My dear friend, Happy New Year! I don’t know about you, but instead of a New Year’s Eve party, I like to go to bed early and begin my new year with an extravagant brunch and a dazzling, motivating morning. No matter how you like to start your year, I hope it starts with shaking off the year prior and embracing the new year ahead. I was truly inspired by the conversations that fill these pages. Treehive Chiropractic encourages us to take the beginning of the year slowly. I absolutely love this idea. Rather than jump into New Year’s resolutions, we can take a month to reset and rest after the holidays. I personally enjoy a good fast and mental reset. This helps me reprioritize for the year and realize what truly matters most. With each new year comes the invitation for new beginnings. I hope that 2025 inspires you to continue living a life that you absolutely love. And if you’re feeling the nudge to make changes, then I hope this issue gives you new strength and courage to do what you need to do. I absolutely love what Hannah Grieser says in her article: “Like the ebb and flow of the seasons, change can be rhythmic.” I hope that you find a kind of flow for this year. And through the eyes of Blush Boot Camp, Jazzercise, Treehive Chiropractic and Aislyn Dermatology, I hope you discover the things that matter most to you! We are celebrating the beauty of new beginnings in this new year! May you be inspired, strengthened and empowered within these pages this January. Setting Goals in the New Year Based Out of a Place of Rest

STARTING WELL WITH TREEHIVE

14

“How do you position yourself to make your goals from a place of rest instead of a place of desperation?” Kristine Stork, office manager at Treehive Chiropractic, a community health center in south Denver, asks to highlight one tension of the new year. Amid the fresh beginnings and old worries that surround the turn of the calendar, Treehive takes a novel approach. Kristine says, “We get really counter-cultural in January, and we do essentially a rest and reset month.” Instead of revving our engines and blowing through the red lights, Treehive wonders what it might look like to start slow instead. Perhaps spending the first two weeks in January simply focusing on getting really good sleep might change the way we picture the year ahead. As Dr. Tim puts it, “Hey, take your time when setting your goals, and do it from a place of being well-resourced. Everyone’s going into the new year, and they’re setting their goals based on what they’re afraid of, what they lack—and nobody makes good decisions from a place of fear.”

In the past, they’ve taken this intention and translated it into the physical space of their office through low music and dancing candle flames. What a warm image against the cold contrast of winter nights. From this safe space, they start to get curious. When looking at goals, Dr. Tim asks, “Do you know the big why behind it, and do you know how much, by when?” He sees having a larger motivation and giving details to goals as key to their success. For many people, the new year is an opportunity to be more intentional about getting active. Kristine encourages, “Activity doesn’t have to look like anything crazy.” As the mom of two littles, she emphasizes that even a quick walk or getting outside can be a success. Dr. Tim concurs with this view: “The best activity, the best workout, the best exercise, is the one you’re actually going to do.” Imagine a well-meaning person committing to an intense exercise regime, only to become

discouraged a few weeks in because it’s not a good fit. “I’d rather that person walk ten minutes every day and never give it up,” Dr. Tim says. “Start with something that’s reasonable and achievable, and then build and stack on that as you build that into a habit.” Or in the words of Kristine’s mentor, “Just do more than nothing!” Being a health center, Treehive fills a much-needed space in the community as an information resource. “We have so many intentional connections to other providers in the area, that we have a very, very deep referral network, so if someone comes to us, we’re able to act as the person that takes them off the merry-go-round of providers, and we can send them right to where they need to go.” Treehive embodies a new medical approach, one far from the typical vision of sterile lab coats and clinical tones. “We really stand to rebel against the normal medical model or the CONTINUED >

way we’ve always been taught health should look like: health in a bottle, essentially. We do that by being people serving people.” One of the focuses that sets Treehive apart is their attention to family care, especially their heart for mothers as pivotal figures deserving support. “Society says mom comes last, and we say mom comes first,” Dr. Tim shares. “If moms take care of themselves first and foremost, everyone else benefits most from that.” For anyone curious to learn more, Treehive has one encouragement about consultations. “We never charge people to give them information. We believe information is power, and we want people to feel empowered. If we can’t be the ones to help, we’ll point them to those who can.”

beautiful sunrise. Oh my, was I surprised! The sunrise that appeared was more than amazing. It was magnificent! I wanted to capture

everything that I felt at that moment. The intensity of the colors and the dramatic contrast were all nestled in the perfect conditions of

I was perusing a card selection at a local retail store when my eyes fell on this one; ”New Year’s Resolutions: Casual promises I make to myself that I am under no legal obligation to fulfill.” I laughed out loud. It rang true for me. My number one resolution for years has been, ”Work Out More and Lose Weight,” followed by a sub list of action steps;

