Celebrating the Ladies

May 2022 PUBLISHER S

Joan Dameron | joan.dameron@citylifestyle.com Jeni Fleck | jeni.fleck@citylifestyle.com EDITOR IAL COOR DINATOR

“The success of every woman should be the inspiration to another. We should always raise each other up and have each other's back. Make sure you're very courageous: Be strong. Be extremely kind. And above all be humble.” – Serena Williams Our May issue is dedicated to celebrating women. As we reflect on the many women in our lives, we are thankful for each one and the impact they have made. One of the best qualities a woman can possess is having confidence in herself while being able to call out the beauty, talent and greatness in other women too. Women celebrating and encouraging other women is a beautiful and rewarding thing. When we share encouragement and consideration to those around us, barriers break down and warmth follows. This month, we are sharing stories of women who have made their mark on our community in one way or another. They are entrepreneurs, trailblazers and risk-takers. May is the perfect time to reflect on the inspirational women in your own life and to reach out to them and thank them for the impact they have made. You won't regret it.

PEOPLE + PLACES HOW LOCAL ARTIST CINDY BERRY SULLIVAN IS CONNECTING TO PARKER THROUGH LIVE DRAWINGS

18

T R E N D SE T T E R | A RTS + CULTURE

Cindy Berry Sullivan entered Fika Coffeehouse on Mainstreet in a swirl of color. She wore a floral shirt wrapped in an orange shawl and her dangly green earrings hung alongside her face-framing curls. She saw my black Moleskine notebook open on the table, full of questions waiting for her to answer, and enthusiastically asked, “Do you journal?” That’s how the interview went. I actually didn’t end up referring to my questions in the journal at all, as we chatted about life and art for about ten minutes before diving face first in her creative process. She opened her iPad and revealed image after image of her work: vignettes of bustling downtown streets, tender images of her six-year-old step-granddaughter

and life-sized renderings of Elvis. Though she has a background in traditional painting and drawing media, now she focuses on digital art. For Cindy, the arts are a way of connecting and being present. She spent most of her adulthood popping through different parts of the United States due to job transfers. As a voracious learner, no time was wasted. In Connecticut, she earned a bachelor’s degree in Education. Pittsburgh provided her with museums galore, creative writing classes and an enlightening group of filmmakers. In Florida, she found the Armory Art Center, as well as some incredible teachers. In Law Vegas, she shed her fear of the performing arts by painting publicly on enormous canvases. Though Cindy is especially inspired by movement (more on that later), she was grateful when Annapolis Maryland taught her how to put down roots. In Annapolis, Cindy started to do live drawings. She would park her truck and draw what she saw on site. She would attend concerts and draw the musicians as they performed. Coffee shops became potential canvases, as every person present was a possible muse. When Cindy and her husband moved to Parker exactly one year ago, she had a system for connecting with the community: Step 1: Go where the people are. Step 2: Draw them. As an artist who focuses on people and places, movement is a key feature of Cindy’s artwork. Her expressive style uses mark and color to convey emotion. From squirmy kids to jumping crowds, she has mastered the art of capturing invisible energy. Cindy was born with an essential tremor that causes involuntary shaking in her hands. However, the tremor translates to an energy in her work that can’t be fabricated. She doesn’t bemoan the lack of control—she harnesses it. In doing so, her work takes on a life of its own—it becomes more human. “I’ve found that weaknesses in everyday life are strengths in art,” Cindy says. As she shared more about her technique, I began to see the world through her eyes. In the

coffee shop where we sat, a little boy was playing with race cars. He added the occasional “Beep! Beep!” for effect as his mom worked and sipped espresso. “Cindy—that scene would be great for you to draw,” I said, hoping she’d take the bait. Cindy pulled up her canvas with a flourish and began to draw, verbalizing her process every step of the way. First the shapes, followed by the shading, and—at last—the color. Within ten minutes she was sharing her image with the boy’s delighted mom. “Sometimes the art world can get pretty angsty. I’ve realized that there’s nothing wrong with making people happy,” Cindy says. “I focus on elevating the ordinary–if I serve as one person’s inspiration, that’s enough.” You can find Cindy’s work for sale at cindyberrysullivan. com. She is also available for commissions.

