LIFESTYLE LETTER
February Love Local Issue I don’t know about you, but this time of year I am always torn. I find myself going back and forth in how I can better value those around me. I see all the heart shaped chocolates, cute fluffy pink bears and sweet things to give people. I wonder how I can actually let those around me feel thought of. Valentine's Day can feel commercialized. Do you choose a date out or enjoy a cozy night at home? Do you buy a card or just say a kind word? We’ll each arrive at different answers based on our preferences and personalities, but what we hold in common is an opportunity to make sure those around us know we love them. And regardless of how you choose to celebrate, we hope the pages of this month’s magazine will help you do just that as we celebrate and highlight what’s to love in your local community. Parker is brimming with so many beautiful aspects to love. From local flower shops to unique coffee shops, there's a little something special for everyone to experience. We have charities and causes that bring us together along with plenty to do outdoors with our family and loved ones. While we teeter between the chill of January winter and the excitement of spring, we hope you’ll be inspired to take a moment to come together with the people in your life. The ones in your home and on your street. In your neighborhood and your community. “Love local” means your local businesses, those in your community---but it also means loving what is near. Those under your own roof included. So grab a coffee at the Coffee Cabin and head home for a game night around the fire with the family. Or snag a bottle of wine from Black + Haus Tavern and some flowers at Mainstreet Flower Market and indulge life and the local details to enjoy. We’ve always believed what we can do together is so much more than what we can do apart. And we continue to see that demonstrated through the many stories told in these pages month after month. Thanks for letting us be a part of the life you’re building, whatever that may look like. Our hope is that we inspire you to love it just a bit more than you did before. Happy February! THE Sensory SPOT ARTICLE BY LISA BAKEWELL PHOTOGRAPHY BY ABBY WATKINS
“There are so few options out there for very, very young children, and the IDD [Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities] community, including our kiddos with sensory needs,” shares Kayla McDonald, co-owner of The Sensory Spot in Parker, Colorado. “A lot of play areas around the country have sensory-friendly ‘zones,’ which in my mind always provided an image of separation. At The Sensory Spot, our entire space is catered toward this population. Not only that, but we have created the space in

a way that children of all backgrounds can interact. It breaks my heart to think any children would feel left out, or different because of the way they interact with the world, and we are working hard to build a community where everyone is embraced and loved.” Searching for safe and welcoming sensory-friendly experiences became a personal journey for Kayla and her husband, Kyle, co-owner of The Sensory Spot. Their son Carter's preference for sensory-friendly play sparked this vibrant space’s inception. The result? The Sensory Spot—a carefully curated play space, boasting a full line of sight and a capacity of 25 max at any time. “We take pride in the amount of consults and research we did to ensure an inclusive, sensory-friendly environment,” shares Kayla. “The fact that each child learns and expresses themselves differently and at different paces is important, so we... offer comfort items including blackout tents, noise-canceling headphones, light-filtering glasses, weighted blankets and much more,” which allow for deeper exploration, as well as opportunities to reset and disconnect without having to leave the space. “One of our guests put it wonderfully... saying there are no ‘no’s’ in our space.” Encouraging creativity rather than having guided play is The Sensory Spot’s forte. “This [gives] children a sense of ownership over their play,” explains Kayla.
Searching for safe and welcoming sensory-friendly experiences became a personal journey for Kayla. Resources for creativity include art tables, whiteboard walls, chalkboard walls, felt walls and much, much more. “My favorite activity is our rotating sensory bins,” shares Kayla. “We rotate themes every week and have two activities going at a time. One side of our tables is always entirely open-ended and more tactile focused, while the other side is typically a goal-based exercise.” CONTINUED >

Visits average 90–120 minutes. Average ages are 6 months to 6 years, although Kayla says “kiddos” as old as 15 have a ton of fun. Parents are welcome (and needed) at The Sensory Spot but are strongly encouraged NOT to clean up after their kiddos. “I know the stress of cleaning up after your child, and that is not the reason people come to our space,” Kayla shares. “[To] ensure total comfort of all attendees, we pick up behind kiddos as they play—with pauses to enjoy the games ourselves too...” So whether you’re looking for individual play, art classes, movement classes or workshops, The Sensory Spot will be your new favorite hangout. There’s so much to do. January’s calendar was filled with therapy dog visits, a sensory-friendly concert, sensory-friendly movie nights, tactile painting, a Fyzicalhosted social–emotional workshop, the Silent Book club, clothing/toy swap and yoga (including kids' yoga, big/little yoga, and toddler yoga). Many of these activities are part of a regular series. Rates start at $18. Unlimited visits, monthly plans and multi-visit packages are also available. Visit www.thesensoryspot.us or 18870 E. Plaza Dr., Unit 102, in Parker, Monday through Friday (9 a.m. to 6 p.m.) or Saturday (9 a.m. to 3 p.m.) for more information. ARTICLE BY CASSANDRA GREEN PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY HEATHER'S PANTRY
“I challenge people with, ‘if money was no object and you could be doing anything that you want, what would you do with your life?’” Todd Bright’s words activate a drive to serve others. Todd and his wife, Heather, founded Heather’s Pantry to fill a need Heather saw. It was only when she got cancer, that Todd became more involved. Heather passed away in October of 2022, but Todd emphasizes, “It was the fullness of her heart that we be the hands and feet of Jesus.” He states, “Without her cancer [Heather’s Pantry] doesn’t exist like it does today.” Heather’s Pantry goes beyond a food bank. Not only are people’s physical needs met, their lives are transformed by genuine conversation and ministry. During Thanksgiving, Todd shares about how they addressed unreconciled relationships. “There’s no better time than now to be thankful to God for the people in your life,

