A LOVE OF NUMBERS

Heart and Passion
February reveals a true essence within winter to me. It’s the cozy chill that lures me inside, but it’s also that chill that fills my lungs with winter’s awakening breath. From Valentine’s Day to Black History Month and the Lunar New Year, there are many ways for us to appreciate life, love and the people around us and in our community.

I especially value this time of year as we celebrate our Love Local issue. This month is dedicated to highlighting the best of what’s to love in our local community. I want to encourage you to slow down and truly notice what makes Parker feel like a small town. Even as we grow and have so much to offer, somehow we hold true to that small-town charm that is so precious to behold. Liz Matney describes her home in Parker as “a Colorado home tucked into the stillness of alpine beauty.”
As this issue came together, I couldn’t help but notice a certain energy and passion bubbling up from within the people we interviewed. From Terry Lambert and his love for numbers to Kendle Frank encouraging future volunteer puppy raisers to join the cause at Freedom Service Dogs, our articles are stories of love and passion. Stephanie Carroll at Redstone Bank says it beautifully, “We put our hearts into what we do.”
At the heart of this month's issue is a foundation that our town leaders have paved the way for. Diane Kulback talks about how The Parker Chamber of Commerce, The Women’s Forum, The Parker Historical Society and more have partnered with them to dive deeper into the history of their homestead to cherish Pollywog Station Lavender Farm as a landmark. These are intentional steps and moments surrounded in a united stance of honor and value for our town and the people in it.
Thank you for your part in bringing such unity and love to our community. At the heart of everything we do is the belief that together, we’re stronger. Every month, the stories shared within these pages prove that again and again.
Here’s to a February filled with intentional steps of love and passion.
Always,

A COMMUNITY CENTERPIECE

TAKE A MOMENT FOR PEACE AND COMFORT AT POLLYWOG STATION LAVENDER FARM
Pollywog Station Lavender Farm is 17 acres of natural beauty. Rich in historical context, the owners, Brian and Diane Kulback, along with their son Ryan Kulback, found inspiration in the original homestead. Their historical endeavor has kept Pollywog Station Lavender Farm alive and thriving to this day.
Diane talks about William H. Reynolds as the original homesteader and rancher. She shares, “He ranched cattle and grew potatoes, so we’re gonna have a potato field that we’re gonna grow, and people can help harvest the potatoes. Then there’s a root cellar that’s part of the old homestead. We would love to store the potatoes in the root cellar like they did.”

Brian and Diane’s passion for learning about the original homestead has opened the door for countless experts, archivists and historians to walk the land and share their insights and knowledge. They take in every detail with fervor and application.
Originally named after the train depot in Parker, Diane explains, “Pollywog Station’s name came from the train that would wiggle up Hilltop Road, heading towards Colorado Springs and Pueblo. Because it wiggled, the people who rode the train nicknamed it Polly. So, that’s how it got its name.”
Acquiring the land over 30 years ago, Brian and Diane intentionally stewarded the property in a way that held true to its history.
“We always wanted to open up the property to the community! Because we have the old homestead, people would stop in before we even started.” She continues, “We spent lots of time investigating and seeing how we could open it up. I went and visited 40 lavender farms in Colorado and Michigan. We wanted to see how they operated, and there are so many different types! We wanted ours more Zen, with a blend of history and pioneer life.”
When you visit, you get an array of experiences and activities. Diane describes, “It’s a wildlife corridor, it’s a homestead, it’s a lavender farm. We raise bees and chickens for fun!”

“IT’SAWILDLIFECORRIDOR

Open seasonally from June through September, Pollywog Station Lavender Farm hosts a series of events, tours and classes. You can also partake in The Homesteader’s Riddle, created by Ryan, and visit their gift shop.
He endeavors, “[With] 17 acres there’s a lot to see. We have all the different lavender fields and the old house. [We want to] encourage people to walk around. That’s why we created a selfguided riddle. We also encourage guests to pick their own bundles of lavender. There are a bunch of different kinds of lavender. We grow two primary kinds. English lavender is for cooking, and then we have the more oil-based one that people associate with essential oils. We sell both.”
They also have bees on the property. Diane exclaims, “We’re all about the bees! They’re our partners in this. They’re really the MVPs of the farm because they really make it so that our lavender and native plants thrive. They make a huge difference.”
Centered around preservation and education, they partner with The Parker Chamber of Commerce, The Women’s Forum, The Parker Historical Society and more to continue to learn and grow in all the opportunities Pollywog Station Lavender Farm has to offer.
You can visit their website www.pollywogstationlavenderfarm.com and follow them on social @pollywogstationlavender