Living Well How women can live well in a world telling them to be someone they’re not. ARTICLE BY MADELEINE KRIECH | PHOTOGRAPHY BY JENI FLECK

“Loose 30lbs before summer!” “Shred inches around your waist!” “Get back to the better you!” It’s maddening to be taunted by skinny women with bright teeth, porcelain skin and synched waists while trying to buy groceries. Even while knowing the images are doctored, your brain just keeps pick, pick, picking at your self-perceived flaws. To get to that “perfect” body, we hate ourselves into working out. Then we hate ourselves for hating ourselves. It’s an exhausting cycle. Yet, wellness doesn’t have to mean losing weight or fitting into old clothes. It’s about caring for your body as is carries you through

life. It’s becoming a you that concurs your goals, smashes glass ceilings and lives a long, prosperous life. “As an industry, we have to be accepting of people where they are,” states Shelli Sifrit, co-owner of The Exercise Coach. “We have to provide an environment where you can feel safe.” Boutique fitness studios, smaller gyms hosting fewer members, can be a solution for gym-hesitant women, as they offer a close community of trainers and members. Parker hosts several of these boutique-style gyms including Club Pilates Parker, 30 Minute Hit, HOTWORX and The Exercise Coach.

The fitness industry faces persisting criticism on its lack of body representation, habitually opting for sleek, toned bodies over ones with rolls and/or disabilities. In Diane Sparks’, owner of Club Pilates Parker, words, the fitness industry excludes “grocery store bodies,” aka the everyday, errand runner, a truly common body. “We look at health and think thin people are healthy,” explains Erika Wood, co-owner of 30 Minute Hit, women-only gym. “What we look like on the outside is not indicative of what’s going on on the inside.” Aging women also find themselves excluded from the fitness moguls’ narrative. Shelli hopes to see more fitness studios address women as they age. For herself and The Excursive Coach, it’s all about building strength to minimize muscle loss. When you build muscle, daily activities become easier as you grow older. “We want to be stronger as we age,” says Jillian Sparks, owner of HOTWORX. Besides physical benefits of working out, exercise helps subdue anxiety and depression and releases endorphins, a hormone that is known for boosting overall well-being. Focusing on your mental health allows you to complete other responsibilities to the best of your ability. “In some ways, you have to be selfish and put yourself first so you can help others out,” states Yuan Rapp, a Master Trainer with Club Pilates Parker. For those considering adding to their usual wellness routine, HOTWORX uses infrared heat during classes to reduce inflammation, reduce blood pressure, build collagen, detox impurities and aid the

immune system. And if that isn’t enough, Club Pilates Parker offers Teacher Training, a comprehensive program for becoming a certified pilates instructor, taught by Yuan. In a world where women are held to high expectations, use your wellness journey to slow down and take time for yourself. Learn to love your body—bumps and lumps included. Celebrate a personal record, trying a new class, even just getting up and moving. Wellness is not about pounds, inches, or numbers. It’s about making today better than yesterday. As women are continually told to smile more, be less bossy, and achieve an unreachable beauty standard, rejoice being alive and feeling good.

HOW THESE SIX INFLUENTIAL, PARKER WOMEN ARE MAKING STRIDES TOWARDS A BETTER TOMORROW IN OUR COMMUNITY.

PHOTOGRAPHY BY RAEMI RUE PHOTOGRAPHY

Dr. Christina Pham is not only a young entrepreneur who opened her own dental practice at the age of 31 but is also characterized by her infectious smile and calm demeanor. The daughter of Vietnamese immigrants, Christina initially began college as a business major, but realized she wanted a career where she could make her own way in the world without relying on others. She initially worked with a dental service organization, finding the setting to be too corporate, leading her to start her own practice. In January 2020, it was just her and one assistant. Now, Christina leads a slightly larger staff as the boss of her own workplace. Her advice to women working to create a career they are proud of is to evaluate where they want to be and create a plan of action for how to get there. When asked what she likes to do with her free time, she wasted no time with her answer—traveling. “I want to be in a place, financially, where I have time to travel and work,” she explained, citing that she hopes to be able to occasionally take a step back from business to enjoy life while sometimes practicing volunteer dentistry. Christina is an example of just how much it can pay off to take a leap of faith and make a decision for yourself.

