HAPPY TRAILS ARTICLE BY HANNAH ECHOLS GRIESER PHOTOGRAPHY BY HANNAH ECHOLS GRIESER, MATTHEW SMITH

With warmer weather on the horizon, we have to pay homage to Douglas County’s abundance of designated open spaces and parks. With so many places to play, it’s no wonder that Douglas County was rated the 2nd healthiest county in America! Pull on your hiking boots, fill up your water bottle and hook that pup on a leash—it’s time to explore!

1. bluffs regional park It’s hard to believe that such a gorgeous park is carved out right in the middle of the hustle and bustle of Lonetree, Colorado. With moderate to difficult hills, this is a great space to train for the Rockies’ more challenging hikes. Enjoy views of the mountains and the city alike.

2. castlewood canyon state park Castlewood Canyon is a must for your warm-weather bucket list. In addition to its unique canyon features, the park has 15 different trails to explore that meander around waterfalls, caves, meadows and ruins. This is the only spot on our list that has an entry fee, so be sure to stow away $10 per vehicle.

3. spruce mountain Spruce Mountain just might be Larkspur’s crowning jewel. With 8.5 miles of moderate to high elevation trails, this is a great place to waste a wandering Sunday afternoon. The trails take you straight to the rockrimmed flat tops where you can take a breather, gulp some water and soak up the views. CONTINUED >

4. dawson butte ranch Dawson Butte Ranch is a 5.1 mile loop in Castle Rock that boasts of wildlife, rich forests and blooming wildflowers in the summer. I like to plan my trip just in time to finish up as the sun begins to set (on average it takes 2.25 hours to walk). The alpenglow is a sight to behold as golden hour melts into dusk.

5. sandstone ranch trail Douglas County’s newest designated Open Space might be its most historic. The 2,038-acre property in Larkspur is rich with heritage, wildlife habitats, cultural artifacts and natural resources. The gorgeous 12 mile trail boasts of red rock formations and mountain views. You’ll want to tackle this trail as soon as possible!

5

6. fairgrounds regional park Our final exploration destination is a great location to take your furry friend! This park surrounds the Douglas County Fairgrounds and has an abundance of picnic tables, ball fields and green space. They have just over 2.5 miles of paved trails, and an off-leash dog park where your pup can roam and socialize.

Translating Music

IMMERSE YOURSELF INTO ANOTHER LANGUAGE AND LEARN THE SOUNDS OF CANDLELIGHT. Music serves as a language. After all, what more is language than different sounds with assigned meaning? When translating between languages, there is no direct translation: sentence structure alters, tones affect meaning, words don’t have direct counterparts. This is much in part to how culture influences language, building a way to communicate for a

similar group of people. Like language, translating a song from pop to classical cannot take a straightforward route. Available instruments change, certain sounds are no longer available—it can’t be an exact translation. Candlelight, a Fever Original, began exclusively as classical concerts, featuring music from composers such as Beethoven and Bach. Recently, they’ve transformed songs you love into a new language. “We wanted to make the [classical] genre more accessible,” says Ashleigh Southard, Associate Producer for Fever. Instead of the guitar and drums you’re used to, you’ll hear cello and violin at Candlelight’s tribute concerts, preforming

music from artists including, Queen, Coldplay, Taylor Swift, ABBA and Ed Sheeran. “Our goal is to connect people to unique experiences in their city,” Ashleigh states. “Every venue I’ve talked to has never heard of an event like this.” At Wings Over the Rockies, musicians, candles and audience members are towered over by retired aircraft. The museum inside an old hangar began hosting Candlelight events in 2020 to allow for proper social distancing. Ashleigh enjoys museum venues because they offer “something extra along with the performance.” Doors open over an hour before the show, allowing audience members to enjoy the exhibit before taking their seats.

Accompanying the newly turned, classical arrangements are over two thousand LED candles. Their flicker is meditative, allowing a racing mind to solely focus on the music. The musicians of the string quartet, Range Ensemble, ease you into this meditative state. Their dedication to the music overflows from the stage, each understanding how they best contribute to the composition. Depending on who you focus on, you are able to pick out the distinctive pieces that build a song: harmony, melody, rhythm. Translating a song from a recording studio to a string quartet commands creativity. With two violins, a viola and a cello, instruments are used in innovative ways to craft novel sounds. Performers scrape their bow across the strings on the wrong side of the bridge. Bows are harshly scratched against the strings. Metal ends of bows are tapped atop strings. An originally EDM song is mixed with fiddle components. This all builds as each song reaches the bridge. The tempo hastens and the musicians’ passion becomes palpable. One violinist’s bow glides across the strings with fluidity, the other attacks each note, his bow trembling with each strike. Grace and power are at odds, but the musicians themselves sway back and forth in harmony. Their bows sync: up and down, up and down. Within these moments, the music finds an equilibrium. Watching this dance unfold is what makes live music superior. You find yourself rooting for the violist when she gets a chance to play the melody. Your skin crawls at the stroke of a violin’s high note. You feel the deep murmur of the cello in your chest. Your throat clenches as bows slam onto stings over and over and over again. You catch knowing glances between musicians. Whether you liked classical music before the performance is irrelevant because you do now, now that you understand this new language that’s been played before you in the candlelight.

