LIFESTYLE LETTER

Health & Wellness The start of a new year is often filled with excitement and a sense of renewal. It’s a time to set new goals, embrace fresh opportunities, and dream about the year ahead. For many, though, January can also bring a sense of pressure—a reminder of resolutions left unfulfilled or the weight of expectations. This issue of Parkland City Lifestyle was crafted with the goal of offering something different: inspiration for long-term, sustainable improvements in physical, emotional, and mental health. Wellness isn’t just about physical fitness. It’s about having a fit mind and healthy spirit; things we often leave off our list of priorities. We are excited to share some innovative ways that The Parkland fosters that wellness and brings new meaning to the word, “health”. Life isn’t about perfection; it’s about consistency. Whether it’s in business, health, or relationships, it’s not what you do occasionally that makes the difference—it’s what you do most of the time. Consider this: you wouldn’t go on vacation every day, but planning a couple of trips each year is a realistic and restorative goal. Similarly, indulging in a rich dessert isn’t an everyday event, but it’s a delicious treat now and then. Our consistent approach needs applied in every area of wellness. Our souls, our minds and our bodies are all deserving of this attention. This year, focus on small, consistent actions that lead to a more balanced and fulfilling life. Join a fitness class, carve out moments for rest, get a check-up, grab a massage and don’t forget to savor life’s pleasures. It’s the “most of the time” choices that shape our lives. Here’s to a healthy, happy new year—we’re rooting for you!

When Page Pilates opened its doors in Festus on July 7, 2025, it wasn’t simply the launch of a new fitness studio—it was the start of something deeply personal, intentional, and community-centered. Founder, Maggie Page, fell in love with mat Pilates in college, however the dream of a studio didn’t take root until she started taking reformer classes in Sunset Hills. She couldn’t believe the positive impact it had on her both physically and mentally. Likewise, for Farmington owner Danielle Page, Pilates had served as a bridge back to herself. After welcoming her second child, she found her body feeling foreign. What started as a way to regain strength, quietly shifted into something more meaningful. The practice gave her space to breathe again. It offered movement that was gentle yet challenging, restorative yet invigorating. Most importantly, it reminded her that feeling at home in her own body was possible. That moment of rediscovery changed everything. After spending many years teaching middle school, Maggie began to feel a pull toward something new; inspired to

create a space where others could also experience the same renewal she had found. After training through STOTT PILATES, she stepped away from the classroom and into her next chapter: Page Pilates. A studio built to welcome every body, every season of life, and every level of ability. From the beginning, Page Pilates has embraced an approach rooted in mindfulness, intention, and breathwork. Classes are centered around the Reformer, a machine that looks intimidating until you step onto it and realize it is one of the most supportive pieces of equipment you’ll ever use. The springs and straps allow clients to adjust resistance to what feels best for their bodies. Movements are low impact but deeply effective, strengthening the core, improving posture, enhancing mobility, and activating muscles that often go unnoticed. It is movement that encourages presence. It is strength that comes from alignment. And it is a practice that teaches people to move through the world with more awareness, more grace, and more control. Inside the studio, everything is designed to feel accessible. Classes are intentionally capped at eight clients so instructors can offer personalized guidance, modifications, and support. The moment someone walks through the door, whether it’s their first class or their fiftieth, the staff welcomes them by name. New clients meet their instructor, share any injuries or concerns, learn the basics of the equipment, and begin class laying down, starting with intentional breathing. That first inhale sets the tone for the class ahead: CONTINUED >

