Investing in Our Community
Investment. By definition, it’s the act of dedicating time, energy, or resources toward something with the hope of a worthwhile return. But in practice, it’s far more personal. The things we invest in; our homes, our health, our relationships, our community - ultimately shape the life we build.
In The Parkland, investment shows up in quiet but powerful ways. Its neighbors supporting small businesses. It’s families choosing to build roots here. It’s the shared pride we feel watching our town grow while still holding onto what makes them special.
We invest in our homes because they protect what matters most. That’s why trusted partners like Nicholson Heating and Air matter. Caring for our heating, cooling, and overall home comfort isn’t just maintenance. It’s protecting one of the biggest investments many of us will ever make.
We invest in ourselves, too. A healthy smile, confidence, and preventative care all pay lifelong dividends. Farmington Family Dental reminds us that prioritizing our health isn’t indulgent. It’s foundational. When we take care of ourselves, we show up better for everyone around us.
And then there’s investing in our future. Preparing for the unexpected, protecting our families, and planning ahead creates peace of mind that’s priceless. Craig Wood at Shelter Insurance helps families safeguard what they’ve worked hard to build, ensuring stability for the next generation.
On a personal note, building this magazine has reminded me that investing in community brings the greatest return. Every story shared, every business highlighted, and every reader who turns these pages contributes to something larger than a publication. It’s about connections. It’s about pride. It’s about strengthening the place we call home.
The return on community investment isn’t always measured in dollars - it’s measured in relationships, trust, and the feeling of belonging. As you read this issue, I hope you feel inspired to invest in your home, your health, your future, and in the community that surrounds you.
Here’s to a month of thoughtful choices and meaningful returns.
Happy April.

INVESTING IN What MATTERS
Nicholson Heating & Air and the Responsibility of Growth
ARTICLE BY KAYLE NEPHEW
PHOTOGRAPHY BY SEAN SULLIVAN
In communities like Farmington, certain businesses become part of the infrastructure. Steady, reliable, and quietly essential.
Nicholson Heating & Air is one of them.
For Dylan Nicholson, that steadiness was personal. He grew up watching his father build the company through long days, late-night calls, and an unwavering commitment to showing up when customers needed him most. So when Dylan stepped into leadership in 2015, it wasn’t about changing the company’s direction. It was about strengthening what already worked, honoring decades of trust, and carrying it forward with intention.
That purpose quickly became practical. When Lincoln Intermediate prepared to update its HVAC system, Dylan leaned in - studying the trade, seeking mentorship, and partnering with Lee Mechanical to execute the bid. What began as an opportunity evolved into deeper involvement with school district upgrades and other large-scale installations across the region.
It was growth. Earned, not inherited.
Then came 2020. As supply chains stalled and material costs surged, Nicholson found itself in the middle of major commercial contracts, including work at the Jefferson VA Hospital. Pricing was fixed. Contracts didn’t adjust for inflation. The company completed the work anyway, absorbing costs that lingered long after the projects ended.
“We stood by our contracts,” Dylan says. “Even when it hurt.” The experience clarified the company’s focus. Over the past two years, Nicholson has returned its primary attention to homeowners and small businesses, the foundation on which the company was built.
Comfort systems are relied upon daily, often without much thought - until they stop working. Regular service visits identify issues before they escalate into emergencies during extreme heat or freezing temperatures. They extend system life, reduce long-term costs, and protect property value.
For families considering replacement, Nicholson offers high-efficiency systems designed to improve both performance and savings. Premium systems can deliver significant reductions in energy use, in some cases up to 50 percent, while offering consistent temperature control and improved dehumidification.
“If you set it at 72 degrees, it stays there,” Dylan explains. “And better humidity control changes everything in the summer.”
Technology has reshaped the experience as well. Connected systems with onboard diagnostics allow technicians to identify issues quickly, while WiFi integration enables smart-home compatibility and automation.
Nicholson’s service model reflects that modernization. Homeowners can schedule online, receive real-time confirmations, and track their technician en route. Once onsite, repair and replacement options are presented clearly and thoughtfully.
“We don’t try to sell to customers,” Dylan says. “We’re a lifeline, a service meant to support you.”
That philosophy is reinforced by flexible financing options and a lifetime replacement warranty on qualifying premium systems, a rarity in the industry.