especially family,” he says. More than one person thanked him for his message and said they were going to make amends with loved ones. Todd says, “Some stuff matters, but only if it changes lives.” He and his partnership director, Rob Nelson share countless stories. But it all begins with their small moments of answering, “yes.” They aren’t creating any of it on their own, they’re purely seeing the provision and connecting it to the need. It’s so beyond a food bank. Rob travels all over Parker helping veterans, single parents, seniors and more. Todd keeps the heart and mission alive with each food bank to ensure people feel loved, cared for and seen. He summarizes, “It’s not our work, it’s God’s work.” Heather’s Pantry has grown by tenfold. Since they started in a garage 10 years ago, they have surpassed 18 million pounds of distributed food. They’re responsible for more than six food banks in the Denver area. Their takeaway? Don’t underestimate your yes. In reflection, Todd asks if money weren’t an object, what would he do with his life? Confidently, he wouldn’t change a thing. He says, “Same on the last day as on the first.”

reat Outdoors Colorado has a mission to preserve, protect and enhance Colorado’s parks, trails, wildlife, rivers and open spaces. They are funded entirely by the Colorado Lottery and they are responsible for a statewide coordinated effort to help connect youth to the outdoors through Generation Wild. Jackie Miller, the executive director at Great Outdoors shares Generation Wild’s vision to inspire an entire generation to play and make outdoor activities an active part of their daily life. Generation Wild aims to make the outdoors accessible for youth and families by providing tips and tricks to get outside more.
“Time outside helps reduce stress and anxiety. It helps kids with their creativity and imagination, promotes self-reliance and helps with their learning and socialization,” Jackie talks about the importance of unstructured play each day. Being outside makes kids and families healthier and happier. She says, “It’s good for our children to be bored to ignite their creativity and initiate a new kind of play, discovery and curiosity… and it’s accessible. You walk out your front door onto the sidewalk and you look for bugs within the cracks or study a dandelion or watch clouds grow.” In a state as rich in outdoor resources as Colorado, Jackie believes in the benefits of being outdoors. Generation Wild has a list of 100 Things to Do Before You’re 12 on
their website to get families started. Their heart is to tap into the awe of life, and to build a generation that is healthy, adventurous and caring. They also partner with Children’s Hospital Colorado each winter for “Say Hi With a Snowman” to recruit families to build snowmen for kids at the hospital. Kids in the hospital draw their dream snowman and volunteers bring it to life. Jackie lights up as she talks about the beautiful creations. “It’s such a good way for those kids to feel seen,” she expresses. There’s so much that Generation Wild is up to. Visit their website at www.generationwild.com and follow them on Facebook and Instagram @generationwildcolorado.

In a world full of tight schedules and long days, some people choose to make time and space to stop and smell the roses. Meet Amber and Frencesco Micciche, the owners of Mainstreet Flower Market since April 2022. “We are passionately committed to cultivating a legacy of quality, empathetic service, and unique product offerings ensuring every bloom blossoms into a memorable experience,” shares Amber. From daily pick-up and delivery to special events, subscriptions, and home staging consultations, the Micciches are committed to turning each moment into a memorable experience. They source the finest flowers from around the world and procure specialty products from local growers to guarantee freshness and toptier quality of their arrangements. Their selection includes roses, plants, dish gardens, gourmet/fruit gift baskets, and exotic flowers.
Amber and Frencesco manage the dayto-day affairs of the flower shop with help from their three sons—Brayton, Drake, and Jakobe. Adding to the familial charm, their 2-year-old grandson, Azul, spends time with his “Lita” and “Grandpo” at the flower shop exploring the vibrant world of colors, textures, and fragrances.

The family’s path to floral entrepreneurship was paved during their four-year stint in Phoenix, AZ. Frencesco’s deep dive into herbalism and botany, coupled with Amber’s immersion in the artistic community, kindled a profound passion for plants and the arts. Their journey into floral ownership wasn’t without challenges, but they navigated international farm partnerships, streamlined processes, and built a team dedicated to success. With a commitment to continuous research, education, and development, the family envisions a marketplace that transcends the ordinary, while nurturing growth within the community. Whether in search of a romantic bouquet for Valentine’s Day or a stunning centerpiece for a special event, the Micciches pride themselves on having the ideal arrangement for each customer.