“This studio isn’t about perfection; it’s about presence. It’s about honoring your body, listening to it, and learning to trust it. It’s about being surrounded by a team and a community who believe that strength is not just something you build in your muscles— it’s something you build in your life.” JANUARY 2 0 2 6 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . mindful, grounded, and focused. From there, stretches warm the body, footwork anchors the practice, and a thoughtful flow unfolds over the next 50 minutes—strengthening, lengthening, and reconnecting from the inside out. For Maggie, one of the most rewarding parts of this work has been watching her clients transform. Clients walk in nervous, yet curious, but they leave stronger, and more confident. Many begin to adopt healthier habits outside the studio, feeling inspired to move with more intention in their daily lives. Pilates becomes more than a workout. It becomes a lifestyle—one rooted in longevity, mobility, and the belief that aging can be both strong and graceful. As the Festus studio quickly became a local favorite, the demand for more classes began to grow. With seven instructors, four front desk team members, and an atmosphere built on genuine inclusivity, it didn’t take long for Danielle and Maggie to realize that Page Pilates was ready to expand its reach. In early 2026, Page Pilates will open its second location in Farmington led by Maggie’s sister, Danielle Page, who received her training through The Mixed Method. News of the second location spread like wildfire and has quickly become one of the most eagerly anticipated studio openings in the area. Farmington has already wrapped its arms around the brand with warmth and excitement, and the new space will bring all the pillars of the Festus experience: Reformer classes seven days a week, small groups, individualized support, and a team dedicated to meeting clients exactly where they are. Farmington will begin with Reformer Pilates, with long-term plans to expand into additional modalities as the community grows. With Maggie and Danielle leading the way, five more instructors are set to join the team, each carefully selected for their compassion, skill, and ability to create an uplifting environment. The sister’s goal is simple: deepen their roots, continue building genuine relationships, and offer an intuitive experience that helps people reconnect with themselves in a way that feels empowering yet sustainable. Pilates is now one of the fastest-growing practices in the country. At a time when many workouts push people to the point of

16

burnout, Pilates invites people to move with intention, and to strengthen their bodies while reducing their risk of injury. It teaches alignment, breath control, pelvic floor stability, and deep core engagement. It protects joints, reduces pain, and offers a path to long-term mobility. For countless individuals at Page Pilates, it has become a lifeline: a place to heal, rebuild, and rediscover confidence they didn’t know they had lost. As Page Pilates prepares to open its doors in Farmington, the mission remains unchanged, and the message behind every class, every movement, and every interaction will be mirrored by their Festus location. For anyone searching for a place to begin and a way to reconnect, you’ll find a community that empowers you to move boldly and breathe deeply, at Page Pilates. Here, movement becomes grounding, breath becomes clarity, and your body becomes a home you can trust again.

HOW KELLI KERNON LISTENS TO THE HEARTLAND

ARTICLE BY KAYLE NEPHEW PHOTOGRAPHY BY STEPHANIE ZARICOR

When you sit with Kelli Kernon, you quickly understand that hearing, to her, is more than a sense, it’s how we stay connected to the people we love. It’s the sound of a grandchild’s laughter, a whispered joke or the way a spouse calls your name at the end of a long day. Hearing is the pathway to relationships and connection. To lose it, she says, quietly unravels the parts of life that make us feel human. Eighteen years ago, Kelli stepped into her father’s hearing practice, expecting to help where needed. Instead, she discovered her calling. She witnessed people walk in frustrated, isolated, or embarrassed, and watched them walk out lighter (sometimes in tears) because they could finally participate in the world around them again. That transformation became the anchor of her career, and eventually, her life’s mission. After the sudden loss of her brother and her father’s decision to step back, Kelli took ownership of five Heartland Hearing Care locations on September 1, 2024. It was a difficult transition, but it also gave her the chance to honor her family’s legacy by building a practice rooted in compassion, education, and exceptionally personalized care. Today, Heartland serves patients across Farmington, Crystal City, South County, Wentzville, Washington, and St. Clair. Patients notice the difference immediately. Appointments at Heartland don’t feel transactional — they feel intimate. Kelli sits beside her patients, not across from them, and explains everything with warmth and clarity. There’s no pressure, no sales pitch, no rush. Just a genuine desire to help people regain their identity. She teaches every patient that we don’t hear with our ears alone; we hear with our brain. When hearing declines, the brain works harder to fill in missing pieces, leading to exhaustion, confusion, and withdrawal from social interactions. Many people don’t realize this as it's happening — they simply adapt, avoid conversations, or compensate to connect with the world around them. Early intervention is crucial, not only for hearing clarity but for protecting cognitive health. For adults in their forties, Kelli recommends CONTINUED >