Running with the Animals and Beyond THE TRIUMPHS AND TRIALS OF RUNNING A MARATHON ON EVERY CONTINENT

ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY STEVE SORENSEN

“Life is either a daring adventure or nothing at all.” Helen Keller Traveling to far flung destinations and bucket lists often go hand in hand. My wife, Carol, and I upped the ante when we discovered how we could combine our passions as avid travelers and runners. I had run many half-marathons, but when I was approaching my 60th milestone birthday, I decided if I was ever going to take on the challenge of running a marathon, that was the year. I went on to run two full marathons and 11 half marathons in 2013. During the second marathon in Paris, I was standing in my corral on the Champs Elysees under the shadow of the Arc de Triomphe when another American I was chatting with told me about this “run a marathon on every continent thing.” That’s when the seed was planted and Carol and I began the quest. She was with me every step of the way as we conquered the continents: North and South America in 2013, Europe and Oceana in 2014 and Antarctica, Africa and Asia in 2016.

“Life is Either a Daring Adventure or Nothing at All.” — Helen Keller

Each race has its own unique story. Sometimes, getting to the race can prove to be just as challenging as the race itself. In Antarctica, a Zodiac transported us across the water to the start of the race and our welcoming committee was a sole penguin. A marathon is physically taxing, but it’s the mind that finishes the race. Carol and I overcame physical hurdles while experiencing the people and places on an intimate level that has forever changed us. We were immersed in the running community and saw sites that tourists never see. The feeling of ohana, family, in Maui was real. We picked up our bibs at the race director’s home and were handed popsicles by local high school kids along the route. The challenge here was keeping our eyes on the road as the ocean view expanded before us and hundreds of whale spouts sprayed above the sparkling water. In Rio de Janeiro, a tear in my foot landed me in the emergency room the day before the race and then a harrowing cab ride included getting lost on the way to the starting line. We booked the Sydney Marathon while we were on the bus heading to the airport. After running the Big

Five Marathon in South Africa, we traveled to Victoria Falls and ran a half marathon the next weekend. Africa defies description. You can check off your lists—you’ll need vaccines, to pack accordingly, charge up your camera and store extra memory cards and batteries. That’s where the ordinary ends and the extraordinary begins. The Big Five Marathon takes place on the Entabeni Game Reserve with magnificent animals all about including zebras, giraffes, lions, cheetahs, wildebeests and elephants. The race itself is formidable. The trails are rutted in deep sand and the terrain is extremely hilly, including one very special hill that is a mile up and a mile down at over a 30º angle. I imagine you’re wondering how one runs a race with cheetahs and lions roaming about. Armed rangers “sit on them” and are stationed every few miles while they monitor the animals’ locations. Of course, they can only “sit” on so many animals at once: a wildebeest stampeded right in front of us! But the greatest joy was driving through the park to witness the animals up close.

It’s a sensory overload that lovingly pounds you out of your normal life–a magical cacophony of sounds, colors and scents. It’s the alchemist turning ordinary substances into the gold of your memory. Africa will change you–you may sense it happening, but you can’t explain it. It’s not until you look back on your experience to realize you’ve walked through a gate into a soul-expanding dimension. Then it becomes clear: Africa is like the first time you fell in love, like the memory of your first Christmas, like receiving a gift you didn’t expect. It becomes a song you love to sing. From the majestic animals, large and small, to a sheet of stars lying low overhead, from plains and mountains etched deep in red soil to a thick, nearly impenetrable jungle, the natural beauty is like none other. It becomes a wonderful memory set deep like a gemstone in the center of your being. Running a marathon on each continent may be more daunting than most bucket lists, but pursuing it was worth every daring adventure. Visit Music City

Getaway to Nashville

and ‘Write Your Own Music City Story’

