stretch of Church Street in Bonne Terre, Missouri, a century-old chapel and its surrounding buildings have found new life, and purpose, as The Iron Knot; the town’s newest wedding and event venue. With its curated charm, meticulous renovations, and a story rooted in history and hometown pride, The Iron Knot is more than a place to say “I do.” It’s a testament to the history and community of Bonne Terre, and is firmly situated as a long standing staple. A place once designed to congregate for liturgy is now one of celebration and fellowship that serves all cultural and religious denominations. Their journey began in 2023, when Bonne Terre natives Josh and Kindsey Black purchased the historic First Congregational Church—a stunning structure originally built in 1908 by industrialist Charles B. Parsons. Inspired by a European church he once visited, Parsons recreated
a scaled-down version right in the heart of Bonne Terre. With its intricate Tiffany stained-glass windows and classic lines, the church stood as a symbol of artistry and reverence for more than a century. Just three months after acquiring the church, the Blacks purchased the neighboring Masonic Lodge. The two buildings, considered historic anchors of Church Street, had never been privately owned - until now. The Lodge, a stately brick building once owned exclusively by the Freemasons, held decades of local lore and tradition. With its towering ceilings, original woodwork, and commanding presence, it now complements the chapel as part of a multi-building campus designed to host life’s most meaningful moments. Renovating the entire compound took about eight months, and the Black’s breathed new life into each space while thoughtfully preserving its rich history. Today, The Iron Knot is comprised of CONTINUED > JULY 2 0 2 5 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM/PAR KL A N D M O

multiple restored buildings, all within steps of each other: a non-denominational chapel, an elegant reception hall, a bridal suite, a groom’s suite, a charming on-site cottage, and the grand Lodge itself. The layout invites couples and guests to immerse themselves in an experience that’s both seamless and unforgettable. The Iron Knot’s lodge and chapel, each bearing its own historic charm, offer exceptional spaces for weddings and other events. The chapel, originally the First Congregational Church, comfortably seats around 120 guests amid its iconic Tiffany-style stained-glass windows, dark wood floors, vintage pipe organ, and classic woodwork. As a non-denominational sanctuary with timeless architecture, it provides a meaningful setting for ceremonies. Adjoining the chapel is a warm and inviting reception hall where guests can gather beneath preserved architectural details for dinner, toasts, or mingling. Just across Church Street, the lodge delivers flexibility and space: it accommodates up to 170 seated guests (or 150 with a dance floor), featuring soaring ceilings, elegant brickwork, and a raised stage ideal for live music or presentations. And soon, a third event space will open beneath the Lodge, adding even more flexibility for showers, dinners, or smaller private gatherings. Together, these buildings form a vibrant campus of historic venues—just steps apart—perfectly suited for weddings, showers, dinners, or special celebrations of any size. The accommodations are as inviting as the setting. The cottage sleeps up to eleven and features a six-person hot tub for unwinding after a day of festivities. The groom’s suite offers a quiet, cozy
retreat for two. All lodging options are listed on Airbnb and Vrbo, making it easy for guests and family members to settle in, and stay close. Whether hosting a traditional wedding or a more intimate micro-wedding, couples enjoy full access to the entire property. But The Iron Knot is more than a venue. It's a homegrown vision brought to life with sentiment and care. Josh still remembers riding his bike past these same buildings as a kid, never imagining they might one day be his. “We’re not afraid to fail, so why not?” he says. “We’re chance takers, and we know we’ll do it right.” And that’s just what they did; took a leap of faith and poured their hearts into every detail. Throughout the year, The Iron Knot hosts more than just weddings. From baby showers and celebration dinners, to luncheons and meetings, the venue offers a warm, welcoming space for gatherings of all kinds. October may mark the height of wedding season, but their calendar stays booked year-round, accommodating events for all traditions, backgrounds, and beliefs. “Come as you are” isn’t just a motto – it’s a promise. Kindsey and Josh are intentional with their time and energy, and strive to build not just a business, but a legacy. They’re invested in their community, deeply rooted in their faith, and passionate about supporting other small businesses. What they’ve created at The Iron Knot is more than a venue – it’s a destination, a gathering place, and a love letter to their hometown. Whether you're walking down the aisle, gathering with loved ones, or simply needing a weekend getaway, The Iron Knot invites you in with open arms. It's a place where love is celebrated, memories are made, and history finds a beautiful new chapter.