a baseline exam; for those with early signs of loss, yearly monitoring can preserve word recognition and mental sharpness for years to come. Modern hearing technology has transformed what is possible, and Heartland leads the way with today’s most advanced options. Starkey’s AI-driven instruments adapt to challenging environments, boost speech clarity, track wellness, detect falls, and restore spatial awareness in ways that feel natural and intuitive. The difference is often immediate. Most devices arrive within 24 hours, and patients are usually fitted within 48, beginning a gentle adjustment period that allows the brain to acclimate without overwhelming their nervous system. The impact is often profound. One of Kelli’s patients, who is both significantly deaf and blind, travels nearly two hours from Illinois because of the trusting relationship they’ve built. For years, she could only grasp fragments of sentences. After being fit with new technology, she held her first full conversation. Not pieces. No guesswork. A real conversation — a moment Kelli describes as unforgettable. Another patient, a truck driver, summed it up simply: “I never realized how much life was happening around me until you fit me with these.”

20

EXP E RT H E LP | HEALTH + WE LLN E SS

These moments fuel her purpose. They’re why she keeps Heartland’s pricing accessible, honors most insurance, and maintains competitive rates for her private-pay clients. They’re why she continues to stay educated on the latest technologies available. But most of all, they’re why every person who walks into Heartland Hearing Care feels valued; because Kelli never forgets the human being behind each test result. Kelli eagerly attends educational summits and conferences, leaving her mark on the industry by earning accolades like Starkey’s CEO Circle, and multiple “Best Of” awards for Heartland Hearing Care locations. Hearing loss rarely announces itself. It creeps in quietly, and people adjust without realizing how much they’re losing. Helping someone you love take that first step, encouraging them to schedule a baseline exam, or simply acknowledging their struggle with empathy, can give them back the moments they didn’t know they’d been missing. Kelli says it often: “Hear better, live better.” For countless families across the Parkland, that promise becomes reality the moment they walk through Heartland Hearing’s doors.

BUILDING HEALTHIER HEAR FROM NASM-CERTIFIED PERSONAL TRAINER ABOUT ESTABLISHING THE BEST HABITS ARTICLE BY KRISTIN BURNELL

The new year is a classic kickoff to start fresh and build many resolutions that we all hope stick around. How many times do your resolutions fall through each year? It can be challenging to build new habits and switch up routines if you’re looking for a change. That’s why we rounded up the best advice to establishing habits and making them stay for good. We spoke with Danielle Johnston, National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM)-certified personal trainer and aspiring kinesiologist, who broke down her top tips to maintaining healthy habits this new year.

24

H OW TO | HEALTH + WELLN E SS

START WITH A SMALL HABIT AND MAKE IT SOMETHING YOU ENJOY

HABITS

Think 1-3 things maximum and then give yourself at least a month or two to apply the change. If you like to eat and cook, maybe try a new recipe or browse a cookbook in the library or bookstore for inspiration. If you like fashion, maybe try cleaning out a section of your closet (i.e. tops, bottoms, shoes, etc) to make way for 1 new piece. If you like being outdoors, maybe you try adding in just a 5 minute walk down the road.

IF YOU MISS A DAY, TRY AGAIN

If you miss a day or make a mistake with whatever resolution you’re working on, take that next opportunity to try again. Danielle uses the goal to eat healthier as an example. Health can be interpreted in many different ways but if you can take the small first step of looking at ingredients, that alone can make a world’s difference in the recipe you use so maybe you don’t even have to alter or substitute it. Or if your goal is to snack less but one day you snack more, don’t wave the flag and sabotage your efforts. Take a minute to breathe through the moment and then move on, enjoying the ebb and flow of health instead of going all in or nothing. Starting small allows you to adjust everyday habits that will, with time, transition to lifestyle changes.

CREATE 3 DIFFERENT TYPES OF RESOLUTIONS

Danielle says to create 1 health resolution, 1 personal resolution, and 1 professional resolution as it is the best format to better yourself in multiple realms instead of just physical health. Too often, we get caught up in this “New Year New Me” mindset and create a list of things you want to change or start doing. But as they get lost in the busy to-do list of life and we forget,

“The new year is a classic kickoff to start fresh and build many resolutions that we all hope stick around.” we can also feel like a failure and revert to “I’ll try again tomorrow or next year.” But what if you don’t have to start over, just keep going.

