July - Summer and Adventure Issue Summer is the perfect time to come up with a bucket list of activities to enjoy and ways to unwind and relax. Some of the best summers spent are often not filled with constant activities and trips, but are those that reflect a slower pace and simple moments of enjoying those around us. Although the “lazy days of summer” isn’t always something we can attain with our packed schedules, it is so refreshing to take some time to slow down and enjoy some of the simple pleasures that remind us of our own childhoods. Memorable activities can be a backyard barbecue with friends, making s’mores by a fire pit, spending a day on the water, eating ice-cream on a hot summer day, or simply taking in the night sky with someone you love. In honor of the Fourth of July, the team at Lifestyle wants to thank all veterans, those still serving and all of their loved ones for your service. Restoring Dignity and Livelihood with Care SECORCARES HELPS THOSE IN NEED GET BACK ON THEIR FEET
Skyrocketing inflation coupled with supply chain issues has affected many of us. It has made suburban poverty more of an issue than ever before right here in Parker and other South Denver suburbs. The food shortage is affecting the very agency that helps those in need – for the first time SECORCares has some empty shelves spanning part of its 24,000 sq. foot facility. SECORCares supports food insufficiency and is a free food market. Yet the scope of what the organization does is so much broader – in fact the task seems daunting until Dennis Gorton, the Executive Director for the last seven and a half years, explains

how he and 200 rotating volunteers throughout the year tackle it all. Dennis is calm and optimistic about SECOR’s future. He has taken the agency from its infancy to outgrowing each space it has occupied, including the current one. His servant leadership is evident in the genuine care and commitment he and his team have for every guest. When people walk through the front door of the spotlessly clean, sun-filled entrance, they are greeted by a Guest Care Consultant and their needs are assessed. Most guests shop every two weeks and will be able to get 80 to 90% of everything they need to feed a family of four. Many people in Douglas County are living paycheck to paycheck and just one unexpected change, such as a divorce, major medical bills, or job loss can become a catastrophic incident. “The agency is here to take care of them when life kicks them in the head and help them get back on their feet,” Dennis says. Major food partners are grocery stores, Costco, Trader Joe’s, Starbucks, Kneaders and Crumbl Cookies. Donations include fresh produce, meats, dairy, fresh bread, canned and dry goods and even dessert. Meal kits are popular because they are easy. Dennis says his favorite experience is when a mom comes in and says her about to be 7-year-old has never had a birthday cake. “We have always had a cake that says, ‘Happy Birthday,’ when this has happened. It’s so cool!” Dennis beams. Providing food is just part of the mission. Legal aid, medical assistance, and counseling are all available. SECOR’s Community

of Hope specializes in working with families and individuals to establish a balanced budget. The organization also assists with job skills and employment searches. Restoring dignity by establishing self-sufficiency and a livelihood is always the objective. Food for Thought is another entity that occupies the back of the warehouse and provides food for children when they are not in school. Christian Brothers Automotive Parker positively impacts the community every day—their partnership made the mobile market possible. They financed this venture that was launched in 2018 so the market could be taken on the road. How can you help? “The biggest need is funding,” Dennis explains. “We can purchase food at 20% of what anyone shopping on their own can.” The goal in the next two years is to expand with a full market in Aurora. secorcares.com

People who choose to live in Colorado have a well-known, and well-earned, reputation for their love of the great outdoors. The homeowners of this Elite Landscape & Outdoor Living project had a vision for an outdoor oasis just a step from their own backdoor with a focus on the ability to gather as a family and to entertain in the fresh Colorado air, no matter what season. They chose Elite to help transform their dated, mostly unusable, slanted backyard into a functional entertainment, relaxation, and recreational space. This project began with a handful of ideas. According to the family, “We wanted a space that was great for family dinners, grilling out and entertaining. We knew we wanted a grilling space, fire pit, a sitting area, bar, TV, music and an overhang.” By providing the homeowners with CAD designs and numerous material samples, Elite ensured this project met the entertaining, outdoor lifestyle envisioned by the owners.