A Love of Numbers

SOLVING PUZZLES, ONES WITH NUMBERS THAT HELP CLIENTS SAVE MONEY AND REACH THEIR FINANCIAL GOALS
ARTICLE BY CASSIDY RITTER | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
Terry Lambert fell in love with numbers in high school when he took his first accounting class.
“I think what I really liked about it is [the numbers] all kind of balance,” Terry says. “Everything works at the end of the day, and if sometimes it doesn’t work, it’s kind of a puzzle; there’s a right answer, and you’re just trying to fit the puzzle pieces where they need to go.”
Years later, during an internship during his undergraduate studies at Colorado State University, Terry saw firsthand the impact taxes have on businesses and people.
“The tax part was always real dollars,” he says. “It has a very tangible impact on people’s lives or their businesses.”
For more than a decade, Terry worked as a CPA at accounting firm KPMG, Charles Schwab and, like his mom, the IRS. While working at these companies, he saw the bad advice people received when they filed their taxes or set up their businesses. “I realized that there was an opportunity to go out there and help the community be compliant and also make sure they get all the tax advantages and benefits that they deserve and that they’re entitled to,” he shares.

“With my firm, I envision being more of a partner to people.”
— Terry Lambert, founder of Tailored Tax and Wealth
In April, he decided it was time to provide people and businesses with a more comprehensive and tailored tax and financial strategy. So, he launched his own finance and accounting firm, Tailored Tax and Wealth.
His goal at Tailored Tax and Wealth is to provide clients with personalized financial guidance that he wishes more people had access to.
“With my firm, I envision being more of a partner to people,” Terry says. “I don’t want to just be their tax preparer. I want to be more — somebody that they can call if they have questions or [if] concerns come up, and set their life up so that they’re maximizing their financial outcome or their outlook.”
At Tailored Tax and Wealth, Terry works with individuals, families and businesses to minimize the amount of taxes they pay and help them meet their financial goals.
To do this, Terry’s firm offers flat-fee pricing rather than charging clients a percentage of the assets under management, as traditional finance firms do. With Terry’s flat-fee pricing, clients know exactly what they’re going to pay, which can help them budget.
Tailored Tax and Wealth has an office in downtown Parker, a community Terry and his wife, Karis, call home. More information about the firm can be found at www.tailoredtaxandwealth.com

The Story Behind the Painting:
“My wife and I were out together one day and came upon these two birds, slightly hidden within their surroundings, but not“front and center”once I noticed them. What intrigued me most was how each bird seemed to have its own personality and could stand alone, yet together they seemed to complement each other. They seemed like friends who worked and lived together within their respective environments. I purposefully tried to be true to those sensations and feelings as I painted these

HOME IN EXILE

WHERE SHE UNCOVERED THE FREEDOM TO WRITE HER OWN STORY

Liz Matney reminisces about when she first went back to India in 2022. “We went back to India to connect with our roots –those roots in our family that have blessed and sustained us, and to be part of that. I wanted my kids to see glimpses of the India I remembered.”
Her kids were born in India and spent their first 4-5 years growing up close to family before they moved to what Liz describes in her book as “a Colorado home tucked into the stillness of alpine beauty [Parker, Colorado].” After the pandemic, Liz wanted to find their home and roots once more, but what they experienced was a changing landscape and isolating exile. She writes of this experience in her first memoir, Home in Exile.
“The India I grew up in is very different from now. I remember an India where my grandfather was a pastor. He could sit under the tamarind trees in his garden with a cup of chai in his hand and have a warm conversation with another gentleman with a cup of chai in his hand, who’s talking about his Sanskrit Hindu scriptures with a Tilak on his forehead. And this pastor

and Brahman priest could still call each other Bhai, which is the Hindi word for brotherhood.”
In her novel, she explains that things are changing, “There are things we need to process and be honest about. That’s what this book feels like, like a step in the right direction.”
Through poetic prose and depth, Liz writes about the beauty of her roots in India and its identity crisis that is shaping a new and dangerous landscape. She shares about her own experience of having to go into hiding and her family being marginalized and treated like criminals for their faith.
Even with such a heavy message, though, Liz is warm and kind. As we sit across from each other at Fika, she shares, “Parker has become more home now [since I’ve returned]. The whole Parker community has done such an amazing job of helping our family develop deeper roots.”
Her memoir is the beginning of awareness and renewal, of finding home, healing and fighting for what is sacred.