Ashley Baller

Community is key for Ashley; she advises other women to find a supportive community as well and to be confident in their careers.

The best way to describe the reigning Miss Rodeo Colorado is through a specific interaction while we sat down for coffee. While we spoke, a young girl came up and asked Ashley Baller if she is Miss Rodeo Colorado (it was hard to miss as she was in a beautifully decorated cowgirl hat and sash). This young girl went on to tell Ashley how her late mother was a fan of the competition and always wanted to meet a Miss Rodeo Colorado winner. Through this heartfelt interaction, you could tell the story touched Ashley and she was poised and genuine the entire time. That was when I knew Ashley Baller was more than just a Miss Rodeo Colorado titleholder, but a true leader who wants to help others. Ashley has been riding as a first-generation cowgirl since first grade and is the first Latina to win the title of Miss Rodeo Colorado. She hopes to inspire others by increasing collaboration between English and Spanish speakers through events. Community is key for Ashley—she advises women to find a supportive one as well and to be confident in their careers. She loves spending time with her family and two horses. Her future goals include winning Miss Rodeo America in November, obtaining a master’s degree and continuing to make a positive impact in her community.

Dawn Danner If you’ve been in Downtown Parker recently you may have noticed the new Nest Boutique run by Dawn Danner and her husband. Dawn has always wanted to open a boutique shop. When she lost her son, Tristen, to a fentanyl overdose in 2020, she poured herself into working to open Nest as a place where everyone who comes in feels accepted. “I want to bring some joy to people,” Dawn explains. Yet, her goals are so much more inspiring than that: she hopes to reduce the shame around drug addiction. “Tristen was so much more than his struggles with addiction,” she says. Dawn knows if she can help just one mother speak to her children about the dangers of drugs, or if Tristen’s story inspires one person to take precautions against illegal drugs, then what she and her family have gone through is not for nothing. Dawn desires to tell Tristen’s story bravely and to emulate his love. Her fervor and adoration are evident when she talks of her son and how his brightness shines through Nest. She urges other women to find a supportive tribe, to work towards finding a purpose and to remember that we are all messy sometimes and that’s okay. Despite the sadness she can feel, Dawn feels gratitude for those in her life who have supported her. Looking ahead for herself and Nest, she hopes to partner with a nonprofit that offers second chances to young people turning their lives around from addiction. If you’re looking to circulate kindness, share #GoodVibesforWoob, a campaign Dawn created to keep the love for Tristen flowing. Not only has Dawn impacted our community through Nest, but also through spreading Tristen’s story and reminding us all to laugh a little, even on the darkest days.

Brittany Higgins and Winston, who is up for adoption at dogrescuecolorado.org.

Brittany Higgins

Brittany encourages everyone to remember that even if you’re making the smallest dent, it makes a difference.

Brittany Higgins brings a new meaning to the name Supermom. In addition to caring for her kids and having a full-time job, Brittany is the founder of Highway 50, a nonprofit that transports animals between shelters for adoption. Brittany started volunteering with Animal Rescue of the Rockies at 19, doing occasional animal transports and eventually started Highway 50 as a way to aid the adoption process. She started small, working solo for seven years. Now Highway 50 has 15 volunteers who assist in animal transport. Her advice for other women is to do what you love, find what brings you joy and go for it. She encourages everyone to remember that even if you’re making the smallest dent, it makes a difference. With Highway 50, that could mean fostering or adopting from local shelters, raising awareness through social media, or volunteering to transport animals in need. Brittany also has advice for mothers who want to find time to pursue volunteering and/or other activities: “Schedule time for yourself and find a community that supports your passion.” In the future, Brittany hopes to stay in her sweet spot, watching her family and Highway 50 grow. Brittany is a prime example of how anyone can turn their passion into something that positively impacts the community. CONTINUED >

Fay Matsukage For decades, Fay Matsukage has been breaking boundaries as one of the first AsianAmerican female attorneys permitted to practice law in Colorado and continues to at the age of 65. Born and raised in Honolulu, Fay always knew she wanted to go to the continental states, leading her to move to Colorado for college and law school. When asked what originally began her interest in law, Fay joyfully spoke about her father who had also gone to law school but worked in real estate financing. Her proximity to her father’s business and his impact on her influenced her to represent entrepreneurs in corporate and security law. A piece of advice that she holds dear to her is “don’t let stereotypes stop you.” Fay explains how women are often told to accommodate others and how many are overlooked for their gender and/or ethnicity, but that should never stop anyone from being strong in who they are. Aside from being a trailblazer, Fay loves to garden, cook, play golf and spend time with her family. She hopes to continue mentoring young attorneys, law students and entrepreneurs as well as spend more time traveling. After her fervent dedication to a successful career, some downtime is just what this role model needs.