Elite’s mission statement is to create extraordinary outdoor spaces, deliver exceptional quality, and to always exceed their client’s expectations. Elite’s project manager recommended a retaining wall along the back edge of the property which allowed for the installation of a large, level grass area. This area maximizes the use of the space and complements the owner’s goals of entertaining as well as visually extending the yard. While the retaining wall is an important contribution to the success of this project, the homeowner said, “I think the fire pit is everyone’s favorite… and the big screen outdoor TV that Dad can watch sports on, while the girls are inside consuming the latest Bachelorette episode.”
The custom designed gabled roof structure with engineered roof trusses ensures the outdoor kitchen and the dining area can be used year-round. At 24’ x 18’ the patio cover provides ample protection for the built-in grill, bar, seating, and outdoor television. The soffit, trim and roof were designed to match the design of the home and the custom tongue and groove cedar ceiling is a beautiful feature. The homeowner continued, “The covered patio and furniture invites us outside daily. Prior to this project, we wouldn’t spend much time, certainly not daily, in our backyard. It’s the moment we’ve all been waiting for— Trader Joe’s has come to Parker, and the town couldn’t be more excited. This is the national company’s eighth store in Colorado and the first in the southeast Denver-metro area. The ribbon-cutting ceremony was on May 6th, 2022, and with it came a local poms squad, a 3D chalk artist, and a line of eager customers. The store’s opening meant approximately 70 new jobs, 80 percent of which went to people living in the Parker area. It’s all part of Trader Joe’s community-oriented mission. According to one of the managers at the Parker store, Brett Schrimsher, TJ’s is a national store that aims for a neighborhood feel. “We designed the store to embrace Parker,” Brett says. “We’ve been overwhelmed with positivity from the community.” Brett isn’t kidding. Each wall of the store is adorned with Parker-specific murals, from the infamous downtown street lights to the mountain views. If you look close enough, you’ll find black and white images from Parker’s early days. In addition to the local ambiance of each store, customers flock to Trader Joe’s because of its unique product offerings. Wrapped in colorful packaging with unique branding and cartoon mascots, the majority of Trader Joe’s products cannot be found in other stores. All products go through a meticulous taste test which must be approved anonymously by a committee. When that’s over, roughly 3,500 products remain in stores at a time (compared to 50,000 in an average grocery retailer.) We’ve rounded up five of our favorite Summer Trader Joe’s Must-Haves. These 3,500 items rotate seasonally, so we have no guarantees for how long these items will be on the shelves–you better start shopping now!
1. Patio Chips This salty snack screams summer barbecue and gets its flavor palette from the grill. It combines four distinct chip flavors–Sea Salt & Vinegar, Delicious Dill, Homestyle Ketchup, and Smokin’ Sweet BBQ–into one bag. Every bite is a unique flavor explosion, so it’s quite difficult to quit munching. If you want to try something different that’s sure to please, you should drop $2.69 on a bag (or three) of these.
2. Strawberry Lemonade Joe-Joe’s Every Trader Joe’s aficionado knows about seasonal Joe-Joe’s. From Pumpkin in the fall to Candy Cane around the holidays, Trader Joe’s take on an Oreo flies off the shelves year-round. These Strawberry Lemonade cookies will be no exception. CRAFT AND C O C K TA I L GRAPEFRUIT CUCUMBER FIZZ MAKES 2 COCKTAILS

+ 4 ounces cucumber-basil infused gin + 1 cup fresh pink grapefruit juice + 1 cup ginger beer + 3 tablespoons basil cut into ribbons + Fresh grapefruit wedges + Fresh cucumber slices
HOW TO
01 Add a half cup of cucumber slices and 2 tablespoons of basil ribbons to 1 cup of gin.
02 Refrigerate overnight. 03 Strain the gin and reserve 4 ounces. 04 Divide ice between two tall glasses. 05 Add gin and divide the grapefruit juice between glasses. 06 Top with ginger beer and garnish with grapefruit wedges, cucumber slices and thinly sliced basil ribbons. 07 Enjoy. Cheers!

T H E PA R KE R FA R M ER’ S M A R K ET Mainstreet is the place to be on a summer Sunday in Parker. Over 100 vendors get up bright and early to prepare for the hustle and bustle of The Parker Farmer’s Market. They come loaded with everything from seasonal produce and breakfast burritos to artwork and bath bombs. By the time eager consumers arrive, homemade bread and fresh-cut flowers perfume the air, and excited chatter is buzzing about the tents. We rounded up a few vendors to help give you some good places to start on your shopping journey. You can visit the Parker Farmer’s Market any Sunday from 8:00 am to 1:00 pm until early October.

FLOWE R S FOR 3 GR E E N HOUSE To begin our time at the market, we’ll start at the booth likely to catch your eye first. The flower pots and hanging baskets are filled to the brim with bright blooms, and shoppers buzz around their beauty like bees. As you make it to the center of the tent, you’ll find fragrant herbs like basil and rosemary. Kevin Dennis and his wife named Flowers for 3 Greenhouse in honor of their triplet daughters. They’ve been a staple at the Parker Farmer’s Market for 19 years. Their favorite part by far is the relationships they’ve grown with the community (pun intended).
BAT H BOMB S BY SITH LOR D SWE E TS L LC Cristine Antolak’s business began as a hobby that got out of control. During the 2020 perils of remote schooling and quarantine, she kept herself busy making bombs. Don’t worry, these bath bombs are harmless! In fact, they are made from a natural formula Cristine invented after she realized her children’s skin reacted to other products. Stop by her booth and invest in your relaxation.
V IN TAGE CA F É By this point in your shopping trip, your stomach might be rumbling. Luckily, you can head over to the Vintage Café for some homemade poptarts or their infamous smores cookies. Husband and wife duo Megan and Brandon Jacobs started Vintage Café in 2019 after Megan left the corporate world to pursue her baking passion. This is their first year at the market, and they’re loving it. “The people are extremely friendly, and seeing all of the dogs is fun, too,” Brandon says. VIN TAGE POST E R S Let’s stick with the vintage theme, shall we? Mike Campbell has a knack for preserving creativity from the past, and it started with his wife’s Christmastime request. She had her heart set on a specific vintage Santa poster and couldn’t find it anywhere. Mike, a self-proclaimed photoshop geek, found a tattered image and worked his magic. A business was born. At Mike’s tent, you’ll find vintage posters from world wars, old western movies, Disneyworld, and more.

PA L A ZZI FA R M Our last stop at the market will give you a souvenir you can enjoy all week long. Palazzi Farm has been a staple booth for fresh vegetables, fruits, and flowers for 20 years. Jose Guiterrez, one of the farm’s owners, didn’t hesitate when asked about his favorite part of the market. “The people!” Jose says emphatically. “We are always packed!” People often bring Jose and the crew suggestions—and sometimes seeds—of what to plant. So, they do. In July you can look forward to Palazzi sweet corn, cucumbers, and pickles.
