Honoring Influential Men An inspirational man has the incredible power and privilege of shaping and mentoring the young people in their lives to grow and mature in a multitude of ways. Whether they are a father, a coach, an uncle or a boss, being a role model and leading by example can make a lasting impact on those watching. We can all probably think of a man in our life that has had a big impact on us at one time or another. Whether it was someone pushing us to be a better version of ourselves, or someone who sees the best in us, or someone we look up to for guidance, or perhaps someone we don’t personally know but that inspires us by their greatness, we can recognize the impact these role models can make in our lives. Even though our grandpa and dad, respectively, has been gone for 10 years, his legacy lives on through his children, grandchildren and even his great-grandchildren. He still encourages us and influences our decisions. This month we are honoring men and their contribution to the betterment of our community. We are highlighting men who put themselves second, work hard and inspire others to do the same. To all the men out there that are making a difference in someone’s life, big or small, we applaud you. The lasting impact that you are making and the ripple effect that often ensues is worth it.

Miss Colorado Chooses Parker as Permanent Home for Annual Competition The Parker Chamber of Commerce has brokered a deal between the Town of Parker and the Miss Colorado Scholarship Organization to make Downtown Parker the permanent home of the annual women’s competition. The Miss Colorado and Miss Colorado’s Outstanding Teen competitions will take place at Parker’s PACE Center on Memorial Day Weekends through, at least, 2027. This is the competition’s first permanent home. Parker will be designated the “Official Home of Miss Colorado.”

Upcycle! Coming to Parker Upcycle! will open its doors on June 11th. Owners Diana Myers and Collette Ostrander have teamed up to offer upcycled furniture and specialty paint for purchase, as well as classes on how to revive, restore and renew your own furniture. Upcycle! is located at 10841 S. Crossroads Dr, Suite 2.

THE NEED FOR SPEED SCOTT MOLITOR, OWNER OF PARKER-BASED MOFAB, LLC, HAS THE PASSION—AND COMPASSION—IT TAKES TO GROW A SUCCESSFUL BUSINESS. In 1997, Scott Molitor’s family moved to Parker— just in time to start his sophomore year at Ponderosa High School. “It was super traumatic for me,” he recalls. “Coming from a small town in Minnesota to Parker was a huge change.” Years later, with a thriving business and a family of his own, he can’t imagine living anywhere else. Scott is the owner of Mofab, LLC, a performance automotive shop specializing in part installations, custom alignments, small fabrication work and engine tuning for both street and race cars.

“My passion for cars started young,” Scott says. “I just wanted to make cars go fast, handle better, stop faster.” That’s exactly what Mofab is all about. Scott started his career working for an automotive shop in Parker that “made slow cars fast,” as his puts it. “It was a dream job and I worked for them for almost seven years.” After gaining all that experience, he made the big decision in 2010 to go out on his own. “I didn’t have any money—just my tools, experience and motivation.”

The new business began in a rented warehouse unit in Parker. With a solid reputation and his then-girlfriend’s, now wife’s, help with accounting, the shop got so busy that Scott outgrew the space in a matter of months, moved to a larger location in Centennial and hired his first employee. Within 3 years, the business outgrew that space and found more space in Denver. In 2017, Scott was approached by his old boss in Parker with an offer to buy the business where his career started. “I told him I wasn’t interested in the business, per se, but I would be interested in the building and assets.” After some lengthy negotiating, they came to an agreement and he moved his old toolbox back to the building where it all began.

“This time, it’s my name on the door and I’m in charge,” Scott says. “There are a lot of different emotions that one feels in this situation, so many different lessons learned. As any new business owner will tell you, making the leap is scary but you have to take the risk if you want a shot at the reward.” Mofab has grown from that first employee to a team of six—and Scott is currently on the hunt for a manager. It seems Scott’s business model may be ahead of its time—his shop runs on a four-day workweek. “I value time with my family and I want my team to have time with theirs as well.” It’s obvious that Scott cares deeply for his employees and wants the best for them. “This place wouldn’t exist without the team I have around me. Greg Radovcich FATHER OF FOUR, AGES 12-23 Being a dad is an adventure—every day will bring you something new. When they are little, their milestones bring you so much joy. In a way, you get to live your childhood through them; watching them enjoy what you used to as a kid yourself—the best part is buying the toys! Tough things about fatherhood are when kids are sick and you can’t help–poopy diapers—the worst—and knowing when Dad’s advice is welcome and when it isn’t. Mom will always level the playing field. When they get older it’s an amazing reward to see your values flourish in them and being able to speak one to one on the same level. My advice for my kids is to search for your true passion and pursue it, don’t settle. I spotted this somewhere: “If you don’t follow your passion, someone else will hire you to follow theirs,” and I can’t think of a truer statement. You have all you need to succeed in your own self. Failure takes character but having the strength to accept failure, make something of it and be able to move on from it, takes a stronger character.