TRACK YOUR PROGRESS AND VISUALIZE YOUR FUTURE

Whether you keep a notebook of your habit building, or keep track on your phone, it is important to acknowledge the personal progress made. This will also help you see the future that you want to build as you make more desirable changes in your life. If you want to track how you feel after working out, it will serve as a reflection on the progress made through what has been written down. This will encourage you to continue pushing for your goals!

SOLE to SOUL Exploring the Power of Reflexology through Judith Wakefield’s Gifted Hands ARTICLE BY KAYLE NEPHEW PHOTOGRAPHY BY STEPHANIE ZARICOR

Healing can take many forms, but for Judith Wakefield, owner of Sole to Soul Massage Therapy in Farmington, it has never been a job—she was born to help others. Long before she learned the intricate maps of the feet and the pathways of the body’s energy, she felt something deeper stirring in her. “My personal life is grounded in thankfulness, overflowing with God’s love and divine light,” she says. “That’s what leads me in this work. I’ve always been led by God’s calling.” Today, Judith is a licensed massage therapist who specializes in Reflexology. She offers a sanctuary for those seeking balance, renewal, and relief. The moment a client steps into her space, she invites them not just to relax, but to realign— with their breath, their emotions, and the stories their body has been quietly hiding. Through hands-on, intuitive therapy and gentle presence, Judith helps people unravel the tension they’ve carried for far too long. Reflexology lies at the heart of her practice. This form of targeted massage is built on the belief that specific points in the feet, hands, and head correspond to major organs and systems within the body. As Judith explains, “Our bodies have a complicated way of communicating with us. Reflexology helps us understand what our bodies are trying to say.” By applying intentional pressure to these points, she works to ease anxiety, reduce swelling, improve circulation, balance the immune system, and calm the nervous system. Clients often leave feeling lighter from the released tension.

What Judith offers extends beyond physical relief. Her work blends ancient wisdom with intuitive understanding. She incorporates meridian theory to assess the body's physical and emotional needs. Rather than separating the emotional from the physical, Judith sees them as inseparable threads in the same woven story. CONTINUED >

Color therapy is one of the most unique aspects of her practice, something she describes as both intuitive and deeply revealing. As she gently works through the meridian pathways from head to feet, she asks each client, “What color comes to mind?” Their answer becomes a gateway. “Colors are frequencies,” she says. “They tell me what’s going on beneath the surface—anger, grief, trauma, emotional stress. The body always speaks.” Each shade reveals a different layer of the person: what they’re holding, and where they need release, Judith’s understanding of this work deepened when she trained with a Reflexologist from South Africa who introduced her to elemental origins—Water, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Wood. These teachings deepened her understanding of the practice and reshaped the way she views every person who walks through her door. She doesn’t see symptoms; she sees stories, patterns, and possibilities for transformation. For Judith, healing is not transactional; it is relational. She enters each session with reverence, prayer, and gratitude, trusting that God’s guidance will show her where to go. She says, “Through this work, I help people heal their past and navigate their future. Touch can do more than people realize, it can shift something inside you.” Her clients return again and again not just because they feel better, but because they also feel seen. And the truth is, anyone can benefit from this form of therapy. Whether someone is wrestling with chronic pain, anxiety, emotional heaviness, digestive issues, or simply feeling disconnected from themselves, reflexology is a therapeutic practice designed for all ages and walks of life. Judith believes wholeheartedly that the body was created to heal, and sometimes it just needs a little help remembering how. In a world that asks us to hurry, to hold everything in, to push through and pretend we’re fine, Sole to Soul offers a quiet, sacred pause. A moment to breathe. A moment to release. A moment to return to yourself. Judith doesn’t just work on feet; she works on souls. And through her hands, countless people have rediscovered the profound truth she lives by every day: healing begins the moment we allow ourselves to submit.

Sole to Soul Massage Therapy Reflexology is more than a relaxing foot massage—it’s a targeted therapeutic practice that supports whole-body wellness. Reflexology can help reduce stress, improve circulation, support lymphatic flow, ease inflammation, and promote deeper relaxation. Many clients report better sleep, reduced anxiety, improved digestion, and relief from chronic tension. Research suggests that while reflexology works differently for everyone, its calming effect on the nervous system may play a key role in restoring balance. Gentle, noninvasive, and suitable for all ages, reflexology offers a natural way to reconnect with the body’s innate ability to heal.
