February 2022 PUBLISHER S
Jeni Fleck | jeni.fleck@citylifestyle.com Joan Dameron | joan.dameron@citylifestyle.com EDITOR IAL COOR DINATOR
Art comes in many different forms, giving us a glimpse of someone’s heart—a part of them we don’t see on the surface. We are all drawn to various expressions of art in different ways and we tend to appreciate artistic expression that makes us feel something and that resonates with us. We have always admired the vast creativity that artisans of all kinds pour into their craftsmanship. Our February issue is dedicated to sharing about artists, designers and business owners in our area. As you read about a few local artisans in our community and their stories of passion and self-expression, we hope you are inspired to pursue what you love. After all, February is the month of love. With the hectic schedules we often keep, it is easy to let our hobbies, talents and special interests fall by the wayside. We just have to be deliberate about allowing ourselves time to pour into interests that we love and that fill us up. Take your Valentine to downtown Parker establishments to celebrate and enjoy a bit of nostalgia too. Even the artwork conjures up romantic images of our hometown, whether you have lived here a few months or all your life. It has been said that if you love what you do, it doesn't feel like work at all. Read how Anna Mannerfelt Fingers has combined her talent for marketing and her love for horses into a business that caters to the equine industry. You can always find her galloping on her horse, Dekan, and for her clients too. Jay Moore finds continued joy working with collectors on collaborative paintings that bring a love of place into their homes. So, while you fill your home with chocolates, flowers, valentines and perhaps college basketball this month, remember to give yourself some time to do what you love. Find what makes you feel alive and don’t forget to share it with us. And while you are at it, don’t forget to shop local and support our local makers and artists right here in our community. xoxo

TACK-LING YOUR BRAND WIRED MUSTANG’S CEO, ANNA MANNERFELT FINGERS, TALKS ABOUT WHY SHE STARTED A NICHE MARKETING FIRM DEDICATED TO EQUINE BUSINESSES.
ARTICLE BY MADELEINE KRIECH | PHOTOGRAPHY BY GEORGE ROSALES
Branding. It’s the way a company markets itself and burning an identifying mark on livestock. Both leave an impression; one just happens to be metaphorical and hurt a lot less. That’s why Anna Mannerfelt Fingers doesn’t say she’s branding her clients—she’s brand building. What might be semantics to some, is an important differentiation to others—especially for horse lover and CEO and Managing Partner of Wired Mustang, a digital marketing firm for equine related businesses.

“Horse people are a special kind of people,” explains Anna. That’s why her marketing firm predominately deals with equine oriented businesses. Back when she started her firm, Wired Mustang was doing everything for everyone. As time went on, the team realized their knowledge of horses and marketing would better suit a specific niche, rather than spreading themselves too far across the pasture. The Wired Mustang team became experts in this equine-marketing niche and hasn’t looked back since. Since Anna and her husband, Dave Fingers, started Wired Mustang in 2017, she estimates they’ve kept 96% of their original clients. Rather than trap their clients in a yearly contract, Wired Mustang clients sign on a monthly basis. Anna wants her clients to see growing success and give them the freedom to choose if they come back. With a retention rate of 96%, it’s safe to say not many are straying off. Wired Mustang not only helps companies across the country, but their employees also live nation-wide. Anna only wanted the best to work for her firm, no matter where they roam. She says it was hard, but worth it. “We will always be a smaller team, but you get to do a lot,” Anna says. “You don’t want to lose the magic.” This “magic” is Wired Mustang’s interaction with their clients. The teams’ aim isn’t to rack up a seven-figure profit—it’s to grow with their clients and to cater to their changing needs. To stay on top of forever-evolving digital marketing strategies, Anna and her team meet with a business coach to deal with change proactively. Anna relates it to her riding coach: she knows how to ride and rides every day, but she takes lessons from a trainer to improve. “Someone called me a control freak and I take that as a compliment,” Anna jokes. With equine businesses contributing $44 billion to the United States’ GDP, they need someone to help with their marketing. Wired Mustang uses a hands-on approach to ensure their current and future clients’ success. You could say, they give a Shetland pony. Anna wants Wired Mustang clients to trust her team 100%. She understands that when you hire a marketing firm, you expect a return on your investment. She and her team go the extra mile to keep not only Wired Mustang’s doors open, but all of their clients’ doors open too. “It’s easy because we know horse people,” Anna exclaims. For more information about Wired Mustang visit their website at wiredmustang.com or reach them at info@wiredmustang. com or (303) 974-5281.