Built on Community Family Banking
REDSTONE BANK, A FAMILY-OWNED BUSINESS, TAKES PRIDE IN RELATIONSHIP-FOCUSED BANKING WITH AN EMPHASIS ON THE LOCAL COMMUNITY
ARTICLE BY KRISTEN GONZALES PHOTOGRAPHY BY ABBY WATKINS
Walking into Redstone Bank in Parker feels like walking into someone’s living room. The welcoming atmosphere, complete with comfortable couches, an open floor plan and beautiful high ceilings, tells the story of how banking can be different when a business truly cares about its customers.
“Number one, we are relationship-focused,” explains Redstone employee Stephanie Carroll. “We don’t have a 1-800 number. If you come in, we’re going to get to know you personally, learn your names and help you with anything that you need.”
When things go awry, as they sometimes do in banking, Redstone makes a personal connection with its customers to ensure issues are resolved as quickly and efficiently as possible.

“WE DON’T JUST LOOK AT NUMBERS. WE LOOK AT THE WHOLE SITUATION AND THE PEOPLE.”

“We put our hearts into what we do,” Stephanie emphasizes. “For example, let’s say someone accidentally overdrew their account or there’s something pending that looks a little suspicious. We will pick up the phone and call to ask you about it. If you accidentally overdraft the account and you’re going to come in and make a deposit, then we’ll pay the item, and we’re not going to charge you. We really take care of people.”
Unlike larger financial institutions that invest funds nationwide, Redstone Bank was founded in 2008 with a vision to reinvest in the local community. From sponsoring local schools like Ponderosa High School to supporting Parker Days and Trunk-or-Treat to helping nonprofits like SECOR Cares and Heart2Hand, Redstone Bank stands with the Parker community.
“The money that comes in here, we do not send all over the world. It goes back into the community we live in,” Stephanie says. “If you put your money in here, it’s going to go back into Douglas County.”

Another way Redstone supports the community is by volunteering at Parker Days for a dedicated three-hour window before the festival opens, serving adults and children with special needs. They ride the carnival rides without waiting in line, eat corn dogs and cotton candy and have a blast! It’s a phenomenal way for everyone to experience the wonder of Parker Days, and Redstone Bank loves helping to give back for that event.
In addition, each year, Redstone Bank decorates Christmas trees throughout the bank, with sponsorship from local businesses. Everyone in the community votes for their favorite tree, and a winner is selected at the Redstone Christmas event, featuring Frozen characters, Buddy the Elf and of course, Santa and Mrs. Claus.
A bank built on personal relationships, trust, integrity and community, Redstone Bank provides a unique opportunity to make banking more straightforward, more enjoyable and more charitable.
“We don’t just look at numbers,” Stephanie says proudly. “We look at the whole situation and the people.”

PUPPIES RAISED TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE
LEARN MORE ABOUT BECOMING A VOLUNTEER PUPPY RAISER WITH FREEDOM SERVICE DOGS
ARTICLE BY CASSANDRA GREEN | PHOTOGRAPHY BY AMANDA ENGEL

Freedom Service Dogs (FSD) was founded in Denver in 1987 and has grown into one of the largest service dog organizations in the country. Content Coordinator, Kendle Frank shares, “Our mission statement is we transform lives by custom training assistance dogs for people living with disabilities at no cost. All of our dogs are custom-trained to meet the unique needs of the person they’re strategically paired with.”
Kendle goes on to explain, “We train service dogs, professional therapy dogs, skilled companion dogs and facility dogs for veterans and first responders with PTSD or traumatic brain injuries as well as adults with autism, mobility