HOST AN OUTDOOR Summer Dinner Party
HOSTING TIPS FROM AMY TINNIN A CUP FULL OF SASS ARTICLE BY AMY TINNIN | PHOTOGRAPHY BY ASHLEY MICHELE PHOTOGRAPHY

H OST IN G T IP S | HO ME + D E SIGN
Hosting an outdoor dinner party is a great way to bring people together this time of the year. Here are a few things I do when hosting and creating a pretty, yet effortless, tablescape.
LAYER IN TEXTURE AND COLOR
Adding a tablecloth, a table runner, or placemats can bring in texture, especially on a plain outdoor table. Linen or woven materials work well for summer, and napkins are a fun way to add a pop of color.
CENTER PIECE
To fill the empty space in the middle of your table, add a centerpiece. This gives it a focal point and ties everything together. Try using a wooden tray filled with fresh fruit, along with sprigs of rosemary for a touch of greenery and fragrance. I love how it brings warmth and texture without being overly formal.
ADD SMALL DETAILS
Small details go a long way. Things like glass carafes filled with fresh fruit, such as cucumber and lemon water. This adds a refreshing option that your guests can easily access, while the fresh fruit adds flavor and another pop of color to the table. You can also sit mini potted succulents around the table to create a layered look with your linens. These simple touches will add personality and make the setup feel intentional.
LIGHTING
Even if it's not dark outside, lighting can play a key part in creating an ambience. String lights are a great addition to your outdoor area. Rechargeable table lamps are also an excellent option for giving off a warm, cozy glow without needing an outlet.
MUSIC
I like to create a music playlist ahead of time that fits the vibe of the night—something like soft jazz, acoustic sounds, or even a touch of French café music. If you're using a Bluetooth speaker, keep the volume low so it blends into the background to make everything feel more relaxed. Hosting is one of my love languages, and I’m convinced it doesn’t have to be complicated to be meaningful. JULY 2 0 2 5 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM/PAR KL A N D M O