Inside the company, that same long-term mindset shapes the culture. Nicholson employs between 12 and 20 team members depending on seasonality, with multiple install crews and service technicians often available the same day. Employees receive ongoing training and hands-on development to ensure quality and consistency.
In April 2025, Nicholson transitioned from its longtime downtown Farmington location into a new 15,000-square-foot facility in Park Hills, supporting continued growth while reinforcing long-term stability.
In an industry increasingly shaped by private equity acquisitions, Nicholson remains locally owned by choice. Dylan serves on the board of the Farmington Regional Chamber of Commerce and remains active in community initiatives and school partnerships.
“We don’t want to be a company that just consumes,” he says. “We want to contribute.”
Looking ahead, Nicholson plans to expand regionally through thoughtful growth and acquisitions that preserve the integrity of other local businesses.
For Dylan, success isn’t measured solely in revenue or square footage. It’s reflected in reliability; the calls answered, the employees supported, and the trust earned one household at a time.
Nicholson Heating & Air isn’t chasing rapid expansion or outside validation. They are building deliberately; investing in systems, in people, and in the community they serve.
“If I could tell my younger self anything,” he says, “it would be to stop worrying about how it’s all going to work. Plant the seed. Water it. And trust that it will bear fruit.”

MEET THE DOCTOR
Dr. Roberts and ENT & Allergy of Southeast Missouri

ENT & ALLERGY OF SOUTHEAST MISSOURI
Specialty care should not require leaving the community you call home.
At ENT & Allergy of Southeast Missouri, Dr. Justin Roberts has built a practice grounded in that belief — delivering advanced ear, nose, throat, and allergy care with both clinical expertise and personal commitment.
A board-certified otolaryngologist, Dr. Roberts founded his Farmington practice in 2008 to ensure families across Southeast Missouri could access comprehensive ENT services close to home. Nearly two decades later, the practice offers a full spectrum of care, from sinus surgery and septoplasty to hearing restoration, pediatric ENT services, and the region’s only comprehensive allergy testing and treatment program for seasonal and environmental allergies.
With a primary office in Farmington and satellite clinics in Ironton and Ste. Genevieve, accessibility remains central to the mission - expanding specialty care across rural communities while reducing the burden of travel for patients.
There is a certain gravity to practicing medicine in the place that formed you; a responsibility Dr. Roberts carries with measured intention, investing not only in clinical excellence, but in the long-term health and strength of the community itself.
In a field where skills and expertise are essential, ENT & Allergy of Southeast Missouri offers both. Advanced care delivered with integrity, compassion, and a lasting commitment to the communities they serve.
“We hope that ENT & Allergy of Southeast Missouri is remembered for its compassionate care, and for treating patients like family.”

HOW CRAIG WOOD INVESTS IN HIS COUNTRY, HIS COMMUNITY, AND HIS CLIENTS
ARTICLE BY KAYLE NEPHEW
PHOTOGRAPHY BY SEAN SULLIVAN
On the courthouse square in downtown Fredericktown, just steps from the rhythm of everyday life, sits an office that represents something deeper than insurance policies and premium payments. An office that represents commitment, protection, and an investment in the place you call home: Craig Wood, Shelter Insurance.
When you meet Craig, he hopes you see something simple yet increasingly rare; a principled man. A man guided first by faith, family, and loyalty to his community. Not someone who bends to trends, rather someone who is competent in what he knows, but humble about what he doesn’t. “I’d rather be a learner than a teacher,” he shared, a statement that felt less like branding, and more like conviction.
Long before he became the owner of a Madison County based Shelter agency, Craig’s life was shaped by service. He grew up in St. Louis, the son of a city firefighter. As a young man he had worn many hats; he worked as a 911 dispatcher, became a police officer, and eventually joined the U.S. Army. After which, he began working on the railroad in pursuit of stability and income for his family and children. Although these hats may seem vastly different, the common thread through every chapter was protection. Wearing a badge. Wearing a uniform. Serving his country. Showing up when it mattered.
But not every calling arrives in clarity. Sometimes, it comes in collapse.
After a season of personal upheaval, Craig found himself at rock bottom, uncertain about his direction and deeply aware of one responsibility above all others: providing for his children. The titles he once carried offered little reassurance. What mattered now was rebuilding. He needed stability and something sustainable.
That necessity led him into selling life insurance.
At first, it was practical. A way to stand back up. But what began as a means of survival became something more. Life insurance, he realized, wasn’t about death. It was about what happens to the people you love when you’re no longer there to carry the weight.