Greg Hinman GRANDFATHER OF SEVEN, AGES 7 – 23 Being a grandfather has given me a second and somewhat more indirect opportunity at being a parent. It is like being a dad all over again, with the benefit of being one step removed from the direct responsibility for parenting. I can provide fatherly wisdom and advise but can defer the most difficult questions and decisions to their parents. It is especially rewarding to watch my children raising their own kids. They certainly use what they have learned from their upbringing while, at the same time, sprinkling in their own unique skills and ideas on parenting. I especially relish watching them gain a sense of empathy and better awareness of what we went through raising them as they are faced with some of the exact same parenting challenges presented to us when they were children. As for my grandchildren, they are the light of my life. They frequently make me smile, chuckle and, at times, laugh from the bottom of my belly. My grandchildren keep me young. They make me act like a child, doing and saying silly things. They challenge me to stay active and to do things I probably shouldn’t do at my age. My grandchildren amaze me, humble me and make me proud. They make me worry and grieve when they struggle and celebrate when they succeed. I learn from my grandchildren and they learn from me. They make me realize and reinforce what is most important in life. My grandchildren and my children are my life. I know I will never paint a masterpiece or write the great American novel, but I am confident that I will leave a more significant legacy. A legacy of family history, traditions and values that will live on for generations.

Jeff Toborg’s interest in politics started at age 18 thanks to the persistence of his grandmother. At the time, his local government refused to put a new roof on the senior citizen’s home. So, Jeff’s grandmother and her friends conjured up a plan to save the day: urge Jeff to run for city council. Though he didn’t win that time around, by age 24, Jeff had found his niche on the council, as well as a passion for community involvement. Years later, Jeff became a city councilman in Parker before being elected mayor in 2020.

Jeff, a California native, jokes, “I wasn’t born in Colorado, but I got here as soon as I could!” His day job involves project management in healthcare IT, hoping his business acumen serves as an asset to the Parker community. Though economic growth is a primary objective for Jeff, he hopes that expansion can be done without sacrificing Parker’s personality. “While we grow, my goal is to maintain Parker’s small hometown feel. I hope neighbors still help neighbors, and that we don’t lose the charm and community that drew people here in the first place,” he says. As mayor, Jeff serves the community though fostering the growth of existing businesses, celebrating new businesses and fighting for legislation to protect Parker. However, he boils down service to “being open and available to the community.” In his free time, Jeff enjoys spending time with his wife and three kids, as well as exploring Parker’s extensive trails and open spaces. His rule of life is simple: “I love my God, I love my family and I love my community. I work hard on all of those relationships.” CONTINUED >

Lance Brooks

Lance Brooks has not only made a name for himself through a successful construction company, 5 Rings Construction, but also through his athletic career resulting in world championships and competing in the Olympics. Before being a business owner and world champion, Lance grew up in a small town in Illinois, often working on construction sites and other jobs, which he credits with teaching him the value of hard work. Playing sports growing up, his hard work led to becoming an All-American athlete in track and field before participating in the 2012 Olympics and the 2013 World Championships. Eight years ago, after deciding to leave behind days of rigorous training and travel, Lance started 5 Rings Welding and Construction, working as a contractor in Parker and the surrounding area. Additionally, his nephew operates 5 Rings in Lance’s home state of Illinois. Besides being an Olympic athlete, Lance isn’t your average contractor–he truly strives to build trust with his clients and values loyalty. He suggests that others looking to find pride in their careers should be brave in their decisions, as difficult decisions often lead to the most rewarding results. He recommends surrounding yourself with good people you can learn from to continue your personal and professional growth. Apart from his welding and construction business, Lance enjoys spending time with his family and spending time outdoors, especially going up to the mountains. He is always open to new opportunities, stating that he loves what he does and will do it forever, but is open to finding new pursuits as well.

Anton Sloan has an eye for improvement. When he sees that something can be done a better way, he jumps on the challenge. When Anton moved from Scotland to the United States, he worked as a pilot. Then, as his family and bills grew, he decided to exercise his entrepreneurial chops and started a coffee roaster. In its early stages, the roaster was one of the fastest growing businesses in Denver. One afternoon, he noticed that people in his neighborhood were getting overcharged for windows. He told his wife, “You know, I think we can offer some better pricing.” He sold the roaster and drew up a business plan. Sloan Windows and Doors was born. Sloan Windows and Doors specializes in windows, pergolas, doors and coverings such as blinds and shutters. The family business is run by Anton, his wife, Jana, their four children and

some of their children’s friends. It’s a tight knit group—they don’t hire any subcontractors that aren’t considered family. “I couldn’t do this business without my sons,” Anton says. “We trust each other and we know we’re going to do things the right way without cutting corners.” According to Anton, the window business is a rat race. The issue that his neighbors faced years ago isn’t going away—if anything, it’s worse. So, Anton and his family do what they can to operate with integrity and keep prices low. “People are just getting ripped off all over the place,” Anton says. “We just want to help people. He is grateful for his earlier career, but is happy with where he is now, as it’s less chaotic, sleeps in his own bed and spends more time with his children. He takes great pride in the work he does with the Chamber, recognizing the personal impact that small businesses have on their owners and the community. As he says, “The jobs you create mean a kid can play baseball or go to dance class or afford college. You can’t have a thriving community without thriving businesses.” He sees his role with the Chamber as being one of support for business owners, as it can be exhausting and lonely to try to start a new business. Nurturing the ambition, commitment and sense of communal responsibility of business owners energizes him each and every day. With over fifty new members joining the Chamber in the first quarter of 2022 alone, Parker is a growing business environment. T.J. believes in creating opportunities for others and encourages people to push through fear and go after opportunities that present themselves. He says it is important to know what you are good at and what you are not–then hire people who fill those gaps. He advises to invest in your mentors and to be one whenever you can. And, finally, to give others more love than you expect in return. T.J. says that he inherited his pleasures from his French-born mother and loves flowers, large bodies of water, a good drink, seafood and R&B music. One day in the future, T.J. hopes to make another career change–running a small comedy club somewhere on a beach.