Explore Crown Ridge Tiger Sanctuary ARTICLE BY KAYLE NEPHEW

Looking for your next unforgettable adventure? Just a short drive from Farmington lies a place where wild hearts meet compassionate care— where you can explore the majesty of tigers like never before. Welcome to Crown Ridge Tiger Sanctuary, a nonprofit haven where big cats once abused, neglected, and exploited, finally find peace, permanence, and purpose. Set against the serene backdrop of Ste. Genevieve County, Crown Ridge doesn’t offer your typical wildlife experience. This isn’t a zoo, a roadside attraction, or a photo-op tourist trap. As an accredited Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries facility, Crown Ridge adheres to very specific criteria to maintain the title of a true sanctuary - one that exists solely for the benefit of the animals. Here, there’s no breeding, no buying, selling, or trading, and no public contact. It’s a place entirely motivated by the idea of giving animals what they deserve: lifelong safety, space, dignity, and specialized care. Currently, three rescued tigers call Crown Ridge home: Sebastian, Shakira, and Thor. Each cat has a story, a spirit, and a personality as vivid as their stripes. Sebastian, rescued from the infamous Tiger King facility around three and a half years ago, is a massive, easygoing guy with a fondness for making muddy messes. His keepers say he’s a gentle giant who prefers the company of women and has a flair for vocalizing his excitement, especially around mealtime. If you’re lucky, you’ll catch him showing off with a thunderous roar that echoes across the sanctuary. Shakira, a 15-year-old female rescued from a defunct zoo in Kansas, is as complex as she is beautiful. Initially shy, she’s slowly opened up to caretakers over time. Her behavior can swing from bashful to playful, depending on her mood, and her curiosity shines when she feels safe and engaged. Watching her evolve is a testament to the healing power of sanctuary life. Then there’s Thor—the matriarch of the sanctuary at 23 years old. Rescued in 2004 from a roadside zoo near
Springfield, she arrived with several other big cats, most of whom have since passed from age-related conditions. Thor was once known for being stubborn and fiercely independent, but she has grown increasingly cooperative and serene in her golden years. Her calm presence is a favorite amongst staff and guests alike. What’s most remarkable is the quality of life these tigers now enjoy—long, healthy lives supported by the exceptional care they receive each day. In fact, tigers that reside in accredited sanctuaries, like Crown Ridge, often live longer than those in zoos or in the wild. With specialized diets, routine medications, daily health checks, and enrichment activities that keep them mentally and physically engaged, the tigers are doing more than just getting by—they’re truly thriving. Visitors can explore the sanctuary through public walking tours offered Thursday through Sunday. These guided experiences give guests a chance to see the tigers up close and learn about their care, their histories, and the greater mission of Crown Ridge. Specialty tours are also available by reservation—like the VIP Feeding Tour, or the Early Bird Tour that lets you catch the cats during their most active hours. Educational group tours are also a hit with schools, scout troops, and curious minds of all ages. And if a single afternoon doesn’t satisfy your feline fix, guests can spend the night at the sanctuary. Three buildings offer overnight accommodations, including private condos and guesthouse-style lodging. Each stay includes a general tour, light breakfast, and the freedom to visit the tigers throughout your stay. With the cats most active in the cool hours of morning and evening, your best chance for a roar-filled memory might be right outside your door at sunrise. Crown Ridge also hosts several family-friendly events throughout the year, including International Tiger Day in July (complete with themed enrichment, food trucks, games, and more), the spooky Roar Fest in October, a springtime Easter Egg Hunt, and a cozy Holiday Lights celebration in CONTINUED >