For a man who had felt the fragility of stability firsthand, the product stopped feeling transactional and started feeling personal.
He saw families who thought they were protected, but weren’t. Breadwinners without sufficient coverage. Homemakers with no policies at all. Business owners whom were exposed to unnecessary risk.
When Shelter Insurance reached out with the opportunity to open an agency in Fredericktown,
“Craig protects families and businesses with unwavering commitment and personalized service to our community. Whether you’re a client or not, he’s working hard for you and the citizens of Madison County.”
- Eric Hovis, Fredericktown Chief of Police
it almost felt too good to be true. He wasn’t from Madison County, and building trust would take time. Yet instead of easing in, Craig invested fully, joining the Madison County Chamber of Commerce, pouring energy into local events, and immersing himself in the community’s best interests.
For established families and business owners who have worked decades to build homes, land holdings, and companies, Craig’s philosophy is direct: coverage is built for worst-case scenarios, not best-case budgets. In a culture trained to price-shop policies like commodities, he pushes back against the misconception that insurance is interchangeable. Contracts may look similar on paper, however during a claim, the differences matter. The real value lies in the agent’s interpretation, guidance, and strategy.
Craig speaks passionately about life insurance, particularly for homemakers. If a breadwinner passes away, the financial loss is obvious. Yet the economic impact of losing the parent who manages the household can be just as destabilizing. Life insurance avoids probate, creates immediate liquidity, and provides peace of mind when clarity is hardest to find.
Yet perhaps Craig’s greatest investment is not found in policies at all.
In 2008, he co-founded Battle in Distress, a volunteer-based organization that supports veterans transitioning from active duty to civilian life. The mission is simple but urgent: remove barriers. Cut through red tape. Address small problems before they spiral into crisis.
Craig recalls a time several years ago when the VA contacted him about a veteran they had recently housed after living on the streets with two children. Hearing the story and sensing that something wasn’t right, Craig made a house-call under the pretense of reviewing renters insurance. After receiving an invitation inside, Craig’s worries were confirmed when he found no furniture, no beds for the children, and very little food. Without saying a word about his intentions and within days, Craig and members of the community furnished the veteran’s home, provided food and Christmas gifts for the children, and helped the veteran secure employment. A local business owner gave him a job, knowing he had no means of transportation. His solution? He personally drove the veteran to work each day until he could afford to buy a vehicle of his own.
This is what community means to Craig. This is how he shows up for those in need.
Investment is not only financial. It’s choosing to protect what you have built. Choosing to serve when no one is watching. And choosing to stay and strengthen the place you call home.
In the heart of Madison County, Craig Wood may sell insurance, but what he is truly selling is security; for families, for veterans, and for a community that, in more ways than one, was always meant to be his.

A SMILE THAT GIVES BACK
How Farmington Family Dental helps patients invest in their smiles, and in their communities
ARTICLE BY KAYLE NEPHEW PHOTOGRAPHY BY SEAN SULLIVAN
Investment looks different for everyone. For some, it’s financial security. For others, it’s personal growth or building something that lasts. But for Dr. Steven and Dr. Abby Perry of Farmington Family Dental, investment begins with health and the understanding that a healthy smile can influence every aspect of a life.
“We want people to feel comfortable and fully understand their options. There’s no judgment, we’re here to help whether it’s functional, medical, or cosmetic.” - Abby Perry
Dr. Steven Perry knew early on that dentistry was his calling. As an Eagle Scout, he began shadowing a dentist at just 11 years old. After graduating from dental school in Cleveland, Ohio, he entered a system largely driven by insurance limitations. It didn’t take long to realize he wanted something different.
“I couldn’t always get people healthy the way I felt they deserved,” he explains. “There were restrictions that made it difficult to provide comprehensive care. I wanted the freedom to treat patients thoughtfully and completely.”
In 2020, he opened his own practice in Farmington. What began with a team of just over a dozen has since grown to 35 employees, expanding services and administrative support to better care for patients at every stage of life.
Located on East Karsch Boulevard, their practice has become a trusted space for families across the Parkland region, not simply because of the services they provide, but because of the standard of care they deliver. There’s an ease to the environment. A warmth. A sense that patients are seen and heard rather than rushed.