STORY SHOWING Nic Davis is a cool guy. Humble, jovial. He’s honest, passionate, oh, and an Emmy-winning filmmaker. You can understand why I was nervous to interview him. Yet, upon meeting, his open presence is calming, even through the lens of Zoom. Come to find out, Nic shares my feelings on interviews. “It’s always a little nerve wracking,” Nic jokes when asked what it’s like to interview A-listers, like Jason Mraz and Dave Matthews. Before interviewing Jason, Nic and his team were given a strict, one-hour time limit from Jason’s managers. Turns out, Jason had different ideas and showed Nic and the team around his home. Nic Davis is the founder and CEO of 4:08 Productions, a production company driven by storytelling. Their most recent and first feature-film-length production is Enormous: The Gorge Story. The Gorge is an outdoor amphitheater in George, Washington that’s hosted a number of well-known and well-love musicians since its inception. The venue is a sort of pilgrimage for artists and fans alike. Though difficult to get to, the journey proves worth it.

“This is not a puff piece,” Nic clarifies. The team strove to capture the Gorge from all angles, good and bad. Like when Steve Miller used his interview to complain about the dust, chaos and no-rules attitude that comes with preforming there. Passions for film and music fueled Nic to piece together his debut feature-film on the Gorge. He remembers classmates road tripping there over weekends and determined to bring those stories to the screen. Born in Denver, Nic attended University of Montana to study journalism. Finding that traditional journalism wasn’t his thing, his love for storytelling carried him through his degree. Nic had a taste for adventure, traveling, meeting new people and was willing to do what it took to make a career out of it. “[Storytelling] gets you this window into so many people’s lives that not everyone gets,” the aspired filmmaker explains. While on his search for success, Nic took any and all unpaid and low-paying jobs to jam his foot in the door. Once the got ball rolling, it didn’t stop. 12-hour days wriggled into the norm.

When Nic found time to sit down with me, he was working on five projects simultaneously. When a packed calendar tempts shoddy work, Nic sticks to core storytelling principles: honesty and emotion. When he pitched the Gorge as a feature film documentary, producers thought he was crazy–there can’t be emotion in an open field. Turns out, after seven years of blood, sweat and tears (“Literally.”), it seems a place can portray emotion. Take the woman who spread her sister’s ashes over the Gorge to let her sister “dance on the cliffs forever.” It can be easy to move on from a project once it’s completed, but Nic likes to watch the story live out its life. He likes to read online comments about Enormous: The Gorge Story and finds comfort knowing people enjoy what he’s created.

As for what’s next, Nic is looking to slow that speeding ball. After years of saying yes, he’s learning to say no. Nic wants 4:08 films to have purpose, both emotionally and financially. And although it takes a lot of dough to produce an independent documentary, Nic’s monetary focus is on donating proceeds to charities that mean something to him and to the topics his films depict. Navigating his way into a slower lifestyle, Nic hopes other young filmmakers take a moment to slow down and soak in the moment. Breaking into the film industry spotlight necessitates a fast-paced lifestyle with little separation from home and work, but you have to find beauty in perusing your passion for creativity. “It took me 20 years to become an overnight success,” Nic smiles.

Outdoor pizza ovens are a great way to get dads outside this month while keeping the kitchen cool. Creating pizzas can be fun for the whole family and themed-based names fire up the imagination too! Think Disney movies for kids’ parties, Broadway shows for outdoor movies under the stars and famous fathers for—you guessed it—Father’s Day. Ideas to get you started include: • The Danny Tanner (Full House) • The Dwayne Johnson (The Rock and voice of Maui in Moana) • The Legend (John Legend) • The Alexander Hamilton

The Danny Tanner INGREDIENTS • Pizza dough (store bought or make your own!) • Pizza sauce (store bought or–you know the drill)

1/2 pound Italian sausage 1 head of garlic 1 Sweet onion sliced Mozzarella cheese shredded

Preheat oven to 400. Cut off the top of your head of garlic, coat in olive oil, wrap in aluminum foil and cook for 30 minutes until cloves are soft. Cook sausage and break up with a spoon until cooked and crumbled. Cook onions on the stovetop over medium heat in olive oil until soft and caramelized. Roll out your dough and top with sauce. Add garlic cloves, sausage, and onions. Cover with a generous amount of shredded mozzarella and cook according to your pizza oven’s instructions! Enjoy!
