April is our Explore Issue and our 5th anniversary as publishers of Parker City Lifestyle. What an adventure it has been! By sharing stories of people and places with you, our readers, you have become the fabric of our stories too! This issue is full of experiences near and far. In our daily lives, it is easy to concentrate on things that bring us the most reward with the smallest amount of risk. We must leave some room for exploring, trying new places and things, being a beginner, and even getting lost. It is those times that are unstructured and open-ended where the space exists for connections to be made, friendships to be fostered and trust to be built. My parents and in-laws (Jeni’s and her siblings’ grandparents) took us on adventures that created lasting memories for our family. My husband's parents rented a house in the mountains outside of Breckenridge (we lived in Omaha at the time) and we couldn't wait to hike to an alpine lake – seven miles with three kids ages 9, 5, and 10 months definitely made for an unforgettable adventure! We still can’t remember the name of the trail, but I can see that lake with a dusting of snow in August as vividly as if we hiked it yesterday. We celebrated my parents' 40th anniversary in New Orleans where they went on their honeymoon and their 50th anniversary on a beach in Mexico. A few years ago, we all spent Thanksgiving on Maui. The lasting gift is that each person in our family appreciates the priceless memories that cannot be replicated by any material object, and we all love to travel – from the mountains to the oceans! Adventures can be close by and as simple as playing a board game out on the patio, walking a new trail or finding a fun ice cream place we've never been to before. Our hope is that this issue encourages you to make room for exploration. To prioritize time away from the regular schedule of life. To lose yourself on a trail or in a book. To book that trip you’ve been thinking about, to make time for the things that matter most to you but often come last on the calendar. If April showers bring May flowers, make time to play in the rain! Here’s your reminder to - and we say this with warmth in our hearts - get lost! ;) Happy April! No Worries, Mon! “Come back to the vibe that comes alive in Jamaica,” says the Jamaica Tourist Board on their website. Sounds nice, right? Especially after the past few years we've just experienced. And, in the spirit of wanting everything to be less complicated (and less dreary) post-COVID, wouldn’t it be nice to book a direct flight to said paradise? No worries, mon! Now you can! As of February 2023, Frontier Airlines offers the only direct flights (to date) from Denver to Montego Bay, Jamaica. So, whether you want to relax and soak up the sun or find adventure, your Jamaican paradise is just a little over 5 hours away. And the price is right too! As of March 2023, direct roundtrip flights from DEN to MBJ average $350 per ticket. Sounds terrific, right? But I bet you have questions. I spoke with Parker native Nicole Zillman of Zillman Weddings & Travel about traveling to Jamaica. And though she’s a local girl, Nicole is also a “Top Jamaica Specialist,” as designated by the Jamaica Tourist Board, and a top agent with the Sandals and Beaches Resorts. In addition, Nicole is a destination wedding specialist. So, who better to

spill the (Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee) beans about the “no worries” lifestyle of Jamaica? Here, Nicole shares her top tips for planning your trip and how best to enjoy Jamaica’s attractions once you’re there.

PLANNING YOUR TRIP When planning your trip to Jamaica, remember the two most important requirements for entering and exiting the country are your roundtrip (or onward) plane ticket and your passport. Make sure everything is in order, and then check and re-check that you have both before heading to the airport. You won’t be able to leave the U.S. without them. If you’re a little apprehensive about leaving the U.S. and making your way through immigration, customs, and security on your own, Nicole suggests signing up for Club Mobay, a multi-award-winning airport concierge and lounge service managed by VIP Attractions. For under $100 per roundtrip ticket (though a la carte services are available too), Mobay offers CONTINUED >

personalized service. First, they meet you at your arrival gate. Then, they escort you quickly through immigration, customs, and security. From there, they take you straight to their premium lounge, where a range of comforts await you as you wait for your hotel/resort transfer. Now that you have your ticket, passport, and you’re signed up for Mobay, now what? “Buy insurance!” urges Nicole. “If I could get all of my clients to do just one thing, it would be to buy travel insurance.” According to Nicole, travel insurance prepares you for whatever obstacles come your way—and it can be tweaked to fit your personal needs. SquareMouth is one site that offers a quick way to compare several travel insurance types, coverages, and companies to find your best policy. You can also buy your insurance through SquareMouth, but remember to book your accommodations first. That way, you can insure the total cost of your trip.