challenges and also mental health and crisis support professionals.”
While FSD has many volunteer opportunities, one of their biggest needs is puppy raisers. Kendle introduces me to Maxy, whom she’s currently raising as a puppy. Maxy has her own unique training as the Colorado Avalanche Team Dog.
“None of what we do is possible without puppy raisers. They are a huge part of our program. They are the people who guide our little service dog superstars. We need them in order to offset a lot of the cost. This is the most vital stage of their service
dog journey, but it is not up to the puppy raiser to train them. It’s just their job to enforce the training they already know and then advance their training.”
Kendle explains, “Our puppies start socializing and training on day two of their lives. They spend eight weeks in the nursery with their mom. Our volunteers and staff take care of the mamas and puppies. They do a fantastic job. Our nursery is really cool! Then the puppies typically go to a prison program at about eight weeks old. They go to the Denver Women’s Correctional Facility, the Sterling Men’s
Correctional Facility in Sterling, Colorado and then the Fort Dodge Facility. It’s a men’s correctional facility in Iowa. Typically, in these programs, they spend about six to eight weeks. They’re partnered with an inmate handler ,and they learn all the basics there. So, by the time they come to their puppy raiser, they’re almost fully crate trained, house trained and they have a really good foundation for basic cues like sit, down and come. They learn both hand and verbal cues.”
This is where the puppy raisers come into the picture. FSD matches puppy

raisers with dogs based on personality. Kendle shares, “We look at the skills of the puppy raiser, the strengths and weaknesses of the puppy and then we match them with a raiser we think might be a good fit. The awesome thing about being a puppy raiser is Freedom Service Dogs covers all the costs, so you get all of the benefits of having, seriously, the best dog you’ve ever had, but Freedom Service Dogs covers the supplies, veterinary care, one-on-one training and further support.”
She goes on to share the responsibilities as a puppy raiser. She says, “You do the basic training, the care, the house manners and the socializing, and it’s really fun because they have full service dog access. And then once a month, we do a lesson or an outing with our trainers so that we get the support we need and they can get eyes on the puppy and see how they’re progressing through the service dog program.”
She refers to Maxy, “So we go to restaurants. We go to the zoo. She comes to work with me. Everywhere I go, for the most part, she can go as well.”
Kendle has raised three puppies, Winter, Hazy and now Maxy. The biggest goal as a puppy raiser is to make sure they have a good foundation to move forward into more specialized training. FSD provides pet sitters if you need to go on vacation or a work trip, and they even invite the idea of co-raising a puppy with someone else to share responsibilities. You can raise a puppy for as little as two months or as long as 14 months. The most important requirement is that you love dogs and are able to provide in-home care.
The support FSD provides to veterans, first responders and disabled adults through their service dog program makes a profound difference. If you’re interested in finding out more, you can visit www.freedomservicedogs.org

PERMISSION to be

VALENTINE’S DAY CHEESECAKE
ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY CASSIE SUPPES
Valentine’s Day is all about showing your loved one just how much you care. Rather than opting for the predictable chocolates and flowers, why not showcase your culinary prowess and create a one-of-a-kind cheesecake? Not only will this delectable treat demonstrate your affection, but it will also add a personal and luxurious touch to the holiday celebration. Make this Valentine’s Day truly memorable by going above and beyond with a heartfelt, homemade gift. Cheesecake is the perfect dessert for two because it’s both rich and indulgent, but not too heavy. Plus, it can be easily customized to fit your own personal taste and it’s much easier than you think!

TO MAKE THE PERFECT CHEESECAKE, YOU’LL NEED:
• 1 pound cream cheese, softened
• 1 cup sugar
• 3 eggs
• 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
• 1/2 cup sour cream
• 1/2 cup heavy cream
• 1 prepared graham cracker crust
Start by preheating your oven to 350 degrees. In a large bowl, mix together the cream cheese and sugar until smooth. Beat in the eggs, one at a time, then stir in the vanilla extract. Next, add in the sour cream and heavy cream and mix until everything is well combined. Pour the mixture into the prepared graham cracker crust and bake for 45 minutes to 1 hour, or until the cheesecake is set. Let cool completely before serving. For this recipe, we decided to add berries and honey to the top of our cheesecake. Take the time to make yours special to your relationship. With toppings such as chocolate, jelly, whipped cream, berries, fruit, or whatever your partner’s favorite is, you’re sure to make them smile. Make things colorful by adding food coloring to the mix, it can even be made in their favorite color. You can also change things up by making your own crust with Oreos or cinnamon crackers.
To elevate this recipe to the next level, consider using high-quality ingredients such as grass-fed cream cheese and locally sourced honey. For added luxury, try using a blend of different types of berries, or even substituting the graham cracker crust with a crust made of crushed pistachios or hazelnuts.
In addition to adding a variety of toppings, you can also get creative with the presentation. For example, try using a springform pan to create a heart-shaped cheesecake, or using cookie cutters to create fun shapes out of the cheesecake slices. You can also garnish the cheesecake with edible flowers or a sprinkle of edible gold dust for a truly indulgent experience.