“The goal isn’t just to care for these three magnificent tigers—it’s to raise awareness about the captive wildlife crisis and inspire a world where sanctuaries like Crown Ridge aren’t needed anymore.” December with crafts, cocoa, music, and of course, tigers. Crown Ridge relies heavily on community support to operate. As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, the sanctuary receives no government funding. Instead, it maintains and grows by way of donations, lodging and tour revenue, and the generosity of volunteers and interns. Are you a hunter? You can donate meat during hunting season; just reach out to John Madigan at the sanctuary to schedule your drop off. Not a hunter? Contribute through the sanctuary’s Amazon Wishlist, or even “Adopt-ACat” to symbolically support the tigers. The volunteer program is a great way to get involved hands-on, whether you’re helping with events, landscaping, or behind-the-scenes tasks. For college students and recent grads, internships offer a unique chance to live on-site while assisting in feeding, leading tours, and gaining real first-hand experience in animal care and nonprofit operations. Every visit, and every dollar makes a difference. In the heart of Ste. Genevieve County, hidden among the lush green hills of Bloomsdale, lies a destination that feels more like the French countryside than rural Missouri. Baetje Farms, a local gem with global recognition, is producing some of the most award-winning goat cheese in the world—and they’re doing it with heart, heritage, and a persistent dedication to quality. The story begins like many great ones do: with a surprise. In 1998, Veronica Baetje walked into a farm auction intending to buy a cow and walked out with a goat instead. That goat, named Cookie, would change the course of her life and eventually shape the future of artisanal cheesemaking in the Midwest. Alongside her husband Steve, Veronica began crafting goat cheese in small batches, inspired by traditional European techniques and a desire to create something beautiful and nourishing, cultivated from the land they loved. Their early experiments paid off immediately. The couple debuted their first heartshaped chèvre at the St. Louis Wine Festival and sold out within hours. What began as a passion project quickly evolved into a business with a devout following. Baetje Farms transitioned from its original owners, Steve and Veronica Baetje, to new ownership in October of 2018. The farm and creamery were acquired by the TAG Development Team, an investment collective comprising siblings and Bloomsdale entrepreneurs Cara Naeger, RJ Clements, and Eric Clements. The transition was seamless, and as of today, Baetje Farms cheeses have earned more than 70 national and international awards, including multiple top honors from the American Cheese Society and the prestigious World Cheese Awards. But perhaps the most remarkable thing about Baetje Farms is that while their reputation continues to grow far and wide, their approach remains deeply rooted in thoughtful, intentional craftsmanship. Everything begins with the goats. Raised on a diet of locally grown alfalfa and clean, filtered spring water, the animals at Baetje Farms are cared for with respect and adoration. There are no growth hormones here—just happy, healthy goats producing milk that’s rich, clean, and remarkably consistent. That milk is then transformed in a pristine, state-of-the-art creamery right on the farm, using imported French and Danish cheese cultures, and a whole lot of know-how. The result is a portfolio of cheeses as diverse as they are delicious. Their flagship cheese, Bloomsdale, is a soft-ripened goat cheese inspired by the classic French Valençay, rolled in pine ash and sea salt and aged to develop a bloom of delicate white mold. The flavor is earthy and complex, with hints of mushroom and subtle blue cheese notes as it matures. It’s a showstopper, both visually and on the palate, and has become a symbol of the Baetje legacy. From there, the selections only grow more intriguing. Coeur du Clos, a Camembert-style goat cheese, offers a creamy paste with a firm, chewy rind and flavor notes ranging from sweet custard to roasted walnuts and forest mushrooms. Their Amoureux, inspired by the French Morbier, features a striking line of ash through its center and a nutty, savory flavor that pairs beautifully with bold red wine. Beer Washed Vallée, one of their more playful creations, is a semi-soft cheese washed in a whiskey stout brewed in Kansas City and finished with an amber rind that tastes as rich as it looks.
B A E TJ E F A R M S Crafting Baetje’s award-winning goat cheese begins with happy, pasture-raised goats and ends in a state-of-the-art creamery. Using fresh milk, imported cultures, and traditional French techniques, each cheese is carefully aged under precise conditions. The result? Pure artisan perfection—creamy, complex, and irresistibly flavorful. It’s a labor of love, from farm to fromage.

“ We w a n t Ba et je Far m s to be a destin at ion wh e re people experience artisan cheese, connect with the l a n d , a n d fa l l in love with agritourism i n M i s s o u r i .” And then there are the spreads. Designed for everyday indulgence, these goat cheese spreads deliver bold flavor with a luxurious texture. From the bright, herbal notes of Garlic & Chives and Herb de Provence to the sweet and spicy combination of Sweet Jalapeño made with Lucky Lola’s Sweet Jalapeno Heat, every variety presents its own personality. The Bavarian Lemon Curd is a dreamy, citrus-kissed delight reminiscent of lemon cheesecake, while the Dark Chocolate Raspberry could be likened to dessert in a jar. Seasonal flavors like Pumpkin Walnut round out the collection with cozy, spiced richness that makes fall feel like a culinary celebration. Baetje Farms has grown beyond cheese, too. The property now includes five elegantly designed tiny homes for overnight stays, each featuring white oak floors, marble-tiled bathrooms, and sweeping views of the countryside. Guests can take guided tours of the farm Tuesday through Thursday, getting an up-close look at the goats, the creamery, and of course, the cheese. Tastings are included, and if you’re lucky, you’ll catch the unmistakable aroma of ripening cheese in the aging cave. For those planning a wedding or celebration, Baetje offers a charming space surrounded by nature and filled with rustic elegance, The Artisan. It’s a place where cheese is more than a menu item—it’s a part of a story, one that weaves into the very art of cultivation and inspires an appetite for decadence and agritourism. At Baetje Farms, tradition and innovation live side by side. Every wheel, wedge, and spread tells a story of care, craftsmanship, and an appreciation for the land they love. Whether you’re visiting for a tour, staying for the weekend, or simply picking up a wedge of Bloomsdale from your local market, you’re tasting something rare: a little bit of France, made right here in Missouri.