ACCOMMODATIONS Jamaica is best known for its all-inclusive resorts, so whether you’re traveling solo, with a partner, your family, or your tribe, Jamaica has an all-inclusive location for you. Montego Bay offers several adults-only and family-friendly resorts, including Sandals (21+) and Beaches (family-friendly)—both of which Nicole is very familiar. According to Nicole, Sandals and Beaches resorts offer a wide variety of accommodation levels—from super affordable to super luxury, but if you want “super luxury,” she suggests Sandals Dunn’s River, which is on the north coast of Jamaica and opens in May 2023. “It will be Sandals' most luxurious, modern, and innovative resort on the island,” she says. When asked about Excellence Oyster Bay, another brand-name resort in Jamaica, Nicole says, “All of my clients have been very happy with Excellence Oyster Bay!” That said, the Excellence is not the Jamaican resort her clients request most often. “I presume it’s because it’s about 45 minutes from the airport—between Montego Bay and Negril,” she says. “I think most guests would rather do the 90-minute drive and be on Negril’s Seven Mile Beach or keep the drive to a minimum and stay in Montego Bay. That said, it’s on a beautiful peninsula and very close to the dolphin park and ziplining/adventure park.” Want a smaller (but still popular) location? Nicole suggests booking your stay at Moon Palace in Ocho Rios—approximately two hours from Montego Bay. “And as for smaller or more boutique experiences, there are a lot of private villas in Jamaica, which are privately managed and fully staffed.” CONTINUED > AP R I L 2 0 2 3 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . Although known for its calm blue waters, sandy beaches, and water adventures, Nicole says Jamaica is constantly upping its game. Want to bring your kids but also want periodic freedom? The Franklin D. Resort & Spa (a little over an hour away from Montego Bay) offers free nanny service for your entire stay. At FDR, you will be greeted by a nanny who will remain with you from 8:30 a.m. to 4:40 p.m., for your entire stay, and will be responsible for attending to your children, keeping your suite neat and tidy, and assisting you with your vacation plans, Corinne McDermott of the Have Baby Will Travel blog raves about FDR and its nanny service, although she was initially weirded out by the prospect. “Within two minutes of arriving at our (incredibly spacious) room,” she writes, “my son’s dirty diaper was changed, and both kids were in their swimsuits and at the beach. I was left to unpack in peace with a cold Red Stripe.”

Jamaica is very family friendly—especially for families with small children—and has safe beaches and tons of kid activities, kid clubs, waterparks, dolphins, and watersports.” So, whether it’s culture, food, relaxation, or adventure you’re looking for, Jamaica has it all. Following are five top suggestions from Nicole, the Jamaica Tourist Board, and me:

Jamaica’s number-one rafting attraction is located approximately 20 minutes from Montego Bay. The embarkation area, “Rafter’s Village,” is situated on a natural horseshoe island that offers picnic grounds, a full service bar, two souvenir shops, swimming pool, and modern restrooms. Be sure to visit “Miss Martha’s Herb Garden,” while you’re there to view Jamaica’s famous medicinal and healing herbs.

THE BOB MARLEY MUSEUM: If you’re looking for reggae culture, visit Marley’s museum. With several shuttle bus services from the Montego Bay to Ocho Rios, getting there is easy. But beware! The bus ride can be a bit harrowing, as the roads are quite narrow and wind their way up to the mountain village of Nine Mile, which is nine miles from Negril (thus its name).

If you’ve always wanted to try bobsledding, you’ll want to visit Mystic Mountain. You’ll take a chairlift to the top of the mountain, where you can visit the Olympic museum, which features the Jamaican bobsled team, world-renowned sprinter Usain Bolt, and other Jamaican legends. Afterwards, enjoy the pool or head directly to the bobsled for your exciting trip down Mystic Mountain!

NEGRIL’S SEVEN MILE BEACH: Seven Mile Beach in Negril is considered to be one of the most beautiful beaches—and a visitor favorite. Families come to this beach because of its shallow and calm water, but there are plenty of water sports, including snorkeling and scuba diving, which can be done right off the shore.