Write your own music story. That’s exactly what the chefs, artists, historians, musicians and impassioned locals of Nashville want visitors to do as they dive into this culturally diverse and oh-so-friendly city. Our team of local lifestyle fanatics at City Lifestyle are thrilled to collaborate with Visit Music City to present a customized visitor’s guide and exclusive GIVEAWAY* to this city rich in experiences that only Nashville can give. It’s a destination drenched in distinction with elevated tastes, down-home charm and a range of discoveries both well-known and emerging—Nashville is ready to rock your world. With recent headlines such as “Top destinations for food and city lovers” (Tripadvisor), “Most anticipated hotel openings of 2022” (Forbes), and “Top global venues for live music” (Tennessean), Nashville has so much more than you’ve ever imagined, and we’re here to round up our recommendations for you. Whether you’re a Nashville enthusiast or a novice soon to cross this off your domestic bucket list, you will love the medley of past meets present and Southern roots paired with modern amenities. As the largest city in Tennessee, Nashville boasts an impressive array of destinations, including luxurious hotels such as the Sheraton Grand in the heart of downtown, Urban Cowboy, Noelle and The Hermitage Hotel, which houses the upscale restaurant Drusie and Darr, led by world-renowned chef Jean-Georges. Come and enjoy a truly elevated dining experience that reflects the new era of Nashville. When ready to absorb the historic side of the city, the centuries-old landmark and winery, Belle Meade Historic Site & Winery, offers guests “historic tours, family tours, wine and food pairings, bourbon tastings and chef-inspired food and wine pairings” that are unparalleled in their local experience. Likewise, Nelson’s Green Brier Distillery carries an incredible story of origination and bottles a remarkable 1860 family recipe that made Tennessee Whiskey world famous.

Let’s talk about one of the most anticipated draws— the food scene! Three things Nashville is known for are hot chicken, barbecue, and meat & three restaurants. Meat & three is a traditional Southern, cafeteria-style eatery with three meats changing daily, such as roast beef, meatloaf, fried chicken or catfish, plus your choice of three vegetable sides. Nashville has amassed a lot of attention over the last 10 years for its exquisite food scene, with several James Beard award-winning chefs and an incredible independent restaurant scene. People know how good the food scene is, but if they really want to find those independent chef-driven restaurants like Rolf and Daughters, FOLK, Bastion, Locust, or Henrietta Red, these are the chefs that garner a lot of attention that you won’t want to miss. Along with these notable culinary establishments, don’t overlook mainstays such as Arnold’s Country Kitchen, a traditional meat & three that has been in the same family for decades and where chefs love to eat because everything is sourced locally and delicious. Whether it’s traditional Southern food or higher end chef-driven cuisine, the quality is expected and delivered. You can also find dozens of amazing rooftop bars and cocktail lounges, as well as many hidden bars you can dig around for, such as the one in the Noelle hotel. For the art lovers at heart, Nashville’s ever-growing arts scene is as diverse and approachable as its music scene. Murals, street art, public art, art galleries and museums are all a part of experiencing Nashville’s visual art offerings. Music history venues such as the new National Museum of African American Music will complement your old favorite Frist Art Museum, Cheekwood Estate & Gardens, and Grand Ole Opry experiences. According to @visitmusiccity, “Everyone should do the Grand Ole Opry one night; it’s not just about the music, it’s a piece of history and the world’s longest running radio show.”

“Nashville’s ever-growing arts scene is as diverse and approachable as its music scene. Murals, street art, public art, art galleries, and museums are all a part of experiencing Nashville’s visual art offerings.”

As for the lay of the land, Nashville is definitely a city of neighborhoods. Each neighborhood is known for its own distinct feel and personality. East Nashville is funky, artsy, trendy and quirky. Germantown is a little more upscale with its chefdriven restaurants and walkable nature, known as Nashville’s first neighborhood founded by German settlers. 12South has eateries, boutique shopping and a lot of local favorites. Wedgewood-Houston is in transition mode right now with great breweries, distilleries, bakeries and art galleries. In the end, they all have their own scene. Plus, you can shop your heart out at a wealth of boutiques, galleries and local maker shops, as well as Nashville’s upscale The Mall at Green Hills brimming with luxury stores such as Golden Goose and Gucci. Last but not least is the music scene. Whether you’re into blues, jazz, honky tonk, rock, symphony or quite literally any genre of music imaginable, Nashville has it all. Spend one night on Broadway hopping bar to bar, sit orchestra-side at the Schermerhorn Symphony Center, tour and take in a show at the 130-year-old Ryman Auditorium, then experience a songwriter’s night at The Bluebird or The Listening Room Cafe. The music is different every night everywhere, so one is best served by referring to visitmusiccity.com for their Upcoming Concerts Calendar to soak up all the magnificent sounds. There’s often a general misconception that if you don’t like country music that you won’t enjoy this musically rooted city. This could not be farther from the truth, according to the team of lifestyle experts at Visit Music City. “There’s a lot more than just country music happening here. Country music laid the foundation that put all of these song writers, studios, musicians and infrastructure into place for all of this music to happen. But whether you like country music or not, what you don’t realize is that there’s a lot of music you might like that you never thought of as country.” This is a revelation that will pleasantly surprise many. And, what better way to bestow a no-questions-asked travel itinerary than with the locals’ knowledge? “Once people experience the genuine hospitality of Nashville to the level they do, many are surprised by how incredibly friendly people are.” Visit Music City Visit Music City offers a complimentary service called Trip Planner where you can contact their “Nashville Experts” who work on the visitor experience team, and they will help as much or as little as you want, including an entire agenda or a few suggestions (See “Plan a Trip” on the site).