“We say, ‘You can lift that weight, we believe in you! You can do it! We are here to support you.’ That mentality carries over into our everyday lives as women.” no sugar, no carbs, workout six days a week and so on. By March, my lofty goals have slid off the page into the paper shredder. This year is going to be different. I’m enlisting in boot camp. Blush Boot Camp! Why Blush? Because this gym is about accountability and personalized programming. Plus, it’s a supportive group of women of all ages working out together! Owner, Meghan Case, opened her Parker gym in October 2024 with a vision. “We aren’t just a gym or another club who wants to take your money. My goal is to create a community OF women FOR women. I want to change the narrative of how women treat each other. At Blush, we create a space for women to feel strong, powerful and confident in themselves. We work together. We say, ‘You can lift that weight, we believe in you! You can do it! We are here to support you.’ That mentality carries over into our everyday lives as women.”

Each membership package includes a personalized workout plan, nutritional guidance, ‘mindset training’, a daily list of classes, fun events and free childcare. I toured the facility, which is beautiful and feminine with soft grays and pinks. The main workout room is expansive with high ceilings and an industrial vibe. Free weights, cardio machines, balance balls, a heart monitoring screen and a variety of fitness items are lined up neatly along the walls. ”Empowering Women Through Fitness” is scrawled across a wall along with other motivational quotes sprinkled throughout the gym. Meghan believes that fitness is much more than just weight loss. “Fitness is good for mobility and flexibility. I have been in occupational therapy for over twenty years. I can modify any exercise plan and that sets us apart from other programs and is an amazing foundation for working with women of all ages.” CONTINUED > JANUARY 2 0 2 5 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . “Fitness is good for mobility and flexibility. I have been in occupational therapy for over twenty years. I can modify any exercise plan and that sets us apart from other programs and is an amazing foundation for working with women of all ages.”

Self-care tops her list of key elements to a person’s overall well-being. Good nutrition, sleep, exercise, a positive mindset and the people we surround ourselves with contribute to self-care. “Exercise and pushing yourself helps you sleep better which leads to a healthier and longer life. As far as nutrition goes, teaching women balance and to not be afraid to eat is important. I’ve worked with women who are over ninety years of

20

age who are still trying to lose weight. That makes me sad about the mentality of our culture. Fueling our body with good things is what matters.” “Women are their own worst critics. I want us to be different for each other, to each other and to ourselves. If we can change one life and put one person on a path that’s bettering themself, we have done our job!” To find out more about what Blush has to offer, visit BlushBootCamp.com.

JUST GET yourself through the DOOR The music is pumping. Happy chatter fills the room as women rotate through their stations according to the wall-mounted screens. There’s an occasional grunt of exasperation, whoop of success and hearty clang of weight machines. Stepping into Peaches & Gains immediately fills you with a sense of community. “Our weight training classes focus on women’s health and wellness, teaching women that it’s ok to workout,” says Brooke Broz, owner and coach at Peaches & Gains in Parker. “Each person has their own progress and they work out according to what the televisions say. The coaches go through the books each week to ensure progression. It builds a camaraderie.” Officially opening in February 2024, Peaches & Gains has 200 female members and 150 punchcards. They also train local sports teams and are working to get into elementary and high schools to promote healthy lifestyles. “They (girls) come in and say they want to be skinny,” Brooke states, “and I tell them you want to be strong.” As a professional bodybuilder and trainer, Brooke knows how hard the high school years can be for girls and wants to help them advocate for themselves and create a safe space to do so. With classes starting as early as 5 in the morning and ending at 7 at night, Peaches & Gains rocks all day long. Classes range

from open gym sessions to HIIT, self-defense and co-ed kickboxing. While Peaches & Gains is for women, men can attend kickboxing classes. “We decided if we were going to allow husbands and boyfriends in, we needed to be able to hit them,” Brooke teases. Joking aside, seeing men help advocate for their partners is part of their secret sauce. With plans to expand her space by March 2025, Brooke hopes to have one room specific for kickboxing and HIIT cardio classes with another room for machines and weight training. In addition to her Parker expansion, Brooke is working to build a second Peaches & Gains location in Castle Rock sometime in 2025. She’s excited to bring her dream to a new place to help build confidence for more women. One of Brooke’s favorite things about her female-centered business is learning from older women. “I love when older women teach me something I didn’t realize, and then I’m able to give back to them.” Having ladies training from all walks of life promotes a more profound connection at Peaches & Gains. Brooke’s biggest success stories evolve from her six-week training challenges. Some women have seen as much as a 30-pound weight loss after these intense sessions. For January, Peaches & Gains offers a sixweek challenge, which keeps you locked into that special price into February. Starting a new venture can be overwhelming, but Brooke’s advice for beginners is simple: “Just get yourself through the door, and if you can’t, have someone come with you to get you through the door.”