FLOYD’S PELICAN BAR: Touted as one of the coolest bars in the world, the Pelican Bar sits approximately one mile from the shores of Black River, Jamaica. Constructed with sticks, driftwood, and palm branches, you can only get there by boat. Once there, you can sunbathe, swim in the ocean, drink a Red Stripe, and eat some local food. Have your taxi driver call ahead for your lobster or other fresh fish order. And remember to bring cash (no credit cards), your sunscreen, and water shoes. Meghan Kane’s fascination with Egypt started in the first grade. Her teacher read a book about ancient Egypt, and Meghan was hooked instantly. She came home, politely demanded her parents to take her to a museum, and proceeded to soak up book after book. Eighteen years later, the Parker, Colorado resident received the opportunity to travel to the country that captured her imagination. She documented the trip in a travel-sized leather journal with thick beige pages. A book about the Nile River rested underneath the notebook. “When something captures my attention, I want to consume all of it,” Meghan says. The Kane family trip consisted of five days in the capital city of Cairo, followed by a river cruise down the Nile. Though Meghan had traveled all over Europe, Egypt was different. “This was the first time I felt otherworldly. When I got to Egypt, I stepped into a different reality,” she says. With towering pyramids, statues of majestic pharaohs, and archaic temples, there are nods to an ancient civilization wherever you look. Horse-drawn carriages prance through bustling streets, and the Nile is still

responsible for most travel, tourism, and trade throughout this developing country. When you travel to Egypt, Meghan strongly recommends a guide. They’ll help you translate, show you where to go, and act as a bodyguard. However, until you get there, here’s a guide straight from Meghan’s notebook to help you plan your adventure.

GIZA PLATEAU (THE GREAT PYRAMIDS) If you visit Egypt, you must visit The Great Pyramids. Out of the seven wonders of the world, it is the only one remaining. Even though they were built over 4,000 years ago, they remain the tallest manmade structure in the world. You can even touch these ancient masterpieces and (for an extra fee) go inside them.

NATIONAL MUSEUM OF EGYPTIAN CIVILIZATION According to Statista, Egypt has 72 museums. The National Museum of Egyptian Civilization (NMEC) is a hot spot to learn about the first remnants of human existence all the way to modern-day Egypt. Some of the crown jewels of the NMEC are the mummies. Initially, these preserved royal bodies were found lumped together in a pit. Grave robbers CONTINUED >

took the treasures from their tombs and discarded the mummies. Miraculously, anthropologists could still identify their names and royal statuses years later. “We have mummies, but we’ve lost a lot of their treasures,” Meghan notes.

VALLEY OF THE KINGS Along the west bank of the Nile River in the town of Luxor rests the Valley of The Kings. This marvel contains 63 known tombs, including King Tut’s. For Meghan, the most astounding aspect of the tombs was the hieroglyphics. The paintings are well preserved and surround every square inch of many tombs. “Since I’ve been learning about The Valley of The Kings since the first grade, it was mind-boggling to see,” she says. Of the entire trip, the Nile River enthralled Meghan the most. According to Meghan’s research, The Nile has always been the way to get around Egypt. According to National Geographic, 95 percent of Egyptians live within a few kilometers of the Nile. Its waters provide irrigation that transforms

the dry desert into lush farmland. Stretching more than 4,000 miles and running through eleven countries, it’s no wonder that the Nile provided sustenance for the earliest humans and marked Egypt as part of the cradle of civilization. Yet, this vital river has a dark side. Home to vicious and disease-bearing predators, the Nile is complicit in thousands of deaths. However, the duplicities are what makes Meghan revere it. “Egypt is a double-edged sword. It has positive and negative sides, just like the human experience,” Meghan explains. “The country encapsulates how humans, regardless of how many centuries or millennia separate us, are pretty much the same throughout time. We are good, but we have greed; we are loving, but we have pride; and we have passions, but we’re protective over what’s ours.”