HIRING A MARKETING FIRM ASK TOUGH QUESTIONS
Treat hiring a marketing firm like hiring a member of your own team—you want to make sure they fit your needs.
KNOW WHAT YOU WANT
Be clear about your expectations. Not all firms are the same. Take the time to find one that fits your communication style.
CATER TO YOUR AUDIENCE
Has this firm worked with your audience before? If you’re marketing to a specific group of people, find a firm that speaks their language.
SET A TIMELINE
Different firms will ask your company to sign a contract for a certain amount of time. Determine what length of contract you’re comfortable with before signing.
MAKE AN INVESTMENT
For a higher quality product, you’ll have to invest more money into the firm you hire. Set a budget that aligns with your goals.

The First of Many
In 2018 we talked to Jay Moore to learn about the passion that drives the painter. He has been in his studio just south of Mainstreet for nine years, with the last three years being the most successful. His excitement and devotion to his craft are as strong as ever, yet his business model has changed. “The tides shifted,” Jay says. His studio, which was originally set up as a gallery, has had some updates – new lighting, new paint and beams that set the working studio in the back where Jay’s creations come to life apart from the gallery and collaboration space. Before the pandemic, Jay had gallery shows so people could see his work. With gallery shows no longer an option, Jay switched his attention to commissioned pieces and business took off. “The business morphed and it was a seamless progression,” he says. Jay has always loved to see people’s reactions to his work. A painting might remind people of a place they lived or a family vacation. Collaborating on a project takes it to another level. “I have a distinct purpose and it’s not just a painting anymore,” Jay explains. “I know the potential of making someone happy and I put a little more into it. I want to blow the person over.”
24
M UST SE E | A RTS + CU LTURE
The “secret sauce” of how this all works is the connections that are formed. In a gallery setting, a buyer doesn’t usually have a chance to meet the artist, but instead chooses a piece off the wall. With commission pieces, collectors get to meet and form a relationship with the artist. Jay has an idea wall in the inner sanctum of his studio where small paintings are displayed. The small version is part of the collaboration process and allows both Jay and the customer to make sure their vision for the completed painting is the same. “The whole process is fun for me and I hope it is fun for them as well,” Jay smiles. As they talk about colors, size and the personal meaning of the place, Jay and his clients form a bond. Buying art isn’t something that is done on a whim and having a relationship and more flexibility, such as the size of the painting to fit a space, are key components. For example, what started out as one smaller painting of a location near where a client grew up in

Waking Up White
East Glacier National Park, turned into a several months-long project for four large paintings of lakes and mountains in the region. People will say, “ ‘Holy cow, what are we doing!’ because it is a big investment. When they are so excited to make theleap - whether it is a commitment to one or more commissioned pieces - it is hugely impactful. The painting is part of the heritage of the family,” Jay explains. He finds special joy in the Big Reveal, when Jay lights the piece, every brushstroke standing out and the client sees it for the first time. When a person sees the ripple on the water, the sun on the aspens, the glow of an animal’s fur or the color of a rock, there is a personal connection. When the collector says, “this is our mountain, our place, our lake,” and he sees a tear, Jay knows he has done his job. His wide smile as he talks about his work truly speaks volumes. He wants his paintings to be cherished for generations to come and to be part of the family’s legacy.
Jay describes it like this: “A photo is like a newspaper article - what you see is what you get. A painting is like a poem - it leaves room for your imagination to fill in the blanks.”