TAKE ON THE NEW DAY WITH AISLYN DERMATOLOGY ARTICLE BY CASSANDRA GREEN An avid athlete her whole life, Dr. Aislyn Nelson has a passion for dermatology and skin care. Coming from San Diego, one of her focuses is educating about protecting our skin from the sun. Recently opening her brand new practice in Colorado has only enhanced this awareness. “We really like to be involved in community events… we are a part of several chambers. physician where people know us and they say hi, and we know their name and their kids’ names,” Dr. Aislyn shares. Aislyn and her office manager/esthetician, Brooke Wood, take their time with each patient. Rather than rush through appointments, they make sure to answer every single question in depth. Open for same day appointments, they are a direct pay practice with no hidden fees. Their ultimate goal is to be available for patient’s needs when they need it. “Probably by age forty every person should see a dermatologist once a year and

30

that’s just because one in five Americans are going to get a skin cancer by age seventy. So it can happen at any time,” Dr. Aislyn says. Aislyn Dermatology provides cosmetic services as well as treatment for skin cancer, hair loss, sun protection, acne treatments, dry skin, mole evaluations and more. They want to be available to anyone in any season of life. “Time is not static. We’re always changing. We’re always maturing… A lot of times new beginnings can bring on new challenges. I think making sure that you

aren’t scared to address them… taking on the new day and not being scared to talk about it [makes the difference],” Dr. Aislyn says. She talks about how in every season of life, we will face new challenges, our skin is no exception. Brooke also shares her passion for skin care, “As an esthetician, I’ve done it for the last sixteen years.. Just helping people overall have a good skincare routine, getting them that glow that they want… Making people feel good and confident about themselves. That’s what I like.” Having run track and played golf as well as basketball, Dr. Aislyn also has a passion for athletes. She says, “Based on my experience I feel there is a real need for sun education and skincare in the athletic world… the focus is always on your sport… but no one discusses the fact you are being constantly bombarded with… UV radiation… Also sweat, dirt, tight uniforms, chlorine - these all take a huge toll on the skin and cause acne, dryness, etc. Athletes need to be educated on how to manage this. In my perfect world, I would work with the NCAA to educate their athletes and I would absolutely love to be the dermatologist for the NFL, PGA and ATP. Until that happens, we are trying to donate sunscreen to outdoor athletic events and if they allow us - be present for the events to help educate the athletes as well.” For now, as Dr. Aislyn sets her sights on her own new beginnings with Aislyn Dermatology, reach out 719.992.0127 AislynDermatology.com.

don’t stop moving You Gotta Keep Moving So You Can Keep Going! “Once you come through that door, you’re gonna love it!” Kay Terry, franchise owner and instructor for Jazzercise in Parker, is a cheerleader for every single woman who comes through her doors. She found Jazzercise when she was 24 years old and it has been a part of her life ever since. Kay says, “It gets you through ups and downs in your life. You’re having a hard day. You’re having a hard period in your life, come to Jazzercise. Your brain shuts off and you dance and smile!” With 23 classes a week, Jazzercise is a non-judgment zone. “All ages, all fitness levels, all sizes, all walks of life in one class,” Kay emphasizes the range of ages in the program. They see women in their 20s all the way up to their 80s. “Where do you find that?!” she exclaims. Kay’s passion is clear, “I want women to know it’s a program you can stay with. I want people to find that when you come to jazzercise, you can stay. You don’t have to go find another program. It encompasses everything you need as far as a workout goes,” she encourages. Jazzercise is creative, always evolving, uplifting, high energy, fun and a stress free zone! “It’s a community of powerful women. You become great friends with everyone

there. The program itself makes you cry, makes you laugh, the routines are all choreographed to music and the music is inspiring,” Kay relishes. Her words of advice through life’s challenges are, “don’t stop moving.” This emphasis comes from Jazzercise Founder, Judi Sheppard Missett who says, “You gotta keep moving so you can keep going.” That’s the supportive backbone behind Jazzercise. Jazzercise Parker has done the impossible by staying relevant and evolving in the fitness industry over the last 55 years. They offer fun, dynamic classes like HIIT, cardio, sculpt and stretch. Classes consist of dancing, weight training and stretching, all while working out alongside your friends.