Galia Spychalska Morrow

Galia advises everyone to have integrity and honesty when they think about what they want to do with their lives.

Galia Spychalska Morrow is more than just the owner of Parker’s adorable antique shop, Search & Rescue Antiques, but also a devoted mother, wife and outspoken activist for people with disabilities. Galia, a registered nurse of 15 years, decided to take a step back from work to become a stay-at-home mom and caretaker for her oldest son Casper, who was born with a rare type of autism known as #6 PPPS. Galia describes this decision as “scary, but worth it.” Searching for antiques and unique vintage finds became an outlet while taking care of Casper and her youngest son, Mark. After losing a close friend, Galia decided to take the leap and begin her very own antique shop. She and her husband work to make sure everyone feels accepted when they walk in and advocate for children and adults with disabilities, including advocating for access to nursing care. Galia explained she has a “great community within the store” and it has strengthened her relationship with not only her family but also the Parker community. Galia advises everyone to have integrity and honesty when they think about what they want to do with their lives. She and her family hope to expand their shop and partner with organizations that work to create safe spaces for people with disabilities. It’s safe to say Search & Rescue Antiques wouldn’t be what it is without Galia’s keen eye for vintage pieces and care for those around her.

MAGIC IN THE MOUNTAINS HOW MARY RUTH AND GREG VINCENT ARE RESTORING GLEN ISLE RESORT TO ITS ORIGINAL GLORY ARTICLE BY KATI CAHILL AND JOAN DAMERON | PHOTOGRAPHY BY JENI FLECK

“I feel like Glen Isle is its own spirit and we are along for the ride.” Mary Ruth Vincent

Topophilia, or love of place, is often thought to be lost in modern society. A place that elicits these strong emotions involves a sacred space and scenic qualities. Like any special relationship, intense love of a place is worth nurturing and can strengthen a family’s social fabric. Mary Ruth Vincent developed this emotional attachment with a place that was both sacred and scenic when she was growing up. Her family traveled from Texas to Glen Isle Resort near Bailey, Colorado each summer and it became part of her being. As Mary Ruth recalled her childhood trips, the memories flooded back. It was that magical place they returned to year after year where the children could play and explore the forested mountains and the river. Campfires, outdoor movies and live music, the old playground and chuckwagon dinners were all part of the charm. When Mary Ruth married Greg, she shared her dream of someday owning Glen Isle. Glen Isle is a story steeped in history. Believed to be built on old Ute campgrounds, the resort was originally built to attract upper-class Denverites with its proximity to the city and breathtaking location along the Platte River. The resort opened as a fishing lodge and golf, tennis and fishing were the main pastimes in those early days. An excerpt from an article titled “The Last Resort” by Betty Moynihan in the May 1979 issue of the High Timber Times described it like this. When the Colorado and Southern Railroad wound its way through mountain forests and table lands early in the 1900’s, many summer resorts and vacation hotels sprang up along its route. When the railroad

pulled up stakes in 1937, most of these resorts folded. Glen Isle is one of the exceptions. It has been a vacation retreat since 1901 and is still catering to guests. Just under an hour from most locations in the Denver area and right off of Highway 285, which used to be the railroad, Glen Isle Resort is so close yet a world away. The rounded front of the lodge follows the lines of the old tree it was built around. The level below the main floor housed the rec room and a bat habitat occupied the upper level of the lodge – a natural way to keep mosquitoes and other insects at bay. The 14, upstairs guest rooms all have original furniture. Explore the grounds and see the portal or framing trees that the Native Americans manipulated, signified by the ligatures that caused the branches to grow in a different direction, to let spirits in or out or to frame a view such as a magnificent mountain peak. Barbara Tripp was gifted the property by her parents in the 1940s and when she passed away in 2012, her children decided to sell Glen Isle. Mary Ruth’s dream was about to come true. It was the deep love of this place that kept Mary Ruth and Greg grounded with a vision that was sometimes hard for even them to see. When they purchased the property almost five years ago on July 21, 2017, obstacles presented themselves from the very beginning. From obtaining financing to the pandemic that sidelined weddings and navigating the proper