Two years ago, when Chandra (Chan) MacFarland’s husband Chris received a promotion to his “dream job” of General Manager with the Colorado Avalanche, Chan also stepped into a new role with the nonprofit The Avs Better Halves (ABH). ABH was founded the year the Avalanche came to Colorado in their 1995-96 season. The wives and significant others of the Avalanche players, management and staff volunteer with local nonprofits, organize fundraisers and events and now also provide support for Kroenke Sports Charities. Traditionally, the lead contact for the organization is the wife of the team’s General Manager. Chan explains, “I took over from Deb Sakic, and thankfully she’s still very involved with ABH. I also work closely with Melissa Landeskog so it’s a collaboration with an amazing group of women.” Deb Dowling, Vice President of Community Relations for Kroenke Sports Enterprises, shares, “The Avs Better Halves are an integral part of the Avalanche organization, supporting the community efforts of the team. Chan MacFarland’s compassion for community is evident in all that she does.” ABH assists Kroenke Sports Charities with several events including the Annual Holiday Tree Auction and Avalanche Charity Brunch. In addition, ABH members contribute by volunteering for community
organizations such as the Children’s Hospital Foundation, Make a Wish, Mothers’ Milk Bank and more. “It’s a lot of organizing. Checking schedules, seeing what the best times for volunteering are, who’s available for what events,” Chan shares about her role. It’s also rewarding. One of ABH’s signature events is the Charity Brunch & Fashion Show. The brunch features a silent auction including Avs Players’ Favorite Things crates and a fashion show with Avalanche players escorting kids who have overcome medical challenges. “Seeing the kids in the fashion show and how their different personalities come through is probably my favorite part of the day. There will be some who don’t want to leave the runway. They’re twirling and posing, and equally as sweet as the shy little girl who hides her face in the player’s neck the whole time. It’s just a heartwarming event,” says Chan. If Chan created a crate of her favorite things it would include a yoga mat, coffee mug and coffee, a wine glass and wine (Silver Oak for special occasions), as well as high-quality headphones because one of her favorite things is walking while listening to audiobooks. A favorite thing that Chan mentioned that won’t fit into a crate is the atmosphere and amenities of living in Parker, Colorado. CONTINUED >

Chan and Chris moved their family, they have three sons and a daughter, to Colorado in 2015 when Chris accepted the position of Assistant General Manager with the Avalanche. While house hunting they fell in love with Parker. “It’s prettier and greener than some of the areas we looked at and we love the outdoorsy, small town, quaint feel of Parker,” Chan reminisces. One of her favorite things is how Mainstreet transforms in the winter. “In my opinion, Mainstreet is the prettiest Hallmark Christmas street in America.”

Favorite places range from the more upscale, like Cinderella Ranch Boutique, to Parker’s small but amazing The Coffee Cabin. “I love going to The Coffee Cabin. It’s the only place I’ll get coffee. The owner, Wesley Crespi, just has a personality that makes you smile,” she shares. Chan continues, “Two things that I’m grateful for in my life, besides my family and friends, are being able to live in such a beautiful, welcoming area and having the opportunity to give back through my involvement with the ABH organization.”

BECAUSE. CHOCOLATE. C h o c o late Fond ue • 2 cups heavy cream • 1 pound premium semisweet chocolate (recommended: Lindt or Callebaut) • 1 tablespoon pure vanilla extract • 1 tablespoon brandy • Strawberries, bananas, pineapple, brownies, waffles, marshmallows, Oreos, pound cake, pretzels or any other dipping item of your choice! Put approximately four inches of water in a saucepan and bring to a slow boil. Place a mixing bowl on top and pour in the heavy cream. Let heat. Or, use a double boiler. Meanwhile, break up or chop the chocolate into small pieces. When the cream feels hot to the touch, add chocolate and whisk until smooth. Whisk in vanilla and brandy (optional). Pour into the fondue pot and light the handy fuel underneath. Keep the flame low as not to burn the fondue. Arrange dippers on a platter and enjoy. For the grown-ups, a spiked chocolate drink from our friend, Martha Stewart.

1/2 cup milk 1 cup heavy cream 1/4 cup whole coffee beans 2 ounces semisweet chocolate (61% Valrhona), chopped • 2 tablespoons Kahlua • 1 teaspoon confectioner's sugar • 1 tablespoon dark chocolatecovered coffee beans, chopped In a saucepan over medium heat, combine milk, 1/2 cup cream, and whole coffee beans. Bring to a simmer, turn off heat, cover, and steep beans for 1 hour. Strain liquid and return to saucepan; discard beans. Bring the milk-and-cream mixture back to a simmer, add chocolate, and whisk until incorporated. Remove from heat; whisk in Kahlua. Whip remaining 1/2 cup cream and the confectioners' sugar until soft peaks form. Divide the hot chocolate between 2 cups and garnish each portion with a dollop of whipped cream and a sprinkling of chopped chocolate-covered coffee beans.
When my kids were little, we would address valentines to classmates, deliver flowers to neighbors and decorate the house with hearts and snowflakes (cut from white coffee filters). For dinner, I would make their favorite meal: dessert! Why not? I'd melt chocolate (the good stuff) and let them line up their dippers. They thought dessert for dinner was magical. Of course, I'd fed them a protein-packed after-school snack and served "dinner" early so they could get their sugar wiggles out before bed. Delightful! Happy Valentine's Day!