For the Perrys, dentistry is not simply about procedures. It’s about restoring confidence, improving comfort, and helping people regain parts of their lives they may have been quietly avoiding.
Farmington Family Dental offers full-service dentistry, from preventive care to advanced restorative and cosmetic procedures. Every comprehensive exam includes digital imaging and oral cancer screenings, performed at each routine visit.
“Oral cancer screenings are something we take very seriously,” Dr. Steven says. “Early detection matters. It’s a simple step that can make an enormous difference.”
Preventative care protects against cavities, gum disease, and inflammation while supporting overall wellness. maintaining dental care is truly an investment in longevity.
It’s easy to postpone a cleaning when life gets busy. However, research continues to link oral health to broader systemic health, reinforcing the idea that preventative dental care remains one of the wisest long-term investments a person can make. Comprehensive exams, professional cleanings, digital imaging, and oral cancer screenings allow their team to identify concerns early often before discomfort appears.
“Prevention is always less invasive than treatment,” Dr. Steven explains. “When we catch something early, we preserve more of the natural tooth and protect long-term health.”
When restorative care is needed, Farmington Family Dental offers a full range of solutions designed to restore both function and aesthetics. From medical to cosmetic, their practice offers comprehensive care that you can trust.
“Our goal is always to save what we can and restore what we must,” Dr. Steven says. “We want treatment to feel like an investment in the future, not just a quick fix. When someone feels confident in their smile, it changes how they interact with the world,” Dr. Perry says.
Access to care remains a priority. The practice offers in-house membership plans that include two cleanings and X-rays annually, along with third-party financing options designed to make ongoing care manageable and approachable.
Beyond the walls of the office, their commitment to investment extends into the Parkland community. Each May and November, they host “Hero Smiles,” providing complimentary dental care to veterans. In 2025 alone, they donated $111,000 in services to veterans in the region.
They remain deeply involved in local organizations such as CASA, the Farmington Regional Chamber of Commerce, and Toys for Tots, in addition to supporting educational outreach programs and monthly charitable initiatives. For the Perrys, a thriving practice and a thriving town go hand in hand.
“Our goal is always to save what we can and restore what we must,” Dr. Steven says. “We want treatment to feel like an investment in the future, not just a quick fix. When someone feels confident in their smile, it changes how they interact with the world,” Dr. Perry says.
“My kids are growing up here,” Dr. Steven Perry says. “If we want a strong community, we have to invest in it.”
And when you invest in your dental health and choose maintenance, education, and confidence, you’re not just investing in
your smile. You’re investing in your wellbeing, your longevity, and your ability to show up fully in your life.
At Farmington Family Dental, that investment is personal, and its impact reaches far beyond the chair.
FOUR SIMPLE WAYS TO INVEST IN YOUR MORNING AND START YOUR DAY OFF ON THE RIGHT FOOT
habits for morning success
One of the best ways to invest in yourself is by creating a consistent and intentional morning routine. No matter how unpredictable or chaotic the rest of your day may become, starting your morning with self-care and purpose sets a positive tone that stays with you throughout the day. Once you develop a morning routine that truly resonates with you, you’ll look forward to it every night, knowing it will set the foundation for a productive and fulfilling day.
If you’re ready to elevate your mornings, here are some meaningful ways to invest in your routine and start each day on the right foot.
Be Your Own Barista:
One of life’s simplest pleasures is savoring a homemade coffee each morning. While skipping the drive-thru may be tough at first, brewing your own allows you to appreciate the process—and chances are, you’ll end up preferring your own perfect cup of joe.
Get Your Steps In:
An hour-long gym session before work may not be realistic, but a quick morning walk is. Use this time to clear your mind, enjoy nature, and listen to your favorite podcast or artist—an easy way to start your day feeling relaxed.
Enjoy Some Breakfast:
Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, yet often the most overlooked. Setting your alarm just minutes earlier to prepare a fresh, nutritious meal can transform your morning, fueling your body and mind for a more energized and productive day.
Read A Book:
Starting your day with a book is far more calming than scrolling through social media. Reading in the morning helps ease you into the day, providing a peaceful and mindful escape that sets a positive, focused tone for what’s ahead.
Build Wealth Through Real Estate
Real Estate remains one of the most powerful ways to build longterm wealth. Investing isn’t just for large corps or seasoned investors - it’s for anyone ready to build something bigger for their future. With the right strategy and local expertise, investment properties can generate income and long-term value.