David Rossa | Duane Topping and models (L to R) Taiya Werling, Mia Felicia, Caitlin Badinger and Janelle Tejan
New to the Game Duane Topping Promotes Self-Knowledge and Love Through Fashion Design ARTICLE BY HANNAH ECHOLS GRIESER Perhaps you wouldn’t expect a war veteran with a fondness for motorcycles to be a fashion designer. Perhaps you wouldn’t expect fashion design to help heal PostTraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), either. If so, it’s only because you haven’t met Duane Topping yet. In 2012, Duane retired from the army. The next four and a half years were dark and dour as Duane fought through his PTSD. “PTSD was one of those demons I couldn’t shake. For several years I was the first guy in the bar in the morning and the last guy to leave at night,” he says.
Doctors gave Duane treatment plans for his PTSD, but their one-size-fits-all approach wasn’t working. So, Duane decided to use his G.I. Bill to go back to school. He registered as an English major, but he had to have a minor. One of the only courses available was Feminism 101. The course had a profound impact on him. This is largely because it introduced him to the notion of social constructs. In summary, social constructs are ideas created by culture. They don’t have inherent truth or meaning, but they are widely accepted. A simple example is the idea that pink is a girl’s color and CONTINUED >

blue is a boy’s color. As Duane dove deeper into the course, he realized that he had been placing limitations on himself based on the societal role, or social construct, he thought he had to fill. “That course really opened my mind to what I could be,” Duane says. He pressed into his creative side. Duane always had a love for the visual arts, fashion specifically. When he was deployed in Iraq, he even preferred the women’s care packages to men’s because they included magazines with better fashion sections. He taught himself to sew—his first attempt being a purse. As he proudly displayed it to his wife, he discovered that he accidentally sewed it inside out when the contents dumped onto the floor. Luckily, Duane was a fast learner. Not even five years later, Duane’s accomplishments are off the charts. He’s been published in multiple issues of Vogue, spoken on NPR, issued a TedX Talk and has been Facebook’s Veteran of the Year for two years in a row. Still, his proudest accomplishment was being able to ride his motorcycle down the runway at 2021 Latin Fashion Week in Denver. Duane often surprises people. He has repeatedly been mistaken for the doorman or janitor at his fashion shows. It used to frustrate him, but he now finds those instances humorous—they motivate him to overturn people’s preconceived notions and usurp their biases. So much so that he’s chosen the catch phrase ‘more than a label.’ “More than a label is about being aware of labels that are given to you and understanding that you’ve been choosing those labels without thinking. With a little self-love you can choose your own path,” Duane explains.
“More than a label is about being aware of labels that are given to you and understanding that you’ve been choosing those labels without thinking. With a little self-love you can choose your own path”
These days, Duane focuses on making his brand more personal. He looks forward to custom work and plans to venture toward a ‘blank palette’ style. The goal is to accentuate an individual’s features and personality rather than to mask them behind complex designs. “I make the wrapping, but they are the gift,” Duane explains. If you want to view Duane’s portfolio, visit duanetopping.com. If you’re interested in having a custom piece created email info@duanetopping.com. (Duane is intentional working with your budget. Prices for custom work are comparable to department stores like Dillard’s or Macy’s.) CONTINUED >

Fashion Love
Valentine’s Day Weekend Event Features Chicago-Based Fashion Designer Borris Powell’s ‘To bE iN LoVe” In June 2021, Parker restaurateur Pamela Briere launched the first Parker Fashion Week, meant to promote local arts, style and fashion in Douglas County. The high-profile event, which generated lots of buzz far beyond south Denver, featured award-winning fashion designers from across the country and attracted 500 people to Parker’s new West Main development on West Mainstreet. Pamela’s restaurant West Main Taproom & Grill was transformed into a mesmerizing production and red-carpet experience. One of those featured designers was a show favorite, Borris Powell. The Parker Fashion Week team is bringing back Borris for a special Valentine’s weekend fashion show and dinner revolving around his fashion-theater experience called “To bE iN LoVe,” which debuted in Chicago last year and highlights Borris’ 10 year anniversary collection and his personal journey as a fashion designer. Come celebrate love with your significant other, close friends, family members and anyone else who is special in your life with this fun, fashion-forward event to promote our Douglas County businesses.