Autumn leaves crinkling beneath your feet. Summer breaks, ripe with seaside vacations and sunny reflections. New Year’s fireworks and confetti, celebrating resolutions and fresh starts. The seasons invite change. At the start of 2025, perhaps you feel an invitation to do something new. Big or small, every call to change is an invitation to the life you desire– the version of you crying out from within. This version is often hidden beneath layers of busyness and people’s perceptions of how you are or should be. How you respond to that call determines if you move closer to becoming who you really are. This time last year, my husband and I were living in Colorado with comfortable paychecks, fulfilling work, and an incredible community of friends. Yet, we could not ignore the internal voice saying, “There is more for you.” We wondered if we were chronically discontent and ungrateful. Yet, the voice persisted, and we continued to dream of a life we had yet to experience. One where our days had the space to flow from our priorities of faith, marriage and family; where we could dream, create and give without boundaries. Everything changed when our son was born in June. As the adage goes, having a baby changes everything. As it is with most cliches, this truth was white noise until we walked through it. Within four months, my husband and I had become parents, quit our jobs, moved across the country and rented out our beloved townhome to live with my parents. Though we dreamt of moving to Georgia and starting businesses, we hadn’t expected it so soon. Parenthood demanded we live from our priorities—not just talk about them. Two months into this new chapter, and we are beginning to establish a routine and rhythm after the rattling. As entrepreneurs, we have newfound space to live from our priorities. Now the question is, how?

CONSISTENCY AND CHANGE

Change: make (someone or something) different; alter or modify. Consistency: acting or done in the same way over time, especially so as to be fair or accurate. These words seem contradictory but are complementary. Consistency without change means stagnation, while change without consistency leads to chaos. Many fail to achieve goals because they lack the discipline for consistency. Others cling to rigid routines, leaving no room for change and collapsing under pressure. For example, a budget that’s too strict and doesn’t allow room for “treat CONTINUED >

yourself” moments is likely to be abandoned. A diet that is too rigid will likely collapse in moments of binging. Our challenge is to balance the two. One of my main goals is to be present with my family, able to be interrupted and flow with each day’s unique needs. However, I also want to consistently cultivate a business and habits that allow my household to thrive. Motherhood has taught me to relinquish control, so I ask: how do I embrace change while staying disciplined and consistent?

THE WHY OVER THE WHAT

I believe the answer lies in focusing on the why over the what—our rhythms rather than rigid goals. Priorities guide productivity, not the reverse. Rather than consistency looking like a checklist of to-dos, what if it looked like consistently putting the first things first? We must hold our consistency loosely, welcoming change throughout our days rather than one-time, dramatic moments. What we do matters less than who we are becoming, yet the two cannot be divorced from one another. Like the ebb and flow of the seasons, change can be rhythmic. Something that’s rattling and dizzying can be embedded in tradition. So, after you unearth the soil beneath your feet, what will you plant? What will you water? What will you have the faith to see bud, sprout and flourish? If you answer those questions, this time next year you will be reveling in the growth.

Nutrient-Rich Dessert To The Rescue ARTICLE BY MEL BOBAN

SWEETS The beginning of the year is packed with inspiration and motivation to get back on track after a sweet-filled holiday season. It can feel extreme, and it also can be depleting to cut oneself off from everything indulgent after weeks of eating favorite sweet and savory recipes. For sugar lovers who believe going cold-turkey feels intimidating or overwhelming, nutrition-packed desserts are a great way to stick to healthy food goals without the guilt.

This recipe is a classic favorite. If you cut the bars into 16 pieces, they are around 270 calories each. They are very filling, packed with healthy goodies and taste oh so delicious. If you can’t finish them yourself (it makes a lot!), bring samples along to your next workout class to share the love. Your accountability group will be asking you for the recipe! These come in handy for a quick breakfast on-the-go or an afternoon snack. You’ll want to taste these out of the oven once they cool a bit... simply scrumptious. Combine: • 1 cup wheat flour • 2 cups cooked quinoa, cooled • 2 cups oats • 2/3 cup of your choice of chopped nuts

1 teaspoon cinnamon 1 teaspoon baking soda 2 tablespoons chia seeds 2/3 cup raisins Optional: chocolate chips as desired Optional: add additional seeds or nuts on hand such as pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, etc.

Notes: Boil quinoa at a 2:1 water to rice ratio. For estimating, 1/3 cup of uncooked quinoa yields 1 cup cooked quinoa. Add this mixture slowly to combine: • 2 eggs • 2/3 cup peanut butter, almond butter or sunflower butter • 1/2 cup honey • 1 banana • 1 teaspoon vanilla Bake at 375 degrees for 20 minutes, or until when the edges get golden brown. Bake in a 9x13-inch glass dish. After they cool, slice and enjoy. Keep them covered to maintain freshness.