Travel Buddies A WELL-TRAINED DOG IS A HAPPY DOG WHO IS READY TO GO ON ADVENTURES WITH YOU According to a 2022 survey, nearly half of all Colorado households contain at least one dog. And if you’ve spent any time out and about, you know many dog owners like to take their best friends everywhere they go. You also may have noticed that not all those lucky dogs are the most well behaved, making for an unpleasant adventure for both human and pet. Indeed, a well-trained dog is a happy dog. That’s where Austin Printz and his team of trainers at Parker-based Blue Sky Canine come in. They train dogs (and owners) to make it pleasant—and safe—to take your dog on an adventure, be it to the nearest park or across the country. “It’s really about safety,” says Austin. “For the safety of the dog and for the safety of the people around you.” Blue Sky Canine works with both puppies and older dogs. “With adult dogs, we focus on behavior modification; correcting bad habits that cause problems or may have reactivity toward people or other dogs.” Adult dogs may take a bit longer to train, but Austin says, “With the right skills and the

right practice on the owner's side of things, you really can teach an old dog new tricks.” Austin expresses concern about so many untrained dogs out in the world—especially those who are off leash. “Your dog may be well-behaved, but it takes a good amount of training, dedication and consistency to really produce an off-leash dog. “ “In a perfect world, we can all let our dogs off leash because we know they'll come back when they're called because we went through training. But the reality is, most dogs aren’t fully trained to be off leash and there are a lot of factors we can't account for, like the other dogs being walked or at the dog park. And maybe for the right reasons, you want to let your dog off leash and let them play. However, dog parks are the number one place for dog fights. You can train all you want, but you can’t account for an untrained dog that may be aggressive or insecure around your dog. Maybe the owner thought it was friendly, but your dog or another dog triggered that aggression, and then a dog fight happens. I generally recommend against the off-leash dog parks, unless the situation is super controlled. And that’s really hard to find.” Austin says that solid training—for both dog and owner—teaches your dog to understand what it should and shouldn't be doing because you have installed a clear line of communication, allowing you and your bestie to feel confident about going on adventures together. In the end, Austin and his team want everyone to enjoy adventures with their dogs. “This is a really cool thing where I can help multiple people and their pets. When I started this, it seemed like it was going to be really rewarding. And sure enough, it has been great.”

When it comes to that next step in life, you may wonder what looking for a senior community could feel like. It could be etched with confusion and uncertainty. There are so many emotions that may come into play, but what about excitement and adventure, new friends and experiences? I had the opportunity to meet with Terra Bluffs Executive Director Cindy Burbach and Director of Sales and Marketing Jason Broberg. Terra Bluffs is a senior living community with assisted living and memory care options, and they’re opening their doors this summer in Parker. Their passion is to raise the bar for senior living, and from what I saw, they’re doing that and more. They’re bringing support to seniors that will help them thrive and march to the beat of their own drum in the best ways possible. Terra Bluffs has the aesthetic that will make anyone want to move in. Their mountain modern design brings the outdoors inside with elevated ceilings and grand entrances. The Sky Lounge has floor-to-ceiling windows that take advantage of the vast front range views, and they have courtyards in both assisted living and memory care, as well as walking paths throughout the entire community. The dining room also has live aspens to keep the Colorado feel, and they have an in-house chef to prepare fresh meals daily. The apartments are spacious, and while some have washer and dryers and direct access to a patio or courtyard, all are open to common areas where social activities and nurses are close by. They have a full activity calendar as well as a dog park for furry friends to play.

The amenities promote independence as well as reassurance for safety. Rocky Mountain Vista Health Center is in-house, which allows home health care and medical professionals to be on-site. While the building itself is bright, beautiful and brand new, it’s ultimately the team that makes this community absolutely breathtaking. Cindy has 30 years of nursing and senior living operations experience in the Denver metro area. Her team of directors are not only experts in their skill sets, but they also have a genuine heart for seniors. It begins with their core team and values of respect, integrity, hospitality, stewardship and humor. For them, it’s all about the residents and providing top-notch care both in health and in love. What better adventure than to experience life with people who authentically care about you? They also have an innovative fall program. This technology ensures that caregivers will be notified and present at any time to help assist when they’re needed. It cuts falls by 70%.