legal channels to begin building their own home on the property after living in the various rooms in the lodge, it has been an uphill climb. Their commitment to preserving and sharing Glen Isle kept them doggedly focused. Today guests have overnight options ranging from peaceful campsites to spacious cabins with fireplaces (one even has a hot tub!), patios, grills and fully equipped kitchens and everything in between. Bring your own food and you will never have to leave. Weddings at Glen Isle are both intimate and breathtaking. Further back on the property a meadow is the perfect setting for ceremonies and a clearing along the Platte River surrounded by pines is where Mary Ruth and Greg string twinkling lights in the trees for receptions. Walk down to the Platte to fish (a fishing license is required), play disc golf and hike some of the trails that begin right where the 150-acre property ends. Larger groups can stay together in the lodge and 16 of the 18 cabins have been painstakingly renovated to provide modern conveniences while still embracing a rustic ambiance. The resident horses are eager to be loved by guests and will never turn down a treat of a carrot or an apple. Trail rides aren’t available on the property because most of the friendly horses are rescues. Stables are nearby in Conifer and Fairplay. The resort is dog-friendly, and kids and canines will both have a wonderful time in the fresh mountain air. The lodge has been cleaned up in the last five years yet crossing the bridge and walking into the historic building centered around the ancient tree is like stepping back in time. It hasn’t changed much since the first guests debarked from the train and walked up the path with their luggage in tow. The quaint gift shop offers souvenirs and gift items. An unexpected gift is when families that have been coming to Glen Isle for years (children

now bringing their children and grandchildren) find black and white photos of grandparents, great grandparents, aunts and uncles in the many worn scrapbooks that have been kept over the years. Barbara Tripp loved collections of all kinds, and prior to her death, had purchased some Native American artifacts, some dating back as far as 1000 AD. Now, Mary Ruth and Greg are partnering with Denver University to research the cradleboards and artifacts from various tribes that grace the walls in the main part of the lodge.

Mary Ruth and Greg Vincent are stewards of this historic place. They are preserving and enhancing the buildings and grounds while maintaining the history. It is a love affair that is so palpable that you can feel it when you visit. Now the couples’ dream is to see one of their sons take over this legacy they are building. Visit Glen Isle for the beauty and experience the magic. “I feel like Glen Isle is its own spirit and we are along for the ride,” Mary Ruth says. glenisleresort.com

Explore Denver’s Urban Side Like Never Before

A Denver Staycation The urban experience in our extraordinary city is unlike any other, including a booming collection of sleek boutique hotels, one of the most engaging arts and live music scenes anywhere, and elevated restaurants, shops, museums and galleries amid lively and diverse neighborhood pockets. Our team of local lifestyle fanatics at City Lifestyle are thrilled to collaborate with our very own Visit Denver to present a uniquely crafted guide paired with an exclusive GIVEAWAY* opportunity to explore our city with a 3-night staycation. We know firsthand why year-after-year Denver is ranked as one of the best places to reside, so now is a great time to tap into this local feature on some of Denver’s most compelling local experiences. With recent recognition and rankings, such as landing its spot as a top 10 city in the world to visit (Lonely Planet), leading the nation in attendance at performing arts events and exhibitions (National Endowment for the Arts), a repeat nominee for its foodie and craft beverage scene, and home to THE most attended concert venue of any size anywhere in the world (Billboard), Denver is bursting with profound cultural and lifestyle experiences, and we’re here to round up our local recommendations for you. One neighborhood that sets Denver apart is Cherry Creek North, otherwise known as the Mile High City’s ultimate luxury shopping and dining destination with the highest concentration of small businesses. A well-known favorite of the locals, Cherry Creek feels like a city within a city with its urban oasis atmosphere. Get your street chic and fun-filled soles ready for 16 walking-friendly blocks of shopping, pampering, entertaining and feasting. With ample annual events to check out, such as the Food & Wine and Cherry Creek Arts festivals, you can pair your festival-fan side with high-end couture hunting at Cherry Creek Shopping Center, perusing Hermes, Chanel, Stuart Weitzman and Louis Vuitton, just to name a few.

Enter for a chance to win a 3-night getaway to Denver! As you work up an appetite, prepare to drink and devour the exquisite fare that Cherry Creek offers with more than 50 restaurants, making it almost impossible to choose and most definitely requiring a return visit. Whether your palate is yearning for a farm-totable, multi-course meal by an award-winning chef, or a burger and locally brewed craft beer with a side of fries, you’ll find flavor profiles to satisfy every craving. One such sophisticated and stylish restaurant destination includes Local Jones inside the urban chic Halcyon, a hotel in Cherry Creek. Equal parts nostalgia and composure, this neighborhood restaurant serves up great food in a socially engaging atmosphere, offering brunch and dinner menus. Try the Colorado green chile breakfast burrito with a ginger liqueur spritz in the a.m., and take your turn at the pasta bolognese and ‘Tell Me I’m Pretty’ spirited libation in the p.m. Step outside the restaurant, and you’ll find the only hotel property in the country that offers a Vespa to zip around town. Halcyon feels a bit like your living room with a warm and inviting vibe. Soak up the social atmosphere both upon entry and at the Elevated Rooftop Bar, and bring your

swimsuit for the pool deck complete with recreational curling, cabanas and breathtaking views of the city. Map out your foodie excursions by dabbling in an al fresco rooftop cocktail with a mountain view, decadent-filled chocolates cafe-side, and feasting on lobster rolls, tacos & tequila, crepes and so much more in this Denver district. All of it is waiting for you to create your own local foodie tour to satisfy your epicurean side. Additionally, the Cherry Creek corridor boasts dozens of refined spas, salons, art galleries and boutique hotels in addition to Halcyon, such as Hotel Clio and The Jacquard Hotel & Rooftop. This Denver neighborhood favorite offers an entirely unique experience, providing intentionally elevated and customized services and local experiences. Beyond the charm of Cherry Creek, Denver’s culture of arts and live music are thriving and growing by leaps and bounds. Take Meow Wolf, for example. Meow Wolf’s third permanent exhibition, Convergence Station, opened in Denver in September 2021 and is a not-to-be-missed experience. This four-story exhibition encompasses more than 75 unique installations, rooms and portals from 300 creatives. It tells a tale of what happens when a Denver city bus crashes into a rift during a rare cosmic event and opens a portal to four converged alien worlds. It has become one of the most talked about and nationally publicized attractions in Denver. Likewise, the Denver Art Museum hosts its global art collections representing cultures from around the world, with more than 70,000 works of art in 12 permanent collections along with several outdoor artworks not to be overlooked. The eight-story architectural marvel stuns with its dramatic façade, in part thanks to last year’s $175 million renovation project that expanded and reimagined the campus with new, dynamic spaces to explore. Denver’s open-air Red Rocks Amphitheatre featured the “most attended music venue in the world in 2021” thanks to its fantastic and rare aesthetic, history, and milestone moments that propelled it into its status it holds today. Freely hike and roam this geological wonder on non-event days, but don’t miss an opportunity to watch a performance under the Colorado stars and see where The Beatles played in 1964 and U2 filmed Under a Blood Red Sky in 1983, an event that boosted the venue into the global spotlight. Finally, don’t miss the downtown district favorites RiNo and LoDo. Denver’s urban-vibed River North Art District is a former industrial mercantile area turned into an artist magnet— blending urban charm and industrial revival with a collection of maker and artist galleries, breweries and bars, restaurants and coffee roasters, and street art murals surrounding you at nearly every corner. Be sure to check out Bigsby’s Folly for its roaring ‘20s-inspired urban winery experience. Denver’s Lower Downtown micro district, coined the Dairy Block, is a historic pocket packed with culinary concepts and unexpected craftsman curations to explore. Peruse the featured events, stay overnight, and eat, drink and be merry. Visit Denver believes that travel and local exploration makes the world a smaller and more connected place. It brings people together and fosters interaction among diverse cultures. We couldn’t agree more!
